  • Akeredolu wins as Ondo students elect leaders at 10th convention

    Members of the National Association of Ondo State Students (NAOSS) have elected leaders who will oversee the association’s affairs for one year.

    The election took place during the 10th convention of the body  on Saturday in Akure, the Ondo State capital. The electoral process was conducted under close supervision of independent observers and security agents.

    About 105 delegates from 55 recognised tertiary institutions nationwide were accredited to elect the leaders.

    The electoral committee chairman, Oluwatobi Ebiwonjumi, while announcing the results, declared Comrade Emmanuel Akeredolu as president-elect after polling 87 votes of the 104 total votes cast. Emmanuel defeated Ayomipo Oloyede, who got 10 votes, and Wealth Akerele, who got six votes. A vote was voided.

    Ebiwonjumi described the election as peaceful and credible, thanking the candidates for displaying maturity during and after the election.

    The outgoing president, Charles Iwakun, congratulated his successor, noting that his determination to conduct free and fair election was achieved. According to him, the outgoing administration set good pace for the development of the association, advising Akeredolu to consulate on his achievement. He urged his successor to be magnanimous in victory by extending a hand of fellowship to his opponents.

    Akeredolu, a student of Ekiti State University (EKSU), thanked the delegates for the confidence reposed in him. He promised to bring positive change to the association, pledging to work with his opponents.

    Mr Alex Gbologe, an observer from the National Orientation Agency (NOA), who spoke on behalf of the independent observers, expressed satisfaction with the conduct of the election. He said the process was devoid of rancour, fighting and abusive words.

    Other elected include Vice President, Omotayo Olibamoyo, General Secretary, Gbenga Ogunderu, Public Relations Officer, Alex Adesuyi, Treasurer, Oluwagbenga Ogunji, Director of Special Duties, Oluwaseun Aruwajoye, Financial Secretary, Opemipo Amusa, and Social Director, John Daudu.

    Others are Sports Director, Temitope Menawonu, Assistant General Secretary, Janet Akinyuwa, Senate President, Lawrence Oguniyi, Deputy Senate President, Tony Odimayo, Chief Whip, Excel Oloriegbe and Clerk, Oluwafemi Omolaja.

  • Campus writers elect leaders at maiden convention

    Members of the National Union of Campus Journalists (NUCJ) – the umbrella body for student-writers – converged on the University of Ibadan (UI) for their maiden national convention. The convention was attended by delegates from some tertiary institutions.

    Delivering a keynote speech titled: Student advocacy: The dawn of a new age, Mr Oluwatope Alabi, a journalist with the Osun State branch of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), Osogbo, said the activities of student-journalists had boosted campus advocacy in the last eight years, which exposed cases of injustice suffered by students.

    He said pressure groups, such as the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), had failed in fighting for the rights and welfare of students across campuses, adding that students now look up to campus journalists whenever their rights are trampled upon.

    He said: “As the last hope of your colleagues, posterity will not forgive you when they suffer injustice and you don’t write about it. You must speak for others and let their welfare be your happiness. In doing so, intimidations will come from the authorities, but a committed journalist will always have his way.”

    Urging the NUCJ members to unite and forge a common front in achieving their goals, Alabi said: “Remove all barriers that can prevent you from collaborating among yourselves and speak with one voice. Face the objective of serving students everywhere; spread your tentacles to private and faith-based institutions. Build a formidable partnership with Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) and other relevant bodies. You will be a force to reckon with across tertiary institutions.”

    Other speakers at the event included Mr Salaudeen Kamorudeen of the Fountain University, and Mr James Peter, publisher of  The Biographer.

    The convention featured election into the executive and legislative arms of the union. Ibrahim Alamode, a UI student, was elected president, while Aisha Shittu of the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) became the Vice President, and Mubarak AbdulHameed of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) is National Secretary.

    Also, Hammad Obanaye of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY) in Abeokuta, Ogun State, was elected the Publicity Secretary, Folarin Kolawole of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA) in Ondo State became the Southwest Zonal Secretary, Muhammed Akinyemi of UNILORIN is North Central Secretary, and Victor Ifegwu of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), Southeast Secretary.

    Ifeoluwa Adediran of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) in Ile-Ife, Osun State, defeated two male candidates to become the Senate President. Other principal officers of the legislative arm are the Deputy Senate President, Ifedayo Ogunyemi (MAPOLY), Chief Whip, Ifedayo Olorunfemi of the Federal School of Statistics.

    Ibrahim, in his acceptance speech, promised to make the union effective and strong, while calling for members’ support.

  • 11 parties elect candidates

    11 parties elect candidates

    No fewer than 11 political parties have elected candidates for the September 10 governorship election in Edo State.

    There are, however, insinuations that some of the parties may substitute their candidates, owning to financial reasons, by giving the ticket to chieftains who can provide finance for campaigns.

    Some aggrieved aspirants, who lost out at the primaries, were said to be discussing with the smaller parties.

    The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had said only nine political parties indicated interest in the race.

    Only the Peoples Democratic Party is presenting two candidates, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu of the Ahmed Makarfi’s faction and Matthew Iduoriyekemwen, who is supported by Senator Ali Modu Sheriff.

    Other candidates are Godwin Obaseki of the All Progressives Congress and Don Pedro Obaseki emerged candidate of the Accord Party, the Labour Party picked Comrade Cyril Odibo. Osaro Onaiwu is the candidate of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA), Adviser Shedrack Nowamagbe was elected on the platform of the United Progressive Party (UPP). a broadcaster, Thomas Sadoh, is the candidate of the Progressive Peoples Allaince.

    Others are Frank Ukonga was elected by the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP). Pastor Peters Omoragbon is the candidate of the National Conscience Party. The KOWA party elected one Mr. Thompson Osadolor while Bishop Akhalamhe was elected candidate of the People for Democratic Change.

    The Peoples Democratic Movement (PDM) opted to adopt Pastor Ize-Iyamu as its candidate.

    The Chairman of PDM, Nosa Omorodion, said the party’s decision was because  there was no need for smaller parties to present governorship candidates that could not go anywhere in the polls.

    Omorodion said the PDM would rally other smaller political parties to give their support to Pastor Ize-Iyamu.

  • Ogungbangbe is Owaloko-elect

    Kingmakers have elected Prince Akeem Benjamin Ogungbangbe as the Owaloko-elect of Iloko-Ijesha in Oriade Local Government Area, Osun State.

    The kingmakers, who were made up of high chiefs, warrant chiefs and other reputable members of the royal class at the weekend, elected Ogungbangbe after two years of Oba Oladele Olashore’s death.

    Ogungbangbe, who polled 11 votes out of the 13 votes cast, emerged victorious and was declared winner of the election in line with the traditions of the kingdom.

    Confirming the Ogungbangbe’s victory, the Chairman, Iloko Traditional Council and Kingmakers, High Chief Olusola Ogunsanya, said there were 11 regular kingmakers and four warrant chiefs, purposefully appointed by the government to elect a new Owaloko of Iloko-Ijesa.

    He explained that of the 15 kingmakers,13 participated and voted for the candidates of their choices.

    The other two, he added, “absconded for reasons best known to them”.

    He said: “The four ruling houses were duly notified to submit one or two candidates each in accordance with the dictates of Iloko Chieftaincy Declaration. But  eventually, seven candidates were presented and their names were submitted.

    “Prince Akeem Benjamin Ogungbangbe of Ajagusi-Ekun Ruling House won the election with 11 votes by defeating other six candidates.”

    He adjudged the election process as being peaceful, transparent,

    credible, free and fair.

    Ogunsanya said the community was only waiting for the final announcement from the state government in consonant with the procedures taken by the kingmakers.

    Ohanaeze women elect officers

    The women’s wing of the Pan-Igbo organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, at the weekend in Enugu elected a new executive.

    Mrs. Calista Nkiru Adimachukwu was elected the national woman leader.

    She got 78 votes to beat her opponent, Mrs. Chika Ibeneme, who got 77 votes. Both hail from Anambra State.

    Election Committee’s Secretary Loretta Aniagolu said besides the National Women Leader’s office, 16 other positions were unopposed.

    Aniagolu explained that the women contested for the offices of the national women leader, deputy national women leader, national vice women leader for each state, secretary and treasurer.

  • Retired teachers elect new leaders

    REVEREND James Kayode Owoyemi is the new Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners, Teacher Pensioners Branch (TPB), Lagos State branch.

    Owoyemi who was the former secretary of the TPB, Lagos, was elected with 40 votes – two more than his opponent, Chief Ogunmefun Michael, during the union’s election held at the Baptist Academy premises, in Obanikoro, Lagos.

    The Vice Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP), Lagos State, Chief Abraham Folarin Akinwale, who announced the results of the election, had earlier told the contestants that the election was a call to serve and not a do or die affair.

    Outgoing chairman, Mr Isaac Folafgade Afolabi, who served for 10 years, told The Nation that his tenure was beset with travails.

    “My tenure witnessed series of travails ranging from the TPB’s brawl with the State NUP to incessant litigation by some dissidents. To God be the glory, the case was dismissed in December 2013 in favour of the Teacher Pensioners Branch, Lagos,” he said.

    Afolabi also enjoined the members to work with the new executives for the progress of the TPB.

    In his inaugural speech, Owoyemi urged other contestants to join hands with him to lift the union. He also urged the Lagos State government to accede to the group’s demands

    “Pensioners in Lagos State are demanding for payment of the 36 months of the 142 per cent. A lot of primary school teachers retirees who are yet to be paid their gratuity should be settled before the end of our erudite, dynamic, knowledgeable Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola’s tenure.

    “I am short of words been elevated from the secretary to the post of the Chairman. This is truly a charge to work.” he added.
