‘Enyimba’s loss to El Kanemi, temporary setback’

Enyimba’s Femi Thomas has described his team’s 0-2 loss to El Kanemi Warriors as a temporary setback which will be corrected when the People’s Elephant face Warri Wolves on Sunday.

El Kanemi Warriors halted the unbeaten run of the Aba Millionaires since the beginning of the second stanza with the defeat but Thomas, who was between the sticks in Maiduguri, said Enyimba would bounce back.

“We lost 0-2. It was a tough encounter. I’m not happy that we lost but we need to forget about this loss and forge ahead.

“We have a tough encounter against Warri Wolves away from home in Week 25. We shall bounce back from this setback when we play our next match,” Thomas assured.

Enyimba have 35 points from 23 games to place 7th on the log while El Kanemi’s latest win saw them storm to 3rd on the log with 37 points from as many games.

    • Maiduguri team sure of victory in Lafia

EL  Kanemi Warriors say they will show Glo Premier League leaders, Kano Pillars, the exit at the end of today’s Federation Cup Round of 32 encounter in Lafia, Nassarawa.

The Maiduguri side were the last club to get the better of Pillars this season in a 2-0 victory over the Pyramid side in a Week 20 tie on July 3rd. It was the return leg of the Week 19 league clash played in Kano which Pillars won by the same scoreline on June 16th.

With today’s tie an away one for both teams, El Kanemi chairman Zanna Mala says the club will do enough to dump Pillars out of the oldest club competition in Nigeria.

“We are not arrogant with our claims that we shall beat Pillars on Wednesday in Lafia.

“We know it won’t be easy but we have already defeated them and they also beat us, but in Lafia it is only one club that will qualify for the Round of 16. El Kanemi will show Pillars that they are equally matched.

“We have won this competition twice (in 1991 and 1992) and we are ready again to add to the two. We have the advantage and we shall explore it,” Mala assured.

Incidentally, it was Pillars that El Kanemi defeated 3-2 in the final of the 1991edition to cart away their first Challenge Cup (as the tournament was known them). They successfully defended the title the following year by beating Stationery Stores of Lagos 1-0.

For Kano Pillars, they won the competition in 1953 by beating Lagos Dynamos 2-1 in the final. The Baba Ganaru-tutored team got to the semi final last year before losing on penalties to Lobi Stars in Calabar.

El Kanemi chairman Zanna Mala is convinced his boys will eliminate league defending champions, Kano Pillars from the 2013 Federation Cup Round of 32 in a month’s time.

Pillars beat El Kanemi 2-0 in a Week 19 league tie played on June 16, while El Kanemi, coached by Zachary Baraje, returned the favour on July 3 at the El Kanemi International Stadium, Maiduguri during a Week 20 clash.

With both teams booked to meet again at the Lafia Stadium in Nasarawa, Zanna said his players had been looking forward to another thrilling contest in the hope that they would shock Pillars again, like they did two weeks ago.

“We are ready for Pillars. The players and the technical crew are ready.

“They have trained very hard for this game and I fancy our chances against Pillars in Lafia on Wednesday.

“We are not intimidated at all by the credentials of our opponents. We shall come out to play our game and assert our superiority just like we did during the league game.

“We are leaving for Lafia on Monday for the match and insha Allah, we shall conquer,” Zanna said.

El Kanemi got to the group stage of the 2012 Federation Cup before they were eliminated at the Lagos centre, while Pillars were defeated in the semi final by Lobi Stars on penalties last year under what Pillars called ‘very cloudy circumstances.’

El Kanemi’s coach not fazed by win over 3SC

The coach of El Kanemi football club, Zachary Baraje has said he is not overly surprised by the 2-0 victory his team posted over Shooting Stars of Ibadan in their Matchday Eight meeting on Wednesday.

The Oluyole Warriors were stung by two early goals, and failed to take anything away from the Maiduguri stadium despite dominating play for the major part of the game.

“I am not surprised by the victory, because we have been playing well even in the matches that we lost,” Baraje said immediately after the game.

“Defeating Shooting Stars is nothing special despite the fact that they gave us stiff opposition,” he further added.

The victory means that El Kanemi moved to the 12th position, while Shooting Stars remain 5th. Both teams had to wait for the outcome of Thursday matches, to know their true positions.

    Thompson’s return gives El-Kanemi hope

The return of Thompson Ezekiel to Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) club, El-Kanemi Warriors has lifted the spirit of the club gaffer, Zachary Baraje.

The Warriors struggled to score in their first 270 minutes of top flight football against Nasarawa United, Wikki Tourists and Enyimba this season.

Baraje’s men had to wait till about 329 minutes of league football before Haruna Babalo got their first goal of the season. The El-Kanemi head coach has now identified the big forward as the solution to his team’s goalscoring problems this term.

“After seven games I have recognised where our problem lies. It is early in the season to press the panic button just yet. We have a wonderful group of players but up front we have been deficient in terms of scoring goals.

“When the transfer window opens (by Week 9) we will bring in new players. Already some of them are with us. One is Thompson Ezekiel who I’ve watched in two training sessions now and I’m convinced he is what we want. I wasn’t with the team when he played in the (Nigeria) National League but I’m impressed with his performance,” said Baraje, who joined the Warriors from Dolphins this term.

Ezekiel agreed to join Enugu Rangers at the start of this season after his performance at the 2012 Federation Cup attracted interests from top clubs including Cameroon side, CotonSport.
