    Southwest youths endorse Jonathan

Youths from across the Southwest states yesterday converged on Akure, the Ondo State capital, to endorse the second term bid of President Goodluck Jonathan.

The youth said their resolve to support Jonathan was based on his promise to implement the recommendations of last year’s National Conference.

The summit chairman, Lanre Olu Adeyemi, who read the communiqué at the end of the summit, said they have  resolved to back the re-election bid of President Goodluck Jonathan.

Governor Olusegun Mimiko said he purposely convened the summit to remind youths to rise up for the progress of the country.

He urged all youths to support  Jonathan in his desire to continue with his transformation agenda.

The governor saluted the President for his leadership focus, especially concerning the just concluded National Conference.

Delivering his keynote address, Prof Dupe Olatunbosun urged the youth to support Jonathan’s second term bid, saying he must not be denied a second term.

His words: “The North has been in power for 36 years and the South only 18 years.

“Therefore, in the interest of fairness, justice, equity and the overall national interest, the southern interest should take precedence over the northern interest.

“Nigerian needs someone such as Jonathan who can transform the nation in all areas.”

He called on the youth to collect their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) to conduct their franchise.

Afenifere spokesman Yinka Odumakin said the implementation of the recommendations of the National Conference was crucial and must be supported by the youth.

Odumakin emphasised that the interest of the Yoruba nation was more paramount than the interest of any individual.

In his goodwill message, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Youth & Student, Jude Imagwe, urged Nigerians to vote for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), noting that President Jonathan was the only credible candidate for the election.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has described the gathering as a resultant effect of unemployment and poverty in the land.

The party said the endorsement by students and youth groups sponsored by Mimiko did not reflect the wishes and yearnings of people in the region.

The Publicity Secretary, Abayomi Adesanya, said at a briefing in Akure that it was disheartening to see Mimiko manipulating the youth, whose future had been destroyed through unemployment and poverty.

He said: “It is common in the country to see a 30-year-old man still living with his parents.

“Millions of our young graduates are walking the streets daily in search jobs or how to earn a living.

“It is sad that Mimiko has impoverished the youth to use them for political gains. We feel sad anytime we think about the welfare of our youths.

“These young Nigerians who are supposed to be our future leaders have been made to pass through an unwholesome situation.

“Most of the youth who graced the summit came because of what would accrue into their pockets. It will be unfair if we say students and youth groups should not collect their share of the President’s largesse.

“We can only advise the youth groups and students to collect the money and vote for a man with proven integrity, experience and competence to govern Nigeria, where their future would be guaranteed.”

  • Registered voters to endorse state creation

Only registered voters will approve any request for the creation of a new state, according to a Bill for an Act to further alter the constitution and other matters connected therewith 2014.

The bill, which contained amended sections of the constitution, was adopted by the National Assembly on Wednesday, awaiting the President’s assent.

Before the amendment, only those in the area requesting states voted without distinguishing the demographic details of people that should participate in a referendum.

The new alteration now simplifies the relevant section by requiring that only registered voters could vote in a referendum to endorse or reject the request for a state.

The new provision was endorsed by 28 states, including Abia, Adamawa, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Benue, Borno, Cross River, Delta, Ebonyi, Edo, Enugu, Gombe, Imo, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Kebbi, Kogi, Lagos, Nasarawa, Niger, Oyo, Ogun, Ondo, Plateau and Rivers.

States that rejected the provision included Ekiti, Katsina, Kwara, Osun, Sokoto, Taraba, Yobe and Zamfara.

Section 8 (1)(b) of “An Act of the National Assembly for the purpose of creating a new state” says that “a proposal for the creation of the state is thereafter approved in a referendum by at least two-thirds majority of the people of the area where the demand for creation of the state originated.”

Section 8 (1) (c) says: “The result of the referendum is then approved by a simple majority of all the states of the Federation supported by a simple majority of members of the Houses of Assembly.”

While Section 8(1) (d) says: “The proposal is approved by a resolution passed by two-thirds majority of members of each House of the National Assembly.”

The amended version, however, states 8(1) (b) “ a proposal for the creation of the state is thereafter approved in a referendum by at least two-thirds majority of the registered voters of the local government council in the area voting at the referendum where the demand for creation of the state originated.

Section 8(1) c of the amended version says: “The result of the referendum is then approved by a resolution of the state Houses of Assembly of not less than two-thirds majority of all the states of the federation.”

Also, section 8 (1) d of the amended version says “the approved proposal is passed by a resolution of not less than two-thirds majority of members of each House of the National Assembly.”

  • Hausa in Kwara endorse Ahmed

The Hausa in Kwara State have endorsed Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, for the April 11 election.

They promised to vote for all APC candidates.

The Haussa urged members of their community and other Kwara residents to “disregard any call on them to jettison their benefactor in the coming elections as one good term deserves another”.

The Special Assistant to the Governor on Hausa Community, Alhaji Yusuf Albusira, hailed the Ahmed administration for even distribution of dividends of democracy to indigenes and non-indigenes.

Albusira said: “The present administration in the state has done so much to the Hausa community. About 10 of our people have benefited from the Kwara Bridge Empowerment Scheme (KWABES) and Quickwin empowerment schemes of the government.

“We enjoy immense benefits from the state and local governments. Our people have been employed in Kwara State Transport Management Authority (KWARTIMA). In the same vein, some of our children have also been employed in the state ministries.”

  • Lawyers endorse Buhari/Osinbajo

    Lawyers endorse Buhari/Osinbajo

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Ikorodu branch has endorsed the All Progressive Congress (APC) presidential candidate Gen. Muhammadu Buhari and his running mate Prof. Yemi Osinbajo (SAN).

In a statement by its chairman Mr. Dotun Adetunji and Secretary Blessing Ene the lawyers’ body said by virtue of their training and professional calling, lawyers are better equipped to advance the course of  societies.

They urged  lawyers support Prof. Osinbajo who is a senior and leading member of the Bar.

The statement reads: “In the words of the first Nigerian lawyer, Christopher Alexander Sapara-Williams (called to the English Bar in 1879 and the Nigerian Bar in 1898), ‘The legal practitioner lives for the direction of his country’.

“Similarly, Article 14 of the Basic Principles on the Role of Lawyers adopted in Havana in 1990 loudly and unmistakably proclaims that ‘… Lawyers, in protecting the rights of their clients and in promoting the cause of justice, shall seek to uphold human rights and fundamental freedoms recognised by national and international law  and shall at all times act freely and diligently in accordance with the law and recognised standards and ethics of the legal profession.’

”It is against this background that the NBA Ikorodu Branch deemed it pertinent to unanimously endorse, and has unanimously endorsed, the candidature of General Muhammadu Buhari and professor Yemi Oluleke Osinbajo (SAN) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the forthcoming presidential elections fixed for February 14, 2015.

“The NBA Ikorodu Branch in taking this monumental, historic and unanimous decision took cognisance of the elephantine deterioration, unprecedented decay, immeasurable irresponsibility, unjustifiable insensitivities, illegal actions and inactions coupled with limitless unconstitutional activities of the incumbent administration which have attained frightening dimensions and require urgent national massive electoral rejection and replacement with committed patriots and selfless nationalists such as the duo of General Muhammadu Buhari and Professor Yemi Osinbajo (SAN) with known unassailable track records of achievements, transparency, honesty, integrity, vision, selflessness, human capital development, institutions building and multiple-legacies development capacity.

“The NBA Ikorodu Branch recall, with nostalgia and gratitude, that Prof. Osinbajo  between 1999 and 2007 when he served as Attorney General and Commissioner  for Justice under the able and amiable leadership of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, almost single-handedly transformed the judicial landscape, not only in Lagos State,  but in the Federation at large, commencing from bold outstanding conditions of service to all judges through reform of procedural rules (both civil and criminal), sustainable access to justice initiatives to qualitative, substantive and physical reconstruction of the justice sector.

“Lagos State kick-started this uncommon pro-people and development-based phenomenon, the Federal Government and the other 35 States including the FCT had no option than to follow.

“As a Legal Practitioner, well-schooled in the sociological perspective and believing that law is an instrument for positive social engineering, Prof. Osinbajo did not only permanently and positively effected changes in both the substantive and procedural laws, he had equally engendered enormous personnel re-orientation and positive attitudinal transformation in a very deep and wide systemic way…”

‘which other committed Chief Law Officers, both within and outside Nigeria, are still emulating un

“As a visionary, progressive intellectual and world-class scholar, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo (SAN)’s universal reputation for personal integrity and national (if not global) acclaim for having re-shaped the country’s judicial sanctity and integrity clearly qualifies and presents him as the most appropriate Nigerian to join and work with General Buhari to rescue Nigeria and Nigerians from the ceaseless abyss of poverty, incompetence, inefficiency, insecurity, inept

and myopic leadership and otiose mismanagement that are currently plaguing the country.

“The NBA Ikorodu Branch reminds Nigeria and Nigerians that “though the beginning may be small, the latter end shall be great and prosperous” for us all with the duo of General Muhammadu Buhari and Professor Yemi Osinbajo (S.A.N) piloting the affairs of this country from May 29, 2015. The NBA Ikorodu Branch therefore urges all Nigerians to always plan ahead as “it was not raining when Noah built the ark”. Nigerians must obtain their Permanent Voters Card (PVC) and vote massively to ensure the desired change we all crave for and ensure a Greater Nigeria where insurgency, sundry government ins~nsi~ity, un-employment, mal-administration, lawlessness, injustice, obstinate disregard of rule of law and the due process is  truly a thing of the past and where justice and peace shall truly reign supreme”

EYC thanked Governor Chibuike Amaechi for insisting on equity, justice and fairness for all ethnic nationalities in Rivers State to enable them have a sense of belonging.

Peterside picked his running mate from Ahoada West in Ekpeye Kingdom.

  • Uyo PDP leaders endorse zoning

    Uyo PDP leaders endorse zoning

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) stakeholders in Uyo Senatorial District, Akwa Ibom State, have endorsed the zoning of the governorship ticket to Eket District by the party leadership.

Announcing the decision on zoning, Senator Effiong Bob, who spoke after the stakeholders’ meeting, said: “Elders of the PDP in Uyo senatorial district decided to toe the line of peace in the interest of the party because the decision of the party is final.”

Bob added: “It was a difficult decision to arrive at, following the popularity of Obong Bassey Albert Akpan, who has won the election,  but there was nothing any member of the PDP could do to win the election, if that person is not from Eket Senatorial District, based on the zoning adopted by the National Working Committee (NWC).

“Something happened before something happened, that is why we have decided to follow Jesus, a man of peace, no turning back, this peace has caused us something. If there were provision for independent candidacy by INEC, he would have been the next governor. But, since Uyo  would not want to play the opposition, we have decided to follow the decision of our party.”

The party chieftain said Obong Albert has not disappointed the people for accepting to step down, adding: “If the people demand apology it should not be from Albert, since he did not step down on his own, but was forced to do so by his party. Uyo district is known for peace, when we speak, others listen, for the interest of peace we have decided to support Eket senatorial for governorship. Uyo had it, Ikot Ekpene has it, Eket must also have it in 2015. Bassey Albert has not committed any offence; he has not betrayed anyone; it pains him more than any of his supporters, but he has to abide by the party’s decision.”

Senator Bob said: “Albert is innocent and the party is supreme”. He urged the people of Uyo to support the zoning.

Albert said: “Based on the support garnered so far, if the party had allowed every aspirant to contest, I would become the next governor of the state. “It pains me; I feel it, because millions of Akwa Ibom people wanted me.”

Also speaking, House of Assembly member Hon. Onofiok Luke (Nsit Ubium State Constituency) said: “As far as the party whose platform every member works under and has taken oath of membership, such member has accepted to walk according to the tenet of the party.”

He stressed that Albert cannot take decision for the party and that it is only the  PDP that has the right to take decisions for any of its members including Albert

The politician, however, blamed the elders and leaders of the district for not carrying them along on vital decisions affecting the political direction of the district. He added:  “Our elders should be blamed for the misunderstanding between the youths and the governor over the zoning issue. He said most of them have been supporting Eket district. Some of them called the governor every night to discuss the same issue, while the youths were put in dark. We the youths have also come out today to say we also support Eket senatorial district for governorship in 2015.”

He thanked the Governor Godswill Akpabio for appointing an Uyo senatorial district indigene from Nsit Ubium as the new Secretary to Government.

The Arewa Forum, the umbrella association of Northern lawyers, is expected to decide this weekend on who it will vote for.

But many prominent lawyers are supporting Adesina.

Falana, in a video cast, said: “I have known Dele Adesina since our youthful days. He is a committed Bar activist and has served the NBA in various capacities in the last 30 years. He is the man needed at this hour to bring about change to the Bar. He is passionately committed to good governance and the rule of law.

“His credentials in all the offices he has held stand him out. I will urge lawyers to vote for him.”

Duke said: “The NBA, like most Nigerian institutions, requires able and tested leadership, particularly in these times that various Nigerian institutions are threatened for want of good leadership. This is not the time to try new ones. This is because the NBA plays a very critical role in our democracy and rule of law.”

  • Abia 2015: Monarchs endorse Abaribe for governorship

Abia 2015: Monarchs endorse Abaribe for governorship

Traditional rulers in Abia South Senatorial District have endorsed Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe for governorship.

They urged him to declare his interest in the number one seat, ahead of the primaries.

Also, Ndigbo in Kano, under the umbrella of the Oha Ngwa clan, have stormed Ohuru, Abaribe’s country home, urging him to announce his aspiration to govern the state.

The Senate spokesman is a former deputy governor of Abia State. He is still consulting with stakeholders over his ambition.

Endorsing his candidature, traditional rulers from the six local governments of Abia South led by Chief Isreal Nwahunanya, said that Abaribe was endorsed because the stakeholders had the understanding that the governorship would be zoned to the South District.

He described him as ther most qualified aspirant, urging other zones to support his bid.

He said: “Senator stands head and shoulders above others, in terms of experience and exposure to clinch the position. Having been a deputy governor, two-time senator and being someone whose career has spanned the academia, corporate world, business, public service and politics, no one is better qualified than him”.

Also, a delegation of Ohangwa people in Kano led by Mr Stone Ehiemere told Senator Abaribe that he should unfold his plan for the election.

He said: We have vetted the aspirants and come to the conclusion that Abaribe is well ahead in experience, exposure and he is intellectually sound to lead the state to an unprecedented economic development.

“We carefully looked at the hordes of aspirant and arrived at a faultless conclusion that Senator Abaribe ranks unassailable ahead of others. We make bold for anybody to challenge us on this. We have no doubt that he has all it takes to govern Abia well.”

In his response, Abaribe thanked both groups for their their kind gestures. He informed them that he had already made up his mind to run for the governorship of Abia State and that their coming to urge him to run was divine.

However, the senator said that he was inspired by the calls to intensify his consultations with the party leaders and other stakeholders.

He said the next governor will not be perceived as the governor of Abia South or UkwaNgwa , but the governor of Abia State.

  • Etsako, Edo North leaders endorse Ihonvbere for Senate

Etsako, Edo North leaders endorse Ihonvbere for Senate

Leaders of the All Progressive Congress in Etsako Central and East local government areas of Edo State have endorsed the Secretary to Government, Professor Julius Ihonvbere, for the Senate in the next year’s election.

They urged him to declare his interest in the Edo North senatorial seat. The leaders said: “We will send our very best to the Senate in 2015”.

Also, the Ndigbo leaders in Edo North Senatorial District, who recently visited the SSG, assured him of their support.

Etsako East APC leader Prince Malik Afegbua said in Okpella: “If somebody like this, with a long credential, come to tell you that it’s not governorship this time, but he wants to go to the Senate, what will you do with him?

“This is the appointed day by God for him to come here. You can see the crowd here. It is because of the love they have for him. He is a very humble person. Here is a man that contested for the governorship of this state twice and you all know what happened. But, because of the good work the governor is doing, he decided to hang his garment of pride to come and work with the Comrade Governor as the SSG.

“We have our leaders. We will not impose you on our people. We will consult and let you know our decision. But, I pray God will say yes to your ambition.”

Ihonvbere said he decided to consult and attract the goodwill and solidarity of the people.

He said: “I looked at Afenmai as people with very rich history, who have made countless contributions to the development of Nigeria and and state. If you look at the political balancing and the kind of representation we have now at the Senate, it’s not a true picture of the spirit, courage, vision and intelligence of the Afenmai person.

“If I was convinced as a teacher, a pro-democracy activist and administrator, that the incumbent was performing at 30 per cent, I wouldn’t have run against him; there would be no need because there would be hope that he will get to 40 per cent and 50 per cent.

“But, when I look at what it takes to be a Senator, when I look at what Afenmailand needs from the senator, I did not see it there. According to a market woman in Uzeba, the Senate is not a place for political idiocy, recklessness and perambulation.

“I believe that somebody going to the Senate to represent Afenmai land must be thorough and intellectually sound. He must have capacity for research. He must have ability to understand issues, analyse issues and draw conclusion both medium and long terms”.

The political scientist said that a senator must be able to anticipate political developments and articulate the interest of the Afenmai people. He said a senator must posses the attributes of a good politician.

Ihonvbere added: “I believe a senator is not someone who seeks votes, gets there and forgets the people. If you forget the ladder that took you up or you set it on fire, you forget that you will come down one day; that is not the kind of person who should be your senator.

“A senator is not a person who shows off once a year with sone bags of rice and say am your Senator, remember me. He has to be a consistent person and be persistent in his engagement with the people, communities, constituencies and leaders to demonstrate what he or she is doing there for the district.”
