  • Emmanuel swears in caretaker committees

Akwa Ibom State Governor Udom Gabriel Emmanuel yesterday inaugurated caretaker committees for the 31 local government areas.

This followed last week’s expiration of the tenure of the elected local government officers.

The House of Assembly had declared that the tenure of the elected officers expired on July 12, which completed the elected officers’ three-year tenure.

The Assembly, on July 13, amended the Local Government (Administration) Law, thereby empowering the governor to swear in transition committees for the councils.

Emmanuel swore in the 31 caretaker chairmen with a warning that they must adhere to the oaths of their offices and those of allegiance.

The governor urged the chairmen to implement the objectives of local government administration, as enshrined in the Constitution.

These include mobilising human and material resources in their areas and providing a two-way communication between local communities, their representatives, state and Federal governments.

He reminded the chairmen that local governments were expected to serve as catalyst for development at the grassroots level.

  • Why I want to be governor, by Emmanuel

Why I want to be governor, by Emmanuel

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in Akwa Ibom State, Udom Gabriel Emmanuel, has reiterated his desire to govern the state with the fear of God if elected into office. He also pledged to harness his connections in the international business community to create wealth for the state.

Udom gave the assurances yesterday at an interactive session with the youths of Uyo Catholic Diocese at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Ifiayong Usuk in Uruan Local Government Area.

The governorship hopeful was accompanied to the session by his running mate, Moses Ekpo; Director General of his campaign, Otuekong Idongesit Nkanga; the state ALGON Chairman, Obong Nse Ntuen; Eket Senatorial Candidate, Chief Nelson Effiong; state TAN coordinator, Ufot Ebong; BOT Chairman of Transformation Initiative, Akparawa Ephraim Inyang and other dignitaries.

The PDP standard bearer said he was an ambassador of Christianity and so, would not go below prescribed standards in the discharge of his duties as governor from May 29.

He pledged that his administration would target jobs and  employments for youths of the state.

He said: “God did not give me the connections to pay my children’s school fees alone; he did not bless me with the experiences for me to cater for my family’s needs alone. I believe it was for the purpose of harnessing it to serve the needs of our people”.

Quoting several scriptural passages, the candidate charged the youths to live exemplary lives and to stand by the truth in taking decisions about their state and the future.

Akwa Ibom: Emmanuel receives church’s endorsement

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in Akwa Ibom State, Mr Udom Emmanuel, sought divine blessings on Sunday, with the formal dedication of the project to the hand of God.

The event, which took place at the Qua Iboe Church, Uyo, the state capital, attracted a large crowd of PDP faithful, the business and political class, various political and socio-cultural groups, who came to show solidarity to the governorship candidate.

Addressing the congregation, Deacon Udom Emmanuel said he did not come to the church to campaign, but led his team to consult and seek Divine blessings in view of the assignments before him.

His words: “We did not come to campaign because we know that God is with us, and as Christians we must always invite Him to guide us in our aspirations.”

Drawing inspiration from Psalm 37:5, which says: “‘Commit your way to the Lord, trust also in Him and He shall bring it to pass,”  the governorship candidate admonished everyone to always seek the consent of God in their affairs.

He assured that as a firm believer in God’s precepts, he was of the belief that without the Divine backing, one’s aspiration is in vain.

The governorship candidate, who used the occasion to urge all Christians in the state to support God-fearing leaders through the PDP, noted that the party was the only one that placed God at the centre of its activities.

He acknowledged the prayers of Christians in the state, through their various leaders, saying there is nothing like denominational barriers among Christians in the state, because they all put their trust in God through Jesus Christ.

Earlier, the Director-General of the Udom Emmanuel Campaign Council, Otuekong Idongesit Nkanga, enjoined Christian faithful to support the emergence of Mr Emmanuel, adding that he is a God-fearing leader with requisite managerial and intellectual capacity to lead the state.

Nkanga who traced leadership of godly men from biblical times, called on Akwa Ibom people to unite and elect Emmanuel, whom he described as a man after God’s heart.

The high point of the occasion was the prayer of dedication on all PDP candidates by the Rev. Ime Usoroh and Elder Okokon Nkan.

Akwa Ibom PDP chair: Emmanuel has united us

The presentation of the governorship flag to Akwa Ibom State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate, Mr Udom Emmanuel, by the party’s leadership in Lagos has been described as the unifying factor for the party.

Akwa Ibom PDP Chairman Obong Paul Ekpo spoke at the weekend in Uyo, the state capital, when he addressed party supporters at the Akwa Ibom International Airport to welcome Emmanuel and his entourage from Lagos.

Ekpo said: “The presentation of the governorship flag to Emmanuel has finally laid to rest the speculations and misinformation that had pervaded the political sphere. I am impressed with this turnout of our people to welcome us. This is a demonstration of the fact that Emmanuel is the best for Akwa Ibom. He is the face of the new Akwa Ibom…”

  • Akwa Ibom: Not yet uhuru for Emmanuel

Akwa Ibom: Not yet uhuru for Emmanuel

An ex parte order and a petition appear to have become obstacles in the quest of former Akwa Ibom State Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Mr Udom Emmanuel, to fly the flag of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in next February’s elections, writes OLUKOREDE YISHAU.

When names of governorship candidates are submitted by political parties to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) later this week, the name of Udom Emmanuel, former Akwa Ibom State Secretary to the State Government (SSG), is bound to be missing, unless the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chairman Adamu Mu’azu does not mind being jailed for contempt of court. Last Thursday, Justice Y. Halilu of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) restrained Mu’azu and the PDP from submitting Emmanuel’s name or the name of any other person as the winner of the PDP governorship primary in Akwa Ibom State. After giving the order, Justice Halilu adjourned the substantive suit till January 5, 2015 because of the Christmas and New Year break.

Until then, the propriety or otherwise of the December 8 primary in which Emmanuel was declared winner is suspect.

The kernel of the suit filed by a PDP chieftain and governorship aspirant, Ime Effiong Ekanem, is also the subject of a petition by the 22 PDP governorship aspirants to Mua’zu and the PDP leadership. The petition dated December 9 described the primary, which produced Emmanuel, though broadcast live on television, as a “sham” and “scam”.

In the petition, the aspirants, which include two men who served Governor Godswill Akpabio as deputy, Nsima Ekere and Patrick Ekpotu, said the primary violated the party’s rule on accreditation of delegates. They said no delegate was accredited at the venue of the primary, adding that they were told by the chairman of the Electoral Panel that the accreditation of delegates was done at the Government House, where the delegates were conveyed in buses to the venue of the poll. They alleged that unqualified persons were smuggled into the venue as delegates, thus rubbishing the process. The non-accreditation of delegates, they said, broke the 19th paragraph of the Electoral guidelines.

The aggrieved men said the delegates’ list was contrived because there was no proper election of delegates from the ward level on November 1.

Another issue the aggrieved have against Emmanuel’s emergence is that delegates were not given ballot papers in public glare to vote during the election. They said the delegates arrived the venue with already marked ballot papers and only deposited them in the boxes when it was time to vote.  They also alleged that their agents were not accredited to be part of the exercise. Their prayer to the court and the party is simple: cancel the exercise.

They said: “It is our prayer that the fraudulent exercise, herein complained of, be nullified for the sake of the party’s credibility and a transparent process be deployed for the emergence of a gubernatorial candidate for the Peoples Democratic Party in Akwa Ibom State.

“The enormity of a combination of the above irregularities on the entire Gubernatorial Primary Election and the ultimate fortunes of the party in  general election cannot be over emphasized. We believe that your intervention , can save us from the avoidable cataclysm we are won’t to face if this fraud is condoned.”

Instituting a court case after petitioning the party and the Appeal Panel, said a source, was borne out of their belief that they might not get justice from the party, which agreed with Akpabio to zone the governorship to Eket when elders such as former Governor Victor Attah and former Minister Don Etiebet were calling for open contest.

The group, which has visited the Wadata House headquarter of the party severally to register their grievances, said they have only received “minimal attention” from the party’s leadership. This, said Ekanem, was why he headed for the court, adding that the PDP has not found it necessary to address their grievances with the urgency it requires given the time limit allowed by the Electoral Act for candidates to be forwarded to INEC.

He said: “I cannot allow the will of majority of Akwa Ibom people to be swept under the carpet as if they do no matter. Democracy is the government of the people by the people. Therefore, we will not allow a few people to impose their will against the interest and the overall good of the people.

“It is the will of the good people of Akwa Ibom that the process of electing their leaders must be transparent, credible and civil. That was not what was witnessed on December 8 in Uyo. We say no to a system that attempts to subvert the will of the people. This struggle is not our personal struggle but that of every Nigerian who believes in democracy, in the purity of its meaning and essence.”

Akpabio has continued to insist the process which produced Emmanuel was transparent. He congratulated the Chairman of the Electoral Panel of PDP, Mr. Bola Ayebowale and members of the PDP for a successful conduct of the primaries, adding that Emmanuel’s victory was assured.

The governor said more than 99 per cent of PDP faithful in the state came out to vote, stressing that the state would do the same by giving President Goodluck Jonathan their full support in 2015. Akpabio added that the transparency of the election was an indication that peace thrives in the state.

Emmanuel said the people have ushered him into the next level, thanking Akpabio and the people for coming out en-mass to support him. He lauded the PDP for the peaceful conduct of the primary.

Oyebowale also said the process was transparent, explaining that PDP believes in a level-playing ground for all aspirants.

By their suit and petition, the aspirants have queried the process Oyebowale, Akpabio and Emmanuel have spoken so glowingly about. Will the court agree with them? That will be known on January 5. But until then and as a result of the injunction, the PDP cannot present a valid candidate from Akwa Ibom State to INEC. Doing so will mean risking having Mua’zu committed to the prison.

The waiting game has started and while many will be busy enjoying the Christmas and New Year break, the aggrieved aspirants and the governor’s camp will be busy perfecting how to convince the judge to look their way.

  • Akwa Ibom 2015: Group hails Emmanuel’s emergence

Akwa Ibom 2015: Group hails Emmanuel’s emergence

A socio-political group, the Akwa Ibom Consolidation Initiative, has hailed the election of Mr. Udom Emmanuel as the flag bearer of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the Akwa Ibom governorship race, saying it is a reflection of the wish of the people. Emmanuel is the immediate past Secretary to the Akwa Ibom State Government.

In a press statement issued in Lagos, the group’s coordinator, Mr. Udoh Ekwere noted that the outcome of the primaries, which took place at the Uyo township stadium, is a reflection of the wishes of the people.

Emmanuel polled 1,201 votes and was declared winner by the chairman of the election panel, Bola Oyebowale.

Ekwere noted that as a technocrat with leadership and managerial skills, Emmanuel is unarguably the best candidate to sustain the tempo of developmental strides of Governor Godswill Akpabio in the state.

“We believe that the choice of Udom Emmanuel by the Akwa Ibom PDP delegates is indeed in line with the wishes of the people. Emmanuel is a technocrat and we believe that he is capable of continuing the good work of our out-going governor,” he said.

Ekwere appealed to the aspirants who lost at the primaries to work together with the PDP flag bearer to ensure the success of the party in next year’s election.

  • Akwa Ibom: Ibibio elders back Emmanuel for governor

Akwa Ibom: Ibibio elders back Emmanuel for governor

A group, the Ibibio Elders’ Fo-rum, has endorsed the Secretary to the Akwa Ibom State Government (SSG), Mr. Udom Emmanuel, for next year’s governorship election.

The forum said the aspirant will defend the  growth, unity and development of the state.

The forum is made up of elders from Ibibioland. It explained that Emmanuel is a humble and committed administrator.

When some of the elders visited the SSG in his office at Uyo, the state capital, they urged him to declare his intention to run for the office.

They said Emmanuel has lived up to expectation as a technocrat before he was appointed as the SSG.

Hailing his patriotism, they said: “those who got jobs through Emmanuel’s assistance have established themselves to the envy of their contemporaries in other states.”

Noting that Emmanuel is the only Ibibio son on the board of African Finance Corporation and the highest ranking Akwa Ibom son in the financial sector, they wondered “why Akwa Ibom should go to war with a mere recruit when they have a ‘General”

Former Minister of Lands and Housing Chief Nduese Essien said the SSG will be a worthy successor to Governor Godswill Akpabio.   He said: “It is on this basis that the entire Ibibio elders of Akwa Ibom State have realized that we need someone like Udom Emmanuel as Governor, come 2015, because he is the right choice and truly deserves the seat.”

The Chairman of the Forum, Dr Okon Uko, decried the  falsehood,  propaganda, blackmail and the “pull him down syndrome” that have characterised politics in Ibibioland.

Uko extolled the sterling qualities of the SSG, saying that he will be a good governor.

  • Where is Emmanuel?

A two-year relationship between a U.K-based Nigerian, Emmanuel, and a Caribbean lady which was supposed to end in marriage in June this year has ended abruptly with the whereabouts of the prospective groom unknown after a visit to the country. Lekan Otufodunrin reports

Initially it was supposed to be a case of a fiancée missing in transit. Rachael from a Caribbean Island whose Nigerian fiancée, one Emmanuel Adebanjo, travelled home to Nigeria from his United Kingdom base to see his mother suddenly became incommunicado.

The last time she heard from Emmanuel who she usually communicated with every day before his sudden disappearance was in February. All her attempts to contact Emmanuel who she was supposed to get married to in June this year after two years of courtship failed. “I had a phone number for which just rings without anyone responding,” she recalls.

Just when she began to panic about Emmanuel’s fate, she started getting messages from some “relatives” of her husband to be claiming that Emmanuel was involved in an accident a day after he arrived Nigeria and he was the sole survivor.

The “cousins” refused to give Rachael the name of the hospital where Emmanuel was being treated and other information to locate or speak with him because they said she was not yet known to the family. They claimed they were trying to raise money for Emmanuel’s treatment after selling some of his property and asked how Rachael was willing to assist them.

In an email to ST the cousins wrote: “Hello madam, you have to be patient until we can get back to you… We have not told his mother about what happened to Emmanuel because she will be so devastated with shock and only close family members are informed.

“We are making arrangement for him to be flown back to the UK, but the financial side of it is yet to be concluded. You have not visited Nigeria before, hence no member of the family knows nor ever seen you before. So we cannot release him to your care. Our hope lies on the fact that the moment he is able to get better, we will ensure he speak with you and he will decide if he will come direct to you or to the UK. Have a blessed week and God bless you. Kunle.”

Although she had reasons to suspect that the cousins may be scammers, she found it difficult to believe that Emmanuel could be part of the scheme.

“I know him well. He has nothing to gain by trying to scam me because he knows I am not a rich person”

In her search for information on Emmanuel’s whereabouts, Rachael reached out on the phone to someone he had introduced to her as an uncle in Nigeria. In their first telephone conversation, the uncle said he had not heard from Emmanuel for some time and was not aware if he was involved in any accident since he is not sure he was in Nigeria.

The only home address ST had for Emmanuel in Nigeria, was 41-43, Ashabi Cole, Agidingbi Road, Ikeja, Lagos which turned out not to be none existing. The street was none residential.

Much later when Rachael told the uncle she was going to hire a private investigator to fish out Emmanuel, he called the following day to say that Emmanuel was in the UK and had an accident, was not working, had no job and was embarrassed of his situation and could not face her.

With the hide and seek now over and Emmanuel still incommunicado, Rachael, family members and friends are shocked at the turn of events.

“This is a man who was coming back and forth to our country over a period of two years- something is still amiss to me here- while here he met my family, friends, boss, church priest, etc helped my children paint the house, and more- he was a very mild mannered, polite, calm, but always on the computer – I wonder if his resume was in fact legit- it was very long and detailed- should have had a job easily with that.

“Everyone of my friends are shocked, the men who met him tell me they are depressed because they all can’t believe it. It is not a regular thing for us here to run into this type of thing or people. All I can say that he is lucky my father is not alive. He had a lot of contacts. I am not sure if Emmanuel would have been able to hide from him,” Rechael said.

Rachael and Emmanuel had known each other through a Nigerian for about two years and he usually visits the Island from his UK base staying about a month each time.

According to Rachael, “when he came here it was not to do anything, but to get to know one another better- you cannot have a long distance relationship with someone unless someone goes to visit the other person often before taking it to the next step.

“I thought it better for him to come here around my people to check him out – and they all thought he was a great person – who knows – so when he came here we went to the beach swimming, concerts, movies, church, family get – together, he even went to my class to help me get ready for the beginning of the school year in September – I mean he just fit in with everyone.”

For now there has been no word from Emmanuel or his uncle and cousin.

“I have not heard a peep from anyone – but I can see someone coming and going off line on Yahoo Messenger, but they have not made any further contact and neither have I. It is almost as if he has dropped off the face of the earth- or so he wants me to think.”

The chain of events still seems like a bad dream for Rachael, but she is glad she didn’t get married to Emmanuel before finding out about his true identity.

“We live and learn – but suppose we had married? He would then have had access to much more than he would by this act, so I appreciate God spared me that. Always look for the silver lining in any situation,” Rachael said.
