The winners emerged at a raffle draw. They emerged through the lucky dip by store representatives of Etisalat and Foschini. The winners were told via telephone calls to show up the following day at the mall for their prizes. Afterwards, they were taken through the promo process to ensure clarity. Each of them were given 60 seconds to dash into their choice store and pick any item not more than N10,000.

The lucky winners were Mrs. Olayinka Onatola, Janet Orekoya, Ben Tobilade, Yusuph Abdulrahman, Omeka Victoria, Ope, and Toyosi Kuti.

Othere were Michael Okafor, Femi Aiyegbusi and Olayide Shiyanbade.

The winners  shared their experiences with  The Nation Shopping. Onatola said she grudgingly acceded to her daughter’s request to participate in the promo, bought a phone from Samsung and submitted her receipt. She was sceptical about the promo, but due to her daughter’s persistence, she finally gave in and when it was time to redeem her prize, she bought toys worth N10, 000 from the Lego shop for her daughter.

On her part, Orekoya gave an intriguing story of how she participated in the promo, saying that earlier in the month, she came into the mall to shop at Da Viva, a clothing retailer, but the store had not opened for business so, she bought from Truworths instead. After emerging as one of the lucky winners, Orekoya said she decided to visit Da Viva store again, but this time with her free shopping voucher.

To enter for the promo, shoppers who spent N10, 000 or above in any of the stores were directed by Brand Ambassadors to drop their receipts in the boxes designated at the three entrances to the mall. Collation of receipts started onMay 19 and ended nine days later.

  • 92 winners emerge at LAGOS HOMS draw

Ninety-two winners emerged yesterday at the fourth public draw of the Lagos Home Ownership Mortgage Scheme (Lagos HOMS) held at the Blue Roof Hall of LTV8 in Agidingbi, Ikeja.

A Federal Government worker in Lagos State, Okunola Olabisi, could not hide her joy when her name was called as one of the winners.

Olabisi, who won a three-bedroom flat at Hon. Olaitan Mustapha Estate in Ifako Ijaiye, said it was a dream come true for her.

She said she tried for many years to secure a similar home under the federal scheme to no avail, adding that she could not believe how easy and transparent Lagos HOMS is.

Olabisi said: “My sister has been helping me out with the federal scheme, but we did not get it. When I heard about Fashola’s housing scheme, I decided to give it a try and here I am today a winner. I cannot express my joy. I am so happy. I thank the governor for this.”

Mrs. Animola Yemisi, who won a home at the Illupeju Scheme, said 33 people applied for the scheme, adding that she was among the 13 winners.

She said: “As I sat down there, I was praying in my heart when I heard that 33 of us applied for the scheme and only 13 will be given. You can imagine how I jumped up when my name was called out as number 10 winner.”

Other winners include Alhaja Adeotun Mustapha; Mr. Adeyemi Olayinka; Miss Adighogu Adaugo; Mrs. Alabi Shakirat; Mr. Anyanwu Akubeze; Mrs. Bolarinwa Mojisola; Mr. Falomo Oluwatosin; Mr. Ifeyemi Moshood; Mrs. Ifekoya Queen-Anne; Mr. Obi Nkechukwuyenum; Ms. Olaniyan Bosede; Mr. Sanyaolu Abiodun and Mr. Sofoluwe Olufemi.

Governor Babatunde Fashola said he was happy to see the joyful faces of the winners.

He said the government had released about N2 billion to mobilise fresh contractors to new estate sites.

Fashola said: “I saw a lot of happy faces today, so my day is made. This job has meaning for me only if I can make somebody happy. So for the 31 successful winners in the first month, 36 in the second, 76 in the third and today 92, I am a happy man. I am sure those who worked with me are happy too.”

He praised contractors handling Lagos HOMS projects, urging them to improve on speed without compromising safety and quality.

The governor reiterated his call for the introduction of shifts at construction sites, adding that workers can do two shifts of eight hours each at intervals to reduce construction time.

Fashola said people who work and live in Lagos can legitimately aspire to have their own homes, adding that a significant number of the home owners were young.

He said: “There are many young people, some middle-age persons and a few elderly ones among the winners. Interestingly, there are many women. There are Christians and Muslims. There are people from diverse backgrounds in Nigeria. Do you know what binds them together? Their Lagos residency and the fact that the government that they pay taxes to responds by providing services to them.”

Fashola said the scheme affirms that something made by Nigerians can work effectively without interference, adding: “I am happy but you know what that means. It means democracy can work. It means that if we dare to dream, everything will succeed. When we started, there were just 31. We are not where we ought to be but month after month, we have increased that number. That is the way a nation and people develop, gradually and steadily, and maybe that is why I am in the camp of the progressives.

“We will honestly commit with you, irrespective of how far the distance is and we will commit also to run every mile of that distance with the same candour, spirit and belief that we will get to the end. That is the spirit I urge our people to share and continue with in difficult times, because only determined people survive difficult times.”

He said he hoped that some of the winners voted during the last elections and that if they did not, they will vote during the next elections.

Fashola said: “I hope they will see the difference between a committed government and a government that does not care. I hope that on the Election Day, they will not be too tired to go and cast their votes, especially for those who did not vote. We may never have witnessed this day, if some people had not voted for me.”

Executive Director of the Lagos Mortgage Board Bayowa Forsythe said 222 people applied at seven schemes, adding that 176 people qualified and 46 applications were declined.

  • More modern markets emerge

    More modern markets emerge

Shopping malls have come to stay in the country. More malls are daily springing up across the major cities and towns of the country.  Anambra State’s commercial cities of Onitsha, Nnewi and Awka are hosting new shopping malls,  TONIA ‘DIYAN and Odogwu Emeka Odogwu report.

The past few years have seen the rise of modern shopping malls in Nigeria with Shoprite setting the pace. It is just a natural progression from what has always been a way of life for an average Nigerian who is known to be a great spender.

Since the first shopping mall, The Palms,Lekki-Lagos landed in the country in 2005, the number of shopping malls have continuously been on the increase. Cities, such as  Ibadan, Ilorin, Abuja, Enugu and now Onitsha, Nnewi and Akwa can boast of modern shopping facilities that have brought  tremendous transformation in the way people now shop.

The potential buying power of Nigerians has been recognised by the outside world. Foreign firms have now realised that there is a lot of wealth in the country and had seen the neccessity to build modern  markets, despite the existence of challenges such as dearth of infrastructure and access to land. According to experts, the availability of suitable land for siting shopping mall continues to be a challenge as the appropriate location remained an issue.

Former Chief Executive Officer, Broll Nigeria, Erejuwa Gbadebo, said the financial institutions must support projects such as shopping malls with finance.

According to her, shopping mall projects create jobs and leads to the rejuvenation of the micro economy around places where they are sited.

    The new shopping malls

Global leader in retailing business, Shoprite is set to open more retail malls in major cities in Anambra State. It will start from Onitsha, then move to Awka and Nnewi.

While that of Onitsha has attained 75 per cent completion, that of Awka and Nnewi are at various stages of completion. The Awka mall is located at the site of the old Ikenga Hotel in Awka, the state capital.

Governor Peter Obi is happy about the projects. This is because the malls will provide alternative shopping avenues for expatriates and other prominent Nigerians that will lodge in the three international hotels and resorts as well as the convention centres he is building in the three cities.

At the moment, Shoprite is the favourite and would be charged with the responsibility of supervising other tenants but other big names in shopping mall business have also indicated interest in opening branches in Onitsha, Nnewi and Awka especially now that Obi has provided a level playing field for all players.

The Onitsha Mall is located at the side of the Onitsha Hotel and Convention Centre. It is situated on a vast land that boasts enough space for the level of commercial activities the mall will expectedly host.

The governor promised to provide facilities to boost activities in the area, including dualisation of Park Road, the access road to the complex which he has done.

From the foundation laying structures on ground, it is clear that the shopping malls are big and ultra-modern. The state is constructing the malls in partnership with African Capital Alliance under Private-Public Partnership (PPP).

Obi said it is in line with his commitment to the transformation of Anambra State, which, according to him, included returning Onitsha to its past glory as the number one commercial city in Nigeria that wil host the biggest market in West Africa.

    Financing the projects

The Attorney-General of the State, Peter Afuba said Governor Obi has put in a lot on the project, to be financed jointly by African Capital Alliance and Anambra State Government through Private Public Partnership (PPP).  He explained that after the construction, Shoprite would serve as anchor for tenants.

A Senior Manager with African Capital Alliance, Mr Osita Okonkwo said the project would cost over $30 million, with 15,000 sq. meter of shopping and retail spaces.  He said the money was coming from  international financial institution as foreign direct investment (FDI) and that it was not possible to  attract such money to Anambra State before Governor Obi.

He added that it is now possible for the state to attract FDI now  because of the enthronement of stability and good governance which have been made possible by the governor.

He recalled how Obi visited Shelter Afrique in Kenya, when he was and how he showed passion for the growth and development of the state.

Obi said:  ”Many big organisations wanted to hold their Annual General Meetings (AGMs) in Awka. They want to hold it in Onitsha, the largest and biggest market in Africa or Nnewi, the Japan of Africa but were deterred by the absence of befitting hotels and convention centres. Now, history is being made as we put these facilities in place.”

Also, on the finance to complete the shopping malls as the tenure of his administration is about to lapse, he said the government had saved enough money to see the projects through to completion.

Obi said: “We have conceived them (the projects) since and saved enough money to see them through. Just watch and see what will happen. Not just these two, we are starting the Governor’s Lodge, legislative and judiciary buildings in few days. We have the resources to execute them. We have the resources to aggressively execute and complete the many projects, including road projects we are working on.

“It is my belief that a governor should work for his people unceasingly.  Many people wonder why I keep working and flagging-off projects even when I am supposed to be winding up, but I believe a governor should work for his people in season and out of season.  I shall continue to work till I handover, especially to make things easier for my successor.”

Already, the state government will expand parts of Awka road, and further widen the access road to Onitsha International Shopping Mall in addition to the ongoing dualisation of the Park Road, GRA.

There would be an Amusement Park built in the area in line with on-going upgrading of infrastructure in Onitsha and environs.

    Shoprite plans

A representative of the Shoprite Group, Mr Gerald Frits, said when functional, the mall will reduce the cost of goods as they would be working with local farmers in the state. Mr. Frits said the facility would also provide a lot of employment opportunities and commended the vision of Governor Obi in attracting high class investments to the state.

Obi warned contractors working on projects in the state, especially on the shopping malls, to sit up and face their jobs squarely or face severe sanctions.

”My government does not owe any contractor. We have enough money for our projects and only demand from contractors to be fast, with assurances that any certificate generated would be paid for. But for those who are not serious for reasons only themselves know, we will not hesitate to revoke their contracts,”Obi said.

These three shopping malls will add a difference to the lives of the super rich and middle class who once in a while travel out of the state to do their shopping as well as visitors to the state.

New leaders‘ll emerge soon, says Tinubu

A National leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, yesterday predicted the emergence of new leaders in Nigeria.

The former Lagos State governor urged Nigerians to pray fervently that “the predictions of doom, hardship, political instability and religious intolerance will not come to fruition”.

Tinubu, who is recuperating from a successful surgery, in his Sallah message released by his Media Office, wished all Muslims Eid mubarak and happy Sallah celebrations.

Tinubu urged Muslims not to stop praying and fasting for Nigeria because Ramadan is over. He warned that “danger lies ahead for Nigeria”.

“As our country continues its search for an equilibrium-politically, economically and in terms of religious harmony – men of God and their followers must never stop to offer prayers. The Ramadan period was another opportunity for Muslims to pay penitence, but most importantly, pray for the peace and progress of Nigeria. Nigeria needs prayers but also good leaders.”

Tinubu urged Nigerians “to work for the good of the nation and prayed that very soon, leaders with vision, vigour and vibrant capacity will be voted into office to lead Nigeria onto the right path”. Nigeria, he says, “is not a broken case. It is redeemable and only the people can make this change happen by voting right and wisely”.
