Kano community gets solar borehole, electric tricycles

Women Farmers Advancement Network (WOFAN) has given relief to Dumaji in Garun Malam in Kano State to mark World Food Day and International Day of Rural Women.

The reliefs are solar-powered borehole, women’s processing centre, solar-powered marketing hub, and electric vehicles, particularly for women and people with disabilities.

The solar-powered borehole, designed to serve the school, mosque, and others, will solve Dumaji’s water scarcity, improving health and hygiene.

This highlights WOFAN’s commitment to uplifting rural communities and foster sustainable development.

At the unveiling, Executive Director, Dr. Salamatu Garba, noted the empowerment these projects bring to Dumaji, especially through WOFAN’s ICON2 Project, with Mastercard Foundation.

She said the borehole, which reaches 13 points in Dumaji and neighbouring areas, will benefit three million people.

“The people are farmers and entrepreneurs, which is why we chose them to kickstart our activities for World Food Day and International Day of Rural Women,” Garba said.

In addition, 24 agro-tricycle loaders were distributed to farmers to ease transportation challenges.

The processing centre, with solar-powered dryer and processing machines, will reduce post-harvest losses and improve food security.

Firms launch initiative to deploy 10,000 electric tricycles

To transform the nation’s transportation sector, KarryGo Transport Technology Company, Qoray Mobility, and the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) have signed a partnership agreement to deploy 10,000 units of Qoray Teak electric tricycles within the next 12 months.

The deal, executed in Abuja, aims to reduce fossil fuel reliance, lower carbon emissions, and provide a sustainable, clean, and safer last-mile transportation solution for millions of Nigerians.

This initiative aligns with the Federal Government’s energy transition plan and emphasises the importance of energy security and clean mobility in supporting Nigeria’s economic growth.

The project will feature advanced charging and battery-swap infrastructure, along with seamless payment solutions, enhancing convenience and efficiency for transport operators and passengers. Financed by The Alternative Bank, this project represents a commitment to innovative and practical solutions that foster positive environmental and economic change.

The bank’s involvement highlights the viability and potential impact of electric mobility in reshaping Nigeria’s transport landscape for a greener future. Damola Akindolire, Co-founder of KarryGo Transport Technology Company, remarked that the transport sector is vital to Nigeria’s economy, noting that the rising cost of petrol has severely impacted its operations.

“Our partnership with RTEAN, which controls over 70% of the transport sector, marks the start of a significant energy transition and the introduction of advanced mobility technology for Nigeria’s transport sector,” he stated. KarryGo’s CTO and Co-founder, Ayomide Daniels, emphasized the importance of mobility technology infrastructure.m He noted that KarryGo is leveraging blockchain, clean energy, and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies to build and deploy systems that facilitate secure, efficient movement of people and goods across Nigeria.

These technologies also provide valuable data to government agencies, helping to improve the sector’s efficiency and security. Alhaji Musa Maitakobi, President of RTEAN, highlighted the partnership’s alignment with RTEAN’s vision to improve members’ welfare, reduce costs, and support government clean energy initiatives.

“This collaboration introduces a sustainable mobility solution that integrates electric vehicles, charging stations, and payment systems, repositioning Nigeria’s transportation system for significant social, environmental, and economic benefits,” Maitakobi stated. Olabanjo Alimi, Managing Director of Qoray Mobility, expressed enthusiasm for deploying a comprehensive ecosystem of electric vehicles, infrastructure, and services in Nigeria.

“This partnership reinforces our commitment to expanding the footprint of electric vehicles and infrastructure in Africa, driving social impact and efficiency,” he said. KarryGo, launched in April 2023 in partnership with RTEAN, is a blockchain-based mobility application that offers cashless payment options, including scan-to-pay and USSD methods for customers nationwide. Qoray Mobility, an electric mobility company, focuses on delivering cleaner and sustainable transportation solutions across Africa.

It offers electric vehicles, charging infrastructure, and financing options to promote a shift from combustion engines to green transportation. RTEAN, a leading transport association in Nigeria, represents the interests of transport operators and continues to play a critical role in the sector’s development and modernization.
