    Fayose congratulates Buhari

The Ekiti State Governor, Mr. Ayodele Fayose, has congratulated General Muhammadu Buhari, presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), on his victory in the March 28 presidential election.

Mr. Fayose in a state broadcast urged Nigerians to accept the outcome of the Saturday presidential election in good faith.

He said: “the election result is the will of God and Nigerians, and all lovers of peace, progress and development of Nigeria must accept it.”

The governor hailed the resilience and commitment of President Goodluck Jonathan and General Buhari (rtd).

The governor has been an unrepentant critic of Buhari who have impugned on his integrity, saying he is too old to govern Nigeria, sick and other petty accusations.

Fayose said the election results should not be seen as victory or loss for any political party, adding that: “To me, Nigerians and democracy won.”

He praised Nigerians for believing in the democratic process, adding that; “By this election, Nigerians have shown that Democracy has come to stay in the country.

  • No reason to cancel Rivers election – INEC

No reason to cancel Rivers election – INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has acknowledged receiving a petition from the All Progressive Congress on Sunday seeking the cancellation of the last Saturday election.

“Sunday morning, I received a petition from @APCNigeria demanding for the cancellation & rescheduling of elections.

“I circulated this memo to the Committee. We reviewed it and set up a 3 man Committee to Rivers and returned this morning with their observations.

“There were a number of points as to why the Commission should cancel/reschedule elections:

    1) No elections, 2) No result sheets and 3) Substitutions of officials.

“We cannot establish any cancellation or substitution of results and we sent a list of collation officers to the state.

“Officials fail to show up to work for several reasons and it is up to the REC to substitute from the pool of officials they have.

“We do not believe the allegations are substantial enough to require the cancellation/rescheduling of the elections in Rivers.

“The decision of the Commission is that we will take the results of the elections in Rivers state.

“We have taken measures to make sure that reoccurrences do not occur in the future,” Jega said.

Speaking with The Nation in Umuahia, Ezekwesili alleged that in his local government, Umunneochi, the lawmaker representing the council in the House of Representatives used security agents to intimidate members of other parties.

He alleged that the federal lawmaker used security agents attached to her to intimidate APGA members and agents and in some cases allegedly snatched ballot boxes in collaboration with the council chairman.

Ezekwesili accused the electoral officer of “manifest compromise”.

His words: “The election can be described as the worst.”

Ezekwesili gave instances when the lawmaker, the council chairman and the presiding officers refused to declare the number of accredited voters before voting began.

He said: “A situation where the presiding officer, in collaboration with the lawmaker and the transition committee chairman, refused to announce the number of accredited voters for the election, which is against the electoral act, is unacceptable.”

The legislator gave an instance in a polling booth where only 180 voters were accredited.

He said the activities of the federal lawmaker were recorded in video and photographs and would be made public at the appropriate time, to substantiate his allegation of electoral malpractices.

Election: US, UK warn against interference in collation

The Governments of the United States and the United Kingdom have warned against any attempt to distort the will of Nigerians as expressed at the polls.

While noting that there are no evidence of systemic manipulation of the electoral process for now, both countries however said there are disturbing indications that the collation process—here the votes are finally counted—may be subject to deliberate political interference.

According to a joint press statement signed by U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and U.K. foreign Secretary Philip Hammond‎ said any interference contravenes the letter and spirit of the Abuja Accord, to which both major parties committed themselves.

The statement reads; “Our governments welcome the largely peaceful vote on March 28. The Nigerian people have shown a commendable determination to register their vote and choose their leaders.
“So far, we have seen no evidence of systemic manipulation of the process. But there are disturbing indications that the collation process—where the votes are finally counted—may be subject to deliberate political interference.

This would contravene the letter and spirit of the Abuja Accord, to which both major parties committed themselves.

“The Governments of the United States and the United Kingdom would be very concerned by any attempts to undermine the independence of the Electoral Commission (INEC), or its Chairman, Professor Jega; or in any way distort the expressed will of the Nigerian people.”
