Edo gov: Politicians who announced fake election results now crying of rigging

Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, on Saturday, accused desperate politicians of fabricating the results of the September 21 governorship election and spreading them on social media, only to now cry foul over alleged rigging.

Okpebholo made the remarks during a homecoming reception held at the Esan Central Local Government Council secretariat, celebrating his victory with the people of Edo Central Senatorial District.

The governor expressed disappointment that those accused of manipulating the election results were now complaining about their loss.

He declared that “these individuals” would continue to fail in future elections and waste their money, time, and resources on fruitless efforts.

He said: “I thank Edo people for the overwhelming support given to our party (All Progressives Congress) during the September 21 governorship election in Edo State. I am happy for the resounding victory God gave us.

“I thank President Bola Tinubu and the leadership of our party for not playing anti-party, but stood firm for justice and equity to prevail, which led to the success and victory recorded by our party.

“The people who wrote results and were announcing fake results on the Internet, are the same people crying today that somebody rigged the election.

“It is sad to say that the criminals are crying today that they have lost and will continue to lose. They are spending money day and night and wasting their money and will wait in vain.

“Edo people have spoken. They have chosen the path of development, peace and unity. This is what Edo people have chosen and that is how it will remain.”

Okpebholo hailed Esan people for standing by him and ensuring a resounding victory.

He said: “Thank you (Esan people) for the confidence reposed in me and thank you for your votes. This crowd has shown that you voted for me.

“I will not disappoint Edo people. I will not disappoint Esan people. I will do the right things, and allow justice to prevail.

“I thank the traditional rulers in the entire Esan land, leaders of Esan land, party leaders, and all those who stood by me to become the Governor of Edo State, and above all, I give God the glory.”

The Onojie of Uromi, His Royal Highness, Anselm Aidenojie II, said the people of Esan land were happy that their son is the governor of Edo state.

The monarch said: “We, the traditional rulers from Esan land, went round Edo State to plead for support to produce the governor, and today it is a reality.

“We thank the Oba of Benin, Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo Oba Ewuare ll and grateful to all for the support. We believe that Edo governor will deliver the dividends of democracy to the people of Edo State.”

The reception was also attended by Secretary to Edo State Government (SSG), Musa Ikhilor; Chief of Staff, Gani Audu; and members of the Edo House of Assembly; other top government officials; and party faithful.

  • Rivers: INEC to resume collation of election  results

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has fixed April 13 for supplementary election in  Rivers State.

Besides, the commission is to resume collation of results of the last governorship and state Assembly elections from April 2 to 5.

INEC, however, noted that election had been concluded in 21 state constituencies.

The collation of the results for the election held on March 9 was suspended due to violence.

The Commission set up a Fact-Finding Committee that visited the state and submitted its report which revealed that while election could not hold in a few areas, they were successfully concluded in others with the declaration of winners in 21 state constituencies. Collation was ongoing at the time of the suspension of the process.

Announcing the outlined activities and timeline to resolve the electoral logjam in the state, the INEC National Commissioner in charge of Information and Voter Education Committee, Festus Okoye, said the commission will on March 30 meet with critical actors in the state after which the headquarters of the commission will release a guideline for the continuation of the process.

Okoye spoke at a press briefing at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja. He noted that there will also be an inter-agency meeting between the commission and others a day before the stakeholders meeting in Rivers.

Revalidation of observers, the commission said, will be done simultaneously in Abuja and Rivers State between March 25 and March 31.

The state chapters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) disagreed over the new timeline given by INEC to conclude elections in the states.

The APC, through its Publicity Secretary Chris Finebone declared that INEC’s announcement was suspect and received with mixed feelings, since the electoral commission had not shown sufficient good faith.

PDP Chairman Felix Obuah , in a press statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Jerry Needam stated that members of the party received the INEC’s news with optimism.

Rivers APC said: “As a major stakeholder in the Rivers State political space, APC received with mixed feelings, INEC’s timeline for concluding the governorship and House of Assembly elections that started on March 9. INEC has not shown sufficient good faith in the way it brought the collation to an abrupt stop (on March 10), without cogent, verifiable and convincing reasons.

“The supposed umpire (INEC) went ahead to announce that collation for 17 local government areas (out of 23 LGAs in Rivers) had been concluded, as against the records provided by our situation room. And to make matters worse, INEC refused, failed or neglected to name the said 17 LGAs where it claimed collation had been concluded.

“INEC curiously announced that it had dropped four LGAs’ collation officers confirmed to be PDP card-carrying members, without the umpire clearing the air about the status of the LGAs’ results the four ad hoc personnel supposedly collated.”

The main opposition APC, which backed the African Action Congress (AAC), since court order did not allow it to present candidates for the elections, also wondered why the four indicted collation officers of INEC would be unfit for the job, while the collations they conducted were acceptable.

The party said: “Why is INEC jittery to name the 17 local government areas, if not for the simple reason that some underhand dealings might have taken place, for which it is covering up? With the violation of the collation process by Governor Nyesom Wike when he stormed the Obio/Akpor LGA Collation Centre (at the council’s secretariat in Rumuodomaya, Port Harcourt in the night of March 9), where his Chief Security Officer (CSO) and security detail shot an army captain and other soldiers in the process, why does it seem that INEC’s body language is suggesting that Obio/Akpor LGA’s collation has been completed?

“To the APC, INEC is up to some mischief, clearly pointing to a clear determination to rig the overall results of the March 9 elections in favour of Wike and the PDP. The signs are visible enough to the blind and loud enough to the deaf. All the shenanigans so far exhibited by INEC only go to confirm that fear.”

PDP chairman said: “Even though we frown at the length of the timeline issued by INEC for the collation, declaration and conclusion of the election process in Rivers State, we received the news with optimism. Rivers State PDP is waiting patiently for the process to be concluded, because the people of Rivers State overwhelmingly voted for our party.

“We urge Rivers people to remain calm, as the mandate they freely gave to Governor Wike and the PDP on March 9 will be affirmed at the end of the collation process. Victory for the PDP will come at the end of the exercise. Rivers State is PDP. The people massively voted for the PDP, as all the figures indicate.”

On the letter by Rivers elders to President Muhammadu Buhari to intervene in Rivers political crisis, to prevent anarchy, Obuah berated the eminent personalities, including a former governor of the state, Chief Rufus Ada-George; and an ex- Culture Minister Alabo Tonye Graham-Douglas.

He described Ada-George, Graham-Douglas and others as self-acclaimed elders and card-carrying members of the APC, who, according to him, were allegedly working for Transportation Minister Rotimi Amaechi, a former Rivers governor.

  • Financial markets await election results

The stock market is literally on a momentary pause as investors await political direction to determine their investment decisions. The momentum of activities and price rally at the equities market slowed down at the weekend, capping a week-long tip-tap trading that was overshadowed by the earlier postponement of the general elections.

Equities recorded average decline of 0.61 per cent last week, equivalent to net capital depreciation of N74 billion. They  had in the days leading to the postponed February 16, 2019 elections sustained a strong rally, with net capital gains of N805 billion within 11 trading days preceding the postponement.

Despite the gathering earnings season that saw the release of audited results and dividends of many listed companies, all three major indicators that determine the turnover of activities at the stock market closed at the weekend negative. Total turnover volume, value and number of deals at the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) declined by 47.7 per cent, 37.28 per cent and 28.85 per cent.

Total turnover stood at 1.48 billion shares worth N17.65 billion in 20,449 deals last week compared with a total of 2.83 billion shares valued at N28.14 billion traded in 28,739 deals in the week that preceded the election postponement.

The All Share Index (ASI)- the main index that tracks share prices of all quoted companies on the NSE, closed weekend at 32,515.52 points, 0.61 per cent below its week’s opening index of 32,715.20 points.

Aggregate market value of all quoted equities also dropped from that of February 15 closing value of N12.200 trillion to close weekend at N12.126 trillion. The average year-to-date return slipped to 3.45 per cent.

The pricing trend showed cautious optimism, with steady corporate earnings, good valuations and attractive yields at the market moderated by political risk.

Although there were almost an advancer for every decliner, market analysts said the political risk loomed larger than other considerations. There were 34 advancers last week as against 60 advancers in the previous week while the number of decliners rose to 38 stocks last week as against 21 stocks recorded in the week preceding the postponement.

At the fixed-income markets, overnight lending rate rose by 2.75 per cent to close weekend at 20.25 per cent.

Average yields in the bond market also increased marginally with sell pressure within the mid to long-term securities. While continued support from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) kept the Naira stable, there was considerable increase in activities at the official Investors & Exporters’ window of the apex bank.

Total turnover at the Investors & Exporters’ window rose by 26 per cent with almost all the deals done within N360-369 per Dollar range.

Analysts at GTI Securities said the market’s attention had shifted to the rescheduled election and investors were waiting to see the outcome of the crucial presidential and national assembly elections, which most agreed will set the tone of other state elections.

Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Capital Assets Limited, Mr Ariyo Olushekun, said the market’s direction will be determined by the resultant confidence in the outcome of the national elections.

According to him, the appetite of foreign investors, who account for half of transactions at the Nigerian stock market, will be moderated by the political risk.

He said the Nigerian market will break into a major rally once foreign investors return to aggressive investment in Nigerian market.

Financial market analyst and Fixed Income Trader, FSDH Merchant Bank, Mr Babajide Sholanke, said the market anticipates the results of the elections because the outcome will determine either the policy consistency of the ruling government or a “wait-and-see” of new policy outcome if the opposition party wins.

“The outlook for the market is still a wait and see situation. The market has held back on investment and consumption expenditure because of the seeming uncertainty of the election outcome. Thus, we would continue to witness a wait and see approach if PDP wins and opening up of wallet if APC wins,” Sholanke said.

He said yields at the fixed-income market are also expected to remain around the current level after the elections while foreign exchange rates are expected to be stable in the short to medium term because of strong external reserves.

Cordros Capital stated that sentiments in the Nigerian equities market turned negative as the tense political environment acted to drive investors’ apprehension towards risky assets.

“With election risk now out of the picture, as we anticipate a peaceful exercise, together with the still supportive macroeconomic picture, we guide investors to cherry pick fundamentally sound stocks in a bid to ride the wave of the market rally, post-polls,” Cordros Capital stated.

Afrinvest Securities noted that investors reacted negatively to the postponed presidential election before recalculating the political risk and subsequently re-positioning in the market.

Afrinvest Securities stated that cautious trading, in terms of volumes and higher sell-offs moderated the stock market performance.

According to Afrinvest Securities, most investors stayed on the sidelines last week as the uncertainty regarding the elections heightened by the middle of the week.

“We expect market direction to be largely determined by the outcome of the presidential election,” Afrinvest Securities stated.

  • Boss Mustapha votes, urges sportsmanship over election results

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha, cast his vote in Yola yesterday morning, advising electoral candidates to exhibit the spirit of sportsmanship and accept the results in good faith.

The SGF, who arrived his Gwadabawa ward voting unit opposite New Government House in Yola a few minutes to 10, told newsmen after casting his vote that he was impressed by the peaceful conduct of the electorate and that he would be glad if candidates would similarly conduct themselves in a peaceful manner when the results began to come out.

“I hope this peaceful atmosphere will continue as the results are announced,” he said, recalling how Goodluck Jonathan’s sense of sportsmanship calmed the nation in 2015 and recommending such attitude to all those currently seeking votes.

Boss Mustapha commended the people for turning out in large numbers and waiting patiently to cast their votes despite the disappointment the previous Saturday when the election was rescheduled.

“It’s amazing to see how people are here waiting patiently and orderly to exercise their franchise and to elect their leaders,” he said.

  • AU urges Congo to delay final election result

The African Union (AU) has called on authorities in the Congo to delay releasing the final results of the recent elections following reports of vote rigging, an AU statement said on Friday.

“The bloc met on Thursday in Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa and concluded there were serious doubts on the conformity of the provisional results, as proclaimed by the National Independent Electoral Commission.

“Accordingly, the heads of state and government called for the suspension of the proclamation of the final results of the elections,’’ it said.

Several international media outlets reported on Tuesday that leaked voting data showed that runner-up Martin Fayulu had definitely won at the polls on Dec. 30.

Britain’s Financial Times (FT), as well as France’s RFI and TV5 Monde, said they were leaked full voting data, which had not yet been released.

Analysis showed the man announced the winner by the electoral commission recently, Felix Tshisekedi, actually lost.

Fayulu has cried foul, and appealed to the country’s highest court to order a recount, a matter it is now deliberating.

Fayulu has suggested Tshisekedi and President Joseph Kabila did a back-room deal after early results showed Kabila’s chosen successor, Emmanuel Ramazani Shadary, finished third.

Western powers have not congratulated Tshisekedi, and France has expressed concern over the official results, which saw Tshisekedi win 38.57 per cent of the vote to Fayulu’s 34.8 per cent.

On Thursday, the AU said it would “urgently dispatch’’ a high-level delegation including its chairperson, Rwandan President Paul Kagame, with the view to reach “a consensus on a way out of the post-electoral crisis in the country.’’

  • 2019: Election results will reflect electorate’s yearnings, Buhari assures

THOSE accusing the Federal Government of plotting to manipulate next year’s elections in favour of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC)  are living with the fear of the harmless, President Muhammadu Buhari said yesterday.

He promised that the results of the polls would reflect the yearnings of the electorate. He said he understood the yearnings of Nigerians and strongly believed in the collective dream for a greater country.

“All will be done to ensure that the results of 2019 elections reflect the will of the people,” the President assured Finland Ambassador to Nigeria, Dr Jyrki Juhani Pulkkinen, who was at the State House to present his Letter of Credence.

A statement by the Special Adviser on Media & Publicity, Femi Adesina, quoted Buhari as saying that Nigerians reserved the right to elect leaders at the various levels in 2019, and that all efforts would be made to safeguard the integrity of the process.

”I respect the people’s feelings. I assure all that we will have a free and fair election next year,’’ the President was quoted as saying.

The President congratulated Finland on its 101st Independence anniversary (December 6) and commended its growing relations with Nigeria, especially in the areas of Information Communication Technology (ICT), trade and education.

The Finland envoy said the areas of mutual benefit in relations with Nigeria could be extended to electricity, smart technology and crises management initiatives, pointing out that he would work hard to improve the trade figures and exchanges.

He said: “We will like to contribute to Africa rising, and we know that Nigeria is the biggest country on the continent, so we are very interested in the growth of Nigeria.’’

At the level of the United Nations (UN), Dr. Pulkkinen said his country would continue to support the restructuring of the multilateral institution to give greater roles to African countries, including Nigeria.

Also receiving the Letter of Credence from French Ambassador Jerome Pasquier, President Buhari described France President Emmanuel Macron’s visit to Nigeria’s capital, Abuja, and his stopover in Lagos, as impressive, adding that it would bolster blateral relations.

The President said he was impressed with relations between France and its former colonies in Africa, noting that France had been playing positive roles in promoting security and economic growth in the countries.

“France is investing so much in Nigeria and we are grateful,’’ he added.

President Buhari, however, called for more support in the fight against terrorism as the networks keep expanding with fighters moving across borders to support insurgents.

Responding, the envoy said that President Macron would continue to support Nigeria, especially in the war against terrorism, with specific interest in gathering and sharing of intelligence.

He commended the President for Nigeria’s role in resolving the crisis in Togo and Guinea Bissau.

President Buhari also received the Letter of Credence from the Ambassador of Czech Republic, Marek Skolil, assuring him of improved economic relations in areas, such as solid minerals exploration.

Mr Skolil said his country would continue to support Nigeria’s military in the fight against terrorism in Northeast.

“Nigeria is a very important country for us. We look forward to stronger ties, particularly with the armed forces.’’ he said.

Gambian president Jammeh in U-turn, rejects election results

    Ghanaian President Mahama blames
    defeat on praise-singers, corruption

•Accept verdict of the Gambian people, Borrow tells Jammeh

There is tension in Gambia yesterday as President Yahya Jammeh, who accepted defeat in the country’s presidential election about a week ago, turned round to annul the results on Friday. He also called for “fresh and transparent elections which will be officiated by a god-fearing and independent electoral commission.”
Reacting, the president-elect has urged Jammeh to accept the verdict of the Gambian people.
When Jammeh, who had severally been described by critics as an autocratic ruler, accepted the result of the election, ceding power after 22 years, to a coalition led by the opposition leader, Adama Barrow, there was celebration in the West African country even as observers praised him for showing ‘unexpected’ maturity.
But the celebration was cut short yesterday as Jammeh recanted his earlier acceptance of the results of the polls in a television broadcast. “After a thorough investigation, I have decided to reject the outcome of the recent election. I lament serious and unacceptable abnormalities which have reportedly transpired during the electoral process,” he said.
Following the resultant tension, there were reports yesterday that troops have been deployed to the streets of Banjul, the capital of the Gambia, to quell any likely protest or resistance. It was reported that “soldiers were seen placing sandbags in strategic locations across the capital, Banjul, a development that triggered widespread unease among the already spooked population, who had been panic-buying food before the vote due to fear of unrest.”
Already, observers and human rights activists have condemned Jammeh’s change of heart.
One of the reports quoted Babatunde Olugboji, Deputy Programme Director at the New York-based Human Rights Watch, as saying the organisation was “deeply concerned by reports of belated objections to the Gambian election results raised by President Jammeh”.
He called on “the international community, notably the Economic Community of West African States and the African Union” to “loudly protest against any unlawful attempt to subvert the will of the Gambian people”.

  • Kebbi election results

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is yet to declare the results of the presidential, Senatorial and House of Representatives elections conducted on Saturday.

Sources say the late arrival of materials on voting day which led to late conclusion of voting is largely responsible for the development.

The massive turnout of voters during the poll is also said to be another factor why collation of results at the wards and local government level have been unduly delayed.

As at the time of filing this report, no collated result from any of the local governments has arrived at the state capital, Birnin-Kebbi.

However, investigation revealed that the All Progressives Congress (APC) is ahead is some of the results announced at polling units and wards so far.
