She further said that the foundation provides scholarships to girls in African schools who demonstrate verifiable financial need and maintain excellent academic records, so that when they become WAAW fellows, they would in turn give back to their respective communities either by launching a STEM outreach cell or organising outreach initiatives geared at mentoring younger girls.

Echoing similar sentiments, Ms. Frances Sloun, the Operations Director from St. Thomas University Minnesota, said the STEM camp is specifically for girls for the advancement of science and technology in Africa, adding that the girls have been able to explore computer programmes on many different platforms like renewable energy and how it works, climate change and other science-related topics.

The lawmaker representing Rivers Southeast in the National Assembly, Senator Magnus Abe, has empowered no fewer than 60 men, women and youths drawn from the 11 wards in Opobo/Nkoro Local Government.

One thousand one hundred  women from the area, particularly widows, also benefitted from the free wrappers scheme of the wife of the senator, Mrs. Bariyaah Abe, bringing the number of beneficiaries to 9,000.

Abe arrived at Opobo, headquarters of the council, to a heroic reception by a crowd consisting of men, women and youths.

The senator said the empowerment initiated outside his constituency projects was a direct response to the overwhelming support from the people of the district and followed the resolve of elected representatives in Rivers State to ensure personal contact with the electorate.

Abe said: “What is happening in the politics of Nigeria is that there are middlemen, between you and the government. They collect what is meant for you and give you peanuts. I came to tell you that Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi has eliminated political middleman in the politics of Rivers State. He has brought dividends of democracy directly to you and your children.

“The middlemen are in Abuja trying to sell your future. They are promising people that if they bring money, they will deliver Rivers State to them. They are not asking you; they are not talking to you; they are not asking you what you think; they are not asking you what you like; they are not coming to look for you, but they are in Abuja collecting money on your behalf.

“We will together, redefine the politics of Rivers State, and you will be the determinant factor. We will banish middlemen from our politics. By the time we finish with them, they will remain in Abuja.”

A cleric, Ven. Christian John-Jaja, predicted that the All Progressives Congress (APC) would win the governorship election in Opobo/Nkoro and Rivers State next year.

Describing Abe as a leader ordained by God, he hailed the lawmaker for raising his voice against the agents of impunity in the state, even at the risk of his life.

According to him, God would continue to lift him higher for choosing to stand with the people, against oppressors.

The APC Women Leader in Opobo/Nkoro, Felicia Pepple; Chairman, APC, Ward 3, Ibim Ogolo; and a Youth Leader in the state, Bethel Oko-Jaja, said it was the first time in the history of the district that a serving senator would sit with the people.

They pledged their continued support for Governor Amaechi.

  • ECOWAS empowers parliamentarians on value for money

IN its quest to ensure sustainable socio-economic development in the region, the Economic Community of West Africa State (ECOWAS) organised a two-day capacity building workshop for parliamentarians in member countries.

The event which held in Lagos, had international donor agencies, no-state actors among other stakeholders in attendance.

Tagged: ‘Value For Money (VFM), it featured on accountability and sustainability in the social sectors, interface and discussions, plenary session to mention just a few.

Justifying the need for the workshop, the ECOWAS Secretary General, Cheikh Abdel Kader Dansoko, ECOWAS Parliament representative, Jacob AmutaOnogwu, at separate discussion said that the objective of the forum was to among other things remove the bottlenecks and constrains militating against effective use of resources in member countries.

The objective of the forum, they contended aligns with the ECOWAS Parliament’s 2011-2015 strategic plan.

According to the duo, since 2008, after the global recession in most developed countries, and the attendant rippled effect of the recession took its toll on many developing countries especially in Africa which depend largely of aids and donor from the west, thus, there was a need for a paradigm shift in order to ensure socio-economic and sustainable development in the region.

Shedding more light on what informed the initiative, Onogwu said it is also “The commitment of the African Development Bank to improve governance and accountability in social spending and hence, to an improvement in the living standards of the people of Africa.”

Continuing, Onogwu said despite progress in human development indicators, as well as forthcoming funding in recent years, it is disheartening to note that “increased spending for health and education alone does not automatically produce positive outcomes. Rather, ensuring efficiency of the investments, and understanding the issues that affect the transformation of inputs into concrete development outcomes and implementing well-articulated strategies is what can improve the situation.”

He however, suggested that ECOWAS Parliament and AfDB should explore further “the possibilities of partnering in implementing capacity-building programmes on value for money for ministries, parliamentarians and civil society organisations.”

He recalled that “parliaments also have the power of the purse and the mandate to scrutinize the utilization of public finances and ensure financial accountability.”

Echoing similar sentiments, the Director, African Development Bank Group, Mr. Dore Ousmare urged legislators to reflect on priority sectors and takes actions so that governments direct to them the appropriate resources.  The ultimate objectives being to get value for the money spent.
