  • Eminem wins copyright case against political party

Eminem wins copyright case against political party

A New Zealand political party is to pay more than $400,000 to a U.S. rapper, Eminem, for using music similar to his in a television commercial to help win an election.

A track entitled “Eminem Esque’’ which played during the National Party’s successful 2014 national election campaign, was found by a New Zealand court to have substantially copied Eminem’s 2002 hit – Lose Yourself .

The court held that the National Party used the song 186 times during the campaign before taking the advert off the air.

“This decision is a warning to sound-alike music producers and their clients everywhere,” Adam Simpson, director of Simpsons Solicitors, who acted for Eminem’s music company, Eight Mile Style, said in a statement.

The National Party said that the music was licensed with one of New Zealand’s main industry copyright bodies, the Australasian Mechanical Copyright Owners Society (AMCOS).

“Being licensed and available for purchase, and having taken advice from our suppliers, the party believed the purchase was legal,” National Party President Peter Goodfellow said in a statement.

“The party is now considering the implications of the judgment and the next steps. We already have a claim against the suppliers and licensors of the track,’’ it said.

The court found that Eight Mile Style was entitled to damages of NZ$600,000 ($413,000) with interest from June 28, 2014.

“We anticipate that all the defendants will meet to discuss the implications of the decision in the very near future,” copyright body, AMCOS, said in an electronic mail.

AMCOS hailed the decision as an important step toward resolution of the matter.

The publisher had exclusive control over the song, and rarely gave permission for its use in advertising.

“It was no coincidence that the works sounded the same.

“The undeniable inference to be drawn from the evidence is that the composer of ‘Eminem Esque’ had ‘Lose Yourself’ in front of him at the time of composition,” it added.

  • EMINEM sued over ‘Rap God’ sample

EMINEM sued over ‘Rap God’ sample

AMERICAN rapper, Marshal Mathers, aka Eminem, has found himself in troubled waters after allegedly using a sample without permission. The artiste is reportedly being sued for a staggering $8 million by Chicago rappers, Hotstylz, over the lyrics to Rap God.

Raymond Jones from the rap trio has claimed that Eminem and Shady Records sampled 25 seconds of their 2007 track Lookin Boy, without asking permission from appropriate quarters.

The track which features on The Marshal Mathers LP 2made the Guinness book of World Records after it was released for having the most words in a single, 1,560 to be exact.

“He took so much of the record. That just don’t sit right with us. The thing is they used so much of the song, he could have reached out. He could have reached out to us directly. He could have found a way to reach out to us through some kind of channel.

“We just addressed that issue on a song called Rap Fraud. We addressed how we felt about it,”Jones said in an interview.

This is not the first time a rapper would be sued for lifting other artiste’s works. The past 12 months have been a whirlwind of sampling lawsuits. From Jay Z and Frank Ocean to DJ Mustard and Eminem, this past year the abundance of copyright infringement cases kept building until it seemed the suits would not stop rolling in, with each one more hair-raising than the next.

Although some of the cases appeared to be pure rhetoric, many of the accusations brought upon rappers certainly seemed to have legs. Ludacris was sued along with David Banner for illegally using a sample on the 2010 record Bewith You, while Drake was targeted for Pound Cake/Paris Morton Music 2 off Nothing Was The Same. A heap of other cases naming Chris Brown, Rihanna, Beyonce, Diplo, Azealia Banks, Lil Wayne, Rick Ross and Diddy also rolled in, some with more legitimate claims than others.

  • Rihanna, Eminem to perform at MTV Movie Awards

Rihanna, Eminem to perform at MTV Movie Awards

A few hours to this year’s edition of the MTV Movie Awards, the organisers have announced global superstars, Eminem and Rihanna, as the top performers.

The duo will take the stage for the first live performance of their number one smash hit, The Monster, at the awards ceremony, which holds at the Los Angeles’ Nokia Theater live today.

In 2009, Eminem performed a medley of We Made You/ Crack a Bottle and then created one of the most-talked about moments in the movie awards history with Sasha Baron Cohen. But Rihanna had earlier performed one of her signature hits, Umbrella, with Jay Z in 2007.

Other moments to look out for at the ceremony include additional performances by 21 one pilots, who will be performing their new single, Car Radio, and Ellie Goulding & Zedd, performing excerpts from the Divergent soundtrack. There will also be presentation of the MTV Generation Award to Mark Wahlberg by his fellow Entourage cast members, Adrian Grenier, Kevin Connolly, Jerry Ferrara and Kevin Dillon- the first public reunion for the cast ahead of their highly anticipated movie release in June 2015.

This year, the MTV Movie Awards has the distinction of being the only awards show to nominate cinematic legend, Robert De Niro, Kanye West and Joan Rivers in the same category (Best Cameo). Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto take on Ice Cube and Kevin Hart (Best On-Screen Duo) while Jennifer Aniston is pitted against Zac Efron, Chris Hemsworth, Leonardo DiCaprio and Sam Claflin for the coveted Best Shirtless Performance category.

Again, 12 Years a Slave is up with a nomination in the Movie of The Year category, going against American Hustle, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and The Wolf of Wall Street.
