Kano worst hit by protest -Emir Sanusi

16th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, on Friday, said Kano was the worst hit by the  #EndBadGovernance protest which was supposed to be peaceful.

He condemned the violence that erupted in the state on Thursday despite appeals by Governor Abba Yusuf for a peaceful demonstration.

The reinstated emir stated this while addressing newsmen at the palace, Kofar Kudu.

Further condemning the needless violence which led to loss of lives, injuries and destructions of properties, Sanusi described the incident as a major set back for Kano State.

The monarch called on the protesters to discontinue with the protest and not to allow themselves to be deceived.

Sanusi said: “Today is a sad day for the people of Kano as we reflect over the events of yesterday (Thursday).

“The violence of yesterday was what scholars and leaders kept warning against the possibility that miscreants and agents of destruction would hijack peaceful demonstrations and use the opportunity to cause mayhem which led to loss of lives and destruction of properties and injuries to countless people.

“As we said during the stakeholders meeting, any violence in Kano only hurts Kano, it hurts innocent people. The young people who died are our children, the properties that were burnt and stolen belongs to the people of Kano.

“We have set ourselves back. The printing press that was burnt will have to be rebuilt, the machines will have to be bought and these are funds that could have gone into youth empowerment, into poverty alleviation, into education, healthcare and nutrition and for addressing the very problems that we are protesting against.

“The Digital Centre of excellence that was built by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) was aimed at educating our youths to give them digital training and preparing them for examinations.

“I had personally spoken to the Minister and I am aware that the minister was due to come in next week to commission this centre along with the Governor.

“We have vandalised and destroyed the computers; we have wasted hundreds of millions of Naira that is supposed to be investment in human capital.

“North and Kano in particular were the most affected by consequences of the protest.

“I am calling on people of Kano not to allow themselves to repeat what happened yesterday or to be deceived into continuing with this kind of mayhem.

“Parents should advise their children, Ward heads, district heads and imams should call on our people and let them understand that this violence only hurts Kano, only sets Kano back and nobody is going to come and fix our problems.

“We pray to Allah to have mercy on the souls that have passed away, to restore the wealth of those who have been looted or vandalised, to grant good health to those who are injured in a short time.

“Let us continue to persevere. Kano has witnessed difficult times before, it has gone through worse than this and it has risen.

“Let us revive the Kano spirit of strength, of perseverance and upholding steadfast onto God who will lift us up and out of this even stronger.

“We pray to Allah to support all those who mean well for Kano and to be our protector and sufficient guardian against all of those who wish us evil.

“We call on the people to maintain the peace, to corporate with security agencies, to report any suspicious activity by human beings.

“When people steal goods they always find a buyer, let us try and refuse to buy stolen goods and instead encourage those young men and women to return those goods to their owners.”

Suspend protest, submit demands, Gov Yusuf, Emir Sanusi tell planners

Kano state governor, Abba Yusuf and the reinstated Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, on Wednesday, July 31, called on the planners of the proposed nationwide protest slated for August 1, to suspend any demonstration and instead, submit their demands before the authorities for possible actions.

The governor spoke at Africa House of Government House, Kano, during his meeting with traditional rulers and the business community, with Emir Sanusi in attendance.

Yusuf emphasised that protests would not yield the desired results, stating that “protest will not take us anywhere.”

Emir Sanusi, while speaking on the proposed nationwide protest, advised the youth to desist from the planned protest, pointing out that the planners are faceless.

The monarch said he has heard of the planned protest in the media that protesters would begin the protest near his palace but he does know or heard from the planners or sponsors, saying that such demonstrations are dangerous to join.

Governor Yusuf, the protest planners in Kano should submit their demands to him, promising “that when the demands are submitted to me I will personally convey them to President Bola Tinubu.”

Yusuf added: “I will mobilise a special delegation from the state comprising of traditional rulers, businessmen and Ulamas to deliver all your demands to President Bola Tinubu.

“Given the economic position of Kano in Nigeria and the African continent, protests especially violent ones, will  destabilise peace and worsen the economy.”

Governor Yusuf who acknowledged the constitutional rights of peaceful protests, warned against violent protest in Kano urging those planning to protest to shelve it and show themselves.

He said his administration has introduced numerous interventions to cushion the economic hardship adding that, more measures will be unveiled to turn around the economy and create jobs.

Governor Yusuf called on the business community to help intervene in the current economic challenges by reducing prices of commodities.

He announced plans to establish an agency on price control in Kano state.

“We will do it, in collaboration with the business community for the benefit of the people of state.”

Yusuf highlighted the state government’s efforts towards implementing policies and programmes aimed at enhancing the well-being of the masses.

“We are united in our quest for positive change that will yield the desired objectives of peace, progress and political stability.

“However, I must emphasise that the social media has a negative impact by allowing the abuse of leaders, which will not help us achieve our goals.

“This must stop, as it will only hinder our progress. We are facing a critical situation of hunger and other challenges, and we must work together to address them constructively.

“Our administration is currently sponsoring over 1,000 students pursuing various courses in foreign countries.

“We are also actively working to empower women and combat poverty in the state through a monthly programme which has already benefited over 5,000 women with a monthly stipend of N5,000, totaling over N260 million.”

”I am urging the residents to maintain peace and avoid any actions that could lead to unrest.

JUST IN: Reinstated Emir Sanusi returns to palace

The reinstated Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, returned to the Palace in the early hours of Saturday.

The Nation reported the Kano State Emirates Council (Amendment Number 2) Law, 2024 received the assent of Governor Abba Yusuf on Thursday.

The five emirate councils established in the State—Kano, Bichi, Rano, Karaye and Gaya—were eliminated by the modified law.

The Governor signed the bill into law in the presence of his Deputy Aminu Abdulsalam, Speaker, Isma’il Falgore and the SSG, Abdullahi Bichi.

Following the signing, the Governor announced Emir Sanusi ll’s return. Sanusi ll was removed from office in 2020 by former Governor Umar Ganduje.

During a ceremony to accept Governor Yusuf’s appointment letter, Emir Sanusi declared that being reinstated was a divine blessing.

“The Arabians used to say that in everything we witness, there is a lesson that shows us that God is there. Whatever happens to an individual is preordained by Allah, and for those who are sensible enough, it’s a lesson. God is one, and whatever He does, nobody can change, and what He doesn’t do, nobody can,” he said at the Government House in Kano on Friday just after he got the letter.

“About 10 years ago, in this same place, former Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso gave me my appointment letter as the Emir of Kano. Today, after 10 years, I am here again receiving a reappointment letter from Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.

“Time will not permit long talks. Whatever we needed to say, we said when we were leaving. We made it clear that God has preordained the time and cause for everything and everyone. He gives leadership to whom He wants and at the time He wants. When He gives, no one can take it away, and when He takes it away, nobody can bring it back.”

Reinstatement of Emir Sanusi could set Kano on fire-APC youths

A youth group, APC Youth Crusaders For Peace and Development, which raised the alarm some months ago that Kano Governor, Abba Yusuf and his godfather, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, were plotting to destabilise the administration of President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, said the recent signing of a controversial bill abolishing the five emirates of the state by the Governor has validated their concerns.

In a statement, the National Coordinator, Hon. Cyril Adamu, recalled the earlier warning about a sinister plot by Governor Yusuf and other powerful figures to undermine Kano and Nigeria.

He emphasised the abolishment of the five emirates of Kano state was part of this alleged plot.

He insisted that the Governor’s action was intended to stoke unrest in the state and the country as a whole, to destabilise President Tinubu’s administration.

The statement reads: “APC Youth Crusaders For Peace and Development has been vindicated by the recent action of the Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, signing into law a controversial bill to abolish the five emirates of the state. The AYCPD had revealed a sinister plot by Governor Yusuf and some powerful forces to destroy Kano and Nigeria, simply because Rabiu Kwankwaso didn’t win the last presidential election.

“Governor Yusuf being a Northerner and fully aware of the value the subjects of the emirates placed on the royal stools, decided to abolish the emirates just to spark unrest in the state in a bid to destabilise the administration of President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“The manner in which the controversial Kano State Emirate Council (Repeal) Bill 2024 was signed into law by the governor the same day it was passed by the state house of assembly, raised suspicions that it is a calculated move to destroy the traditional institutions in the state, and by extension, the peace and stability of the state and the country at large.

“Ever since Kano State was divided into five emirates — Kano, Rano, Gaya, Karaye, and Bichi — in 2019, the state has experienced increased peace and development. This is largely due to the multiple emirs leading peace talks and advocating for development. However, Governor Yusuf seems to be disregarding these positive developments due to some political vendetta. In a show of political arrogance, the governor rudely ordered the royal fathers to ‘vacate their palaces within 48 hours’.

“The Governor plans to revert Kano to a single emirate and reinstate the deposed Emir, Muhammadu Sanusi II. This could lead to a breakdown of law and order and a generational conflict between the ruling houses of Kano. Political unrest is already brewing in the state following the controversial bill’s signing into law.

“We are deeply concerned about this development and its potential to undermine the democratic process, threaten the safety and security of the citizens, and destabilize the entire region and country at large. This dangerous plot is a desperate attempt to discredit Tinubu’s administration in the North and pave the way for an easier run for Kwankwaso in 2027.

“Governor Abba Yusuf and his political godfather, Rabiu Kwankwaso, must cease using politics to disrupt the peace and stability of Kano State. Since taking office, Governor Yusuf has neglected his primary responsibility of providing good governance to the people of Kano state, choosing instead to pursue a personal vendetta against his godfather’s political enemies. This must come to an end. The people of Kano deserve better. Governor Yusuf’s feud with imagined enemies is plunging the state into chaos and anarchy.

“We urge Northern elders and thought leaders to step in and intervene by reining in Governor Yusuf before the growing unrest in the state escalates into a full-blown crisis. Kano holds a significant position in the region and the country’s economic and political spheres. Therefore, it is our responsibility to safeguard the state from the destructive consequences of the actions of desperate leaders such as Governor Yusuf and his godfather, Rabiu Kwankwaso.”

    Aliko Dangote

The emotional highlight of many of the tributes was Aliko Dangote’s solemn message. Dangote who was visibly moved and holding back tears, shared touching anecdotes about his close ties with Herbert Wigwe.

Dangote referred to Wigwe as a devoted friend, mentee, and supporter, expressing profound gratitude for the warmth of their friendship.

He reminisced about Wigwe’s transformative impact on the banking sector, breaking records and reshaping the industry.

The emotional tribute highlighted Wigwe’s philanthropic endeavours, emphasising the lasting legacy he leaves behind.

In a momentous announcement, Dangote unveiled plans to immortalize Herbert Wigwe by naming the road leading to the Dangote Refinery as the “Herbert Wigwe Road.”

“To immortalise my beloved friend, my brother, and my mentee, I have actually decided to name our major refinery and petrochemical road.

“Out of the 120 kilometres, the biggest road will now be named Herbert Wigwe,” he said.

    Muhammadu Sanusi II

A former Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, broke down in tears while paying tribute to former Group Chief Executive Officer of Access Holdings Plc, Herbert Wigwe.

“I was thinking I would die and leave Herbert. We have all heard about him, about his loyalty,” he said in an emotionally laden voice.

He recalled how the late banker stood by his side all through his travails after being removed as Emir of Kano by former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje.

According to Sanusi, Herbert assured him of his unflinching support and loyalty.

“He said to me, ‘Your Highness, don’t worry. Whatever happens, don’t worry. We are here for you.’ On the day I heard on the radio that I was dethroned, I called him and said I wanted to come to Lagos.

“The announcement was made about 9 am, by noon Herbert had a plane at the tarmac in Kano. The plan then was to take me into exile for many years. I put my family on that plane and sent them to Lagos, with no phone calls. Herbert received them and put them in a hotel.

“Later, he got them accommodation. For months, when I came, they stayed there. Your Highness, if you want to travel, just call Shola.”

He also narrated how they helped resolve a serious challenge in the banking sector at the time.

“The objective then was to link the banking sector assets to the real economy and Aig and Herbert in Access Bank were chosen as the chairpersons on the subcommittee on economic development. Most of what I achieved in the Central Bank would not have been possible without them.”

“About two years ago, I put all my savings in a trust for the education of my children because I have many. My priority as a father is to make sure that when I pass away, they will have a good education.

“Paul was a solicitor put in that trust, Herbert was the lead protector. Paul will remember when we had the first formal meeting, I said, ‘Herbert I am placing you in charge of this trust for the education of my children because I know that even if I died and did not leave any money, you will educate our children,” he said.

    Tochi Wigwe

Tochi, the daughter of late Access Bank CEO Herbert Wigwe was emotional. She broke down in tears while rendering a tribute to her dad.

Tochi eulogised Wigwe as a committed and doting father, who was an “unwavering anchor for family and friends”.

She said: “In this moment, for the first time, your words resonate deeply within me. No longer do I want to tilt my head and squint my eyes in confusion. You were simply extraordinary.

“You urged me to reach new heights I never even imagined. Whenever doubt clouded my mind, you would chuckle knowingly and say, ‘You really just don’t know whose child you are, you’ll soon find out.’ And once again, you were right: I’ve come to find out.

“I could never fathom how you managed to do it all; it seemed inconceivable. Turning everything you touched to gold while remaining an unwavering anchor for your family and friends.

“Distance meant absolutely nothing to you. You travelled continents on a whim just to see me for a couple of minutes before heading back to your responsibilities,” she continued.

“According to him, my mother Hannah and I were the most beautiful and my nickname was also ‘pretty.’

“Who will prompt me to flash a peace sign in every photo; who will engage in marathon debates with my friends and myself on flights to Cape Town; who will inquire ‘what are they saying about me online today?’ And who will ask me about my thoughts on Wigwe University?

“You were Paradox, a tower of strength with a heart as soft as silk. You can never raise your voice at me without calling me an hour later to apologise.”

  • Fulanis are not criminals, says Emir Sanusi

Fulanis are not criminals, says Emir Sanusi

The Emir of Kano, Alhaji Sanusi Lamido Sanusi 11 has declared that Fulanis are not terrorists or criminals as perceived by some Nigerians.

Sanusi made the declaration at the weekend in Minna at a National Executive Council meeting of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) attended by Lamido of Adamawa , Muhammadu Barkindo Musdafa, Professor Ango Abdullahi, Dr. Aliyu Tilde and other  stakeholders.

According to him, Fulanis are Nigerians who are law abiding citizens that respect the constituted authorities in the country.

He urged Nigerians to avoid ethnic profiling whenever a crime is committed by persons of certain tribe saying criminals have no tribal marks.

The meeting was held with the leadership of various Fulani socio-cultural groups such as Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association (MACBA), Miyetti Allah Katul Houre and Gan Allah Fulani Development Association as a means to find way of ending the recurring violent clashes involving and other Nigerians across the country.

The Emir urged the various Fulani associations to identify criminals within their midst for prosecution and called on the herders to imbibe the culture of patient and perseverance even in the face of provocation.

Emir Sanusi urged stakeholders to also liaise with state governors of Niger, Kogi, Nasarawa and Kano who have indicated interest to allocate grazing reserves with a view to developing them.

The Zonal Chairman of the National Executive Committee of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association(MACBA), Alhaji Gidado Siddiki said state governors to emulate are  Governors Willie Obiano and Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Anambra and Enugu states who have been able to effectively stem the recurring clashes between farmers and herders while their others and the federal government were at a loss on how to begin.

He said that the two southeast governors were open-minded in their approach to tackling the clashes adding that through stakeholders meetings which included the leadership of the herders associations, farmers unions, traditional rulers and community leaders across all the local government areas in the affected states, they were able to understand the causes of the clashes and found amicable ways of addressing them.

Siddiki averred that the measures, which have worked in stemming the tide of violent conflict among herders and farmers in the two states should serve as models to other governors.

“Conflict between herdsmen and farmers has a long history; the solution has been to engage all stakeholders to find an amicable of resolving such,” he noted, even as he called on politicians to avoid exacerbating the conflict for selfish reasons.
