    Police organise conference on crime prevention

    The Nigeria Police in Enugu say the Force School of Public Relations will involve professionals in delivering lectures during the police Inter Agency Public Relations Conference on Oct. 5 in Enugu.

    Enugu State Public Relations Officer Ebere Amaraizu told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in that involving professionals would curb the rate of crimes.

    He said the provost of the school, Mr Emmanuel Ojukwu and other chartered public relations professionals would participate in the conference entitled: “Inter-Agency Relationship: A Panacea for Effective Crime Prevention and Control’’.

    He also said the Nigeria Police in Enugu would host the conference aimed at consolidating cordial working relationship among security agencies in the state.

    “They will through lectures and practical sessions to x-ray how public relations could be used as veritable tool for sustenance of cooperation among sister security agencies,’’ he said.

    Attack: Enugu CP warns rumour mongers

    The Commissioner of Police in Enugu State, Mr Emmanuel Ojukwu, has warned people spreading rumour of impending attack of some communities in the state to desist from it, saying there is no substance in the story.

    In a statement signed by the Police Spokesman in the command, Ebere Amaraizu, on Sunday, Ojukwu said that anybody found to be spreading the rumour would be prosecuted.

    The statement was sequel to media report that some communities in the state would be attacked by suspected herdsmen.

    Describing the reports as rumour, Ojukwu said that they were capable of causing panic and fear in law abiding citizens of the state.

    He, however, said that measures had been put in place for the safety and security of communities through relevant partnership with stakeholders to ensure that there was peace across the state.

    “Rumour mongering creates fear and panic in minds of people even when there is nothing to fear about as command is ready to ensure safety and security of the citizens of the state,” he said.

    He advised members of the public with useful information to reach the nearest police division through any fast means

    The commissioner said that the Inspector-General of Police, Mr Solomon Arase, had dispatched a high-powered Investigative Team from Force Criminal Investigations Department, Abuja, to unravel the remote and immediate causes of the Nimbo killings.

  • Enugu CP not sacked, but redeployed – Police

    The Nigeria Police Force on Tuesday dismissed reports that the Commissioner of Police in Enugu State, Nwodibo Ekechukwu, has been sacked.

    In a brief telephone conversation with our correspondent on Tuesday, the Force Spokesperson, Olabisi Kolawole, said the CP was not sacked, but redeployed elsewhere.

    “No, the CP was not sacked. He was only redeployed and we didn’t issue a statement on it because it is a normal procedure in the Force.

    “He has been redeployed to Eastern Port Authority in Port Harcourt and it has nothing to do with herdsmen attack in the state,” Kolawole stated.

    She added that Ekechukwu has been replaced by the Commissioner of Police in Kogi State, Emmanuel Ojukwu.

  • Gunmen attack DSS office in Kogi

    Some gunmen on Friday night attacked the office of the Department of State Security in Lokoja, Kogi State.

    The state’s Commissioner of Police, Mr. Emmanuel Ojukwu, said a policeman died when a team of security forces from the police, Army and DSS later engaged the attackers in a gun duel.

    “I cannot confirm whether they are Boko Haram members or not. All I know is that they are criminal elements and the law will take its course.

    “We are investigating to know the circumstances that led to that attack, their motive and others,” the News Agency of Nigeria quoted the police commissioner as saying on the incident.

    He assured the public that the police is always on alert and would work in collaboration with other security agencies to tackle security challenges in the state.

    “Our mandate is to keep the environment and Kogi free and safe for Nigerians to go about their lawful businesses,’’ he said.

    He urged the public to partner with the police in the fight against crime, saying “we should have an understanding that there is no way you can solve crime without community involvement.

    “Criminals live in our midst. Don’t hide them, criminals don’t respect persons. If you are not a victim today, you may be a victim tomorrow if you don’t report criminal elements in your midst.’’

    An eyewitness told NAN that the gunmen arrived the DSS office at about 10:30pm on Friday night.

    The police authorities have said that their officers and men stormed the National Assembly on Thursday, following intelligence report of a likely invasion of the House of Representatives by hoodlums and thugs.

    “The Nigeria Police Force promptly deployed its personnel to the premises to prevent a breakdown of law and order. Consequently, the police cordoned the area and began screening of all members and visitors alike,” a statement issued on Thursday by the Force Public Relations Officer, Emmanuel Ojukwu, said.

    The statement continued: “In the course of this lawful exercise, Alh. Aminu Tambuwal CFR, arrived the venue with a motley crowd, who broke the cordon, assaulted the police and evaded due process and the police had the duty to restore order and normalcy, using lawful means.

    “The IGP seizes this medium to warn all political actors and their followers to respect constituted authority and due process and to desist from the use of thugs to pursue their agenda.

    “The Nigeria Police shall continually apply all lawful means to prevent a breakdown of law and order in all segments of the society and shall apply the full weight of the law on any political actor who violates the peace and security of the nation.”

    Police withdraw Tambuwal’s security detail

    The Acting- Inspector General of Police, Suleiman Abba, has ordered the withdrawal of security detail attached to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Alhaji Aminu Tambuwal.

    The order is contained in a statement issued on Thursday by the Force Public Relations Officer, Emmanuel Ojukwu.

    The statement reads: “In view of the recent defection by the Right Honourable Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, the Speaker of the House of Representatives of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

    “Having regard to the clear provision of section 68(1) (g) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended, the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has redeployed its personnel attached to his office.

  • Ojukwu’s Estate: judge disqualifies self

    Justice Adebayo Oyebanji of a Lagos High Court, Igbosere, on Thursday disqualified herself from a case brought against the widow of the late Biafran warlord, Chukwuemeka Odimegwu Ojukwu, Bianca and others by one Debe Ojukwu.

    Oyebanji , who said the matter ought not to have followed her to the court, where she was posted by the state Chief Judge, Justice Ayotunde Philips, told parties that it will be re-assigned to another judge.

    The judge made the announcement when the suit was called and the claimant (Debe) stood up to announce his appearance.

    “I have observed that this matter was assigned to this court.

    “It was before the creation of the fast track division. The registrar should not have brought this case to this court.

    “It will go to the fast track because case management conference (CMC) has not commenced. I will only minute on it and then give a date and ask the registrar to take the case file to the office of the assigning judge,” Justice Oyebanji said.

    The judge subsequently adjourned the case to March 3 for mention.

    Joined as defendants in the suit are – Prof.Joseph Ojukwu, Emmanuel Ojukwu, Lotanna Ojukwu, Emeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, Patrick Ojukwu and Mrs. Margarete Nwagbo-Ojukwu.

    The Ojukwus have been enmeshed in legal tussle since the demise of the late Biafran warlord over property he left behind, as well as the claims by Debe Ojukwu that he is a legitimate first son of the deceased.

    Debe, who claimed that the company he administers on behalf of the family sponsored Ojukwu’s burial with about N100 million, stated that the family members deprived him of his right as the first son during his father’s burial.

    Ojukwu: Court strikes out son’s suit against siblings

    A Federal High Court in Lagos on Friday struck out a suit filed by Chief Debe Ojukwu over alleged breach of his fundamental human rights by his siblings.
    The applicant, who averred that he is the eldest son of the late Chief Odimegwu Ojukwu, had filed the suit on October 5, 2012 to enforce his rights.
    The News Agency of Nigeria reports that he sought an order to restrain them from threatening his life and asked for N100 million as exemplary damages.
    Joined in the suit as respondents are – Prof. Joseph Ojukwu, Emmanuel Ojukwu, Lotanna Ojukwu, Bianca Ojukwu, wife of Ojukwu; Patrick Ojukwu, Patricia Ojukwu and Margaret Ojukwu.
    Others are the Inspector General of Police, Assistant Inspector General of Police, Mr. Ibrahim Muktar and Deputy Commissioner of Police in Anambra, Mr. Mike Okoli.
    Delivering his judgment on Friday, Justice Okon Abang struck out the suit on the grounds that the court lacked jurisdiction to entertain it.
    The judge held that the suit was liable to be struck out as it did not follow the procedure.
    “The applicant should not have brought this suit under the Fundamental Rights Enforcement Procedure Rules, but as a proper action.
    “In the circumstance, this court lacks jurisdiction to entertain the suit. The case is accordingly struck out for want of jurisdiction with no order as to cost, I so hold,” Abang said.
    NAN reports that Ojukwu had in an affidavit averred that since his birth as the first son of the late Ojukwu, he had been unfairly treated by his family.
    According to him, the respondents had invited him to come and oversee Ojukwu Transport Company owned by their late father.
    He stated that he managed the company effectively until the death of his father when things began to fall apart for him.
    The applicant said he was suddenly informed by the respondents to hands off the company.
