  • Isco leaves hospital after appendicitis surgery

Real Madrid playmaker Isco has left hospital after successfully undergoing an operation to treat appendicitis, the European champions said on Wednesday.

“Our player Isco has been discharged from hospital.

“He will start his recovery process now under the supervision of the Real Madrid medical services,” said a statement from the club which did not state how long Isco was expected to be out for.

Reports in the Spanish media, however, said the Spain international would be unable to play for around a month and was targeting a return in time for Real’s crunch match away to arch-rivals Barcelona on Oct. 28 in La Liga.

Isco was taken to hospital on Tuesday after arriving at training complaining of stomach pains.

He is set to miss a total of six games for Real, including Wednesday’s testing league trip to Sevilla and Saturday’s city derby against Atletico Madrid.

He will also have to sit out Champions League games against CSKA Moscow and Viktoria Plzen, as well as Spain’s friendly against Wales and their UEFA Nations League game with England.

  • Arsenal deny chief executive Gazidis resignation

Arsenal FC of England has denied reports that its chief executive, Ivan Gazidis, has accepted an offer that would see him leave the club.

Gazidis, who has enjoyed a stable tenure at the London club and built a cordial relationship with former coach Arsene Wenger, was reported to have decided to part ways with the club.

He was rumoured to be heading to Italian giants AC Milan from the beginning of the 2018/2019 season.

But according to a statement by Chips Keswick, Chairman of Arsenal Football FC, published on the club’s official website, the chief executive has no such offers.

He, however, admitted that Gazidis always receives luring offers due to his huge popularity.

“We are aware of the speculation surrounding our chief executive Ivan Gazidis. We know he receives many offers from organisations inside and outside the game as he’s a hugely respected figure.

“He has never accepted any of these opportunities and has never spoken about them publicly.

“He has always been fully committed to taking Arsenal forward and is currently working hard in Singapore with new head coach Unai Emery as we prepare for the new season,” the statement said.

  • 3rd place miss: England WAGs keep faith with players

We will always be there with you through thick and thin. That appears to be the stand of WAGS of England players after the team failed to clinch the third place in Russia.

The World cup which has been  the centre of attention since June 14, comes to a close on Sunday June 15.  The Three Lions, winners of the 1966 edition were hoping to clinch at least the third place after failing to hit the final following defeat by Croatia.  Despite their travails however the WAGS remained dogged in support of their team.

Rebekah Vardy, wife of England’s Jamie Vardy and Fern Hawkins, girlfriend of England’s Harry Maguire, led the way as they supported their men in the stands during the FIFA World Cup third place play-off match against Belgium at Saint Petersburg Stadium on Saturday.

Rebekah, 36, who has been present at every match, stood out in a red tank top that clung to her enviable curves while sporting glamourous shades to cover her eyes.

Meanwhile, Fern, 21, rocked an England tee and large silver hoops as she beamed with delight as her beau took to the pitch.

While her partner Jamie, 31, isn’t participating in the match due to an injury, the TV personality looked serious as the fate of England’s result played out.

The mother-of-four put on a leggy display in denim shorts while paying homage to the team with her red vest and slick of bright red lipstick.

Fern Hawkins has been supporting boyfriend Harry McGuire the whole way through the World Cup, but today it comes to and end for England as we compete against Belgium for third place.

Just like the previous matches, Fern’s made sure she’s wearing the three lions, but this time fashionably paired it with a camo denim skirt. If there was a trophy for best dressed it would have to go to Fern who just proves that camo really can go with anything.

Following England’s 2-1 defeat to Croatia in Wednesday’s semi-final, the bevvy of WAGs haven’t let the loss destroy their spirit as they turned up in force.

While the players fell to their knees in tears on Wednesday evening at the final whistle after coming so close to getting to the final, the beauties were there to commiserate their partners.

Not letting the English spirit die, the girls made sure they turned up to lead the way in true WAG style as they donned glamorous make-up and were not a hair out place.

    PREVIOUS MEETING…

Have two sides ever met twice at the same World Cup with so little at stake in either game?

When they clashed in the group stages, England made eight changes and Belgium made nine, for a game that neither seemed too keen to win for fear of ending up on the “harder” half of the draw.

It was Belgium who ended up edging the contest and finishing top of Group G after Adnan Januzaj’s brilliant strike in the 51st minute.

    OPTA STAT

England’s defeat to Croatia in their last match was their 100th competitive defeat – each of their last six competitive losses have been at major tournaments (five at the World Cup, one at the European Championships).

Harry Kane has had just one shot on target in his last three World Cup matches – his penalty goal against Colombia in the last 16. Kane has not had a shot on target in his last four hours and 33 minutes of action at the World Cup.
  • Association wants UK to exempt Nigerians from English test

UK-based Nigerian Community Association Bradford (NCAB) has called on the UK to exempt Nigerians from International English Language Testing System (IELTS).

The President of the association, Mr Adewale Bakare, made the call in a statement made available on Friday in Abuja.

The association is based in Bradford, a municipal metropolitan Borough, West Yorkshire, England.

Bakare, who made the call during the association’s Nigeria Community Immigration Conference in Bradford recently, appealed to the Nigerian High Commission (NHC) in the UK to intervene so Nigerian citizens could be exempted.

He urged the British government to do away with the requirement of passing English language for doctors, nurses and other migrants who want to enter UK.

“Nigeria being a Commonwealth country where English language is widely spoken as lingua franca, we strongly believe should be exempted from the English language test requirements.

“We hereby make representation to the Nigerian High Commissioner, on behalf of many Nigerians living in the UK and pray you to apply to the UK Immigration Authority for the exemption of English language requirements accordingly.

“The association prayed the High Commission to closely look into ways the British government would assist affected Nigerian immigrants,’’ he said.

On the payment of £2,000 by the Home Office, Bakare: “it is possibly one of the most generous Administrative Voluntary Return (AVR) packages in Europe.’’

He, however, said the amount was not enough to reintegrate  migrants in their countries of origin.

“Rather than paying returnees directly in cash, funds should be put for business start-ups or services for them, including vocational training that will help to start a small business or to purchase of tools and equipment.

“This is where the Nigerian High Commissioner can assist the community to negotiate with the Home Office for a better deal, “ he said.

He said that reintegration was a critical step toward achieving sustainable return.

According to him, to prevent further irregular migration, it is particularly important to address the factors that led migrants to leave their countries of origin in the first place, which majorly are on economic factors.

Bakare said skills and access to a regular source of income was crucial to people’s ability to support returnees independently, adding that reintegration support ought to reflect the importance of social reintegration.

“For example, solid social support structures are essential for effective reintegration and provide a safety net beyond work.

“The NHC should take this into account when negotiating better deal for unavoidable deportees with the Home Office.

“It is important to note that even the most generous AVR packages cannot always help returnees to overcome systemic challenges back home.

“Such as there being few jobs in their local area, a limited market for their start-up businesses, or prohibitively high school fees to educate their children,’’ he said.

He said that unless socioeconomic conditions improved in countries of origin some people would seek out a better life in another country.

The association suggested the message should to be passed across to the authorities back home, adding that there was need for more publicity about the availability of voluntary returns.

“It seems many Nigerians are still not aware of what is called `Voluntary Returns`, especially those immigrants living hopelessly in the UK,’’ he said.

  • Breaking!: England Reach World Cup Semi-finals

    MATCH STATS

    • England have qualified for their third World Cup semi-final, also reaching that stage in 1966 and 1990.
    • Sweden have lost three of their last four matches against England (W1), since a run of 12 consecutive matches without defeat against them between 1979 and 2006.

    • Six of England’s last 11 goals against Sweden have been scored via headers, all from different players (Sol Campbell, Steven Gerrard, Gareth Barry, Andy Carroll, Harry Maguire and Dele Alli).
    • England – who scored with both shots on target in this match – have found the net with 10 of their last 13 shots on target at the 2018 World Cup.
    • England have scored 11 goals in a World Cup tournament for only the second time, also doing so in their victorious year of 1966.

    • Harry Maguire scored his first goal for England, and in doing so became the first player to score their first England goal in a World Cup knockout match since Rio Ferdinand in 2002 against Denmark.
    • Jordan Pickford made three saves in this match and kept a clean sheet, making him the youngest England goalkeeper to keep a clean sheet in a World Cup match (24y 122d).
    • England have scored eight goals via set pieces at the 2018 World Cup, the most by a team at a World Cup tournament since Portugal in 1966 (also eight).

GOAL! SWEDEN 0-1 ENGLAND (Maguire, 30)

BANG! England take the lead in emphatic fashion as Harry Maguire rises high to power an Ashley Young corner into the back of the Swedish goal. The set piece specialists strike again, as Maguire scores his first international goal, and what a time for it!

England are playing a line of four in attack. Raheem Sterling and Harry Kane are up front, but Dele Alli and Jesse Lingard look as if they are playing up there with them.

    EMPTY SEATS?

Indications have emerged that there could be as many as 10,000 empty seats for today’s clash at the Samara Arena. Yes, you read that right, 10,000!

The stadium has a capacity of 42,000 but only 32,000 tickets have been sold, officially 2,836 to England fans and 3,000 to Sweden fans.

It’s a shame more people can’t be there to see the game in person but it’s going to take a lot more than that to dampen the optimism and excitement that has England and Sweden gripped at the moment.

    ENGLAND TEAM NEWS

Starting XI: Pickford, Walker, Stones, Maguire, Trippier, Lingard, Henderson, Alli, Young, Sterling, Kane.

England are unchanged from the side who beat Colombia – Ashley Young and Kyle Walker both overcame minor problems which weren’t expected to keep them out anyway.

Jamie Vardy is fit enough to be named on the bench despite a groin injury

    ENGLAND EXPECTANT

So England are preparing for their biggest game in over a decade as they face Sweden for a place in the World Cup semi-finals.

The Three Lions have not reached the last eight of the World Cup since 2006, where defeat by Portugal on penalties in Germany marked the start of a period of underachievement.

But Gareth Southgate’s side now have the country believing that football is on its way home following their dramatic shootout win over Colombia in the last 16.

Now a first World Cup semi-final appearance since the heroics of Italia ’90 is just 90 minutes away for the current crop of English talent. Can they keep the nation dreaming?

    SWEDEN TEAM NEWS

Starting XI: Olsen, Krafth, Lindelof, Granqvist, Augustinsson, Larsson, Ekdal, Forsberg, Claesson, Berg, Toivonen.

Sweden make two changes – both of which were expected. Right-back Mikael Lustig is suspended so Emil Krafth replaces him. And Sebastian Larsson is back from a ban so he takes the place of Gustav Svensson.

    SPOTLIGHT ON SWEDEN

Sweden stand in between England and a place in the World Cup semi-finals but their record against the Swedes does not make good reading, with just two victories in 15 games.

Janne Andersson’s side beat Switzerland in the last 16, and are looking to reach the last four for the first time since 1994.

Sweden’s strengths will undoubtedly come from their defence, which has conceded only two goals in the whole tournament so far – the lowest of any of the remaining nations, with both coming in their 2-1 defeat to Germany in the group stages.

Sweden are the lowest scorers in the tournament too, having scored six goals in four games to date.

  • England Fan gets Three Lions 23-man squad tattoo

Promise they say is a debt.  While  it may not be easy for many to keep the promise especially if there is no law that compels you to keep it, some simply believe that it must be kept once you have declared it.

An England supporter Dan Welch had declared way back in May even before the world cup kicked off on June 14 in Russia that he will have tattoo the England squad on himself if the team makes it to the quarterfinals.   He had tweeted

“Putting my neck on the line, but if @England get to the quarter-finals with that squad, I will get the 23-man squad names tattooed on me.”

Well the Three Lions made it to the quarterfinals and will take on Sweden in one of the quarterfinal ties Saturday at the Samara Arena. The Harry Kane captained team fought a nail biting battle against hard fighting Columbia to zoom into the quarterfinals. The team thus could be said to have done their part now it is time for super fan Dan Welch to keep his and indeed he has done it.  He did not only get the 23-man list tattooed on him he went a step further by adding the name of the coach Gareth Southgate.

Some mothers you may want to say do have them but this certainly is a serious matter, a promise kept. Perhaps the next question you might want to ask is; what will he think of next, if the Three Lions overcome the challenges of Sweden to kiss the semi finals, and then what will follow if they make it to the finals. And now the big one, what happens if they repeat the feat achieved in 1966 when England won the world up?

Time will tell as action continues in Russia. England crashed out in the round of 16 in South Africa in 2010 but were ousted in the Group stage in 2014 in Brazil.

  • Three lions in another jinx battle

The Three Lions of England who just broke a jinx winning penalty shoot outs faces yet another jinx of surviving quarter final matches.

They never progressed beyond this stage when they beat Cameroon in R16 in 1990. The last time they English team appeared in the quarters they lost on penalties to Portugal.

Samara Arena, venue of the match between the Three Lions who Nigerian fans prefer to call ‘Three kittens’, will witness a lot of English fans who are passionate about football. England was the world capital of soccer hooliganism until the 70s when FIFA roared the country into surrender.

England is meeting old foes, Sweden for the 25th time but available statistics show 8 wins for England, 7 for Sweden and 9 draws. In the two times they traded tackles at the world cup, they were draws of 1-1 in 2002 and 2-2 in 2006 all in group stages. Last time they met was at 2012 Euro championship and England ran away with a 3-2 victory.

A check on prediction voting shows a handsome 51% voted for an English victory 20% says it’s gonna be a Swedish win while 29% feels the winner will emerge from penalty shootouts. Disgraced Argentine star, Diego Maradona will not take that stuff. He described England’s victory against Columbia in R16 as “monumental robbery”.

Sweden lives on old commendation as they have been in 5 quarters in the world cup and only lost to Germany in 1934. They appeared in the Semis in 1938, 1958 and 1994 and that was before democracy returned to Nigeria in 1999.

On current ratings, statistics show that England is just a ‘shine shine bobo’ who used Panama to shine scoring 6 goals two of which were penalties. Panama’s scored against them. They beat Tunisia 2-1 and lost to Belgium 0-1 before Columbia got the1-1 equalizer through Mina 90+3’ and The Lions almost got lost in the forest thicket beating Columbia 4-3 on penalties. They were simply lucky.

Harry Kane has 6 goals as the tournament highest scorer but there are Stones with two goals, Raheem Sterling the short but dangerous winger, Young folks like Lingard and Rashford with Pickford in goal who has leaked 4 goals apart from penalty shoot-out. That might be the channel of Sweden’s victory.

Sweden defense is strong looking like steel fence. Out of four countries they have faced, only Germany scored 2 goals against them. The pattern of the scoring could be the key for England’s win. Reus scored 45+3’ and Toni Kroos got the winner in that 2-1 victory in 90+5’.

That tells us Sweden is like the Super Eagles of Nigeria that loses concentration at dying moments of almost all their matches. Injury time in the first half, and injury time in the second half, hmmm. Think about it. Sweden got a penalty to defeat Korea and spanked Mexico neatly 3-0 before stopping the Swiss team 1-0 in R16. Granqvist is highest scorer of the team scoring two penalties against Korea and against Mexico. Larsen their hero is yet to score.

Given the tough defense and the sleekly Swedish movements coupled with a panicky English defense, Sweden should win within regulation time. Did you notice that the VAR was not referred to even once in the England v Columbia match even when players agitated?

It is expected that Russians will fill 0ver 75% space of the 48,000 capacity Fisht Stadium in Sochi built in 2014 for the summer Olympics when Russia and Croatia clash Saturday 1900 WAT. The stadium was turned to a grave yard as the Russian party was K. I. V. a term common to civil service treatment of files keeping in view action of pending decisions.

Russia was super lucky to escape the raid of the power packed Spaniards. Russia had W3, L1, 9GF, GA5 and GD+4. Russia is reaching their first quarters since the country broke in 1990. They were in the quarters 4 times between 1958-1970. Russia and Croatia had met three times before in the qualifiers each time ended goalless but at the Euro 2008 Croatia won. In 2015 during a friendly match in November of 2015 at Rostov Stadium, now one of the venues of the world cup, Croatia won 3-1.

Even soccer pundits did not give the match to Russia, 24% said Russia would win, 44% gives it to Croatia and a 32% say the winner will emerge via penalties. Some five hosts had progressed into the semis, Italy (1990); France (1998); South Korea (2002); Germany (2006) and Brazil (2014).

  • Fayemi’s monthly stipends made me self-reliant, says 85-year-old

As the Ekiti State governorship election inches closer, the electorate are keen in voting for any one who will have their well-being at heart. ODUNAYO OGUNMOLA reports that among those who wish that Dr Kayode Fayemi wins is 85-year-old Madam Victoria Funke Akinyemi who rears goats from savings from stipends she received during Fayemi’s tenure as Ekiti State Governor.

As the Ekiti State governorship election is 10 days away from today, frantic efforts are being made to encourage the electorate to vote for ex-Governor John Kayode Fayemi. Some are also convinced that, with their votes, the man who had his Doctorate degree in War Studies from King’s College, University of London, England, and who specialised in civil-military relations, will win the election with great margin.

Among ardent believers that victory is already his on July 14, is 85-year-old woman, Madam Victoria Funke Akinyemi who has ever remained grateful to Dr Fayemi for his gesture when he was governor of Ekiti State.

The octogenarian, who rears goats from the savings that accrued from the N5, 000 stipends that she received monthly during his administration, has narrated how the monthly stipends received during the tenure of Fayemi changed her life.

Speaking with reporters in her home in Ilasa-Ekiti, Ekiti East Local Government Area of Ekiti State, the woman said she purchased a she-goat from the stipends and now rears goats on commercial basis.

Apart from selling goats to sustain herself, the octogenarian said she also feeds on the animals, even as she gives out some of the meat to others in her neighbourhood.

Describing Fayemi as her “father,” Mrs. Akinyemi urged voters in Ekiti State to vote for the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate in the July 14 election to enable them to enjoy good governance and for more aged people to be taken care of.

According to her, voters should entrust Fayemi with their votes to enjoy regular payment of workers’ salaries, provision of social amenities in rural areas and other benefits enjoyed during his tenure.

She said: “Now I sell goats. It was my father (Fayemi) that gave me the money with which I bought one goat. It was money I saved from the monthly N5, 000 allowances to the aged people received when he was governor.

“In fact, the last time he came to campaign in my community, I presented a goat to him (Fayemi) in appreciation of what he did for me and other aged people during his tenure.

“I purchased a goat from savings of my own stipends and that goat gave birth to more goats  as you can see them here. I sell goats to people who need them and I also kill one from the flock any time I feel like eating goat meat.

“If not for what Fayemi did for us, I wouldn’t have had the opportunity of selling goats to make money years after he had left office.

“I pray from the depth of my heart that Fayemi will win the next election. God will answer his prayers to become governor again to enable more people to benefit from the programmes he has for the state.

“I want people in my community to vote for Fayemi; they should support him to win the next election so that he will pay workers’ salaries and pay stipends to the aged people again.

“We want him to return to Government House again to do those good things for the people. In fact, if it is possible, goats will vote for Fayemi.”

A neighbour to Mama Akinyemi, Mr. Folarin Olaiya said: “Mama was lucky to be selected among the aged people who obtained forms during Fayemi’s administration and she was collecting N5,000 monthly.”

“From the money, she was buying goats for rearing and her goats multiplied. After Fayemi left office as governor, Mama was selling her goats to sustain herself and also feed on the goats.

“We are calling on Dr. Fayemi to come and rescue Ekiti people from the suffering they are going through, including stoppage of those laudable programmes and payment of taxes by our children in their schools.
