    Three men docked over laptops, phones theft

    Three men Lawal Musa, Mubarak Isyaku and Ali Mohammed on Monday appeared before a Minna Magistrate’s Court charged with stealing three laptops and three mobile phones.

    The trio are standing trial on a two-count charge of criminal conspiracy and robbery punishable under sections 97 and 298 of the penal code law.

    According to Mr Emmanuel Danladi, the Police Prosecutor, the matter was reported at the Bosso Police Division by one Dako Dickson, a resident of Western Bye-pass, Minna on June 20.

    Danladi quoted the complainant as alleging that the accused invaded their compound on June 19, armed with cutlasses and axes, and robbed them of the items valued at N588,000.

    He said that during police investigation, the three men were tracked down and arrested.

    “They later confessed to have sold the properties to one Audu Mohammed, at the rate of N174,000,” he told the court.

    When the charges were read to the accused, they all pleaded not guilty.

    The Magistrate, Fati Auna, however, declined to take their plea on the grounds that her court lacked jurisdiction to hear the matter.

    Auna ordered that the trio be remanded in prison custody and directed the police to forward the case file to the State Director of Public Prosecution, for legal advice.

    She thereafter adjourned the case until Dec. 5, for further mention.

    Man pleads guilty to raping daughter, friend

    A 60-year-old man, Nuhu Mohammed, on Thursday pleaded guilty to raping his 12-year-old daughter and her 13-year-old friend.

    Mohammed, who appeared before a Minna Magistrate’s Court, is standing trial on a one-count charge of unlawful sexual intercourse with two minors.

    The offence runs contrary to Section 18(2) of the Child Rights Law of Niger State 2010.

    Mohammed, after pleading guilty to the offence, begged the court for leniency.

    His plea was, however, not taken by the Magistrate, Fati Auna, on the grounds that her court lacked the jurisdiction to hear the case.

    Auna directed the Police to forward the case file to the State Director of Public Prosecution for legal advice, and ordered that the defendant be remanded in prison pending the advice.

    She, thereafter, adjourned the matter until Nov. 16, for further mention.

    The Police Prosecutor, Mr Emmanuel Danladi, had told the court that one Ahmad Aliyu of Garatu village in Bosso Local Government of Niger, reported the matter at the Kpakungu Police Station, on Oct. 17.

    Danladi alleged that the defendant had lured the two minors into his shop and had carnal knowledge of them.

    He further told the court that the defendant confessed to the crime during police investigation.

    Court remands men over car theft

    Two men – Sunday Ibrahim and Abdulwahab Usman, were on Tuesday arraigned in a Minna Magistrates’ Court, over alleged attempt to steal a car.

    Magistrate Fati Auna ordered that the defendants be remanded in prison custody and adjourned the case until Oct.16 for further mention.

    The Prosecutor, Insp. Emmanuel Danladi, had told the court that one Ogbodo Afam of Tunga Minna, reported the matter at the police station on Sept. 30.
    Danladi quoted the complainant as alleging that on the same date at about 5:35p.m, the accused persons damaged his car in the process of attempting to steal it from where he parked it at Maitumbi area.

    He said the offences contravened Sections 97, 95 and 327 of the Penal Code.

    The prosecutor thereafter prayed the court for an adjournment as investigation into the matter was still ongoing.

    Police arraign man for breach of trust

    The police on Friday arraigned one Kabiru Garba of no fixed address in a Minna Magistrates’ Court for alleged breach of trust.

    Garba is standing trial on a two-count charge of criminal breach of trust and cheating, offences that contravened the provisions of Sections 312 and 322 of the Penal Code.

    The Prosecutor, Insp. Emmanuel Danladi, had told the court that one Iliya Musa of Sardauna Motors, Minna, reported the matter at the police station on Sept. 8.
    Danladi quoted the complainant as alleging that the defendant deceitfully collected his car valued at N650, 000 on the pretext that he had a buyer.

    The complainant said Garba remitted only N230, 000 to him after he sold the car and kept the balance.

    The defendant denied committing the offences, while the prosecutor asked for an adjournment to enable the police conclude investigation.

    Magistrate Maryam King granted the defendant bail in the sum of N200, 000 and a surety in like sum.

    King said the surety must be a civil servant, not below grade level 14, who resides within the court’s jurisdiction

    Court remands teacher for strangling son

    A Minna Magistrates’ Court on Friday ordered the remand of a 38-year-old Arabic teacher, Bashiru Isah, accused of strangling his own son.

    Isah was arraigned on a one count charge of culpable homicide, punishable under Section 221 of the Penal Code Law.

    The Police prosecutor, Insp. Emmanuel Danladi, told the court that one Aisha Bashiru, wife to the accused person, reported the matter at Lapai Police Division on Sept. 19.

    Danladi said the complainant alleged that on the same date at about 1:15 am, her husband, a resident of Ebbo village in Lapai, took their son into his room and strangled him to death with his hands without any reasonable excuse.

    He said Isah admitted committing the crime during police investigation.

     Reports that when the charge was read to the accused person, he pleaded guilty.

    However, the Magistrate, Maryam King, said the court would not record the plea of the accused because it lacked jurisdiction to try the case.

    King therefore directed the police to forward the case file to the State Director of Public Prosecution for legal advice.

    She adjourned the matter till Oct. 26, for further mention.

    Court arraigns three men over theft

    Three men charged with theft and receiving stolen property were on Friday arraigned at a Magistrates’ Court, Minna.

    The accused, Kamal Aliyu, Naziru Salisu and Sadiq Sani are of no fixed address.

    They were docked on a four-count charge of criminal conspiracy, house breaking, theft and receiving stolen property.

    The Police Prosecutor, Insp. Emmanuel Danladi, told the court that one Emmanuel Omoniyi of Railway Quarters, Minna, reported the matter at the Police Station on March 16, 2017.

    Danladi said that the complainant alleged that ‎some persons broke into his bedroom while he travelled on March 15 and carted away his Star Times decoder, a Nokia telephone and sum of N150, 000.

    He said that during police investigation, it was discovered that a man called Koko, now at large, conspired with the first accused to break into the complainant’s room and stole his property.‎

    According to him, the first accused was said to have sold the decoder‎ to the second accused, who in turn sold it to the third accused.

    Danladi said that the offences contravened sections 97, 347, 287 and 317 of the penal code‎.

    The accused pleaded not guilty to the charges.

    The prosecutor, therefore, prayed the court to adjourn the matter to enable police complete investigation on it.

    The Magistrate, Mrs Mariam Kings, ordered that the first accused should be remanded in prison, and granted bail to the second and third accused in the sum of N50, 000 each, with a surety in like sum.

    Kings adjourned the matter until Sept. 20.

  • Farmer remanded for witchcraft

    A Minna Magistrates Court on Thursday ordered the remand in prison custody of a 40-year-old farmer, Umaru Musa, on allegations of witchcraft.

    The police arraigned Musa on a two-count charge of abduction and witchcraft for ritual purposes, contrary to section 273 and 216 of the penal code.

    The Police Prosecutor, Insp. Emmanuel Danladi, told the court that one Hussaini Bawa of Tatiko village in Paikoro Local Government Area‎ reported the matter at the police station on March 16.

    Danladi said that Bawa alleged that the accused abducted his 13-year-old son and took him to a forest along Paiko road with the intention to use his manhood for money ritual.

    He said that a team of police detectives arrested the accused with the victim in his custody.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

    The prosecutor, therefore, prayed the court for an adjournment to enable the police complete its investigation into the matter.

    He also objected to bail for the accused person, arguing that the offences were not ordinarily bailable.

    Presiding Magistrate‎ Aisha Bawa ruled that the accused person be remanded in prison and adjourned the case to April 20 for further mention.
