Uduaghan, DELSUTH perform first successful kidney transplant

Delta State Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan and a medical team at the Delta State University Teaching Hospital (DELSUTH), Oghara yesterday performed the first successful kidney transplant.

The operation involved the replacement of a patient’s two diseased kidneys with one provided by a healthy donor.

Uduaghan, a doctor and other experts performed the operation at the state-of-the-art medical facility, a few months after a successful kneecap and hipbone replacement surgeries were performed.

Speaking with reporters after the operation, which lasted several hours, Uduaghan said: “This is a happy day for me as we are able to provide this service.

“I know we were well prepared for this surgery. We also have a good post surgery team.”

He noted that kidney transplant was still considered a rare feat in the medical field in the country and another major medical breakthrough for the hospital.

Speaking on the plans to cope with heavy patient traffic in the hospital, the governor said he was “planning to expand bed facilities by putting up a 300-bed ward for this hospital.”

He said DELSUTH has entered into a five-year partnership with UT South-Western Medical Centre in Dallas, United States of America to build infrastructure and human capacity in the hospital.

Uduaghan said treatment is subsidised to make it affordable to the indigenes.

“What they will charge here will be lower than what obtains anywhere else. About two years ago, we started subsidising dialysis, bringing it down from N20,000 to N5,000. It is for the indigenes.”

The Chief Medical Director of DELSUTH, Dr. Leslie Akporiaye, said the kidney transplant was an innovation in the hospital, adding that it lasted just a few hours.

“Preparations are on with the provision of facilities, training and observation in Dallas and Oghara by DELSUTH workers.

“This is the beginning of more of such surgeries, which will take place in the hospital,” he added.

A second kidney transplant will be performed at the hospital today.

Uduaghan to journalists: promote national cohesion

Delta State Governor Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan has urged journalists to promote national cohesion and stability.

He spoke yesterday in Asaba at the opening of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Delta State Council Press Week.

Represented by Deputy Governor Prof. Amos Utuama, the governor advised journalists to be wary of doing anything that could destabilise the country.

“I implore every journalist to consider national cohesion, stability and well-being in deciding what to write or air to the public. Let us not, by words or actions, do anything that will destabilise our country by guarding against the antics of rumour mongers, fifth columnists, publicity-seeking individuals and others, who do not wish the nation well,” he said.

According to Uduaghan, the Freedom of Information (FoI) Act should be judiciously used.

He said: “It has to be used for the edification of our society and the sustainable development of our country. The era of publishing to be damned is over. It served its purpose during the fight for freedom under colonial rule. Now, both sides have to serve the interest of the public.”

The governor hailed the journalists working in the state, saying they had helped to “give vent to our policies, programmes and activities.

‘’I appreciate your understanding, patience and, sometimes, bashing. The mixed grill is what it is supposed to be.”

The Chairman, NUJ Delta State Council, Comrade Norbert Chiazor, hailed Governor Uduaghan for being media-friendly.

Delta State Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan has assured of the state’s readiness to ensure early completion of the proposed $26 billion (about N4.15 trillion) industrial gas city at Ogidigben (Escravos) in Warri South-West Local Government.

It was learnt that the project is part of the Federal Government’s effort to end gas flaring in the Niger Delta, through the utilisation of associated gas gathered from oil exploration.

Oil industry experts said the project would also cut back on gas emission and reduce environmental pollution.

The project has generated excitement among the Ijaw, the Itsekiri and the Ilaje, particularly as the multibillion dollar gas project is coming on the heels of the successful completion of the $8 billion Escravos Gas to Liquid project of Chevron Nigeria Ltd.

Governor Uduaghan, who met the three major ethnic groups yesterday, appealed for cooperation.

He said: “I appeal to you (stakeholders) to cooperate with us to ensure that this project is successful. We have done it with the EGTL project, so we already have a template for success. All we have to do is activate the template and ensure this project is delivered on schedule.”

The Nation gathered that the multi-facet gas project would sit on 2,800 hectares complete with a refinery, gas plant fertiliser processing and petrochemical plants.

It will be located near CNL’s EGTL and is to be completed in seven years, during which it will employ over 200,000 skilled, semi-skilled and unskilled workers.

Addressing stakeholders in Warri, yesterday, Governor Uduaghan urged the residents to cooperate with the Federal Government, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and contractors handling the project, to ensure that the project got underway.

He described the project as a blessing to the state, adding that it would help strengthen its economy and provide jobs.

Group Executive Director, Gas and Power, NNPC, Mr. David Ige, said the project was aimed at the utilisation of the nation’s hydrocarbon reserves and expanding the wealth of the country.

He said the project would be driven by the private sector.

Ige, who hailed Governor Uduaghan for his steadfastness towards the project, solicited cooperation so that the project would be delivered on time.

  • Court orders service on Uduaghan, others

Federal High Court in Abuja yesterday ordered that court documents be served on Governors Adams Oshiomhole (Edo), Emmanuel Uduaghan (Delta) and Olusegun Mimiko (Ondo) following the two cases pending against them, President Goodluck Jonathan and others.

The case on which court documents are to be served on Uduaghan seeks to join President Jonathan and some key members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in a contempt suit.

The court ordered the service of processes on Oshiomhole and Mimiko on a case seeking the nullification of the last governorship elections in Edo and Ondo states.

Justice Adamu Bello ordered the service on the three yesterday after hearing two ex-parte applications seeking leave to serve the documents outside jurisdiction.

The applications were filed by the plaintiff in both cases, Bedding Holdings Limited (BHL).

BHL, in the first case, accused President Jonathan and others of unlawful use of its patented ballot boxes for the party’s last special convention.

It filed an application seeking an order joining President Jonathan and 10 others in “the contempt proceedings already commenced by plaintiff/applicant”.

Uduaghan, who was appointed to head the Oil Theft Committee at last month NEC meeting, said that the Committee was working on providing both long and short term strategies.
On the interim measures being taken, he said: “A technical level meeting involving key stakeholders has been held, where concerned agencies including security outfits have made useful submissions, with more submissions expected from other stakeholders, especially from the oil producing states.”
“The Committee has moved to address the issue of the 400, 000 barrels per day production shortfall. The Governors of Bayelsa and Delta have been mandated to meet with the concerned oil majors and the JTF to work out modalities for the effective repair of the Nembe and Trans Niger pipelines which are currently shut.”

According to him, the legal task force, which is to be in force for one year with effect from July, 2013, is to be made up of representatives from the NNPC, the Armed Forces, Civil Defence, Police, SSS and other related agencies.
While prosecution of established cases will continue and all convictions to be given wide publicity, he said that the members of the task force would be announced by the AGF on Monday 22 July, 2013.
“The Council commended the efforts of the Committee and further urged it to ensure that the bid to repair the shut pipelines is achieved within the targeted period of six to eight weeks.” He stated

  • Uduaghan woos churches on good governance

Delta State Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan has urged religious institutions to help foster good governance in Nigeria, saying the country’s quest for people-oriented leadership must not be left in the hands of political leaders alone.

Uduaghan, who identified religious institutions as veritable organs in the total transformation of Nigeria, said unless religious leaders begin to see political leadership as an area that requires collective effort, the country’s renewed attempts at providing people-oriented government would elude it.

Delivering a keynote address through Mrs. Gloria Okolugbo, Delta State Commissioner, Directorate for Multi-lateral Relations in Abuja Office, at the National Leadership Conference of the Methodist Cathedral Church, Abuja, Uduaghan challenged the church in particular to provide points for search for good governance.

The governor, whose address centred on leadership and good governance, said it was in recognition of the need to provide purposeful leadership that his administration was concentrating on priority areas.

He said the issue of leadership and good governance was paramount in the life of his administration, saying this has been demonstrated in several areas since he assumed duty.

He particularly mentioned the part he has played since flood ravaged the state.

“For us as a government, we have not rested on our search to provide good governance for the people. Since thousands of our people were displaced by flood, we have been there with them; we sleep with them, eat with them and share with them. This is leadership by example”, he said.

Uduaghan while noting that his state was worst hit by the flood, said he was consoled in the fact that God, according to the holy bible, would not end the world with flood the second time.

Delivering a paper on a theme: “Integrity and good governance promote peaceful co-existence,” Barrister Oyekola Omowunmi Iyabode, tasked leaders to see good governance as a service to the growth and development of the community.

He enjoined those who find themselves in positions of authority to shun corruption just as he said they must see integrity and moral principles key ingredients that bring about good governance.

“Corruption undermines good governance and fundamentally destroys the integrity of an organization”, he emphasised, adding “corruption will not diminish in the society until government makes all effort and takes necessary steps to increase the integrity of such a society. The incidence of corruption has risen and the peaceful tie among people of different faith, race colour has been greatly hampered”.
