  • ‘Emmanuel, Akpabio, Ekere should embrace peace’

    A coalition of Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), Network Advancement Programme for Poverty and Disaster Risks Reduction (NAPPDRR), has urged winners and losers in the just concluded elections to embrace peace.

    President of NAPPDRR Al Mustapher Edoho praised the peaceful exercise and urged politicians to be in the vanguard of maintaining peace.

    He said: “My organisation was one of the independent observers which monitored the elections in parts of Akwa Ibom, and I can say the exercise was generally peaceful.

    “Elections anywhere in the world can never be completely free of malpractices. We hail the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Dr. Mike Igini, for conducting the most credible elections in Akwa Ibom since the return to democracy in 1999. We thus urge the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Nnsima Ekere, to accept defeat.

    “The NGO congratulates the governor and urge him to be magnanimous in victory, by extending his hand of fellowship to Senator Godswill Akpabio, Ekere and other opposition leaders, for peace and development.”

  • 2019: Youths urged to embrace peace

    Youths have been enjoined to conduct themselves peacefully before, during and after the 2019 general elections, to ensure the smooth running and success of the society. This was the submission of Bola Olabisi, the director-general of the 2019 Lagos Mega Youth Festival, at a press conference in Lagos during the week.

    According to Olabisi, Lagos Mega Youth Festival is part of activities to celebrate the birthday of the national leader of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

    In his words: “We are using this medium to plead with youths across the country to conduct themselves in a peaceful manner before, during and after the 2019 elections. This is to ensure peaceful elections and a peaceful country for all.”

    Speaking on the festival, Olabisi, who doubles as Lagos West divisional coordinator, said, “We are making youths in Lagos State proud with this programme. We use this to celebrate Asiwaju for all his efforts in bettering Nigerian politics. We also use this platform to show our solidarity for the Lagos State governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

    “The Asiwaju Mega Initiative is a non-governmental organization aimed at eternalising the African living legend, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, through purposeful, resourceful talent discoveries and competitive programmes meant to imbibe the spirit, culture and ideology of Asiwaju in our generation.” The festival will comprise events such as the Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu Mathematics Competition and Games Competition. Others are the Party Man Quiz Competition and the Miss Mogaji Eko Beauty Pageant.

     

     

  • Cleric: embrace peace

    Prophet Sam Olu Alo of the Christ Apostolic Church, Grace of Mercy Prayer Mountain, has called on politicians and the electorate to shun politics of bitterness.

    According to him, politicians and their supporters must show love to one another for the sake of unity and national integration.

    To this end, the church, in conjunction with Adamimogo outreach, will be organising the 2019 edition of her prayer crusade, with the theme: Mercy Once Again (Great Mercy Numbers 14 vs 18-19).

    Special prayers will be offered for Nigeria ahead of the election, starting from Ondo, Ekiti, Oyo, Osun, Ogun and Lagos State, as well as Abuja. The crusade, which starts in Akure, will be held between January 12 and 20 at the Democracy Park, Oja Oba, at 4 pm daily

    The morning session holds 5 am daily at the church auditorium around Orange FM, Irese road, Shagari village, Akure.

    “As 2019 political activities gather momentum, we appeal to politicians seeking to eschew hatred and bitterness, and promote promote peace, love and unity.

    “We would have a successful election in 2019, but our leaders and the led must love one another, conduct ourselves peacefully and do away with those things that cause division among us…’’

    “We also need to move closer to God and run away from sin. It is necessary that we seek God’s mind concerning the election and the country. God has better plans for us as a country this year; all we need do is to put everything in His care, ask for mercy once again, seek love and love one another.”

     

     

  • Enugu APC urged to embrace peace

    A group, Youth Coalition for Peace and Good Governance, based in Enugu State has urged the All Progressives Congress (APC) to end its internal strife in order to win the coming election.

    The coordinator of the group, Hon. Ikechukwu Onyema said it was unfortunate  that the state APC is facing challenges that are detrimental to its success in next year’s election. He said: “We are concerned about the ugly shape of this internal fracas between Deacon Okey Ogbodo faction, which has Mr. George Tagbo Ogara as its governorship candidate and Mr. Ben Nwoye faction that is backing Senator Ayogu Eze as its candidate. “We are also perturbed by the inherent consequences of their utterances on the existing peace in Enugu State vis-à-vis the forthcoming general election in 2019.”

    Onyema added that  the crisis became pronounced when the parties confronted themselves at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu. “Our group, just like the overwhelming majority of the people of Enugu State, were equally worried that this disgraceful act of the APC factions was also heavily felt during the state party congress to elect its governorship candidate, which was marred by intense violence and is currently under litigation with regards to the authentic governorship candidate of the party.

    “The truth remains that the APC in Enugu State should not disrupt the peace the good people of Enugu State have been enjoying, embrace reconciliation and desist from overheating the polity for selfish reasons. “As we go into electioneering proper, the Enugu Youth Coalition for Peace and Good Governance would be glad to see the two factions of the APC embrace each other to maintain the tempo of peace, security and good governance in the state, in order to guarantee peaceful, free, fair and credible general election in 2019, which we passionately stand for,” he said.

  • Sultan, Sanusi, Ooni, others: embrace peace

    Traditional rulers yesterday urged politicians to promote peace, unity and harmony in the country.

    Speaking in separate messages to mark the Muslim celebration of Eid el Kabir,

    The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, The Ooni of Ife Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, Emir of Kano Muhammad Sanusi, Emir of zauzau Dr. Shehu Idris, Emir of Ilorin and Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, Etsu Nupe Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar in separate messages to mark the Muslim celebration of Eid el Kabir, sounded a not of cautuion.

    They also enjoined Nigerians to use their Permanent Voter Cards (PVC) to vote their choice candidates in next year’s elections.

    The Sultan said: “Nigeria is above all of us; peace and unity of the country should always remain our priority, all our political parties should always consider Nigeria first,’’ he said.

    He also advised the youths not to allow any politicians to use them for selfish purposes.

    The Sultan called on all eligible Nigerians to ensure they have the permanent voter cards to enable them vote for candidates of their choice.

    The President General of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) said: ý”I urge you to obtain your PVCs. Without which you cannot not vote for your favourite party and candidates in the forthcoming elections in 2019.

    “We should see our PVCs as religious weapons not the kind of weapons given to our youths by unscrupulous politicians to cause mayhem in our societies.

    “If you love Buhari, the only way you can ensure his success is obtaining your PVCs and same thing with Governor (Aminu) Tambuwal and other aspirants,” he said

    Emir of Kano Sanusi II called on Nigerians to continue to live in peace with one another so as to foster peace, love and unity in the country.

    He spoke after he led the Eid prayer at the Kofar Mata Central Eid ground in Kano metropolis.

    He stressed the need for all Nigerians irrespective of their political and religious inclination to promote peaceful co-existence to ensure economic growth and development in the country.

    The monarch also called on wealthy individuals to support the less-privileged in the society to alleviate their sufferings.

    He said there was need for the people of the state to continue to pray for peace and progress of the state in particular and the country at large as the 2019 general elections draw nearer.

    While praying for bumper harvest in the state and the country, the monarch charged unemployed youths to engage in useful and meaningful ventures to enable them become self-reliant and contribute to the development of the country.

    He charged the people of the state to ensure that they obtain voter cards to enable them exercise their civic responsibility during the forthcoming general elections.

    The Emir of Zazzu who spoke at his palace in Zaria, Kaduna State, said:

    “I want to call on parents to redouble efforts towards providing Islamic and western education to their children and also ensure their proper upbringing to build a brighter future.

    “We must collectively monitor their activities in order to guide them against all sorts of social vices so that they can grow as better citizens and good future leaders.

    “I want to use this medium to appreciate the present administrations in Kaduna State and Nigeria over the successes recorded in the past few years.”

    He called on the people to support government policies and programmes, especially those meant to change their lives for the better.

    Ooni Ogunwusi advised Nigerian politicians and party supporters to refrain from promoting  violence.

    He gave the advice at the Eid Praying Ground at Ilode, Ile-Ife.

    The monarch said that there was no gain in violence, adding that the nobody’s blood ought to be shed on account of elections.

    He appealed to the youths to be conscious of their future and shun politicians who use them for violence at the detriment of their future.

    He sued for peace and admonished all Nigerians  to jointly work for the development and progress of the country.

    The Emir of Ilorin called on Nigerians to uphold the significance of Eid-el Kabir, such as total trust and obedience to God, to accelerate the pace of economic recovery.

    The monarch charged Muslims to sustain the relative peace and harmony the state is known for at all times and be security conscious at all times.

    The Etsu  Nupe urged district heads and stakeholders to mobilise their subjects to get their PVCs

    The Chairman, Niger State Council of Chiefs, said “The PVC is a very potent weapon to either vote in or vote out any candidate seeking to occupy any elective office.

    “Without it, one would not be able to exercise due constitutional responsibility of casting vote in the nation’s electoral process’’, he said.

    The monarch urged those who had not registered to take advantage of the extension to go and register before the Aug. 31 deadline.

    The Etsu also advised his subjects to be law abiding, respect constituted authorities and live in peace, irrespective of ethnic, religious and political affiliations.

    He urged the people and other Nigerians to pray and support government at all levels.

    Abubakar appealed to Nigerians to shun all acts capable of breaching peace and unity, adding that such acts would setback the progress of the country.

    “Peace is the veritable tool for national development and without it no nation can achieve progress.

    “We should therefore as patriotic citizens continue to uphold the noble virtues of peace, unity and love for one another, irrespective of religion, ethnic or political affiliations’’, he said

  • Embrace peace, love, unity, says Lagos APC women leader

    Lagos State Women Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Olajumoke Okoya-Thomas, has urged Muslims to embrace peace, love and unity, “in order to build the society of our dream.”

    In a statement she made available to reporters as Muslims celebrated this year’s Eid-El-Kabir,

    Okoya-Thomas said: “It is a thing of joy for all of us to be alive to celebrate another Sallah in good health.

    “My warmest wishes to you on this solemn festival of Eid-El-Kabir. May the blessing of Allah fill your lives with peace, joy and good health.

    “We, the women of our great party, the APC, are happy that Nigerian Muslims are joining numerous other Muslims from across the world to celebrate another Eid-el-Kabir.

    “This is an annual event that brings to mind how Allah replaced Ismail with a ram for Prophet Ibrahim. May He replace your sorrow with joy and your few with abundance.

    “As we are celebrating another Eid-El-Kabir, we should remember that Prophet Mohammed (SAW) stood for peace, love and unity in his life. Nigerian Muslims and indeed all Nigerians should realise the need for us to learn to live together as one and embrace tolerance as a people.

    “While we are not unmindful of our challenges as a nation, we should realise that there is always light at the end of the tunnel and that we can do better than we are currently doing. We should not over celebrate, bearing in mind that we have a lot on our hands as a nation.

    Bello urges farmers, herdsmen to embrace peace

    Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello has urged the people to embrace dialogue and understanding to live peacefully with one another.

    Governor Bello, who spoke in Lokoja yesterday at a security summit for stakeholders, maintained that through dialogue, the government and its citizens can achieve goals.

    He warned that the use of foul language should be avoided as it can cause more harm.

    “I am appealing to the people, irrespective of their tribe and religion, to tolerate one another to live a peaceful life where businesses will thrive. If the government gets it right, the glory will go to the people.”

    Special Adviser to the governor on security, Navy Commander Jerry Omadara (rtd) described the summit as another opportunity for the state to chart a way forward in sustaining the peace.

    Omadara urged Fulani residens to check themselves and fish out bad eggs among them.

    He added that without peace, there can never be robust economic growth.

    The governor’s Chief of Staff, Mr. Edward Onoja, who presented the framework for security resolution, noted that there must be a paradigm shift in the way and manner people handle security.

    Onoja stressed the need to always dialogue to safeguard human life, lamenting that  loss of lives due to herdsmen and farmers’ clashes is not healthy for the country.

    The National Organising Secretary of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders, Aliu Saleh, assured the governor that the leadership of the Fulani will ensure they live and do their business in harmony with their hosts.

    Saleh urged the government to establish peace committees in the 21 councils to tackle issues.

    Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) Bishop John Ibenu urged the government to compensate land owners, whose land may be taken for the proposed cattle ranches.

    Warring factions of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in Oshodi yesterday buried their hatchets and embraced peace.

    Crisis started after the killing of Motorcycle Operators Association of Lagos (MOALS) Oshodi chapter chairman, Rasak Bello aka Hamburger during the All Progressives Congress’ (APC) primaries for councillors in Sogunle near Oshodi, Lagos.

    MOALS is affiliated to NURTW.

    Yesterday’s peace parley was a followed up to the one organised by NURTW Lagos State Council Chairman Tajudeen Agbede last Thursday.

    Parties loyal to Adedigba Adepegba a.k.a Taloskibo, who were aggrieved over Hamburger’s death and Musiliu Akinsanya alias MC Oluomo, the NURTW leader in Oshodi and State Council Treasurer, filled the White House auditorium, venue of the meeting.

    Heavily armed security personnel were on ground to quell outbreak of violence.

    Oshodi-Isolo Local Government Sole Administrator Taoheed Adebayo Taiwo led the party leader Alhaji Olamide Kasali and other council officials to the gathering.

    Chairman, Lagos State Environmental Sanitation and Special Offences Unit (Task Force) Saheed Olayinka Egbeyemi, a Superintendent of Police (SP) also joined the meeting.

    Taiwo, in his opening remark, said the significance of the gathering was to ensure peaceful atmosphere in Oshodi.

    The council boss said there cannot be progress in a crisis-prone society.

    He warned them not to discourage Governor Akinwunmi Ambode from bring in developmental projects to the area.

    “The governor just secured the nod of the Federal Government to rehabilitate Oshodi-Airport road. There is also ongoing project in the heart of the Oshodi done by the governor. For us to continue to benefit from the governor’s gesture, we need peace in our area,” he said.

    The Sole Administrator thanked MC Oluomo and Taloskibo for sheathing their sword and embrace peace, saying “what happened in Oshodi is unfortunate and we pray never to witness such again. If we don’t fight, the resources available are enough to go round.”

    Egbeyemi warned warring factions that Ambode’s administration has zero-tolerance for violence.

    “We need to thank the governor for his foresight in relocating task force to Oshodi few months before the fracas, hence the casualties would have been more. Let us embrace peace. The governor abhors violence in any form and would all he could to bring perpetrators of violence to book,” the task force boss said.

    Taloskibo declared that he’s not at war with anybody again.

    He said: “I am not fighting again. Those of you who said I should continue to fight on and that you will fight me if I stopped fighting MC Oluomo, I am sorry to disappoint you. I don’t care. I grew up with those we are fighting and it is better to have friend in the house than enemy outside. Our state leader Agbede has settled our rift. There is no war again in Oshodi. But if you know that you wrestle me and MC Oluomo, you may face us; I can assure you that you would be fighting government. As for me, I am for peace and progress of Oshodi.”

    MC Oluomo thanked everybody for attending the parley.

    He debunked all the allegations levelled against him, adding “I never ask anybody to cause trouble not to talk of taking another person’s life. I detest violence. Let God judge me if I lie. I am for the progress of Oshodi and Lagos and nothing would stop me from championing the course of development for our area. Let us all forget what has happened and move on in peace.”

    Oil communities urged to embrace peace

    Bayelsa State government has urged oil-bearing communities to embrace peace and work with it to attract development.
    Special Adviser to Governor Seriake Dickson on oil and gas Mr. Felix Bonny Ayah gave the advice in Yenagoa while addressing reporters at a peace meeting.
    News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the meeting was brokered between Shell and Kolo Creek Cluster Development Board (CDB).
    It also reports that the acting monarch of Otuasega, Chief Claudius Enegesi, attended the meeting at the Ministry of Mineral Resources, Yenagoa.
    Ayah identified peace as panacea for development, saying no growth could thrive in an atmosphere of rancour and acrimony.
    He advised aggrieved parties to use dialogue to settle differences.
    Mrs. Kenu Walson, a permanent secretary in the ministry, who presided over the meeting, urged parties to make concessions.
    Chairman Kolo Creek Cluster Development Board (CDB) Mr. Okpu Solomon enjoined the government to follow due process in resolving the crisis.
    He advised the government to see the report of the dispute resolution committee as the only mechanism to resolve the impasse.

    Embrace peace now, Army tells insurgents

    THE military yesterday served members of the dreaded Boko Haram sect a notice to surrender, failing which they will be risking grave consequences.

    Besides, the Army also urged the international community to tell the insurgents to embrace peace and desist from terrorist acts.

    The Army spoke through a statement titled: “Final warning to Boko Haram terrorists.” It was signed by its spokesman, Col Sani Usman.

    He said troops operating under the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) have uncovered all the sect’s hideouts, adding that they must either surrender or face serious consequences.

    It reads: “This is to finally warn all Boko Haram terrorists wherever they are, to desist from all acts of terrorism, surrender themselves and face the law now.

    “We wish to inform them that we are aware of all their hideouts, camps and enclaves. They should follow their colleagues who have so far surrendered.

    “Failure to surrender will result in serious consequences as our troops have closed up with them.

    “We equally appeal to members of the international community and the world at large, to kindly persuade Boko Haram terrorists and their international collaborators to desist from acts of terrorism and renounce their membership of the terrorist organization forthwith.

    “They should also immediately and unconditionally release all abducted persons in their custody including the Chibok schoolgirls.”
