  • Postponed 2019 El Clásico to hold on December 18

    Agency Reporter

The postponed El  Clasico between Barcelona and Real Madrid will now be played on December 18 despite opposition from La Liga, the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) confirmed on Wednesday.

Spain’s most prestigious fixture, which was due to take place at Camp Nou on Saturday, was postponed last week because of violent pro-independence protests in Catalonia.

La Liga had proposed December 4 or 7 and have said they are considering an appeal.

“The league does not agree with the decision,” La Liga said in a statement.

“It is studying the documentation to decide whether to appeal, against whom and before what bodies.”

An earlier statement from the RFEF read: “The decision of the Competition Committee has taken place after analysing in recent days the proposals of both clubs, who were invited to agree a date and decided on December 18.

“It has also analysed a report from the RFEF Competitions Area as well as numerous reports submitted by La Liga, which are not binding.

“At today’s meeting, the Committee also analysed the latest reports from both clubs, who maintain their initial proposal to play the match on 18 December.”

It means Barcelona, who wanted the match to go ahead as originally planned this weekend, will face a testing few weeks before Christmas.

In December, they are already scheduled to play away at Atletico Madrid, Inter Milan in the Champions League and Real Sociedad, who sit fourth in La Liga.

Real Madrid will play away at Club Brugge in the Champions League and then Valencia, just before travelling to Barca.

But both clubs swiftly settled on Wednesday, December 18 last week, hours after being instructed to agree a new date by the RFEF.

  • This Weekend El Clasico Live on World Of Champions

Multichoice said this weekend rivalry El Clasico match between Real Madrid and Barcelona, in Round 26 of the 2018/19 La Liga season will air live on DStv and Gotv.

The satellite television service provider made this known in a media statement made available on Thursday in Lagos.

The 240th competitive match between Real and Barca is set to be a key factor in the La Liga title race this season: a win for Los Blancos will bring them back into the battle for Spain’s top honour, while the Blaugrana will feel that a victory at the Santiago Bernabeu will remove one of their last major hurdles on the path to glory.

Both teams enjoyed victories in the previous round of La Liga: Real claimed a controversial 2-1 away win away to Leganes (thanks to two penalties), while Lionel Messi was in ominous form for Barca as they won 4-2 away to Sevilla. The Argentine master netted a hat-trick at the Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan to move further clear at the top of the Spanish top-flight scoring charts.

Second-placed Atletico Madrid will be hoping their derby rivals can beat Barca at home on Saturday night, which would then give them the chance to close the gap at the top to just four points with a win away to Real Sociedad at Estadio Municipal de Anoeta on Sunday.

Atletico continued their good form with a 2-0 home win over Villarreal this past weekend (featuring goals from Alvaro Morata, his first since joining on loan from Chelsea, and Saul) and Diego Simeone will be highly motivated should the chance to put pressure on leaders Barcelona arise.

Elsewhere in Spain, DStv and GOtv viewers can also look forward to Valencia hosting Athletic Bilbao at Estadio Mestalla on Sunday night. Both teams are in good form (Los Che are unbeaten in nine matches across all competitions ahead of a Copa del Rey match on Thursday, while Bilbao racked up a second successive win when they beat Eibar 1-0 this past weekend) and chasing a place in next season’s UEFA Europa League.

Other games for DStv and GOtv viewers to watch out for include the round’s opening game on Friday night, which is a relegation six points between Rayo Vallecano and Girona at the Estadio de Vallecas; Villarreal will be desperate for a victory when they host high-flying Deportivo Alaves; and Real Betis could bring themselves into Champions League contention with a win at home to fourth-placed Getafe on Sunday.

  • Why Laliga Derbies are Bigger than El-Clasico – Laliga MD

Laliga derbies are action packed matches that give football fans great excitements that worth every bit of time and star studded like El-Clasico.

Though the most watched LaLiga match among football fans in Nigeria is undoubtedly Barcelona vs Real Madrid fixtures, obviously because of the  quality of play of the teams and the parade of star players.

According to the Managing Director LaLiga Nigeria, Javier Del Rio from the creation of the Spanish Men’s league in 1902, the biggest football matches which have continued to attract awe and global momentum in the professional league are centered on the five derbies in the league.

Speaking with sports writers in Lagos, Javier Del Rio explained that football fans far and wide follow the Laliga derbies religious and with delight emotions because of its glamour, excitements, passion, culture, and history.

“We found that many Nigeria football fans only know about the El Clasico as a big game in LaLiga, and El Clasico is not even a Derby,”. Javier Del Rio told the Nigerian sports writers at La Liga Derbies close-up meet recently held in Lagos.”

LaLiga derbies are more than just football; they are about tradition, history, and culture. They are some of the most exciting matches in the world. LaLiga derbies are also some the most fiercely contested rivalries in World football,” he explained.

The aim of the forum said Javier Del Rio was to raise awareness for each of the Derbies being played in LaLiga during the 2nd half of the season; namely the Madrid Derbi between Real Madrid CF and Atletico de Madrid; the El Gran Derbi between Sevilla FC and Real Betis; the Valencian Derbi between Valencia CF and Levante UD; the Basque Derbi between Real Sociedad and Athletic Bilbao; and the Catalan Derbibetween FC Barcelona and RCD Espanyol.

“As LaLiga continues to build its brand’s presence Nigerians are becoming more and more familiar with the league, its various big games, and most of all its Derbies, which are highly passionate.

“We do this along with supporting the growth of grassroots football in Nigeria, LaLiga is committed to inspiring new fans of the beautiful game, introducing them to the Spanish league and the best in world football while expanding their worldviews,” Javier Del Rio said.

Brief History on LaLiga Derbies Below

THE MADRID DERBY: REAL MADRID VS ATLETICO DE MADRID

The Madrid derby between the city’s two biggest teams – Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid – is a more than century-long story of friends, neighbours, and most of all, rivals.

Although the city of Madrid currently boasts five LaLiga teams, as Getafe, Leganes and Rayo Vallecano all have gained promotion in recent seasons, Real versus Atleti is the big one for many natives of the city, known as madrileños. The derby is now the most played game in Spanish football history, and among world football’s most celebrated fixtures.

After Real Madrid were officially established in 1902, and then Atletico the following year, the two sides faced off in various friendlies and unofficial meetings before the first recorded official meeting in the Campeonato Regional Centro, a 1-1 draw on 2 December 1906.

“El GRAN DERBI”: SEVILLA FC VS REAL BETIS

Sevilla, the Andalusian capital, is home to one of Spanish football’s most colourful derby meetings, between the city’s two LaLiga sides, Sevilla FC and Real Betis. It’s such a big game that it’s become known as ‘El Gran Derbi’… “The Big Derby.”

Both among LaLiga’s most historic clubs, and both previous Primera Division title winners, the Seville derby rivalry is one which has divided allegiances and even families within the city for over a century.

A strong British influence existed when organised football was first played in Seville back in the last decade of the 19th century. The first club in Seville was created in 1890, while today’s Sevilla FC were founded in October 1904. Real Betis Balompie came into being just three years later.

After many official and unofficial early meetings in competitions as diverse as the Copa de Sevilla, Copa del Duque de Santo Mauro, Andalusian championship and Southern Regional Championship, the two clubs were founder members of LaLiga’s second tier, with Betis winning both 1928/29 meetings, 3-0 away and 2-1 at home.

THE VALENCIA DERBY: VALENCIA CF VS LEVANTE UD

The Valencia city derby between Valencia CF and Levante UD has grown in recent years into one of Spanish football’s keenest local rivalries.

Also known as the ‘derbi del Turia’ for the river which runs through the centre of Spain’s third-biggest city, the fixture has really picked up steam in recent decades as Levante have established themselves in LaLiga Santander, with all the clashes and controversies that brings.

Los Granotas’ [the frogs] actually pre-date their local rivals by a decade, with Levante Futbol Club playing its first game in 1909, while based in the seaside El Cabanyal district of the city. Valencia Club de Futbol then arrived in 1919, closer to the centre at Mestalla, with the first ‘official’ derby being played the following year in the Valencian Regional Championship.

When LaLiga began in 1928/29, Valencia began in the second tier, earning promotion to the top flight within just three seasons.

THE BASQUE DERBY: ATHLETIC CLUB VS REAL SOCIEDAD

LaLiga’s Basque Derby is a unique fixture in world football, with the rivalry between Bilbao’s Athletic Club and San Sebastian-based Real Sociedad going way past just football.

The historic enmity between the Basque country’s two biggest cities, industrial Bilbao and aristocratic San Sebastian, found a sporting outlet when football arrived in the early 20th century.

Athletic Club, using the English spelling, was founded in 1898 by Bilbao-born engineering students who had studied in the United Kingdom. San Sebastian’s Real Sociedad de Futbol [Royal Society of Football] was soon established 100 kilometres along the coast in 1909, with the official seal of Spain’s King Alfonso XIII.

Exhibition and friendly games between the clubs immediately began, with the beginning of the Basque Regional League in 1913 bringing official status.

THE CATALAN DERBY: FC BARCELONA VS RCD ESPANYOL

The rivalry between the two clubs dates right back to the beginnings of organised football in the city, three decades before the establishment of LaLiga. There have also been Catalan derbies (also known locally as the ‘derbi barcelonés’) through the years in the Copa Del Rey, Spanish Supercopa, Copa Catalonia and the now defunct Fairs Cup. While 25-time LaLiga winners Barcelona have often come out on top, Espanyol are always eager to upset their historically more successful neighbours.

The two clubs had similar but ultimately different origins at the turn of the 20th century. Barcelona were established by Swiss student Hans Gamper in November 1899, with many of the founder members coming from the city’s cosmopolitan ex-pat community. Espanyol were set up the following October, with locally-bon engineering student Angel Rodriguez Ruiz as president and the team drawn mostly from migrant workers from other Spanish regions such as Andalucía, Extremadura, Galicia and even Madrid.

  • GOtv to air 176th El Clasico on Sunday

GOtv subscribers will have an opportunity on Sunday, to watch the world’s biggest club football rivalry when La Liga champions, Barcelona, host their rivals and UEFA Champions League finalists, Real Madrid, in the famed El Clasico at the Camp Nou.

The game, which is the 176th meeting between both teams, will be broadcast live on SuperSport Select 4 (channel 34) at 7.30pm to GOtv MAX subscribers.

The game will also see two of football’s biggest talents, Lionel Messi and  Cristiano Ronaldo, going head to head.  Barcelona legend and captain, Andres Iniesta, will also be aiming to bow out on a high in what would be his last El Clasico game, after announcing that he will quit the club at the end of the season.

Despite Barcelona already crowned champions following their 4-2 victory over Deportivo La Coruna in their last match, the clash with Real Madrid is sure to be a blockbuster given the decades of rivalry and the declaration by Madrid captain, Sergio Ramos, which Barca would not be given a guard of honour.

Following a 0-3 loss at the Santiago Bernabeu in the last El Clasico, Real Madrid would be gunning for revenge, having also recently qualified for the UEFA Champions League final by seeing off the threat from German giants, Bayern Munich.

Barcelona, on the other hand, will be seeking more relief for their quarter-final exit in the UEFA Champions League by beating their rivals to complete an El Clasico double.

Speaking on the game’s coverage, Martin Mabutho, General Manager, Sales and Marketing, MultiChoice Nigeria, said: “MultiChoice Nigeria is thrilled to bring football’s greatest club rivalry to Nigerians. The rivalry between Barcelona and Real Madrid goes back decades, with both clubs boasting some of the most passionate fans around the world. Nigeria is no different, as the country has one of the biggest representations of both clubs. The game is widely regarded as one of the biggest in league football globally, and our GOtv viewers can tune in to GOtv Max this weekend to catch all of the action.”

  • El Clasico takes Centre stage in Miami

El Clasico takes Centre stage in Miami

They have played Super Bowls, World Series and NBA championships in Miami but on Saturday soccer, and one of the sport’s great rivalries, will be the hot ticket when Real Madrid and Barcelona meet in a rare El Clasico away from Spanish soil.

The match marks just the second time, and first in 35 years, that El Clasico will be played outside Spain. The contest is being given the full Super Bowl treatment with a lavish week-long buildup that includes VIP South Beach parties, celebrity soccer games and even Combate Clasico, an MMA event.

With a sellout crowd of over 65 000 expected at Hard Rock Stadium, home of the National Football League’s Miami Dolphins, resale site StubHub says the match is the most popular soccer ticket of the season, with prices reaching $5 500 a seat.

Anytime Real Madrid and Barcelona appear on the pitch together it is a guaranteed ratings hit, routinely pulling in a global audience that dwarfs the Super Bowl.

While the match is little more than a glorified friendly, the romance attached to the rivalry elevates it to a far more compelling sporting spectacle, with Matt Higgins, the CEO of Relevent Sports the company that negotiated the game, positioning Saturday’s Clasico as a watershed moment for US soccer.

“To me it represents a pivotal turning point in the ascendancy of global soccer (in the US), the dream of having Real Madrid and Barcelona, arguably the best rivalry in sport,” Higgins told Reuters. “To me this represents the trust we have earned over the last couple of years.

“We’re not just looking at the match but the entire week as a showcase of just how far global soccer has come in the United States.”

Higgins’ hyperbole may be over the top, but it does provide a clear indication of the massive appetite for top flight soccer in the country, and particularly for line-ups that include the world’s best players in Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and Neymar.

Aside from being two of the world’s most glamorous clubs they are also two of the most valuable, sitting fourth (Barcelona) and fifth (Real Madrid) on Forbes most recent evaluations, with a combined worth of $7.22 billion.

While the CONCACAF Gold Cup, a competitive tournament featuring the national teams of Mexico and United States, unfolded almost unnoticed earlier this month, the International Champions Cup (ICC), a manufactured competition developed by Relevent Sport, has played to packed arenas. The Manchester Derby between United and City pulled in more than 67 000 in Houston last week, while Real Madrid and Manchester City entertained a record crowd of more than 93 000 at the Los Angeles Coliseum on Wednesday.

Clubs from across the world have frequently spent the off-season travelling across North America looking for additional income and growing their fan base.

ICC and Relevent Sports, founded by Higgins and Dolphins owner Stephen Ross, has provided the perfect marketing vehicle, operating tournaments simultaneously in the US and Asia. “The people from Relevent we have known for many years and they have organised this match and it has been the goals these last years to grow the biggest market in the world,” Barcelona’s vice president of marketing Manel Arroyo told Reuters.

“The US market is our main priority, the main market in the world really and FC Barcelona can do a lot to help grow the sport here.”

Barcelona and Real Madrid have been joined in this year’s ICC by Manchester City, Manchester United, Paris Saint Germain, Juventus, Tottenham Hotspur and AS Roma.

The crown jewel on the fixture list, however, is El Clasico, last staged on foreign soil in Venezuela in 1982.

“Both teams have been pitched for many years, they’ve also been understandably reluctant to entrust this match to anyone, anywhere,” said Higgins.

“Many dreams to host a Clasico have died a quick death because of a reluctance to put that match on and what it took was Steve Ross and some good old shuttle diplomacy.

“We gave them the commitment that this wouldn’t be treated just as a match but a showcase of La Liga and European football.”

  • El-Clasico: It’s a draw

The much-awaited la-Liga match between Real Madrid and  Barcelona has ended in a one all draw.

A last minute goal by Sergio Ramos ensured that Madrid team had a tie with the home team who had earlier scored through Luis Suárez in the game.

The match which was watched all over the world and has garnered some much international hype was played at the Camp Nou, in Barcelona.
