    Artistes and politics of endorsement

Gboyega Alaka takes a look at the new trend of artistes open romance and endorsement of politicians and political parties.

Between the late Sikiru Ayinde Barrister and King Wasiu Ayinde Marshal (KWAM1), it may be difficult to determined who braced the trail in publicly endorsing and waxing records for politicians during campaigns. Both fuji musicians waxed an album each for the then Lagos state governor, Bola Ahmed Tinubu during the countdown to his second term campaign in 2003. Since then, KWAM1 especially has pitched his support wherever the Lagos political juggernaut pitched his tent, although he somehow took it too far in 2007, when he also publicly sang support songs for the opposition Musiliu Obanikoro and was publicly condemned.

No thanks to the cold hands of death, we can never tell if Barrister himself would have gone the same way, although it is important to note here that Barrister never publicly supported any politician or party during the second republic, when he was at the peak of his stardom. The best, he and his contemporary, Kollington Ayinla did was to celebrate positive government policies from time to time, and condemn dereliction in government, whenever the need arose.

Even their precursors in the hi-life and other genres like Sir Victor Olaiya, Eddie Okonta, Sir Victor Uwaifo, Fela Anikulapo Kuti, King Sunny Ade, Ebenezer Obey and the late Sonny Okosun hardly dabbled into politics, as they felt safe outside partisan politics. That way, they also were never consumed by the passion that usually followed.

The story is however different today. With that flag-off by the fuji musicians, D-banj, openly romanced and flocked around the then ‘breath of fresh air, President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, as he campaigned for election, after seeing through his late boss’ tenure. The fracas that heralded his assuming the mantle of leadership after the Late Umaru Yar’adua’s death also threw up lots of supporters for Jonathan. Chief amongst them were pop singer, Onyeka Onwenu, Sammy Okposo, and Nollywood actors like Chidi Mokeme, Kate Hensahw-Nuttal et al.

Justifiable, their advent was to enforce the constitution, which was then being undermined, as a few cabal seemed hell-bent on preventing Jonathan from becoming president after his principal’s death. But somehow, it seems they have had a taste or the juicy apple, and like the biblical progenitors of mankind, their eyes had become opened to the sweetness inherent in flocking with power politicians.

To mention a few, Onyeka Onwenu has reaped from that open support for President Jonathan, as she was subsequently appointed Executive Director/CEO of National Centre for Women Development (NCWD), a federal government agency with office in Abuja. Some artistes of Nollywood extraction have also begun enjoying the ‘fruit of their labour,’ as the president’s largesse purportedly for the development of Nollywood has started trickling to them. Never mind the widespread complaint that accessing the loan is tantamount to the proverbial camel passing through a needle’s eye.

But while the romance and bias for politicians have largely been sublimated by the artistes in the past, such is no longer the case, as they now come out in droves to sing in adverts, mount podiums with politicians and follow their campaign train all over the country.

Many have also wondered why they have suddenly thrown cautions to the wind. Could it be because of the sudden boost in the music and movies industry that has thrown up multiple stars and pseudo-stars? Could it be a case of too many artistes looking to make a living and the politicians simply catching in on a cheap opportunity? Never before has Nigeria boasted of so many celebrities, who also enjoy huge followership across the nation’s demography.

Many have also wondered at how safe this adventure is for the artistes? Would it not impact on their followership if it turned out that they had jumped on the wrong train? What happens if the camp they log on to loses out and they also lose out of big shows and concerts that may subsequently emanate from the government in power?

Ganiyu Olowu, a public relations practitioner with Lagos-based PR Redline says it is not a crime for artistes to openly endorse or show support for politicians or political parties, since no law forbids them in this regard. “To start with, there is no universal rule that prevents celebrities, sportsmen and women, actor and actresses and musicians from endorsing political parties or politicians of their choice.”

What he however considers dangerous for their professional existence is the fact that they may be toying with the emotions of their huge followership, which may in turn have dire consequences for their careers.

Olowu again speaks: “In brand building, you don’t toy with your huge followership by hurting their feeling with either religion or politics. This trend I must observe is dangerous and many of them may not gain their followers back after the jamboree.”

This may thus explain why older artistes have chosen wisely to stand aloof, when it comes to partisan politics. Even the late Ayinde barrister only joined the fray in the twilight of his career, when he probably thought it was safe.

Wasiu Ayinde however makes no excuses for his partisanship, declaring unequivocally in an interview in another medium that “Majority of the people are not truly enjoying good governance and we should not shut our mouth to this.”

He Nigeria is not enjoying the benefit of good governance, and said that his encounters with Nigerians abroad have shown that this is the main reason Nigerians have been moving out of the country in droves in the last 30 years. He also disclosed that his involvement in politics is not new and that he has always been involved in partisan politics and is thus not afraid of any consequences. He also revealed in that interview that he has been a party member for a long time, and was even voted as an executive of the youth wing of a party in Nigeria as a 17-year old.

This response may however not suffice with some people, who have already concluded that the fuji star has been smiling to the bank all the way. Some even say that he gets paid as much of five million naira for every APC show or record he waxes.

Kwam1’s response to that allegation however is that he is blessed with his job and that as a 58 year-old, he does not need to be financially induced to take a position in the political dispensation, as a Nigerian.

However, while it might be said that people like KWAM1 have reached the climax of their career and therefore have no reason to be scared, this may not be said of the younger stars, as they or their careers may be consumed in the fallout, should their favourite party or candidate lose out.

Ganiyu Olowu again responds to this danger, “The day a Musician or Sportsman becomes an icon that is loved and cherished by cult of followers, he or she must not think like a faceless citizen. His destiny is hung to the neck of his followers. So he must not equally toy with the mutual love by declaring open relationship with a particular politician or political party.”

Indeed, some say this was why, people like Eedris Abdulkareem lost out in many corporate and government shows after his ‘Nigeria jagajaga” song, while artistes like Tony Tetuila reaped massively with his song, E go beta.’

Recall also that former President Olusegun Obasanjo had to personally express his anger and distaste for the ‘jagajaga’ song, saying it was most unpatriotic and irresponsible to so refer to your own country.

It is on the backdrop of this that artistes need to beware of what might be their portion the morning after.

  • Royal endorsement for Peterside in Ikwere

Royal endorsement for Peterside in Ikwere

The endorsement of the Rivers State All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Hon. Dakuku Peterside, by traditional rulers in Ikwerre may have changed the geo-political calculation, ahead of the polls. EMMANUEL OLADESU reports.

In Rivers State, ethnicity is a factor. Thus, many people believe that it will be a major issue during the governorship election.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Chief Nyesom Wike, is Ikwere. The All Progressives Congress (APC flag beraer, Hon. Dakuku Peterside, is from the lowland area.

However, it appears that there is limitation to how far ethnicity can shape the process. A pointer to this was the decision of the  Ikwerre Supreme Council of Traditional Rulers to endorse Peterside for governor. The monarchs explained that they took the decision in the spirit of equity and justice.

The APC candidate got the endorsement, following his visit to the monarchs.

Wike, the former Minister of State for Education, is said to have the backing of the Presidency, particularly the First Lady, Mrs. Patience Jonathan.

The monarchs are from four Ikwerre local government areas of Obio/Akpor, Port-Harcourt, Emohua and Ikwerre. They urged their subjects to vote for Peterside. saying that he is a good candidate.

In the view of their traditional rulers, power rotation will contribute to the unity of the state and give every ethnic group a sense of belonging. They reasoned that, since Ikwere has enjoyed the slot for eight years, power should shift to the riverine area, which backed Governor Rotimi Amaechi for the slot, seven and half years ago.

Peterside told the monarchs that they have an important role to play in governance. He said: “Ikwere as an ethnic nationality has a very critical role to play at this point in the life of Rivers State. As custodians of Ikwere culture and value system, we want you to lend your voice of reason so that people can take the right path.”

The riverine people have not relented in their agitation for power shift. Peterside justified the clamour during his visit to the monarchs. He said the agitation is not peculiar to Rivers State.

Rivers State is divided into the upland and riverine areas. Since 1999, the upland people have been producing the governors. Thus,  Peterside’s victory is expected to be a victory for fairness, equity and justice.

When the state was created, the elders sealed an informal agreement that the governorship slot will rotate between the two divides.

Reflecting on the agitation for power shift, former PDP governorship aspirant Fafaa Dan-Princewill said: “In 1999, I was a founding member of the PDP. I could not contest for the governor in 1999 because it was zoned outside the riverine area. Chief Odili became governor and it was expected that, after eight years of his rule, it would revert to the riverine area.

“But, that again didn’t happen and we had Celestine Omehia for a short period and now Governor Rotimi Amaechi. Which means at the end of this tenure, it would have been 16 years for the upland group.”

The PDP chieftain said that any party that is indifferent to the agitation may incur the wrath of voters.  Dan-princewill added: “I cannot speak for what the Ijaws or riverine people would do. But,  I would not be surprised, if the backlash is heavy because it is a very controversial issue. The level of agitation today indicates that it could lead to serious backlash for the party.”

The APC Chairman, Dr. Davies Ikanya, said Amaechi supported zoning to avoid public anger. He stressed: “Rivers State APC was divinely set up to address three principal injustices visited on Rivers State. One of them is the unjust situation whereby the riverine area has not occupied the seat of power since 1999. After the eight years of Dr. Peter Odili and the eight years of Amaechi, who are from the upland section, it is important that the next governor should come from the ruiverine area.”

Peterside was not the only aspirant from the riverine area. Senator Magnus Abe, Mr. Tele Ikuru, and Mr. George Feyi, were in the race. But, Ikanya explained that, although all of them were qualified, Peterside was chosen   because “he is a symbol of unity of the Ogoni, riverine and upland sections of the state.”

In the PDP, Wike has conveyed the impression that only his candidature could make the party to bounce back. But, contrary to the PDP’s calculation, it appears that the party is losing grassroots support.

At the endorsement ceremony, a community leader,  Eze Orlu Oriebe, described Peterside as a bridge of unity and harmony. “You are the only governorship candidate who saw the need to visit the traditional council, and  you realised that you cannot go out there to tell our people anything without paying homage, ” he said.

Apart from the royal blessing, there are other factors in favour of Peterside. Since he has been endorsed by Amaechi, he enjoys the power of incumbency. The governor’s  insistence on power rotation is an added advantage to Peterside’s aspiration. But, the flag bearer’s personality also counts.

According to the monarchs, who referred to him as “His Excellency-in-waiting,” Peterside is humble and pleasant. They also perceived him as a non-controversial figure.

  • PDP chief hails delegates on Jonathan’s endorsement

PDP chief hails delegates on Jonathan’s endorsement

The leader of the Jonathan Mandate for Justice 2015  (JMJ) and achieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in BauchI State, Mr. Noah Dallaji, has hailed the outcome of the national convention which, he described as a foretaste of victory for President Goodluck Jonathan in next year election.

In a statement in Bauchi, the state capital,  Dallaji praised the delegates, leaders and members, who attended the convention and their resolve to elect the President. He said Dr. Jonathan will win the election and use the mandate to consolidate on his transformation agenda.

Dallaji said the convention has confirmed to the world that the PDP  is a democratic  party, which would always conform to its constitution by allowing the wishes of the people to prevail.

He added: “As a democratic party, the PDP has by the outcome of this convention showed to the world that we are true democrats. The delegates have expressed themselves through their ballots and resolved to give President Goodluck Jonathan the presidential ticket which is a good thing for our collective interest as a people and nation in an era of consolidating our national transformation and we can only thank and praise the delegates for their wise decision. Importantly, we cannot but also praise the leadership of our national chairman, Alhaji Adamu Mua’zu, who has provided good direction, stabilized and united  the party since he came on board.

“What is important in a democracy is the process which should conform with the ethics of democracy and this was vindicated at this convention because the people made their choice and this should be respected by all as a fundamental objective of democracy. It was a democratic enterprise which further showed the resilience of the  PDP as a political party, the acumen and commitment  of its leaders as well as the good spirit and discipline of our members.”

Dallaji said the President’s victory would also be reflected in the general election, stressing that the electorate can see beyond the antics of the opposition.

He added: “What is important to the people now  is how to consolidate on the progress already made across the nation by virtue of the the impact of the transformation agenda of the president and never to go back to the past of unpredictable policy and leadership change.

“The President’s victory at the convention is a foretaste of what to expect in the 2015 general election because the people will vote massively for Mr. President and that should not surprise the opposition.

“The opposition will have their say, but they can’t stop the people from voting according to their wishes and aspirations. All they want is continuity of policies and programmes to consolidate on the gains already made through the transformation agenda of this government, which the people can seee as impacting their lives and much more would be done during the president’s second coming.

“So, it is not about changing policies and leadership  for the sake of it but consolidating on the good work done by the Jonathan Administration which is showing signs of improvement that our nation is getting better, delivering on the challenge of national cohesion and development even as we note that much more still need to be done. We have to be careful of unpredictable policy and leadership change, we certainly need to move forward.”

  • Lagos 2015: Ope gets massive endorsement

The people of Alimosho, Apapa, Ikorodu, Badagry and Eti-Osa local councils of Lagos State have endorsed the bid of Hon. Lanre Ope to become the next governor of the state, on the platform of All Progressives Congress (APC). This is coming on the heels of the ongoing state wide consultative tour of all local governments in the state by the aspirant.

The tour is part of Ope’s engagement with stakeholders to solicit for their support for his aspiration. The aspirant’s efforts appear to be yielding positive results. Indications from various local councils suggest that the representatives of people have endorsed Ope’s bid to govern the state. The consensus is that “Ope is the only candidate with the right experience in both public and private sector that can sustain the drive to build Lagos State of our dream.”

Hon. Ope’s political ascendancy and achievements preceded him. A successful private sector-driven reformer, he revolutionised security in the banking sector through the introduction of revolving security doors. The initiative, which has now become the norm in the industry, has mitigated armed attacks.  Ope is also a reputable real estate investor with over 400 housing units to his credit.

He is also an accomplished public service innovationist with an impeccable track record. It is on record that he demonstrated strong leadership skills in the development and implementation of procurement and distribution strategies for fertilizers in Nigeria, as the Secretary of the Task Force on Fertilizer Distribution.

As a member of the Lagos State Assembly, his vision of food security for Lagos State earned him the nickname ‘food security’ and he moved the motions that led to establishing the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and the passage of the Child Rights Bill.

In demonstration of his principled stand in the face of tyranny, Hon. Ope after due consultation with elders in his constituency, traditional rulers and seasoned politicians resigned from 1994 National Constitutional Conference. This move was hailed as a very principled position, as the issues he raised were real.

According to representatives of Christian Coalition, “Hon. Lanre Ope is a Christian candidate with pedigree, a committed member of Mountain of Fire Ministries with over 20 years membership. We are however more interested in a Lagos State where everybody will have access to quality lifestyle, uniform development, security and highly improved infrastructure without prejudice to religious inclination.”

The Christian Coalition also affirmed that they have the mandate of leadership of other Pentecostal and Orthodox Christian organisations to support Ope’s governorship aspiration without prejudice to those of other aspirants vying for the same position.

Some of the party stalwarts at the various venue of the consultation were also unanimous in their view that the APC requires a candidate with a good dose of public and private sector experience, to present a formidable candidate with an impeccable track record in both public and private service as its candidate at the forthcoming election. This would help the party to consolidate on the achievement of the current administration.

  • Endorsement: PDP governors may confront Jonathan

Endorsement: PDP governors may confront Jonathan

The governors elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) yesterday kicked against the stoppage of consensus endorsement of their candidature and others in their states for the 2015 poll by the National Working Committee(NWC) of the party.

The aggrieved governors alleged that the NWC had acted in concert with the presidency to halt the endorsement gale.

They also accused the presidency and the NWC  of “double standards” when the leader of the party, President Goodluck Jonathan had benefited from the same consensus endorsement.

Some of the governors also said they might ask the National Convention of the party to revisit the endorsement of Jonathan by the National Executive Committ  ee(NEC).

The National Secretary of the party, Prof. Wale Oladipo, had on Thursday voided the endorsement of governorship, senatorial and other candidates by the governors and state chapters.

The party directed the governors and state chairmen of PDP to cancel such endorsements.

With the annulment of the endorsements, some of those affected are: the President of the Senate; Chief David Mark, who is seeking the fifth term in the Senate; the Senate Leader, Victor Ndoma-Egba(SAN); outgoing governors already anointed for the Senate, including  Godswill Akpabio( Akwa Ibom);  Gabriel Suswam(Benue);  Emmanuel Uduaghan(Delta); Saidu Dakingari(Kebbi); Theodore Orji ( Abia); Sullivan Chime( Enugu); Ibrahim Shema(Katsina); Babangida Aliyu(Niger); and Isa Yuguda(Bauchi)

Others are: second-term- seeking governors like Ramalan Yero( Kaduna); the Acting Governor of Taraba State, Garba Umar; Ibrahim Dankwambo(Gombe); Henry Seriake-Dickson(Bayelsa),  among others.

Those whose governorship endorsements  have been voided are Emmanuel Ugwuanyi(Enugu); the Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu(Ebonyi); ex-Minister of State for Health, Dr. Ali Pate( Bauchi).

Investigation by our correspondent revealed that the governors were shocked that the PDP NWC could give such a directive after it had lured them to endorse Jonathan’s automatic second-term ticket.

One of the governors, who was devastated by the directive, said: “We have discussed among ourselves, such a cancellation  of endorsements by the NWC is unacceptable to us.

“Whatever is good for the goose is good for the gander. If the NWC means business, the ban on endorsements should be across the board.

“We cannot be used and dumped by anybody or group. Why are they changing the game now?”

Another governor said: “Such a ban will spell doom for the party. The National Headquarters should not dabble in what is happening at the state. Are they just realising that endorsement is not good for our democracy?

“Look, endorsement or consensus-building is part of the game too.”

A third governor said: “The party should let us subject all nomination process to state congresses and National Convention. The party should leave the presidential nomination open and the President should seek second term mandate at the National Convention.

“Since the beginning of the week, we had suspected foul play when they directed all aspirants to come to Abuja to collect nomination form for any elective office.

“In any case, I am not bothered because the National Secretary , who issued the directive, was not elected by the National Convention of the party. The directive was a product of illegality, it cannot stand.”

It was gathered that some governors were being appeased by party leaders as at the time of going to the press.

“Nobody us targeted but we do not want endorsement abused in such a way that it will erode democratic process. We will iron our issues on this,” a top party leader added.

  • Mixed reactions trail Ugwuanyi’s endorsement

Mixed reactions have continued to trail the endorsement of Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi as the Enugu State consensus candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in next year’s election.

Ugwuanyi was handed the consensus ticket last weekend by the PDP caucus in Enugu North, where the ticket was zone to.

While his supporters have hailed the endorsement, those in the camp of the Chairman of the Senate Committee on works, Ayogu Eze, have given it thumbs down.

Eze faulted the process that led to Ugwuanyi’s endorsement, insisting that he was still in the 2015 governorship race.

But a member of the PDP’s Board of Trustees (BoT) from the zone, who participated in the caucus meeting, Mrs. Justina Eze, described the senator’s comments as unfortunate.

She said it was a strange act that should not be encouraged in the interest of the people.

Mrs Eze said the people had been yearning for a sense of belonging in the affairs of the state.

According to her, the process that led to the emergence of Ugwuanyi was democratic and in conformity with the PDP constitution 2012, as amended.

Mrs Eze noted that such a distraction, if not controlled, could endanger the chances of the zone from producing the next governor.

She urged Senator Eze to take the party’s decision in good faith and cooperate with Ugwuanyi at the party primary and governorship elections.

Dr. Godsmark Eddy Ugwu, one of the aspirants who stepped down for Ugwuanyi, described Senator Eze’s comments as unwarranted.

The former aspirant said the senator had benefited heavily from the party through the same process he was antagonising.

He said the Enugu PDP, which twice gave Eze the Senate ticket, had been magnanimous to him.

Ugwu noted that Senator Eze should show appreciation rather than anger about the party’s decisions and abide by them.

The politician criticised Senator Eze for describing the caucus meeting as “a gathering of people of my senatorial district”.

  • Endorsement of mediocrity

SIR: Against all sound reasoning, permutations and calculations that the leadership of PDP will rise above mediocrity, and impunity in choosing its flag bearer in 2015 presidential elections, the party hierarchs gathered last week to endorse President Goodluck Jonathan as candidate of the party. To make matters worse, the leadership of PDP said there will be no Presidential primaries since the incumbent is their sole candidate and so cannot be challenged. I consider this an act of desperation, a celebration of impunity. It supports Senator George Akume’s assertion that ”the chain of ethical liability is unbroken” in Nigeria.

In 1999 Nigeria generated about 4000mw of electricity. Nearly after 16years we are still under 4000mw. Now, are we making progress that we need to sustain this continuity? Security of lives and property was 90% efficient in 1999 and today that great progress has been eroded and undermined. We have lost more lives to carelessness in the last 16years than under military from 1985 to 1999. As I write this our nearly 300 Girls are still in captivity. Boko Haram has killed more than 3000 innocent Nigerians. Now, are we making progress in the areas of security to warrant this continuity mess?

Recently, the Nigeria Immigration Service, NIS announced a job vacancy for 3000 people and nearly six million Nigerians applied. NIS tried to do an open aptitude test in public spaces and the bizarre arrangement backfired. Nearly 30 Nigerians died as result of stampede that greeted the awkward and primitive arrangement. Again in the face this mounting unemployment situation can Nigerians believe this continuity brigandage?

From the Presidency to the National Assembly dominated by the PDP, from the Petroleum Industry to the Aviation Industry, from the Ministry of Works to the Civil Service as a whole, from the Defence to the External Affairs etc, its corruption and impunity all the way. A quantum of Nigeria’s budgetary allocations every year end into the private pockets. Recently they took a private jet belonging to Pastor Oritsejafor and loaded it with $9.3million for onward delivery to South Africa for an unknown transaction.. Even as I write this there has not been any serious explanation on how we got to this sorry pass that we have to traffic and abuse the United States dollars.

How can we be talking about continuity in the face of abysmal performance in the midst of plenty? Why must PDP continue to talk about continuity when all our infrastructures across the country have broken down with no hope to fix them in sight? How can we still be talking about retaining a non performer in a nation of nearly 160 million people?

How can the leaders of a very important country in Africa continue to travel abroad for mere medical check up when we have the capacity to build at least six world class hospitals in six zones of the country? How can we continue to lose students to quack universities in Ghana when we can build world class universities in Nigeria and invite other Africans to come here to study? How can we continue to take the insult that none of our universities can be rated high in Africa talk less of the world?

I cannot continue to be led to believe that President Jonathan is the best we can throw up. He has tried his best and he has to be voted out for the Nigerians to breathe fresh air.

Through actions and deeds, President Jonathan has divided Nigeria along religious and ethnic lines, he has pitched his Ijaw people against other Nigerians through patronage and lack of political will to call his people to order. He has not shown love to other Nigerians to prove that he is the president of all. President Jonathan has not been able to prosecute one high profile corrupt person since 2009. We have not been lucky in the department of leadership since PDP came to power in 1999. The world mocks us that we assume that somebody is in charge of Nigeria when nobody is really in charge.

I submit that the endorsement of President Jonathan to continue to rule Nigeria beyond 2015 is an endorsement of mediocrity.

  • No going back on Jonathan/Sambo endorsement, says Northwest PDP

Stakeholders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the Northwest stood yesterday their ground on the endorsement of President Goodluck Jonathan and Vice-President Namadi Sambo for the 2015 presidency. They said there was no going back on their earlier stand.

The stakeholders were reacting to the denial of the Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido, distancing the state from the party’s resolution at a meeting at the Gen. Hassan Katsina House, Kawo, Kaduna.

The Chairman of the Communiqué Drafting Committee and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Amb. Aminu Wali, in a statement in Kaduna wondered the sudden reversal by the Jigawa governor, “who was represented by his deputy.”

He threatened to show the video clip where the deputy governor supported the resolution reached, only for him to organise a news conference in Dutse to deny being part of the decision.

Wali said the resolution was part of the decisions of the party, which started from the state level to the zonal level “and Jigawa State was represented by the deputy governor. I wonder the reason for this denial.”

The statement reads: “Our attention has been drawn to a publication widely circulated in the media purported to have emanated from the Jigawa State governor, challenging the resolution of our expanded stakeholders’ meeting where he claimed that Jigawa State was not part of the resolution.

“It is against this backdrop that we deem it necessary to clear the air on this and other issues raised by the deputy governor at his news briefing in his office in Dutse, the Jigawa State capital.

“Let me firmly and explicitly state that the decision to hold the expanded stakeholders’ meeting was a culmination of several meetings held among key stakeholders of the zone, and Jigawa State was always represented by the deputy governor.

“It was also agreed at such meetings that each state must first hold its stakeholders’ meeting before the expanded meeting, which we believe was complied with by each state chapter of the party.

“The outcome of the meetings by the state chapters gave rise to the Northwest meeting. The expanded stakeholders’ resolve to urge President Goodluck Jonathan to contest for the office of the president in 2015. “This decision was the position of the majority of the stakeholders present at the meeting. Therefore, Amb. Aminu Wali was directed to read the communiqué and make it public as prepared and submitted by the party. This accounted for the presence of the governors and deputy governors, including that of Jigawa State standing behind Wali while he was reading the communiqué, to demonstrate their support and endorsement of the outcome of the meeting.

“For the deputy governor to return to Jigawa State and organise a news conference dissociating himself and the Jigawa State governor from the communiqué is an afterthought and rather very unfortunate.

“We have no atom of idea as to the reason for such denial we therefore find it necessary to put the record straight by confirming that we stand by the contents and outcome of our communiqué.”

  • PDP chieftains hail Ortom’s endorsement

Chieftains of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of Iharev extraction from Makurdi, Guma and Gwer West local government areas of Benue State have praised Minda stakeholders for endorsing Dr. Samuel Ortom for the governorship slot in 2015.

The chieftains included former members of the Benue State Executive Council, council chairmen, party executives, councilors, supervisors and grassroots politicians.

The party stalwarts spoke during a courtesy call on the Minister of State for Industry, Trade and Investment, Samuel Ortom, in Makurdi yesterday.

They expressed appreciation for what they described as the apparent consensus by majority in the four Tiv intermediate areas to concede the seat to the Minda political axis in the current dispensation.

The chieftains maintained that with the endorsement, the Minda stakeholders particularly the eldest politicians among them such as Iyo Iharev, John Azulo and Sylvanus Agagbe, have demonstrated understanding what the political atmosphere in the state.

Wizkid excited over endorsement deal renewal

Sensational Hip hop act Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun, aka Wizkid, is currently having a blast, as he has reportedly renewed his endorsement deals with MTN and Pepsi.

To confirm the deal, the jaiyejaiye crooner, who has also signed an endorsement deal with Hennesy, posted a picture of himself signing some papers, with the popular brands displayed on a table. He wrote: “Just renewed my contract with the biggest communication company. You see that Pepsi on the table? Do you see that Hennessy? Bigger than music! Big moves! Big brands!”

Wizkid, according to sources, is currently working on his second studio album titled Chosen, which is scheduled for release later in the year.

The forthcoming album, according to information, will feature guest appearances from Don Jazzy, Banky W, Femi Kuti, Seyi Shay, Efya and Olamide.

Wizkid unveiled his own label, Star Boy Entertainment, on March 5, 2013, with a plan to give up-and-coming artistes a platform to showcase their talents.
