    Sales rep docked for allegedly stealing employer’s N7.8m

    A 32-year-old former sales representative, Bashiru Olatunji, was on Monday dragged before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos, for alleged theft.

    The defendant is standing trial before Magistrate E. Kubeinje, on a one-count charge of stealing.

    He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

    The prosecutor, DSP Kehinde Ajayi, told the court that the defendant committed the offence between January and November at Kosoko Street, Ojodu Berger, Lagos State.

    She alleged that the defendant, while still acting as a sales representative to his employer, one Deke Super Store located at Ojodu Berger, stole the total sum of N7, 809, 000.

    The money is said to be the property of his employer.

    The prosecutor said investigations revealed that the defendant had been stealing money from the company for a long time but was later apprehended and detained by the police.

    She said the offence contravened the provisions of section 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The court granted the defendant bail in the sum of N500, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

    Kubeinje ordered that the sureties must be gainfully employed with proof of tax payments and verification and that one of them must be a blood relative.

    She adjourned the case until Dec. 19 for trial. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

  • Hotel staff docked over alleged theft of employer’s money

    A 21-year-old man, Sodiq Akinlade, was on Thursday brought before an Abeokuta Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing N253, 750 from his employer.

    Akinlade, an employee with Phonix Hotel, Ibara Housing Estate, Abeokuta, is facing trial is facing a three-count charge bordering on stealing and unlawful conversion.

    Police prosecutor, Inspector Olubisi Lawrence, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on February 3 at about 5.45p.m at the Phonix Hotel in Ibara Housing Estate, Abeokuta.

    Lawrence said that the defendant, with intent to defraud the hotel, stole N83, 750 and N170, 000 totalling N253, 750, belonging to Matanmi Owolabi.

    He said Akinlade converted the stolen money to his personal use.

    According to him, the offence committed contravened Sections 383(1), 390(6) and 516 of the Criminal Code Laws of Ogun State 2006.

    The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

    The Magistrate, Mrs Sam Obaleye, granted the defendant bail of N50, 000 with two responsible sureties in like sum.

    Obaleye said that the sureties must reside within the court jurisdictions and show evidence of tax payment to the Ogun Government.

    She adjourned the case until Feb. 25 for hearing.

  • Driver jailed for stealing employer’s car

    A Grade 1 Area Court in Kubwa, FCT, yesterday sentenced a 28-year-old driver, Peter John, to three months’ imprisonment for stealing his employer’s car.

    The convict, who lives at Gbazango, Kubwa, Abuja, was convicted for theft.

    The judge, Mohammed Marafa, however, gave the convict an option of N10,000 fine.

    He said although the convict was a first offender, he deserved to be punished, warning him to desist from crime.

    Marafa ordered that the car be released to the complainant, Christopher Josephine.

    The prosecutor, John Okpa, told the court Josephine of Pent Estate, Kubwa, reported the matter at Kubwa Police Station on July 12.

    He said the complainant employed John as a driver and entrusted her Toyota Camry car, valued at N800, 000 to him to use in taking her children to school.

    Okpa said John stole the car, adding that it was recovered from him by the police at Ankpa in Kogi State.

    He said the offence contravened Section 289 of the Penal Code.

    John pleaded guilty and begged for leniency, saying he lost his father and brother at the time he stole the car.

    He said he has a wife and children, who depend on him.

  • Five arraigned for ‘theft of employer’s iron rods’

    The police have arraigned five persons at an Ota Magistrates’ Court in Ogun State for allegedly stealing their employer’s iron rods valued at N763,400 and other items.

    Those arraigned are Olorunwa Abiodun, 26; James Nentui, 39; Bamidele Talabi, 33; Ibrahim Agbontafara, 40; and Tijani Sulaimon, 35.

    The accused, whose addresses are unknown, are facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.

    The prosecutor, Chudu Gbedi, told the court that the accused and others still at large, committed the offences on August 7 at Metropolitan, Dalemo, Ota.

    He said the accused and their accomplices, all employees of Vino Furniture Product Ltd, the complainant, conspired to steal 54 pieces of iron rods and other valuable items.

    The prosecutor said the offences contravened sections 390(6) and 516) of the Criminal Code Vol.1, Laws of Ogun, 2006.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty. Senior Magistrate S. O. Banwo granted bail to each of the accused persons at N350,000 with two sureties in like sum.

    Banwo said the sureties must live within the court’s jurisdiction and swear to an affidavit of means.

    He ordered the sureties to submit four recent passport photographs to the court and show evidence of tax payment from the Ogun State government.

    Banwo adjourned the case till September 14 for hearing.

    The police in Lagos have arrested the guard who allegedly killed his employer, Mabel Okafor, 50, at J68B, Close 9, Victoria Garden City (VGC) on August 17.

    The suspect, Tanko Abdulateef, 22, was tracked to Bali in Taraba state and arrested.

    He was said to have stabbed Okafor, a Bureau De Change (BDC) operator on her stomach, ripped it open and left her to die following her alleged refusal to increase his salary.

    The suspect was alleged to have threatened to deal with the woman, an allegation that led to his becoming the major suspect in her murder. It was gathered that the police suspected him following the disappearance of the deceased’s phones, valuables as well as the guard.

    It was learnt that crack policemen from the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) went to Taraba in search of the suspect after the deceased’s phones were tracked to the state.

    It was gathered that the police recovered three phones, trinket and a lot of clothes all belonging to the woman.

    According to a police source, the suspect has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID) Panti-Yaba.

    “The woman had a House guard but the guard was nowhere to be found. The body of the victim was examined and it was noticed that she was stabbed in the stomach and her stomach ripped open.

    “She was moved over to the mortuary and the policemen from the division did necessary scene of crime investigations they were supposed to do, while the matter was transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

    Contacted, the command’s spokesperson, Dolapo Badmos, a Superintendent of Police (SP) said: “The Commissioner of Police called on the Decoy Team of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) in charge of tracking and tasked them to deal with the matter. The team swung into operation and after about one week of serious work on the matter, they were able to identify the suspect to be the house guard of the victim and they tracked him to Bali in Taraba State.

    “After about three days in Bali, they were able to recover some of the phones stolen from the victim before eventually arresting the suspect where he was hiding.

    “There is no escape route for criminals in Lagos State. Any crime committed in Lagos will be unravelled. If you commit a crime in Lagos and run to anywhere in Nigeria, the Police in Lagos will come after you,” she said.
