    Enekwechi becomes  first African to throw over 22 metres

    .finishes third at Eugene Diamond League

    Nigeria’s Chukwuebuka Enekwechi stormed to third position at the Eugene Diamond League last weekend in the United States and thus made history to become the first African to throw over 22 meters in the men’s shot put.

    This achievement marked his first time exceeding 22 meters, surpassing his previous personal best of 21.91 meters, which he set at the same event last year.

    Enekwechi recorded an African record throw of 22.10 meters, finishing third at the Eugene Diamond League on Saturday.

    Joe Kovacs won the event with a world-leading mark of 22.48 meters.

    Roger Steen narrowly edged out Enekwechi for second place, achieving a personal best of 22.11 meters on his fifth attempt.

    Enekwechi attempted to improve on this with his last throw but ended with a mark of 21.68 meters.

    Enekwechi eyes Olympic medal in Paris

    African Shot-put champion Chukwuebuka Enekwechi says he is eager to win medal for Team Nigeria at the upcoming Olympics in Paris, France.

    The three-time consecutive African champion secured a first goal medal for Nigeria in the 2024 African Championships in Douala, Cameroon, on Friday and he went ahead to discuss his huge motivation to win a medal in Paris.

    “Anytime you throw well at the continental championship or global championship, it is exciting. I don’t even care what the distance is as long as I’m representing Nigeria,” Enekwechi said.

    “Records and streaks are meant to be broken, so I guess I’ve been on some kind of streak since 2018, it shows how old I’m getting, but also that I’m more mature and more experienced, and I want to face the challenges as they come.”

    “I want to make progress, and Nigerians want to see the 22m, so why not? And that also means I’m going to do better against my competitors because there are eight guys ahead of me as far as the world rankings, and I think it’s my responsibility to take them down.

    “If I throw 22 metres, it means I’m more likely to make the finals at the Olympics and fight for the medal”, he told Making of Champion.
