Emir names Kwara Gov Sardaunan Ilorin, hails leadership qualities

Kwara Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has been named the Sardaunan Ilorin, a prestigious title that the Emir of Ilorin Dr Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari said compensates for the Governor’s love for and investment in the culture and tradition of Nigeria’s southernmost Emirate.

That makes the Governor the second Sardauna of the ancient town.

His predecessor — and the first person to hold the title in Ilorin — was the multi-millionaire philanthropist Alhaji Umar Saro who died a few years ago.

Sir Ahmadu Bello, arguably the most venerated politician in the old northern Nigeria in living memory, was mostly known for his Sardauna of Sokoto title.

At a brief event announcing the traditional title, the Emir commended Governor Abdulrazaq for his leadership qualities and his efforts to promote the interest of the community, including his unmatched support for the Durbar.

The Governor had been given different traditional titles across the State, such as Soludero of Offa Kingdom; Sadaukin Lafiagi; Kauran Kaiama; and Akorede of Oro Kingdom, among others.

The Emir commended the Governor for his excellent leadership role in the state and at the national level as NGF chairman.

“I am convinced that Governor AbdulRazaq is not only popular, but he also believes in and promotes our tradition and custom. He made sure he participated actively in the annual Ilorin Grand Durbar. So he deserves the honour of a Chieftaincy title to do more. For this reason and by my prerogative power, I confer on you the Sardauna of Ilorin from today,” the Emir declared.

“In our long-standing practices, one of the prominent qualities we always consider before conferring chieftaincy titles is popularity. We usually consider whether or not such a person is famous within his immediate community and beyond.

“From all indications, Governor AbdulRazaq is popular both at home and abroad, and widely celebrated, to the extent of being chosen as Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum.”

The Emir described AbdulRazaq as a lover and promoter of peace, an attribute he noted is responsible for the Governor’s continued progress.

“Let us be thankful to God that we are gifted this kind of Governor. Despite all forms of security challenges across the country, Kwara has been relatively peaceful. We must give credit to the God Almighty who accepts our prayers, and to the Governor for encouraging peace. That is why he has been progressive and he will continue to progress,” he added.

The Governor thanked the Emir for the traditional title, which he said is an encouragement to do more for the community and the people.

“On the conferment of the Sardauna of Ilorin title, it is said that it is not an ordinary title, going by the antecedents of those who have occupied the position across Nigeria. We are truly grateful and this encourages us to do more for our communities. Thank you very much indeed, Your Royal Highness,” Governor Abdulrazaq said.

The Governor commended the Emir and other traditional rulers for maintaining peace and stability in their domains, saying the Northern Nigeria Governors’ Forum believes that constitutional roles be given to the traditional rulers in the country.

“Today’s visit was to thank the traditional council personalified by his Royal Highness, the Emir of Ilorin, and to also thank him for the peace we enjoy during the protest across Nigeria,” the Governor said.

In another twist to the Kano Emirate tale, a state High Court yesterday ordered the police to evict the deposed Emir Aminu Ado Bayero from the Nasarawa Palace.

Justice Amina Aliyu issued an interim injunction restraining Bayero and the emirs of Bichi, Rano, Gaya and Karaye from parading themselves as monarchs.

The order is to subsist pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice filed by the applicants.

The judge gave the order after hearing yesterday’s ex-parte application by counsel for the state – Ibrahim Isa Wangida.

It comes four days after the Federal High Court in Kano granted an order restraining the state government from enforcing the Emirate Council Repeal Law that reinstated Sanusi Lamido Sanusi II.

Yesterday’s order reads: “That an order of interim injunction is hereby granted restraining the first, second, third, fourth and fifth defendants either by themselves, servants, privies, and or any other persons or officers serving under them or acting in connection with any other person from parading themselves as Emirs of Kano, Bichi, Gaya, Rano and Karaye pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice filed by the applicants.

“That an order is hereby granted to the extent that the Commissioner of Police Kano State should immediately take over the palace of the Emir of Kano situated at State Road Kano and evict the first defendant/respondent from the said palace pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice dated 24 May, 2024.

“That an order of this hon. court is hereby granted restraining the first, second, third, fourth and fifth Defendants from parading themselves as Emirs of Kano, Bichi, Gaya, Rano and Karaye in the interest of peace in Kano pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice.”

The judge ordered the CP “to ensure immediate implementation of the order in the interest of justice.”

He adjourned until June 11 for a hearing of the motion on notice.

    Deputy governor apologises to Ribadu

Deputy Governor, Aminu Gwarzo, apologised to the National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu, for falsely accusing him of undue involvement in the crisis.

Gwarzo also urged security agencies to investigate Bayero’s return to the Emirate.

“As it is now, he (Bayero) is constituting security threats to the state,” the deputy governor said.

Gwarzo had alleged that Ribadu provided the two chattered aircraft that “smuggled” Bayero from Abuja into Kano when he (Bayero) had accepted his dethronement and left the state.

He had also accused the NSA of providing enough security in the state that received Bayero and took him to Nasarawa palace.

The office of the NSA, however, denied the allegation and threatened legal action if the deputy governor failed to provide evidence to prove his allegations.

Gwarzo said: “We are all human and we err at any time.

“On behave of the governor and government of Kano State, we apologise for the embarrassment or inconvenience our allegation might have caused him.

“The office of the NSA has refuted the allegations and distanced itself from what we had alleged.

“Yesterday (Sunday) I read the rebuttal in about three different media and today (yesterday) I watched him on network news talking about going to court if we fail to provide evidence.

“We have to acknowledge that we were misled into believing that the NSA was behind what happened along this line: the chattering of the two flights that smuggled the deposed emir back to Kano, the security cover that escorted him and the security on the ground that received him and took him to Nasarawa House.

“We have investigated deeply and come to understand that the NSA was not involved.

“But thank God, at least we have been able to inform him (NSA) and all concerned about all that is happening, which they would not have had knowledge of.

“He (Ribadu) has denied having a hand in the coming back of the dethroned emir.

“With his pedigree, antecedents and integrity, I believe if he had any hand in it, he would have been very straightforward to say yes he is the one behind it.

“Therefore, there is nothing further we can say than apologise to his person and office.

“We were really worried and shocked when his name (Ribadu) was mentioned as being behind this diabolical act.

“However, we send our apologies to him for whatever embarrassment or inconvenience it caused him.”
