The Oshodi-Isolo Local Government, Ejigbo, and Isolo Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) have launched an empowerment programme aimed at boosting small businesses and providing relief during the festive season.

The initiative saw the distribution of deep freezers, sewing machines, and other essential tools to empower women

The programme carefully selected, ensured fair representation of all groups, including artisans, and religious communities. Among the recipients were women striving to expand their small businesses, widows, and families in need of support to secure sustainable livelihoods.

Wife of the Chairman of Ejigbo LCDA, Alhaja Fatima Bello, shared the inspiration behind the initiative, which was first introduced in 2017.

She said: “Instead of distributing goody bags, we thought of empowering women and giving back to society. Empowering a woman is akin to building a nation.”

Alhaja Bello urged the beneficiaries to use the tools productively, emphasising that the resources were meant for long-term benefit.

“We plead with them to use these tools to improve their families’ lives. This is about creating opportunities for sustainable livelihoods. We’ve encouraged them to make good use of the items to generate income and bring relief to their families,” she added.

Chairman of Isolo LCDA, Adebayo Olasoju, praised the collaborative nature of the programme, highlighting the unity between the three councils.

“We want the beneficiaries to use these items judiciously to improve their lives,” he said.

Wife of the Chairman of Oshodi-Isolo LGA, Fadekemi Oloyede, said beneficiaries were chosen ward by ward based on their specific needs.

“We provided freezers, sewing machines, and goods to hawkers, ensuring they have what they need to support their families. This festive period is the perfect time to give back,” she said.

Otunba Kehinde Oloyede Al-Marouf, Chairman of Oshodi-Isolo LCDA, emphasised the significance of empowering women and widows.

A beneficiary, Mrs. Adeshina Fausat, thanked the organisers for their support.

“I’m so happy because ever since I started politics, I’ve never received anything like this before. Their hands will continue to go higher. May they never experience hunger, and may God continue to elevate them,” she said.

  • ‘Why government, church must empower women’

Senior Pastor Fountain of Life Church, Pastor Taiwo Odukoya, spoke with Omolara Akintoye on the Discovery for women outreach he founded over 20 years ago, which has become a rallying point for the empowerment of women. Excerpts:

What do you have to say about politics in the nation?

Politics today is fine at least we see more people getting interested, including the youth and the women. They may not make marks now but the interest is building. I believe we are in a positive direction of course.

Then another thing is that we need to pray for our politicians and that there will be unity in Nigeria. That it does not matter who gets there but the fear of God and love of brethren should be uppermost in their minds. If we don’t see these two qualities in a man or woman, then they are not qualified to govern us.

What should be the role of women in nation building?

When your home is stable then the nation is stable. But when homes are not stable, there will be problems. There is no future because they will raise vagabonds so the women must be equipped. Yes I’m interested in my children. I stay with them and I oversee what they do.

But much more, my wife and I could remember when our children were growing up. Some were trained here and some abroad. I’ll call them once a week but my wife (of blessed memory) will call them every day. So most of the things I didn’t know about them she knew everything.

We must educate the women. Mind you a woman that is not educated can only take the child as far as she has.

What inspired the discovery for women outreach?

First, it was an inspiration. Then second, while I was growing up I saw the way my father handled my mother. They didn’t have much and they were not also highly educated but they were able to complement each other.

My mother was such a strong woman. She put her hands into everything that could sustain the home while my father went to work. Then I asked myself what if the two were better educated?

So I made up my mind to put in my very best to sustain my marriage. That is why if you could recall my late wife, not only was she empowered, she also empowered others.

Even my current wife is doing similar things and my daughter as well. So we have quite a number of women in the church who are very strong. I love to see strong women.

What is Discovery for Women all about?

It has been ongoing: It is aimed at encouraging women, reminding them of the reasons for their existence. A woman is created to be a helpmate for man. So the woman was created adequately to provide the support that the man needs and to have dominion here on earth.

Even the United Nations has realised that women are not being given the needed attention. You want to change the society, you want to stabilise the economy, then educate the woman because that will in turn educate their children as well as nurturing their children.

So that is why we give a lot of attention to the women. What we do is to help them be the best they can be, supporting humanity and making humanity to do what God has called us to do here on earth.

What will be different with this year’s edition?

This rally is tagged New Possibilities: Never believe that because your life is defined by ebbs and flows and usually when you get to the ebbs there is tendency for you to get stuck. But the good news is that you don’t have to get stuck, you can have a continuous flow in Christ.

So we want to encourage people that if you experience setbacks, disappointment or things are not measuring up as planned, this usually truncates a lot of people’s dreams and drive for the future. We don’t want that for our women, even though they suffer setbacks. Ours is to encourage and equip them adequately with all that they need to know.

At the end of the programme what kind of women do you expect to see?

We expect to see women who will rise above challenges of the moment, not just rising above the challenges but also carrying the children along and community as well. Take for instance Rwanda, in the beginning of the genocide it is amazing to discover that it was the women who decided that they with revive their country.

For the first time they have a National Assembly dominated by women and today talk of development and progress in Africa, you want to point to Rwanda. That is what women are created for: fill in where there are gaps, help the man to realise his stands again to forge ahead. So the man goes fighting, the woman stays back to stabilise things. So the woman is a true help meet.

What Nigeria has to do is go give her people proper education. In the North, especially the women otherwise the problem that is perennial in North will persist. Our women need proper education.

Take for instance where villages were attacked by terrorists in the North. The men go to fight once they are gone but the women are left behind with the children. You want to preserve posterity, want to project into the future, develop and advance, empower the woman.

Every woman should be empowered. She should be able to stand for herself and by herself before she even gets married. So when she is married, she is empowered in all areas, submitting to her husband. The two are one and they have a formidable front.

Then you can imagine the future of their products and their children. Unlike now that with the exception of very few of them, most Nigerian women are just subservient, which is very bad. They are being used as baby factories but when a woman is educated they will know that they are not baby- making machines.

She has her life and she has her future. These are the kinds of teachings that we give them in the course of the programme. Take hold of yours from a biblical point of view. Deborah, for instance, when the nation had completely lost direction, Deborah stood up and began to lead her people. So you begin to understand why God says a man needs a true helpmeet.

Yes the man needs a helper but any plan for the men as well?

Oh yes we have ‘Discovery for Men’ and our first rally for this year is being held this March. We have been running this programme for over 20 years. Yes it is important that while you are talking to the women, we also need to talk to our men as well.

As a matter of fact  we have two rallies which will be organised in the church, then we are taking it to the communities to encourage men who are already trained, to rise up and nurture other men. Men needs to be encouraged because they get easily discouraged much more than women.

What is the church doing to ensure that government empowers women as well?

Well, we do our best in the sense that we advertise our programmes and also collaborate with government as much as possible. For instance, we have a foundation where we reach out to young girls that are battered and abused.

In fact, most of them were sent to us from Alausa, here in Lagos. Also we have the Fountain Initiative, where we empower women in Business. We also take off men, women and children under the bridge to empower them and reunite them with their family members.

Today we have success stories of many of them that have graduated from the universities through the church scholarship programme and some are still in school.

We also partner with UNESCO and through the Lagos State government we go to prisons, providing men and women with advocacy programme for them not to lose hope while in prison and when they come out of prison, some of them come back to us and we do all we could to re-integrate them properly into the society by empowering them all round.

  • Anniversary: Group to empower women

We started Women in Successful Careers (WISCAR) to empower women by providing learning and professional guidelines,” its founder, Amina Oyagbola has said.

Oyagbola, who spoke during the organisation’s 10th anniversary at the Shell Hall of MUSON Centre in Lagos, explained that the non-profit organisation was out to bridge the gap in mentorship and women advocacy in leadership.

“We want to ensure equal opportunity for women to contribute to the growth and development of the nation. We are celebrating this anniversary by showcasing pioneering and successful women in various sectors of the economy and to teach the younger women what we have done differently and how we did it to reach the zenith of our careers even in the male dominated sectors of the economy,” she said.

Oyagbola said WISCAR has been at the forefront of advancing the course of women in the country through its strategic mentoring and leadership.

“We have helped to develop thousands of young and aspiring women through our trainings, seminars, workshops, and mentorship programmes, providing competency-based development for personal mastery and overall workplace effectiveness,” she said.

Chairperson, Alliance for Affordable Internet and former Minister of Communication Technology, Omobola Johnson, said: “It is impressive to see that this initiative is accelerating women’s movement up the corporate ladder and also encouraging young females to pursue their career path. One of the ways to accelerate women’s career is by providing equal opportunities for women and building capacity in various career paths, which is what WISCAR advocates for.”

Lagos State Deputy Governor Dr. Idiat Adebule said it is heart-warming to know that WISCAR has consistently remained a voice for women in the corporate world.

According to her, there is the need to focus greater attention on building the capacity of women for them to be able to contribute their full potentials to the process of moving the nation forward.

TAWN’s Convener Mrs Gift Martins said the NGO will ensure women are given a voice in Africa.

She urged women to express their gifts and talents, and not be held down by any form of discrimination.

“Our aim is to focus on women empowerment, advocacy, education and financial support to start business. We would be supporting each other to succeed through networking and interaction,” she said.

Our demand to the men is that we want inclusion, we want our voice to be heard, and we want to be carried along. We stand against injustice and violence against women,” she added.

She called for cultural and religious reorientation among men, noting that culture and religion has been used to oppress women.

  • ‘We’ll empower women, youths’

    ‘We’ll empower women, youths’

In line with the Federal Government’s resolve to alleviate the suffering of the people through sound and people-oriented policies and programmes, the President of the Zion Assembly of Christ for All Nations, the Most Rev. Apostle Samuel Olawumi Ayodele, has promised to empower women and offer scholarships to students in the fold and other qualified Nigerians. This, according to him, will address the economic and educational challenges of its members. He added that “by so doing, they will be encouraged to serve God and humanity justly.’’

Apostle Ayodele stated this after his inauguration as the President of the Zion Assembly of Christ for All Nations at Igbokoda in Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State.

He said for effective administration of Zion Assembly, a group of 200 independent Zion churches, four departments had been created. These, he said, include Theology/Evangelical Department; Children and Women Department; Youth Department, Education and Governmental Affairs Department.

Apostle Ayodele, who was ordained a minister in 1959, said Zion churches had been operating under different   denominations and leaders before now but the Holy Spirit has called for a unity of purpose where they will now operate under one umbrella with one voice to address spiritual and social issues. When this is done, white garment churches of Zion stock will be more respected.

On what the church can do to cushion the effects of the harsh economic conditions on members, Apostle Ayodele said: “We are quite aware of this and that is why we are creating jobs through our co-operative societies and micro-credit schemes to engage our women and men. Our skills acquisition programmes are there to lend helping hands to the jobless so that they can be useful to the society. Education is vital to us, that is why we are pooling our resources to establish scholarship schemes for our children in both secondary schools and higher institutions of learning.”

On why this relationship is just coming at this time, he said: “God’s time is the best. As He has power over the affairs of men, He specifically directed this move. The church as one fold must worship under one shepherd. What is left for me as a privileged servant is to do my utmost based on experiences garnered from several masters before me, including the late Most Rev. Apostles E.L .Ogunfeyimi and Orogbemi, to lead the group aright.

He said  it is the plan of the group to build youths that  are sound  in character and will be  the pride  of the nation, adding “we have religious and social institutions to handle this aspect of our life’’

On members’ participation in politics, he said: “We encourage our members to go into politics and make positive changes. Take it from me; it is a man that fears God that can govern well in the midst of temptations. It is a man that fears God that will not steal public money. It is he that will know that his position is transient and therefore would make life better for the masses. We have all the necessary mechanism to mould the character of our members and equip them for such offices so that they can make the necessary changes and impacts on the lives of the people’’.

He said his group is conscious of the right of the other person, even as it is out for spiritual and social changes and so our focus remains integrity.

  • CBN votes N132b to empower women

CBN votes N132b to empower women

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) voted N132 billion under its Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Fund (MSMEDF), to enhance Women Economic Empowerment.

The amount represents 60 per cent of the N220 billion set aside by the apex Bank under the scheme to address cash flow challenges of financial services in the Micro Finance sub sector.

This was the high point of a meeting in Abuja at the weekend between the Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Hajiya Zainab Maina and the Acting Governor of the CBN, Mrs. Sarah Alade.

Hajiya Maina praised the CBN for taking the lead in promoting financial inclusion of women and other marginalised Nigerians through its various schemes such as the Revised Micro-Finance Policy, the Agricultural Credit Guaranty Scheme, the National Financial Inclusion Strategy (NFIS) and the newly introduced MSMEDF.

She noted that these schemes, if properly harnessed, especially by women at the grassroots, would help to reduce the current exclusion rate of women from financial services of 46.3 to 20.0 per cent by the year 2020, and ensure the much-needed economic empowerment of women.

“The successful integration of women in the financial system will ultimately lead to robust participation of Nigerians in the economy; lead to expansion of available markets and enhanced economic development.

“The Ministry welcomes more initiatives by financial community to encourage access of its target groups to financial services, especially women at the grassroots that contribute greatly to the GDP, and produce more than 70 per cent of agricultural produce,” she added.

The Minister urged the CBN to engage gender-sensitive Micro Finance Banks in the disbursement of the funds to the end beneficiaries so that the generality of women would not be schemed out.

Acting CBN Governor Alade observed that in most cases, women exclusion in financial services was as a result of lack of financial literacy of the women, especially those at the grassroots.

She spoke on the need for the CBN to collaborate with the Ministry on advocacy programmes that will create the necessary awareness towards greater participation of women at the grassroots on the various economic support programmes of the bank, especially the Agricultural Credit Guaranty Scheme meant for small scale farmers.
