  • Alert! Fake muslim group emerges

    Preamble

Today’s article is starting with apology to the readers of ‘The Message’ for the inability of their beloved column to float on this page last Friday. It was due to a fortuitous failure of technology which yours sincerely was unable to prevent.

    About Ramadan

Ordinarily, if ‘The Message’ had been out in this column last Friday, it would have been about the divine month that seasonally comes into the world to serve as the month of all months and the global guest of all seasons.

Regrettably however, today’s article is still not about Ramadan and that is due to a development, last week, that called for and deserves an urgent attention in this column today. A whole month is ahead of us, commencing from next week, in which we can address Ramadan from all conceivable angles. We pray the Almighty Allah to spare our lives.

    ‘Opium of the People’

In spite of the quoted maxim (by an American poet) at the opening of this article, there doesn’t seem to be an end in sight for religious acrimony and malice in the Southwest of Nigeria.

The battle for peoples’ souls in the name of God continues to rage unabatedly between the Christians and the Muslims in the region albeit on a disguised platter of materialism. It is difficult to pinpoint with certainty, a dominant colour in a rainbow. The eyes that saw clearly in the dark yesterday may become dim in sighting an object through a bright light today. Thus, in a world where religion has virtually become Karl Marx’  “opium of the people”, it may be difficult to prove that the rampant, deafening noises over religion in contemporary Nigeria is more about obedience to God than loyalty to material wealth. Otherwise, why is a choice of the path to Paradise or to Hell not left to the liberty of every individual without any interference? If genuinely embraced, religion should be a matter of conscience which no mortal being should endeavour to Judge upon. But the contrary is the case in Nigeria. And the real problem area is the Southwest region where no business thrives better than religion. It is quite evident that the foremost industry in the Southwest of Nigeria today is a religious solo with different choruses.

    Strange ‘Muslim’ Group

Last week, the attention of ‘The Message’  column was drawn to a media altercation between a famous Non-Governmental Organization called Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) and  a fake group named ‘Oodua Muslim Coalition’ (OMC).

The Director of MURIC is Ishaq Lakin Akintola a Professor of Islamic Eschatology at the Lagos State University (LASU), whose versatility in the propagation of Islam through  human rights advocacy is  well known nationally and inyernationally.

    Oodua Muslim Coaliition’

The so-called Oodua Muslim Coalition (OMC), on the other hand, is so obscure and so fraudulent that no Muslim of note will want to associate with it because of its vague antecedent. Its name alone is

    questionable.

To which Oodua is the amorphous group claiming to be related or affiliated? Is it Oodua, the acclaimed primogenitor of the entire Yoruba tribe who was never related to Islam in any way or Oodua People’s Congress (OPC), which lays no claim to any religion?

    The Mission of OPC

To the best knowledge of all Yoruba sons and daughters all over the world, OPC is a trbal youth pressure group in Yoruba land, just like Egbesu of Ijaw tribe, or Massop or IPOB in Igbo land or ACF in the north. And, like those of others, OPC has  no religious inclination in its agenda. It is rather a conglomeration of all comers in Yoruba land irrespective of religious convictions or dialects. If religion has truly crept into OPC, then Christian counterpart of OMC would have emerged. And that would have signaled an albatross for Yoruba as a

    distinct tribal entity.

The fact that some people choose to be Christians while others choose to be Muslims does not confer superiority on some people as an instrument of oppression over others.

The faceless elements behind the so-called OMC must have lost any memory of the possible consequences of their fraudulent plot to use Islam as an instrument of balkanization of the Yoruba land along religious lines. Such is often the case with shallow-minded people whose only focus is the momentary crump they would pick under the dining tables of their masters.

    The Press Conspiracy

Using the Southwest media to baptize the arrival of its clandestine but nefarious plot under the cover of Islamic religion, this amorphous group recently issued a hateful press statement in which it attacked and blackmailed the entire Southwest Muslims calling them names and labeling them  ‘Agents of Hausa Fulani of the North’.

Unfortunately the same Southwest media has never seen the association of the Southwest people with those of the Southeast and South-south in their joint campaign for secession from the commonwealth of Nigeria in the same vein.  OMC’s press statement which was aimed at attack Professor Lakin Akintola of MURIC was foolishly turned into a general tool with which to throw away Islam’s baby with the bathwater in the Southwest.

Even the duo of one Mallam Lateef Adeyera and an Alhaji Ambali Olubodun Noibi who sheepishly but mischievously signed the obnoxious statement as Chairman and Secretary General respectively could not delineate between the sensible and the insensible  if only for firming up their flanks of tribal pedigree.

    Clarification

For clarification, the Muslim Ummah of the Southwest which is the umbrella body for all the State Muslim Councils/Communities as well as Organizations in the six State of the Southwest reagion. And, if as the Southern counterpart of Jamatu Nasril Islam (JNI) in the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), which has the record of all legitimate Muslim Organizations in the Southwest, does not know the so-called ‘Oodua Muslim Coalition’ what is the antecedent of that fraudulent group?

It is therefore necessary here to warn all genuine Muslim Councils, Communities and Organizations as well as indiduals in the region to beware of certain evil elements who are now parading themselves as Muslim groups or Associations  with the intent of constituting a spiritual virus in the region, Their objective is to break the ranks of the Ummah in order to subject the Muslims to the manacle of Satan..

    Press Statement

In the press statement that the so-called OMC issued recently, the faceless but highly diabolical group adopted the well known tactic and vulgar language characteristic of certain self-acclaimed Yoruba

    leaders.

These elements and their cohorts are notorious for creating amorphous proxies and using them for their anti-Islamic agenda and other evil machinations. Thus, whenever such proxies raise their heads and attempt to dance like a dragon on the surface of a brook, we should automatically know where the drummers are hiding.

    Evil Agents

The contents and language of the said press statement by the so-called OMC could not have come as a surprise to any genuine Muslim Organization  because it has become a recurrent decimal in from their

    masters.

As a divisive gimmick, in the said press statement, the amorvous group, like those of its senior brothers in their clandestine game, told the Southwest Muslims generally, to stop cooperating with the northern Muslims whom it described as enemies of the Yoruba people. It also went ahead to ask them to drop their Islamic identity for a new toga of Yoruba irredentism of the primitive era.

    Unity as Headache

Apparently disturbed by the progressive unity between the Northern and Southwestern Muslims, under the banner of NSCIA, the YSF proxy calling itself OMC ignorantly insinuated that accepting the leadership of the President General of Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) and Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad

Abubakar, CFR, mni, could not profit the Southwest Muslims. It will be recalled that a similar press statement was issued in November 2015 in which one obvious renegade by the name Yinka Odumakin singled out  the venerable personality of the Executive Secretary of MUSWEN, Professor D. O. S. Noibi, OBE, DSc. FISN for a venomous attack just because the latter signed a MUSWEN press release that objected to Afenifere’s threat of secession bid at that time.

    Putting the Record Straight

Ordinarily, MUSWEN, as a responsible Islamic body with millions of Muslim members, would not have reacted to such frivolities, but when some bread and butter parasites in the society attempt to distort plain facts and replace truth with falsehood, ‘The Message’ as an Islamic column will be left with no choice than to put the records straight.

It is immoral for those who in their actions, utterances and body languages, swallow the Christian doctrine hook, line and sinker to hide under unbridled tribal irredentism   to want to prevent  the Muslims of the Southwest Nigeria from associating with their brothers and sisters in other parts of the country.

    Not a Secular Country

Nigeria is a multi-religious and nor a secular country as often claimed by mischievous elements to suit their evil desire. In a country where all citizens are at liberty to choose and practice their religions, no religious bigots have any right to want to prevent other religious groups from practicing their faith.

    Euphoria of the past

Those who are still basking in the now forgotten euphoria of the colonial era should wake up from their slumber and face the reality of the moment. Nigeria is not the the lad of anybody’s father and nobody can claim ownership of it.

    Language of Communication

English language is no longer anybody’s monopoly and it can no longer be used to bamboozle any group into a new slavery or colonialism as in the past. We are all Nigerians. The meaning of the opening poem in this article should suffice for people who can correctly reason. Islam is not for sale in the Southwest Nigeria. Ramadan Karim in advance!

  • Emefiele emerges ECOWAS Central Banks Governors’ chair

Emefiele emerges ECOWAS Central Banks Governors’ chair

The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) , Godwin Emefiele has been elected chairman of Committee of Central Bank Governors of the ECOWAS sub-region.

Emefiele, who was elected by fellow central bank governors from ECOWAS countries at the 31st meeting of the Committee of Governors of the West African Monetary Zone (WAMZ) in Abuja yesterday,  hinted that the January 1, 2015 date for the commencement of the sub-regions monetary union may not be feasible.

He lamented that “over the years, appraisals have continued to show that the level of macroeconomic convergence in the Zone has remained inadequate relative to the set targets.”

He said since 2009, no two countries satisfied all the four primary convergence criteria consistently for two consecutive years.  “Accordingly, we have missed several launch dates for the monetary union,” he said.

This development he said “may have informed the decision of the Heads of State and Governments to approve the Modified Gradualist Approach to monetary integration by 2020.”

He noted that the performance of Member States’ on the convergence scale, relative to that required for the establishment of a monetary union was still inadequate.

Also member countries’ business cycle synchronisation in terms of real GDP, inflation, broad money and interest rates remained weak, and their level of institutional preparedness for the monetary union remain inadequate, he added.

He then urged other central bank governors, “to objectively examine the numerous challenges before us, assess the state of preparedness of member states for monetary integration at short notice, and realistically appraise the directive of the Heads of States and Governments for a Modified Gradualist Approach to monetary Integration by 2020.”

He said their role “is to honestly appraise this directive and design strategies to ensure a sustainable monetary union in the zone.”

In doing this, Emefiele urged other ECOWAS countries, “to think outside the box, realistically assessing and providing innovative options as well as the costs and benefits of implementing the Modified Gradualist Approach.”

He however said that member countries “have continued to make remarkable progress towards the establishment of a common market and the implementation of the ECOWAS Trade Integration Protocols and Convention as well as significant progress towards the reforms of their financial systems.”

  • New Biafran leadership emerges

A new Biafran leadership emerged, at the weekend, with the Director of Radio Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, at the head.

Scores of Biafran war veterans, who attended the event, vowed that they would not rest  until the republic was invented.

A multi-million naira cenotaph was unveiled in memory of those it called its fallen heroes during the Nigeria/Biafra civil war.

It said its agitation for freedom from Nigeria would continue until the Biafra Republic was invented.

Kanu spoke at Ngwo in Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State, during the maiden commemoration of Biafra Day on May 30, the day the late Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu declared the Republic of Biafra in I967.

Kanu said it was regrettable that despite the declaration of the “No victor, no vanquished” after the civil war in 1970, successive governments including the Goodluck Jonathan administration had marginalised and made life unbearable for the Igbo.

He urged the Igbo across the globe to join the crusade of putting in place the Biafran Republic, adding that it was time the Igbo pulled out of Nigeria, which he described as a failed nation.

Kanu said it was painful that 47 years after the civil war ended, Federal Government had refused to pay soldiers who fought on the side of Biafra their benefits and entitlements, whereas their counterparts in the North and West had been paid.

The Radio Biafra boss said despite the odds, they remained grateful to the late Ojukwu and others who laid down their lives for the struggle.

He warned the Federal Government not to hinder the proposed republic, saying  it should allow the will of God to be done by letting the Igbo go.

Kanu wondered how any right thinking fellow would want to remain in a nation where he or she had no stake or recognition, stressing that the Igbo would soon move from bondage to the promised land where God had prepared for them.

He said 47 years after Ojukwu declared the Republic of Biafra, the reasons that led to his decision were still evident in Nigeria.

Kanu decried the sufferings of Nigerians, following corrupt and bad governance.

He said as long as the intention of the amalgamation of the North and South was designed to cheat the latter, the nation would never move forward, because any country that made injustice its watchword would never prosper.

According to him, no amount of National Conference can solve Nigeria’s problems because the leaders are not sincere and there is deep-rooted hatred among the citizens.

Kanu said the only panacea for Nigeria’s problems was to split it into regions, enjoining the Igbo to embrace and keep faith with Biafra, which he assured would come to reality.

  • Bitflux emerges winner of 2.3GHz spectrum auction

Bitflux emerges winner of 2.3GHz spectrum auction

Arelatively unknown telecoms firm, Bitflux Communications, a member of the BITCOM Group,, defeated owners of second national operator licence, Globacom to emerge winners in the auction conducted to sell one spectrum slot in the 2.3giga hertz (GHz) by the regulator of the telecoms sector, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).

The electronic ‘ascending clock auction’ was held yesterday at the Transcorp Hotel, Abuja. It was witnessed by executive commissioners of the NCC and other stakeholders in the telecoms industry including a representative of the State Security Services (SSS).

By emerging winner of the contest, Bitflux has 14 business days to pay the bid price of $23, 251,000 while it has another 30 days to pay N155 million for Unified Access Service Licence which will allow it to operate as “wholesale wireless broadband services’ provider.

Announcing the winner, Chief Executive Officre, NCC, Dr Eugene Juwah said the process, which was electronically powered, went through two rounds. While the first round which had set $23 million in addition to another 15 per cent which made total to stand at $26.450 million had produced no winner, the machine immediately switched to “tie breakers’ indicating that neither of the two bidders was ready to go above what was put on offer.

According to him, failure to meet the payment schedule will see Glo coasting home with the licence.

The second round produced Bitflux offering $23,251,000 while Globacom offered to pay $23,050,001.

Speaking after being announced the winner, Director, Bitflux Communications, Biodun Omoniyi congratulated the NCC for the open, fair and transparent process and congratulated the big brother, Globacom for being magnanimous even in defeat because, according to him “Nobody can put his head down to fight with the bull.”

He said the result was not expected but noted that the firm drew up its business plan and followed it to the letter, having faith in itself and was driven by patriotic zeal. He said the result is a clear vote for smaller firms too, saying:”Giving us a chance to do this is a way of encouraging indigenous companies to grow.”

Another Director, Tokunbo Talabi, expressed gratitude to the NCC for organisisng a “suspense filled and tension soaked yet transparent bid process”. He thanked everyone for the support and prayers, adding that the firm will not disappoint Nigerians.

Earlier in his speech, Group Chief Operating Officer, Globacom, Mohammed Jameel who led the team, said the national operator considered the spectrum price too high when compared with what was offered in the past, adding that it does not align with the telco’s business model.

He commended the NCC for the successful completion of the process and wished the winners all the best, adding that Glo will be willing to participate in subsequent spectrum auctions by the NCC in the future.

Represented by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Communications Technology, Dr Tunji Olaopa, the Minister, Communications Technology, Mrs Omobola Johnson said the emergence of a wholesale wireless broadband service provider will accelerate broadband penetration in the country and spur economic growth, development and prosperity of the people of Nigeria.

  • JPMorgan emerges Lead Manager for Eurobond

Kenya, East Africa’s largest economy, invited JPMorgan Chase & Co. (JPM) to arrange the sale of a debut Eurobond that it plans to issue by January, Treasury Secretary, Henry Rotich, said.

Bloomberg report said after negotiations to hire the lead manager, which would probably be completed in the next week or two, Kenya would start marketing the securities abroad over about six-weeks and then issue the dollar-denominated debt, Rotich said in a phone interview yesterday from the capital, Nairobi.

In September, Rotich said the country planned to raise $1.5 billion to $2 billion to repay a $600 million syndicated loan and finance infrastructure including rail links and power-generation projects.

“We have notified JPMorgan and invited them to discuss a letter of mandate, which is essentially a contract, to be the lead manager of the sovereign bond. The bond could be issued in November or the plan could flow over to January, since December is usually a bit quiet,” Rotich said.

Kenya’s move to tap foreign debt markets follows similar issuances by other African nations. Rwanda became the first East African country to sell a Eurobond, raising $400 million in April, while Nigeria and Ghana both issued their second batch of international notes in July. The country has repeatedly delayed plans for the sovereign bond since at least 2007 when the global financial crisis squeezed credit markets. Kenya prefers to have two to three lead arrangers for its inaugural overseas bond, though JPMorgan will have the option to seek co-managers once the contract is signed, Rotich said.

Kenya has also invited Arnold & Porter LLP, based in the U.S., to be lead counsel, Rotich said. The exact timing and amount of money Kenya will seek to raise will be determined in consultation with the arrangers, he said.

Standard & Poor’s and Fitch Ratings have a B+ rating on Kenyan debt. That’s four levels below investment-grade and on par with Zambia and Cape Verde. It has the equivalent B1 rating from Moody’s Investors Service.

  • Winner emerges in Navy chess championship

Winner emerges in Navy chess championship

The Western Naval Command of the Nigerian Navy has emerged winner of the 2013 Inter-Command Chess Championship which held in Calabar, the Cross River State capital.

The command scored 10 points to beat the National Headquarters and Naval Training Command that scored six points each to secure second position while Logistics Command took the third position.

The participating commands included the hosts, the Eastern Naval Command; the defending champions, Western Naval Command; Nigerian Navy Headquarters; Naval Training Command; Logistics Command and Central Naval Command.

Flag Officer commanding the Eastern Naval Command, Rear Admiral Joseph Aikhomu, who stood in for the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice-Admiral D. J. Ezeoba congratulated the winners and urged others to work harder next time.

He said chess, as a sport, is gaining international popularity. He said that some of the benefits of the chess game that has been in existence for about 1, 500 years are that it increases the mathematical and scientific skills of the individual, even as he said that it challenges the intellectual ability of the participant in terms of its problem- solving skills which the participant acquires.

Aikhomu, who was represented by the Chief Staff Officer of the Command, Rear Admiral Henry Babalola, said: “In an effort to enhance the recreational therapy, healthy mind and optimise the memory of the Nigerian Navy personnel at all times, the Naval headquarters deemed it fit to organise the championship as the first sporting event of the year.”

  • After five ballots, Pope Francis emerges

After five ballots, Pope Francis emerges

The new Pope was born in Buenos Aires, one of the five children of an Italian railway worker and his wife. After studying at the seminary in Villa Devoto, he entered the Society of Jesus on March 11, 1958. Bergoglio obtained a licentiate in philosophy from the Colegio Máximo San José in San Miguel, and then taught literature and psychology at the Colegio de la Inmaculada in Santa Fe, and the Colegio del Salvador in Buenos Aires. He was ordained to the priesthood on December 13, 1969, by Archbishop Ramón José Castellano. He attended the Philosophical and Theological Faculty of San Miguel, a seminary in San Miguel. Bergoglio attained the position of novice master there and became professor of theology.

Impressed with his leadership skills, the Society of Jesus promoted Bergoglio and he served as provincial for Argentina from 1973 to 1979. He was transferred in 1980 to become the rector of the seminray in San Miguel where had had studied. He served in that capacity until 1986. He completed his doctoral dissertation in Germany and returned to his homeland to serve as confessor and spiritual director in Córdoba.

Bergoglio succeeded Cardinal Quarracino on February 28, 1998. He was concurrently named ordinary for Eastern Catholics in Argentina, who lacked their own prelate. Pope John Paul II summoned the newly named archbishop to the consistory of February 21, 2001 in Vatican City and elevated Bergoglio with the papal honors of a cardinal. He was named to the Cardinal-Priest of Saint Robert Bellarmino.

As cardinal, Bergoglio was appointed to several administrative positions in the Roman Curia. He served on the Congregation of Clergy, Congregation of Divine Worship and Sacraments, Congregation of Institutes of Consecrated Life and the Congregation of Societies of Apostolic Life. Bergoglio became a member of the Commission on Latin American and the Family Council.

As Cardinal, Bergoglio became known for personal humility, doctrinal conservatism and a commitment to social justice. A simple lifestyle has contributed to his reputation for humility. He lives in a small apartment, rather than in the palatial bishop’s residence. He gave up his chauffeured limousine in favor of public transportation, and he reportedly cooks his own meals.

Upon the death of Pope John Paul II, Bergoglio, considered papabile himself, participated in the 2005 papal conclave as a cardinal elector, the conclave that selected Pope Benedict XVI. A widespread theory says that he was in a tight fight with Ratzinger until he himself adviced crying not to be voted. Earlier, he had participated in the funeral of Pope John Paul II and acted as a regent alongside the College of Cardinals, governing the Holy See and the Roman Catholic Church during the interregnum sede vacante period. Cardinal Bergoglio remains eligible to participate in conclaves that begin before his 80th birthday on December 17, 2016.

During the 2005 Synod of Bishops, he was elected a member of the Post-Synodal council. Catholic journalist John L. Allen, Jr. reported that Bergoglio was a frontrunner in the 2005 Conclave. An unauthorized diary of uncertain authenticity released in September 2005 confirmed that Bergogolio was the runner-up and main challenger of Cardinal Ratzinger at that conclave. The purported diary of the anonymous cardinal claimed Bergoglio received 40 votes in the third ballot, but fell back to 26 at the fourth and decisive ballot.

On November 8, 2005, Bergoglio was elected President of the Argentine Episcopal Conference for a three-year term (2005–2008) by a large majority of the Argentine bishops, which according to reports confirms his local leadership and the international prestige earned by his alleged performance in the conclave. He was reelected on November 11, 2008.

    Liberation theology

Bergoglio is an accomplished theologian who distanced himself from liberation theology early in his career. He is thought to be close to Comunione e Liberazione, a conservative lay movement.

    Homosexuality /Abortion and euthanasia

He has affirmed church teaching on homosexuality, though he teaches the importance of respecting individuals who are gay. He strongly opposed legislation introduced in 2010 by the Argentine Government to allow same-sex marriage. In a letter to the monasteries of Buenos Aires, he wrote: “Let’s not be naive, we’re not talking about a simple political battle; it is a destructive pretension against the plan of God. We are not talking about a mere bill, but rather a machination of the Father of Lies that seeks to confuse and deceive the children of God.” He has also insisted that adoption by gays and lesbians is a form of discrimination against children. This position received a rebuke from Argentine president Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, who said the church’s tone was reminiscent of “medieval times and the Inquisition”.
