    Tinubu honours Iwuanyanwu’s legacy

    Nigeria’s President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has praised the exceptional leadership qualities of the late Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, former President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, during his burial at Atta Ikeduru in Imo State.

    Tinubu acknowledged Iwuanyanwu’s profound impact on Nigerian politics and society.

    In his address at the Cathedral Church of St. Matthew,  Atta, Ikeduru, on Friday, President Tinubu emphasized his administration’s commitment to securing a prosperous economic future for Nigerian children.

    President Tinubu, who was represented by the Secretary to the Government of Federation(SGF), Senator George Akume, said his administration had taken bold economic steps to secure the future of Nigerian children.

    He assured Nigerians that his administration had taken bold economic steps in the nation’s movement to secure our own children’s future.

    The president acknowledged that although times are hard at the moment, his administration has proffered solutions to tackle complex economic problems that would ensure the future of generations to come.

    “Let me assure all Nigerians that my administration has taken bold economic steps in the nation’s movement to secure our own children’s future. Although times are hard at the moment, we have proffered solutions to complex problems that have positioned our economy on the path of growth and progress.”

    While commemorating with the immediate family and Ohanaeze Ndigbo for the death of Chief Iwuanyanwu,  he noted that the late business mogul had liberated many Nigerians from the doldrums of poverty, adding that he has touched many lives and was always reaching out to less privileged across the country.

    “He was a nationalist and had championed nation-building by promoting unity and harmony across diverse communities, tribes and religious divides. He also inspired a sense of shared purpose and honesty in service, his leadership as 11th President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo was signposted by General articulative cooperation and unity.

    He employed the power of his office to drive development across the nation  while affecting the lives of many Nigerians irrespective of their state of origin.”

    President  Tinubu praised the late Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu’s innovative contributions as a civil engineer.

    “Specifically, Iwuanyanwu developed a pioneering design combining flexible pavement and concrete parameters, resulting in a mixed asphaltic concrete approved by Nigeria’s Ministry of Works. Notably, this design is still widely used today in constructing airport runways and highways across Nigeria,” the President said.

    He noted that Iwuanyanwu’s passing is a colossal loss, “but his impressive track record of accomplishments, selfless service to humanity, and devotion to God will continue to inspire and remind us of the profound impact he had on our lives.”

    Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma commended the Southeast Governors for the role they played in pulling resources together to make the burial a very successful one.

    He described him as a true nationalist who gave his all,  fighting for humanity, Ndigbo, and all Nigerians.

    Uzodimma said that the late Chief Iwuanyanwu was a bridge builder and selfless leader whose Glass House in Owerri became a rallying point for politicians in Southeast and across the country.

    He said: “For decades, Iwuanyanwu’s home and office in Orji became a pillar of hope. A ceaseless stream of people made the pilgrimage there, seeking guidance and assistance of all kinds. Whether you needed a political appointment, a job opportunity, financial aid, or a simple letter of introduction, your background mattered little to him. What mattered was your need.

    “What truly set Iwuanyanwu apart from the crowd was his ability to do extraordinary things in ordinary ways. Despite owning a powerful media organization, he chose not to draw attention to himself, believing that God was using him to improve the lives and the future of millions of Nigerians. He was indeed an exceptionally humble man who believed that his deeds should speak for him.

    “From his earliest days as a fledgling engineer, through his ventures with Oriental Airlines, Champion Newspapers, and Iwuanyanwu Nationale, he created livelihoods for countless Nigerians. His more than twenty companies, spanning aviation, sports, media, banking, insurance, real estate engineering, and construction, were practical demonstrations of how to grow the economy of Nigeria and strengthen her unity.

    “We in Imo State are immensely proud of this human prodigy whose fame has elevated the visibility of our dear state in no small measure. True to the dictum, “ana esi nulo mara mma puo ama,” which translates to “charity begins at home,” his town, Atta, in Ikeduru Local Government, drank first from his fountain of generosity.

    Sanwo-Olu, Anyaoku, religious leaders hail Iwuanyanwu’s legacy 

    Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, former Secretary General of Commonwealth Emeka Anyanwu and other notable Nigerians have eulogised late President General of Ohaneze Ndigbo World. Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu. 

    They honoured Iwuanyanwu (Ahaejiagamba 1 of Igboland), who died on July 25 at 82 at a service of songs and night of tributes in, Lagos.

    Amongst prominent Nigerians who graced the occasion were former Ogun Governor Aremo Segun Osoba; Senator Ben Obi; former Chief of General Staff Ubitu Ukiwe; Prof. Anya O Anya; Publisher of Vanguard, Sam Amuka Pemu; Mazi Sam Ohuabunwa; Chief Chika Okafor, Otunba Ganiyu Adams, Prof. Anya O. Anya and one time Chief of Naval Staff, retired Admiral Allison Madueke.

    Speaking on his legacies, Sanwo-Olu said:”He embodied excellence and left a lasting legacy. As a business icon, Chief Iwuanyanwu built the Iwuanyanwu group into a power house, an enviable business conglomerate.

    “He gave voice to the less privileged and hopes for the hopeless. His commitment to youths and their development is really inspiring. He founded the Iwuanyanwu Nationale. He used sports to empower the youths as a testament to his dedication to shaping the future of the nation.

    “In politics, he was a respected elder statesman and champion of youths. He lived a life of service and purpose. Today, we are not mourning but here to celebrate the remarkable life of a true Nigerian.

    “As a business icon, Chief Iwuanyanwu built the Iwuanyanwu Group into a powerhouse, an enviable business conglomerate that spans several industries. His contribution to the media space gave birth to what we know today as the Champion newspaper. It amplified the voice of the less privileged and he gave hope to the hopeless, strengthening the voice of the Press in our country, his commitment to youth and youth development is equally inspiring.

    In politics, Chief Emmanuel was a respected elder statesman and a champion of unity. His voice resonated particularly in advocating not only for Igbo but for Nigeria at home and promoting across our nation.

    “His message was a message of a diverse ethnic group and appreciating that we could be different, but we’re all the same.

    “His philanthropic efforts are a reflection of his generous spirit. Through his foundation, countless scholarships were awarded to underprivileged students, and his support for his community touched lives beyond his state of Imo, state and here in Lagos, we felt it and beyond his commitment to improving education and expanding opportunities for the less fortunate and less privileged will forever stand as part of his enduring legacy.”

    Anyaoku, described Iwuanyanwu as an outstanding Nigerian patriot and devoted leader of the people.

    Anyaoku, who referred to the late President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide as a true representation, said he left a great legacy in various areas of the private sector.

    “He was a versatile professional and business man. He was so versatile that he founded a conglomerate of over 20 companies. His death is a huge loss. We are saying adieu to a true icon.

    “From Chief Iwuanyanwu, you would learn the virtue of hard work and integrity. In May, he joined former President Olusegun Obasanjo and myself in writing to the five governors of the South East zone to convene them for a meeting to discuss the development of the zone, which was held in July. Unfortunately, he could not attend because of his illness,” the elder statesman stated.

    Retired Prelate of the Methodist Church Nigeria, Reverend Dr. Samuel Kalu Uche, noted that Chief Iwuanyanwu laboured for the unity of Nigeria since the civil war period.

    According to him: “People are still being oppressed and marginalised in Nigeria causing inequality in the nation. That is why a Yoruba man went to London recently to request for Yoruba Nation yet, he was not arrested”.

    The first daughter of the celebrated icon and Group Managing Director of Champion Newspapers, Dr. Mrs Nwadiuto Iheakanwa, adored her father as a superhero who believed in female children.

    Iheakanwa, who disclosed that she was her father’s only child for nine years before the arrival of other siblings, said that Chief Iwuanyanwu was a true gift, duty-bound and proud of all his children.

    “He has been through a lot in politics, business and even health yet he remained strong. I thank God for the life he lived and for always answering my prayers whenever my dad was sick. I can’t believe that he is gone, please, keep praying for us, we really need strength”, she admitted.

    Tinubu hails late Iwuanyanwu as courageous defender of justice

    President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has eulogised the late Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, describing him as  courageous, defiant of injustice, and uncompromising, with the heart of a gladiator, resolute and indomitable.

    The President’s tribute came as the nation prepares for the burial rites of the renowned philanthropist and President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, who passed away on July 25, 2024, at the age of 81.

    Chief Iwuanyanwu was a multifaceted individual, excelling in sports, business, politics, and philanthropy. President Tinubu noted that he was a colossus of many parts, leaving an enduring legacy in various fields.

    In the sports arena, Chief Iwuanyanwu founded the Iwuanyanwu Nationale Football Club, now Heartland F.C., in 1985. The club  won several national and international championships under his leadership.

    His business acumen and entrepreneurial spirit saw him invest across sectors, showcasing his faith in Nigeria’s potential.

    As a seasoned statesman, Chief Iwuanyanwu served the nation in multiple capacities, including as founding chairman of the Raw Materials and Research Development Council and chairman of the Nigerian Investment Promotion Commission.

    He also chaired the Federal Road Maintenance Agency board, the Nigerian National Lottery, and the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Igbobi.

    President Tinubu commended Chief Iwuanyanwu’s philanthropic efforts, which included providing scholarships to indigent students, building schools and hospitals, and supporting numerous charitable causes.

    His selfless spirit and commitment to serving the nation have left a lasting impact.

    The President extended his condolences to the Iwuanyanwu family, the government, the people of Imo State, and Ndigbo Gburugburu, praying that God Almighty grants Chief Iwuanyanwu’s soul eternal rest.

    “The late Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu was a colossus of many parts. In sports, he was a pioneer; in business, he was ingenious and resourceful; in politics, he was astute; and in philanthropy, he was relentless.

    “The late President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo served the nation in many official capacities. He was the founding chairman of the Raw Materials and Research Development Council (RMRDC) and the Nigerian Investment Promotion Commission (NIPC) chairman.

    “He also served as chairman of the Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA) board, founding chairman of the Nigerian National Lottery, and chairman of the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Igbobi.

    “I mourn the passing of this illustrious son of Nigeria.

    “Chief Iwuanyanwu was courageous, defiant of injustice, and uncompromising. He had the heart of a gladiator, resolute and indomitable.

    “I recall his sports exploits with the Iwuanyanwu Nationale Football Club, now Heartland F.C., which he founded in 1985. Thanks to his acclaimed facility for excellence, the club won several national and international championships. He was a significant factor in Nigeria’s sports development.

    “Chief Iwuanyanwu was enterprising. He believed in Nigeria’s human and material abundance and fecundity, and his investments across sectors and the nation attest to this.

    “The late elder statesman lived a life of service. With his wealth, he served his people and the nation, providing scholarships to indigent students, building schools and hospitals, and supporting many charitable causes.

    “The passing of Chief Iwuanyanwu on July 25, 2024, is a massive loss to the nation. Though he lived to the advanced age of 81, his counsel and stabilising quality will be sorely missed.

    “I commiserate with the Iwuanyanwu family, the government, the people of Imo State, and Ndigbo Gburugburu as the burial rites of Chief Iwuanyanwu begin in a few days.

    “His life and remarkable accomplishments will always be remembered, and may God Almighty grant his soul eternal rest”, he said.

    President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, former presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Ebere Jonathan are expected to attend the burial ceremony of the late president general of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu on November 1 in Imo state.

    The event will kick off with a provincial service of songs on Tuesday, October 29, at Chief Iwuanyanwu’s hometown in Atta. Other notable attendees include members of the Afenifere, the Yoruba Socio-Cultural Organisation, and PANDEF among other cultural organisations and associations.

    While listing the scheduled events of the burial, Amadi said: “Our committee is poised to accord the late President General of Ohaneze Ndigbo Worldwide a deserved and befitting burial; one that would be imprinted in the annals of history.

    “I can confirm that some former Presidents including Chief Olusegun Obasanjo and Dr. Goodluck Ebere Jonathan will attend the burial. I will also tell you that from the information we have gotten, we are 70 percent sure that Mr. President will also be here in Imo for the burial.” Amadi said.

    The committee also assured of adequate security and free traffic flow during the burial, adding that the committee is working with all stakeholders including the security agencies to ensure a hitch-free burial.

    He said: “The body will be received by the State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, at the Government House, Owerri on Wednesday, October 30, and will depart to his residence at New Owerri. A commendation service will be held at CATOL, Owerri on Friday, November 1. Afterwards, the body will move to his hometown where it will lie in state before interment in his compound, following a funeral service at the Cathedral of St. Matthew, Atta.

    The late Chief Iwuanyanwu died on 25th July 2024 after a brief illness at the age of 82 in Abuja. Until his death, he was also the President of Owerri People’s Assembly and a former Board of Trustees member of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

    He was survived by his wife, Lady Princess Frances Iwuanyanwu, many children, and grandchildren including Dr. Mrs. Nwadiuto Iheakanwa, Managing Director, Champion Group Newspapers.
