Zakzaky ran parallel govt for 40 years – Sheikh Gumi

Kaduna-based revered Islamic scholar, Sheikh (Dr.) Ahmad Abubakar Gumi has alleged Leader of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria, popularly known as Shi’ite, Sheikh Ibraheem El-Zakzaky has been running a parallel government in most parts of the north in the last 40 years.

Speaking to newsmen Tuesday, Dr Gumi said that ‘’the Shi’ites have been embarking on military training and producing cadets and soldiers.’’ The Islamic cleric further alleged that they were ‘’operating a state within a state.’’

According to Sheik Gumi, ‘’The Islamic Movement of Nigeria does not recognise the corporate entity of Nigeria. The group is not registered. They operate above the law and they get direct foreign aid,’’ he further alleged.

He stated further that, former President Umaru Yar’adua had told him of the massive importation of ammunitions and weapons to different parts of the country, adding that the president had mentioned Iran as supplying arms to the Shiites.

The Medical Doctor-turned Islamic scholar said that the recent clash between Shiites and soldiers was ‘’a divine intervention to prevent us from a catastrophe like that of Boko Haram. It came sudden and powerful to eradicate and uproot any plan that they must have been having to harm the society.’’

Gumi said that he had written Zakzaky about a year ago, warning him about the dangers of blocking roads during the annual Ar’baeen trek, where his follower travelled on foot from all over the country to Zaria.

He said that blocking road is an abomination in Islam.

The scholar warned that the north will continue to be under-developed if the twin evils of shia and Boko Haram are not eradicated, adding that  ‘’the strife and unnecessary blocking of roads and shouting slogans on the way increases the tension in the north.’’

    El-Zakzaky’s followers protest in Minna

Members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria in Niger State at the weekend protested the detention of their leader, Sheikh Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, by security agents.

The leader (Amirul) in Minna, the Niger State capital, Mallam Ibrahim Khalid Mohammed, addressing followers at the Central Mosque, called for the release of their leader, “who is known for peace and peaceful co-existence.”

He said the Islamic Movement of Nigeria, a non-government organisation, established 37 years ago, was a peaceful group.

He said El-Zakzaky should be released with bodies of members held by security agents.

Mohammed described demolition of homes of their leader and followers as unconstitutional, undemocratic and a violation of their rights.

He said they were not afraid of death because they had a right to live.

Mohammed stressed that they would protest until their leader and bodies of their colleagues were released for burial.

Zaria killings: El-Zakzaky to be prosecuted -El-Rufai

Kaduna State Governor, Nasir el-Rufai, rose from the Northern States Governors Forum (NSGF) meeting yesterday evening to say leader of Islamic Movement of Nigeria popularly known as Shi’ite Movement, Sheikh Ibrahim El-Zakzaky would be prosecuted over the recent clash between his members and men of Nigerian Army that left some persons dead in Zaria.

The Governor stated this while fielding questions from newsmen shortly after the Chairman of NSGF, Governor Kashim Shettima, read the communiqué issued after the emergency meeting aimed at proffering solutions to upheavals in the region especially, that of Zaria, Kaduna State .

El-Rufai said all the parties involved in the incident will be weighed by the constitution and anyone found culpable will be prosecuted accordingly. He added that a Judicial Commission of Inquiry set up by the state government would examine the remote and immediate causes of Zaria incident.

Earlier, Governor Shettima has said in the communiqué that all Nigerians should respect the law and constituted authority, just as he directed every organization, religious or social to operate within the confines of the law.

The communiqué read in part, “the Governors frowned at arbitrary blockage of highways through unauthorized processions causing inconveniences to other citizens. Henceforth, processions must necessarily be with Police permit and protection as prescribed by the law.

“NSGF endorsed all the step taken so far by the Kaduna State Governor to contain the situation and assure citizens of its readiness to maintain law and order while respecting the constitutional rights of citizens to practice their faith in a manner devoid of infringing the rights of others.

“NSG reaffirmed their commitment to take measures to revive and grow the economies of Northern states to create jobs and other opportunities as efforts already in top gear to revive agriculture and industries related to agriculture.”

El-Zakzaky’s Shi’ite group and its many controversies

Members of the Shi’ite sect ignited a crisis on Saturday when they blocked  the road, stopping the convoy of Army chief Lt.-Gen Tukur Buratai in Zaria, ABDULGAFAR ALABELEWE reports.

    Buratai: God saved
    me from sect members

CHIEF of Army Staff (COAS) Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai yesterday said that God saved him from members of the Shiite sect during his encounter with them on Zaria/Jos Road at the weekend. He described the sect members as violent.

Lt.-Gen. Buratai stated this in an interview with reporters in Abuja after interacting with members of the Senate Committee on Defence.

A cross-fire ensued on Saturday in Zaria, Kaduna State between Shiite adherents and the convoy of the COAS which led to loss of lives.

Buratai said: “You want to know how I escaped?  It was by the grace of God that I was able to escape from that place. I think NTA was there and they aired the clip, it was very clear. They were violent, definitely this is very clear. The clips are there. That was what happened.”

The Army chief who urged Nigerians to be law abiding, insisted that “nobody should take the law into his hands”.

The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Defence, Samaila Aliyu, who also appeared before the Senate Committee, said that the ministry was planning to pay N10.6 billion compensation to some claimants.

According to him, the compensation fund had been built into the 2016 Budget.

His words: “We have judgments that have been delivered against us. Some have gone up to the Supreme Court.  One is for N8.5 billion and the other is for N2.1 billion. We have backed the request with the judgments.”

The Committee Chairman, Senator Ahmed Lawan, told the Service chiefs that members of the committee were interested in information on funds used to procure equipment.

Lawan said: “We are interested in the funds used for the purchase of equipment. We should have the necessary information and we are particularly glad that equipment has improved. But, so many allegations have been established about the arms purchase scandal.

“Perhaps, at the end of the day, Nigeria will be better when the issues are sorted out and what is meant for equipment for the Army will be used appropriately. The committee will like to know the performance of the 2015 Budget in the ministry of Defence and other institutions under the ministry. That will form the basis we will use to work on the 2016 budget.”

“We are also interested in what is happening in the Niger Delta. We were once loading 400, 000 barrel of oil per day. We will like to know how the Joint Task Force (JTF) and the Navy have been performing their duties without mandate.

“Those arrested over the years need to be known and crude recovered from bunkers should be made available. We do not know if the oil thieves were prosecuted and if the stolen oil was recovered. We want to reduce it to a tolerable level so that it doesn’t harm our economy.

“You can rely on us but only transparency will ensure the relationship and I am sure it will not be a difficult thing to do because President Muhammadu Buhari believes in accountability and transparency.”

Apart from Lt.-Gen. Buratai, other Service chiefs were also at the interactive session.

    Sect alleges leader’s
    wife, son, others killed

•Army: Zakzaky, wife in protective custody

The sect has claimed that the wife of its leaders, a son, the second-in-command were killed in the shootout with soldiers on Saturday.

It alleged a military siege to its leader’s Zaria home. But the military disagreed, saying the sect leader and his wife were in protective custody.

Sources said soldiers, on receiving an alert that the sect members were regrouping, mobilised and surrounded El-Zakzaky’s home on Sunday at Gyallesu,  Zaria.

An associate of the Shi’ite leader, Malam Aliyu Abba, said residents could not sleep throughout the night.

The sect alleged that El-Zakzaky was whisked away by soldiers after destroying his home.

The statement, entitled: ‘Indiscriminate killing of members of the Islamic Movement by the Nigerian Army in Zaria’, was signed by President of the Media Forum of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria Malam Ibrahim Musa.

It alleged that the wife of its leader, Malama Zeenat Ibraheem Zakzaky, his son, Aliyu Ibraheem Zakzaky, the sect’s leader in Kano and the adjudged second-in-command to Sheikh Zakzaky, Sheikh Muhammad Turi, the group’s spokesman, Malam Ibrahim Usman and Dr. Mustapha Sa’eed were among those killed by soldiers.

The statement said: “Following the alleged blockade of the route of the Chief of Army Staff by members of the movement, the Army brutally descended on harmless members of the movement, killing indiscriminately.

“Leading members of the Islamic movement and other members as well, were killed by soldiers, including leader of the Kano Centre, Sheikh Muhammad Turi, Dr. Mustapha Sa’eed, Malam Ibrahim Usman and Sister Jummai Gilima.

“Also killed were Sayyid Aliy, son of leader of the Movement, Sayyid Ibraheem Zakzaky (H), wife of Sayyid Ibraheem Zakzaky (H), Malama Zeenat Ibraheem  and  others. More are being killed as at the time of this statement.

“The sporadic killings took place at three locations including home of the revered leader of the movement at Gyallesu, the Husainiyya Bakiyatullah at the GRA and the Darur Rahma on the Zaria-Jos Road where many harmless people were killed.”

“The killing was so brutal at Gyallesu that even those injured  were identified and killed in cold blood by the soldiers. As at the time of writing this statement, the victims run into their hundreds, if not thousands.

“Considering the gross violation of fundamental human rights and extra-judicial killings perpetrated by the Army, the Islamic Movement condemns these unjustifiable acts.

“We state categorically that the claim by the Army that members attempted to assassinate the Chief of Army Staff was a blatant lie, as the Army came back to launch their attack more than an hour after the COAS passed.

“The Federal Government, through its military, is now on the rampage, in an all-out war with the Islamic movement, its members and structures. The scale of this attack will suggest it was meticulously planned by authorities and now being executed ruthlessly. The alleged attack on COAS Burutai was just an alibi.

“Therefore, with all pointers at the government as the contractor of the killings, we call on Nigerians and the international community to intervene and seek redress for the victims and their family, as many innocent people have unjustifiably been killed and many others injured.

“In the meantime, there is no idea as to the whereabouts of leader of the movement, Sayyid Ibraheem Zakzaky (H) nor his present condition, and aggrieved members of the movement across the country have taken to the streets in protests.”

NIGERIAN Muslims are mainly Sunnis. But there is the Shi’ite minority, particularly in the northern states of Kano, Kaduna and Sokoto, the seat of the Caliphate. There are, however no statistics to determine the exact Shi’ite population in the country, but to give the sect a five per cent of the Muslim population would be on the high side.

The Shi’ite sect, which has in last two decades been in the news for the not-too-good-reasons was “almost unknown” until the 1980s when Sheikh Ibraheem Zakzaky introduced Shia Islam. The sect became known as it gained large followership among those disenchanted with the political and religious establishments.

It was learnt that the El-Zakzaky-led Islamic Movement of Nigeria, otherwise known as Shi’ite, was promoting an ideology with little or no regard for political institutions and claiming that it could not be subservient to the authority except those established under Islamic tenets.

The control of Kaduna, being the base of the Shi’ite leader, was reportedly slipping away from the  government’s control until the coming of the then military administrator of Kaduna State, Col. Hammed Ali. Ali, a retired officer is the Comptroller-General, Nigerian Customs Service (NCS).

In the past, members of the Shi’ite group were indoctrinated to jettison their beliefs in the establishment, to the extent that those who had earlier acquired western education were setting their certificates ablaze to pledge allegiance to an Islamic government under the group.

It was against this background that Col. Ali’s government confronted the sect and its leader. Sheikh Ibrahim Yakubu El-Zakzaky was relocated from the outskirts of Zaria, where he allegedly operated his ‘Islamic’ government to Zaria town.

The sect’s operation was unpronounced until the return of democracy in 1999, when former Governor Ahmed Mohammed Makarfi-led administration accorded El-Zakzaky recognition as a member of Islamic scholars in the state.

Since 1999, Shi’ite, as an Islamic sect, had enjoyed such constitutional right. But, ironically, the group that enjoyed an unfettered right to worship, had always been accused of trampling on the rights of others to free movement and in some cases, its members accused of taking the law into their hands.

Unlike other Islamic sects, Shi’ite had always had reasons to mount  processions involving thousands of its members, including women and children, trekking from one city to the other.

Travellers on the Kaduna-Zaria Road and Kano-Zaria Road are often forced to ply on half of the road, at least twice yearly. Though, the group had always claimed to apply for approval from relevant security agencies before embarking on any procession, its members have never been guided by policemen or the officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).

Residents of Kaduna, Zaria, Kano and other Northern Nigerian cities have been at the mercy of the sect’s members anytime they troop to the streets. The group, which has its own security personnel, subject to thorough checks before being allowed to pass.

Several times, members of the sect have barricaded the roads in Zaria, the base of their leader, subjecting motorists and cyclists to thorough check. In most cases, the roads were closed to vehicles.

The blockage of roads became the genesis of the sect’s problem with the security agents. In July last year, the Shiites clashed with soldiers in Zaria. Thirty-five persons died during a procession to celebrate Quds Day, as well as demonstrating against military operations on Gaza by Israeli forces.

Three of the 35 victims were sons of Sheik El-Zakzaky.

After last year’s incident, prominent Islamic scholar in the North, Sheik Ahmad Mahmud Gumi, in an open letter to El-Zakzaky, told him he was leading millions of youths astray and that, Allah will not forgive him if he (Zakzaky) dies without repenting.

In the letter titled: “My Brother Ibraheem El-Zakzaky: It’s not too late to repent”, Gumi said: “After registering my condolences to the recent loss of your three children who were gunned down by some elements in the military, I find it an obligation to help you see that some of your actions too are the contributing factors in this unfortunate avoidable tragedy.

“What I fear most for you and your followers is that the consequence of this tragedy may further alienate your group from the mainstream society and create a cult -if it’s not already one – with disastrous consequences on you, your followers and the nation at large. For you especially, on the Day of Judgment you will have your account to answers.

“My brother, you have brought a lot of bad innovations among Nigerian Muslims that rather than unite the Muslims are further entrenching the divide without any added value to the worldly development nor the hereafter, but rather with serious theological implications in the hereafter.

“What triggered my attention to your group now is the most recent close encounter I made with a procession of your followers on the highway from Kano to Zaria yesterday (December 8, 2014) on my way to Dutse, about four to six thousand youths and children, trekking long distance for hours. I gave a two hour lecture in Duste and met them still trekking on my way back.

“I cannot understand under which civil or religious law you have the right and liberty to block one side of the double carriage road, forcing motorists to cramp dangerously on one lane. If your action is to propagate your creed, I am telling you, you will only attract the poor young ignorant miscreants of the society, never the sane, except of course, the disgruntled.”

Concluding his letter, Gumi wrote: “Brother, I write you this open letter for others also not necessarily in your sect to get admonition. It is never intended to trigger a sectarian argument. It’s about public order and mannerism. May Allah guide us all to his pleasure and give us the courage to revert back to the truth and what is righteous. Amin.”

But, Zakzaky fired back through the Shi’ite’s Head of Media, Ibrahim Usman (who was killed last Sunday). In the reply, Gumi was accused of writing with insidious intent to pave the way for a greater onslaught on Zakzaky and members of his sect.

The late spokesman quoted Zakzaky as saying: “Dr. Gumi has lost credibility among the Muslim fold, as he constantly sells Israel above the Muslims Ummah, describing Jews as the most religious and intelligent race over the Muslims. Because of his lost credibility, he envies the ever-increasing flow of Shi’ites and Shi’a awareness in Nigeria, while at the same time trying to establish his Wahabbi and Takfir brand of Islam in Nigeria.

“I am not surprised with the content of an open letter written by Dr. Gumi at this particular time (forget the sinister “My Brother” tone and the crocodile tears of condolence). The choice of the time to write the letter gave Dr. Gumi a way, he was all out to attack me and the Arba’een symbolic trek currently taking place across the country. I am used to his constant attacks on me and Shi’a.

“This is not the first time Dr. Gumi is complaining that members of the Islamic Movement led by Sheikh Zakzaky are blocking public roads in the name of procession. In 2009, Gumi registered the same complaint during his Tafsir in Sultan Bello Mosque. He went ahead dangerously to call on the government to shoot those he called ‘Shi’ites’ blocking public roads.

“According to Dr. Gumi, Allah has given the government the ‘license to shoot them’. And the government heeded the call. A week after, armed and combined security operatives shot two people during the Quds Day procession in Zaria. The series of machinations by the government against the Islamic Movement in Nigeria had always been with the tacit support of Dr. Gumi and his adherents.

“We believe that the letter was written with insidious intent to pave way for a greater onslaught on the Islamic Movement and Sheikh Zakzaky. It was also meant to incite Muslims against those he referred to as ‘Shi’tes’. The world arrogant powers, U.S. and Israel, are now all out to assassinate Sheikh Zakzaky and unleash terrorist attacks on all public gatherings of the Movement, especially the Arba’een symbolic trek.

“This is exactly what Dr. Gumi is doing through the letter. He is doing their dirty work. For Dr. Gumi who has lost credibility even among his circle to claim that, the Shi’ites are chanting ‘hate songs’, is the pot calling the kettle black. In most of his Talk Shows that he calls Tafsir, he spends substantial part of his time unleashing venoms on Shi’a and Sheikh Zakzaky, while his uninformed and unruly listeners pollutes the air with war cry.

“For the information of Dr. Gumi, the Shi’ites are embarking on a mass trek to Zaria, as a symbolic gesture to the one in Karbala, Iraq to commemorate the fortieth day after the martyrdom of Imam Husain (AS). The trek is to recall the trials and tribulations faced by the Household of the Holy Prophet, chained and dragged in the scorching desert from Karbala in Iraq, to Damascus in Syria, after the brutal killing of Imam Husain by the army of despotic Yazid.

“This is our faith, our creed; it is our legs and bodies we use for the trek. Why is Dr. Gumi so much worried like the CIA and MOSSAD? I have not even for once heard Dr. Gumi complaining of road blockade during political rallies and other mob activities, but activities of the Shi’ites worried the Dr. Gumi so much that he billows.

“He questioned our rights to embark on a procession or trek, we have every right as citizens to demonstrate for or against, propagate and practice our creed. Let Dr. Gumi rejoice over the killing of Husain, grandson of the Holy Prophet, son of Fatimah and Ali, as he always does.

“As we mourn and beat our chests, we say: ‘O self, you are worthless after Hussein. My life and death are one and the same, so be it if they call me insane! As for the trek, which detests so much, we proclaim as we march forward: If they sever our legs and hands, we shall crawl to the Husain!’” El-Zakzaky said in his reaction.

Despite Gumi’s admonition, the sect’s activities continued until the latest round of confrontation with the military on Saturday, leading to the killing of its members, including one of Zakzaky’ son, his second-in-command and one of his wives, before his eventual arrest by military authorities on Sunday.

Not a few residents of Zaria saw Zakzaky’s arrest as a relief from the group’s excesses. The military confirmed the residents’ mood in a video clip of residents’ jubilation it played at a news conference in Kaduna yesterday.

    •Sect: soldiers killed 1,000 members

The General Officer Commanding (GOC) 1 Mechanised Division, Kaduna, Maj.-Gen. Adeniyi Oyebade, said yesterday that the Zaria-based leader of the Shi’ite Islamic Movement of Nigeria, Sheikh Ibraheem El-Zakzaky and his wife were in the protective custody of the military.

He denied that the wife was killed as alleged by the sect in a statement on Sunday.

Members of the movement clashed with a convoy of the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai, in Zaria last Saturday, leading to the death of Shi’ite members.

But the GOC did not specify where the Sheikh and his wife were kept.

The Shi’ite Acting Director of Information, Ibrahim Musa, alleged in a statement that over 1,000 members of the movement were killed.

The Army boss said the Islamic leader will soon be allowed to speak with his followers to enable them believe he is alive.

He said: “The Shi’ite leader, Zakzaky, is safe and in a protective custody with his wife in a conducive environment.

“We will allow him to speak with his followers. There was jubilation in Zaria as regards army’s engagement in the city.

“As military, we had to do what we did to restore sanity because the sect is fond of mounting illegal roadblocks and checking motorists as if it is a government.”

In a statement by the President, Media Forum of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria, Ibrahim Musa, the sect said: “About 1,000 of our members have been killed. The counting continues. Soldiers are evacuating the bodies to an unknown destination.”

Zaria was shut down, following fear of possible reaction by Shi’ite members.

Banks, shops, markets and schools were shut.

A video clip shown to reporters by the GOC indicated that peace has been restored.

Jubilating residents hailed soldiers, who removed the roadblocks mounted by the sect.

10 killed as soldiers, El-Zakzaky supporters clash in Zaria

•Army: It was assasination attempt on Chief of Army Staff
•Military attack was unprovoked says sect

A pall of tension descended on Zaria, Kaduna State yesterday after soldiers killed at least 10 supporters of outspoken Shi’tte leader, Sheikh Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, during a clash between the entourage of the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant-General Tukur  Buratai, and the Shi’tte members.

The development sparked a war of words between the army and the sect following claim that   members of the Muslim Brotherhood had attempted to assassinate General Buratai.

“Shiites attempt to assassinate the Chief of Army Staff in Zaria”, was the  way Army spokesman, Colonel Sani Kukasheka Usman broke the news  in a tweet under his official tweet handle, @HQNigerianArmy which was also posted on the Nigerian Army website last night.

He later issued a formal statement, saying: “The Shiite Sect on the orders of their leader, Ibrahim El-Zakzaky today (yesterday) in Zaria attacked the convoy of the Chief of Army Staff while on his way to pay homage on the Emir of Zazzau and attend the Passing Out Parade of 73 Regular Recruits Intake of Depot Nigerian Army, Zaria.

“The sect numbering hundreds carrying dangerous weapons, barricaded the roads with bonfires, heavy stones and tyres. They refused all entreaties to disperse and then started firing and pelting the convoy with dangerous objects. The barricade was obviously a deliberate attempt to assassinate the Chief of Army Staff and members of his entourage while on a legitimate official assignment as Special Guest of Honour at the passing out parade which had earlier been widely publicised.

“The troops responsible for the safety and security of the Chief of Army Staff on hearing explosion and firing were left with no choice than to defend him and the convoy at all cost as well as open up the barricaded road for law abiding citizens. This is in line with the Nigerian Army Rules of Engagement and Code of Conduct. This kind of behaviour will not be tolerated from any individual or groups and should not be allowed to repeat itself.

“We wish to implore all Nigerians to continue to be law abiding and remain conscious of other people’s right to life, freedom of movement and passage. The Chief of Army escaped unhurt and continued with his duties.”

The sect dismissed the allegation as a lie, wondering how unarmed people would want to assassinate a service chief.

Its spokesman, Ibrahim Usman, in a counter statement, said:

“At noon today (yesterday) armed soldiers were seen in the precincts of Hussainiyyah Baqiyyatullah, Zaria, where members of the Islamic Movement were to carry out the hoisting of flag to usher in the new month of Maulud, the birth of the Holy Prophet of Islam.

“Similar occasion was previously carried out on the same spot with free traffic flow under the supervision of the Movement’s traffic warders.

“When some brothers met the soldiers to understand the mission of the soldiers, they took position and opened fire indiscriminately, killed many and took away seven of the casualties to an unknown location.

“Based on the foregoing, we believe that the military had pre-planned this and had acted according to their mischievous script. They came with their cameramen, videotaping the whole incidence while it lasted.

“We are however surprised that, spokesman of the military Colonel Kuka Sheka shamelessly came out in the media and issued a press statement to say, that it was an assassination attempt on the Chief of Army Staff on the order of the movement’s leader.

“Why was it that there were no casualties on the side of the military, if it were to be an assassination attempt? What happened was never a clash, but a continuation of act of terrorism by the Nigerian military on the Movement, as was the case in the past.

“We are not surprised by this action, as there were reports spread by the same military the night before that the Shi’ites were to avenge their dead by hired thugs on Friday in Gabari, a village in Zaria.

“The same military also spread rumour that the Shi’ites had killed soldiers, all in attempt to justify today’s (yesterday’s) dastardly act.

“Kuka Sheka should know that once bitten twice shy. The 2014 massacre of 34 members of the Islamic Movement, including three of Sheikh Zakzaky’s children by the military; the attempt on Sheikh Zakzaky’s convoy by the same military are still on our minds.

“No government can flourish successfully with disoriented military, full of trigger-itchy personnel and security operatives trained by CIA and Mossad.

“Until the present government fishes out this cabal in the military and brings the culprits to book, we will believe the government is condoning, violence and terrorism on innocent citizens.”

An eye witness Yusuf Abubakar said, “I saw two soldiers asking the Shi’ite members to remove the barricade but they refused only for the soldiers to open fire on them.

“Suddenly, there was confusion everywhere. I saw more than 30 corpses on the ground before soldiers took them away.”

Another eye witness who pleaded anonymity told The Nation that, “the soldiers were armed to the teeth as they came in about three Hilux vans and armoured personnel carriers.

“They were pleading with the Shi’tte members to clear the way for the Army Chief who was being expected.

“Rather than comply, members of the Islamic Movement said that they had blocked the road for security reasons. They began brandishing clubs and swords, chanting ‘’Allahu Akbar’’(God is great).

“A few shots followed   and we all dispersed. Some Shi’ttes lost their lives in the process.”

El-Zakzaky himself could not be immediately reached but his followers branded the army’s version of the story as an unfair and unjust portrayal of the incident.

Yesterday’s incident is the latest in the series of clashes between security agents and members of the Muslim Brotherhood.

In one of such encounters in July last year, three sons of El-Zakzaky were killed allegedly by soldiers.

The army dismissed the allegation at the time.

But the United Kingdom-based Islamic Human Rights Commission (IHRC) issued a report blaming soldiers for what it called shooting and killing of defenceless members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria between July 25 and 26.

It said that shortly after the Jumat prayers on July 25,the Shi’tte members  embarked on the traditional Al-Quds procession done in support of the Palestinian Cause following the same route it has followed in the last 33 years.

The report said 34 defenceless members of the group were murdered in cold blood as they marched through the streets of Zaria, in Kaduna State.

About 100 others were injured, it said citing interviews with victims, their families, witnesses.

The IHRC also obtained a video footage of soldiers firing at unarmed civilians at the end of the procession.

Besides, it said that it had proof that many of those arrested died in military custody, unable to withstand the brutality they were subjected to by the soldiers.

The procession ended at about 4:30 p.m. and participants, said to be thousands began to disperse stretching over about three kilometres from the meeting point, before soldiers attacked them.

Soldiers allegedly confronted volunteers managing traffic at the PZ Junction on the criteria they were using to give priority pass to cars.

The truck in which the soldiers were driving was allowed to pass only for them to start shooting at protesters indiscriminately.

The IHRC said: “This appears to have been a smokescreen for the attacks, because even as they were being given priority passage, the soldiers started shooting at demonstrators from a very close distance. Ishaq Abdullah was shot and bundled into the army vehicle. The soldiers then sped off, went around the block of shops and cut off a large group who were at the tail end of the procession from the main body. They took positions near these shops and started to shoot at the crowd. The volunteers and other non-partisan eye-witnesses stated that the volunteers did not have weapons and did not instigate the violence.”

Last month, about 20 members of the sect were blown up in an bomb attack during a procession from Kano to Zaria.

A suspected suicide bomber who pretended to be part of the procession set off a bomb at Dakasonye village in Garun Mallam Local Government of Kano State.

Boko Haram claimed responsibility for the attack and called the Shi’ttes heretics, but El-Zakzaky said his group knew those behind the attack.

“We know the names of the contractors and those contracted to commit the massacre, their identity is not hidden from us. Therefore we cannot be cowed by an imaginary Boko Haram tale, let them tell it to the fools and the ignorant. They should know that they are dealing with those with foresight, wisdom and intelligence, and above all with the real religion,” he said.

“There is nothing like a suicide bomber. They torture and drug unsuspecting captives and made them carriers of the explosives which they detonated amidst people.

    ACF seeks justice for El-Zakzaky

The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) has promised to get justice for the 35 Shi’ite members killed by “soldiers” in Zaria, Kaduna State.

Those killed include three sons of the leader of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), Sheik Ibrahim El-Zazakky.

An ACF delegation, led by  Adamu Muhammad, spoke with reporters after paying a condolence visit to the cleric in his Zaria home.

Muhammad said the ACF would not rest until justice is done, adding: “ACF will not fold its arms and see innocent lives being lost for no just cause, for selfish interest and political calculations.”

Presenting a letter of condolence to the cleric, ACF Secretary-General Col. Jerry Uba (rtd) said: “ACF sympathises with a deep sense of grief the tragic attack on your followers, which resulted in the death of three of your sons and many of your devoted followers. Their death has, no doubt, deprived you and the rest of the family of very dear and promising offspring, as well as the company of trusted confidants.”

Sheik El-Zakzaky said the soldiers who shot his followers disguised in his IMN’s uniform to “blackmail law-abiding members of the movement”.

He said the movement had never possessed a firearm in its about 40 years of existence.

…As CAN, Etsu Nupe condole shiite at 40th day prayer

Sheikh Ibrahim El-Zakzaky led Islamic Movement in Nigeria on Thursday conducted the fortieth day prayer for the 33 members, including the leader’s three children allegedly killed in Zaria during the Quds Day procession on July 25, 2014 by men of the Nigerian Army.

Zakzaky said the killing of his sons and 30 members was a blessing in disguise, explaining that, the group  were consoled by the fact that the deceased died as martyrs.

“We are pleased that those who killed us are sons of killers of children of prophets.”

“What happened to us cannot be compared to the tragedy that befell Imam Hussain (AS), in which all his family, including a six-month-old baby was murdered,” he said.

The occasion was witnessed by scholars such as Sayyid Jawad Musawi and Sheikh Hasan Muhammad renowned Islamic scholars from Mashad, Iran.

The occasion which featured special prayers at the Dambo Film Village, the place where the dead were buried, was attended by prominent Nigerians from far and near.

Similarly, a special condolence message to the occasion signed by the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), North-East Youth Wing and signed by Evang. Musa D. Misal, described the killings as unfortunate and commended Sheikh Zakzaky for his exemplary calm.

According to the CAN message, “When the news of the incident reached me, I was very confused as from my view and my understanding in the teachings of Bible, this is just a cold blood murder committed against them. However, All praise be to Allah for the manner you handled the situation patiently and left the matter to Allah alone. With this, you displayed that you are the most patient type among rest of the scholars in Nigeria, and we pray to Almighty God to endow you more in patience”.

Also in his message, the Etsu Nupe, His Royal Highness, Alhaji (Dr.) Yahaya Abubakar extended warm condolence to Sheikh Zakzaky on behalf of the Council of Traditional Rulers of Niger State.

He prayed Allah to grant the people killed eternal rest and the families the fortitude to bear the loss.

  • Military ready to attack us again, says El-Zakzaky

Leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, popularly known as Shi’ite, Sheikh Ibraheem El-Zakzaky, claimed yesterday that the military has again put soldiers on the red alert against his group.

He spoke yesterday at the end of Nahjul Balagha study session at the Hussainiyyah Baqiyyatullah in Zaria.

The movement had accused the military of killing 35 persons, including three of Zakzaky’s sons during a “peaceful’ procession” recently. Many others were also injured.

But 1 Division, Nigerian Army has denied the allegation, saying there was no such directive.

Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, Colonel Abdul Usman, told The Nation on telephone: “As far as I am concerned, I am just hearing that from you now. But I can tell you, there is no such order.”

The cleric said: “The Nigerian military after killing innocent people in Zaria at the recent Quds Day procession, are now on the defensive and therefore spreading rumour that the Shi’ites were going to avenge the killing of their members.

“The military having woefully failed in their plan, have stationed all their barracks on red alert to further unleash more violence and spill innocent blood.

“We will not be surprised if they decided to detonate bombs in their barracks, or even kill some of their own and say it is the Shi’ites taking revenge. They have been doing this all over in the name of Boko Haram.

“Because the military was shamed before the world, they realised that if they unleash further onslaught without justification, they would be further condemned.” He accused the military of also commissioning some “newspapers to fabricate a malicious story and attributing” it to him.

The cleric quoted a memo emanating from an Army officer, which gave alleged fake account of what happened during the recent clash.

He confirmed receiving an invitation from the committee set up by the military under one Colonel Benjamin to investigate what led to the “gun-battle between the  sect and the military.”

He said the military probe panel was a waste of time, as it had already concluded that it was a gun-battle that resulted in the recent lost of lives.

Soldiers, El-Zakzaky in blame game after Zaria massacre

THE celebration of the Quds Day by the Islamic Brotherhood of Nigeria has been an annual event for about 32 years. The event, a solidarity rally with the Palestinians over Israeli occupation of Jerusalem, has been on globally for 35 years, having been declared by former Iranian leader, Ayatollah Khomeini in 1979.

Quds is the Arabic name for Jerusalem. It is also being observed annually as the International Quds Day globally to also oppose Zionism and the control of Jerusalem by the Israelis. In declaring the day, the former Iranian leader said: “I invite Muslims all over the globe to consecrate the last Friday of the holy month of Ramadan as Al-Quds Day and to proclaim the international solidarity of Muslims in support of the legitimate rights of the Muslim people of Palestine.

“For many years, I have been notifying the Muslims of the danger posed by the usurper Israel which today has intensified its savage attacks against the Palestinian brothers and sisters, and which, in the south of Lebanon in particular, is continually bombing Palestinian homes in the hope of crushing the Palestinian struggle.

“I ask all the Muslims of the world and the Muslim governments to join together to sever the hand of this usurper and its supporters. I call on all the Muslims of the world to select as Al-Quds Day the last Friday in the holy month of Ramadan  which is itself a determining period and can also be the determiner of the Palestinian people’s fate  and through a ceremony demonstrating the solidarity of Muslims worldwide, announce their support for the legitimate rights of the Muslim people.

“I ask God Almighty for the victory of the Muslims over the infidels.”

Available information revealed that the day is marked annually throughout the Muslim world, especially in countries with a significant Shite population. Events are also held in Iraq, the Palestinian Gaza Strip, and Syria. Hamas and the Islamic Jihad Movement in Palestine endorsed the Quds Day and hold ceremonies to mark the day.

Outside of the Middle East and the wider Arab World, Quds Day protests have taken place in the United Kingdom, Germany, Canada, Sweden, France, the United States, and some predominantly Muslim countries in East Asia. The celebration of the day had also always gone smoothly in Nigeria, with the police providing security cover to avoid any breakdown of law and order. The protesters carry and burn flags of America and other countries they regard as supporters of Israel’s occupation of Jerusalem and the continued Israeli/Palestinian conflict.

During the procession in Kaduna in 2013, some Christian faithful joined in the procession, which went on peacefully. The 2014 event also went on peacefully in most cities across the north where the event took place, except in Zaria where they had a very ugly encounter with soldiers, leaving several of them dead.

The question being asked at the moment is who sent the soldiers on the mission? Investigations revealed that the procession was already concluded and the protesters were heading home when they encountered some soldiers. The leader of the Shiite movement in Nigeria, Sheikh Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, alleged that the soldiers hid in a sugar cane farm and opened fire on his members. One school of thought have it that the protesters had refused a senior army officer the right of passage, while another said the state governor, Mukthar Ramalan Yero, had asked the group not to embark on the procession or avoid certain routes.

Sheikh El-Zakzaky confirmed that the group refused “a certain military officer” from passing, but asked whether that was enough justification for the killing of his people. He will however not buy the idea that the government refused them staging the protest match.

Addressing journalists in Zaria on the incident, he said: “Reason with this. Kaduna and Zaria are all part of the state. The procession was held in Kaduna the capital city, why then did they shoot people in Zaria? They always wanted to justify their atrocities. It is true that a certain military officer was refused exit. Did that give the licence to shoot?

“For instance, we conducted the Maulud of Sayyedah Zahra in Zaria the same day the governor was given a traditional title. They pleaded that we should ensure smooth running of the two programmes simultaneously, as we shared the same passage. We decided to pave way for them to use the city, while we conducted our programme outside the city. They thanked us.

“As they were going out after their programmes, some of their (aggrieved) members started throwing stones at them; they then felt safe with us and decided to pass through our congregation safely. At one time also, the Vice President had passed safely through our congregation of event. This means what you heard was not right. It has not happened.”

Competent sources within the government told The Nation that the government actually asked the group not to embark on the protest since the ban on public demonstration and procession by the government was still in force. The source said that the government was determined to enforce the ban across the state, but the group defiled the order and embarked on the protest.

The source said: “You have lived in Kaduna for a very long time and you know how violent these people can be. But that is not to say that the government ordered the soldiers to shoot them. What led to the shooting was the fact that they refused the soldiers from passing, blocking the road. That was what led to the conflict between the two.”

The Director-General to Kaduna State Governor on Media and Publicity, Ahmed Maiyaki, who also confirmed that the government asked the group to suspend the protest because of the ban on public procession in the state, told The Nation that the governor has since sent a delegation to commiserate with the leader of the group. Maiyaki said further that while the incident was unfortunate, the security situation in the state, especially the bombings that took place in the state, did not call for any form of procession.

But El-ZakzKy accused the military of deliberately targeting his group, pointing out that despite the peaceful nature of the procession, the military brutalised them.

He said: “The procession in Zaria was also peaceful. What we can say is that they came and committed brutal murder. That is just it. The rally was peacefully concluded, and they came with the full intention of committing murder, and murder they committed.

“They know better why they focused more on our activities here. In 2009, they conducted similar episode. They laid siege in Kofar Doka and opened fire. They also arrested one of my boys. Not my biological son, but he lived with me. His name is Abdul-Rahman Isa who hailed from Saki in Oyo State. His parents are still alive. They captured him alive in their vehicle and later killed him.”

However, the Army denied the allegation against it, saying that the group first fired at soldiers who returned fire in self defence. Director of Army Public Relations (DAPR), Brig-Gen. Olajide Laleye, was quoted as saying: “It’s wrong, it’s false, it’s not true. On the contrary, they are the ones that arrested two of my soldiers, took them to their Camp and brutalised and later set them free. All those things being reflected in the media are not true. The deaths recorded were the ones that occurred during the exchange of fire in self defence.”

Interestingly, the Islamic scholar has been one of the biggest critics of the operations of the Boko Haram insurgents across the north. While celebrating the 2014 Martyr Day of his Islamic Movement in Nigeria, Sheikh El-Zakzaky had accused the military of being the ones shielding wanted Boko Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau, claiming the activity of the group were part of covert operation by the developed nations to balkanize Nigeria and plunder its resources.

He said: “Abubakar Shekau is presently being kept safe in a military camp. Let no one be fooled, there is nothing like Boko Haram. It is a covert operation to balkanise Nigeria and steal its resources in the name of searching for Boko Haram insurgents. If you can fool others, we cannot be fooled. They have realised that there is gold in Zamfara and Zaria, Birnin-Gwari, gold and platinum in Sokoto and Borno. They did it in Iraq, as they went in search of weapons of mass destruction which they never found but plunged the country into chaos.

“The same thing was experimented in Afghanistan before our eyes. The Western countries are experimenting the second phase of the scramble for Africa with great expectations from Nigeria. The U.S. and Israel see the Islamic Movement in Nigeria as the greatest threat to achieving their sinister objective, hence the constant clampdown attempt and arrest of our members.”

El-Zakzaky’s stand on the issue of the Boko Haram insurgency has been unambiguous. In 2011, he described the Boko Haram activities as a hoax, saying the bombings done by the group was a way of ridiculing Islam, perpetrated by America and her cohorts. He believed that Boko Haram was initiated to deceive people into believing that an extremist Islamic organisation exists and that it is going about killing and bombing places with the intention of establishing an Islamic government, adding that “this is an act of subjecting Islam to ridicule”.

He also believe that some Muslim leaders in the country were keeping quiet on the operations of the group to protect themselves and their offices, saying, “Whichever position you might be holding and protecting, be it traditional, political or ministerial, is going to be lost with the success of their intentions.”

At the moment, there are fears that the group may regroup and take up an offensive against the military like they did during the Abacha era before their leader was arrested and detained by the government. Several of their members were killed in confrontation with security agents during the Abacha regime. However, since El Zakzaky was released from detention, his members have not had any altercation with security agents in the north except in Sokoto where they have been having a running battle with other Islamic sects.

But there has been reported casualty in such clashes and during the processions of the group since El Zakzaky’s release. He was quoted as saying that the group will decide the next line of action at a later date. But when that will be and what the next line of action will be known in the coming days.

However, some of his followers under the auspices of Academic Forum of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria believe that the attack on their members was premeditated. Their spokesman, Shuaib Ahmad, said in a statement on the movement’s website that “the manner in which the attack was carried out shows that it was a premeditated plan to create Borno-styled chaos and anarchy or insurgency in Zaria, so they could then come in the name of fighting Boko Haram. This daylight commando-style attack on innocent civilians reflects the style of the Zionist state of Israel against innocent and defenceless civilians in Gaza, and indeed the whole of Palestine. We are clearly convinced that the soldiers who carried out this gruesome murder of innocent civilians were acting on a premeditated and organised command from Abuja”.

The group said further that the “gruesome murder of his children, who they captured alive but killed in detention, reflects the growing frustration of these Zionists through their puppet governments and agents. These cold-blooded murders of Friday 25th July 2015 raise some fundamental questions begging for answers:

“For what crime were Sheikh El-Zakzaky’s children killed? What is the crime of the innocent civilians on procession to warrant their murder? Even if participating in a procession was a crime, is it punishable with killings without trial?

“Why was Zaria singled out for the extra-judicial killings out of the over 22 towns the same procession took place in Nigeria? Is it the duty of the military to handle civil unrest or arrest or disperse civilians peacefully gathered together? Who gave the Military the right to shoot and kill civilians without conviction in a competent law court? If the military feels so strong and have this much desire to kill, why have they not gone to where people are fighting them with arms? This gruesome murder is simply an act of cowardice”.

They argued that the “show of force and shooting practice the Nigerian military forces exhibited is a direct reflection of the general hatred, wickedness, frustration and desperation of the military against our leader, the Islamic Movement in Nigeria and the religion of Islam in Africa, as being revived by Sheikh Ibraheem Zakzaky for the last three decades.

“The wanton killings and target of assassinations are a direct reflection of these wickedness and depression. Nigerians must now appreciate years of warnings and preaching of the Sheikh, that Nigerian security agencies are the sponsors and masterminds of all the insurgency we have been witnessing in the name of Boko Haram.

“The Friday 25th event has finally proven to all gullible Nigerians that the military are responsible for all the killings of innocent civilians and destruction of properties in the country in the name of fighting insurgency.

“We demand that the government comes out to offer explanation as to what happened. An independent panel of enquiry must investigate these killings with a view to bringing all those responsible to book. We demand that all our brothers and sisters still being held be released unconditionally immediately.
