    Africa’s number one para badminton player, Eniola Bolaji, has opened her silverware account  for 2026 following her victory yesterday at the Egypt International Championship.

    The Paralympic bronze medallist defeated world No. 7 Halime Yildiz of Turkey 2–0 (21–10, 21–4) at the New Capital Indoor Hall in Cairo.

    The world No. 2 began her campaign with a commanding 2–0 (21–9, 21–10) victory over Yildiz in the opening round before overcoming India’s Tulika Jadgave 2–0 (21–10, 21–7) in the second round.

    Bolaji continued her dominant run by beating India’s Manasi Girishchandra Joshi 2–0 (21–11, 21–13) to set up a semifinal clash against India’s Shivam Yadav Neeraj, which she won convincingly 2–0 (21–10, 21–11).

    An elated President of the Badminton Federation of Nigeria, Francis Orbih, praised the consistency of Eniola Bolaji for continuing to put the country on the global map.

    Orbih said the African champion has repeatedly shown that Nigeria can compete and dominate on the world stage through her impressive performances.

    He said: “I am excited that Eniola Bolaji was able to compete at the Egypt Para Badminton International and win gold once again. In 2025, she began her journey to greatness with a victory in North Africa and went on to win all the available gold medals except one.

     “I strongly believe Bolaji will have an exciting year ahead and will continue to bring pride to Nigeria and the Federation.”

    Orbih also commended the team’s sponsors and the National Sports Commission for their continued support in the development of para badminton.

     “I want to thank GIG Logistics and the National Sports Commission for their unwavering support. I assure you that Eniola Bolaji will continue to give her best in subsequent tournaments,” he added.

    Unstoppable Bolaji leads Nigeria to glory at Africa Para Badminton Championships

    Team Nigeria were crowned overall champions at the 2025 Africa Para Badminton Championships, which concluded Sunday  at the International Conference Centre, Umuahia, Abia State.

    Inspired by Paralympic star Eniola Bolaji, the hosts dominated the continental showpiece, amassing a total of 36 medals — 10 gold, 13 silver, and 13 bronze — to finish top of the standings.

    Other Nigerian gold medallists included Chigozie Nnanna, Chukwuemeka Eze, Ijeoma Chukwuemeka, Mary Nathan, Chinyere Okoro, Munkwoba Goman, and Bello Tukur, who all contributed to Nigeria’s commanding display on home soil.

    Kenya finished second with 11 medals (4 gold, 2 silver, 5 bronze), while Egypt placed third with 8 medals (3 gold, 1 silver, 4 bronze). Benin Republic secured fourth position with one gold, two silver, and two bronze, followed by Congo DR in fifth (one gold, two bronze).

    Other countries on the medal table were Tunisia (one silver, one bronze), Cameroon (six bronze), Zimbabwe, Burkina Faso, and Rwanda (two bronze each), while Mauritius claimed one bronze. Mozambique was the only nation without a medal among the 12 participating countries.

    The championship, which featured 19 events, began on October 7, serving as a remarkable display of skill, determination, and inclusivity across Africa.

    At the closing ceremony, Abia State Governor Alex Otti, represented by the Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development, Nwaobilor Ananaba, congratulated the athletes and hailed the event as “an extraordinary celebration of resilience and unity.”

     “We have learned, improved, and been inspired,” Otti said. “Let me assure you — Abia will bid to host again, and when we do, we will deliver an even greater experience.”

    President of the Badminton Federation of Nigeria (BFN), Francis Orbih, lauded the athletes’ courage and performance, emphasizing that para sports continue to embody the essence of human strength and dignity.

    He also expressed appreciation to the Badminton World Federation and Badminton Confederation of Africa for their support, as well as the Abia State Government for hosting a world-class event.

    The continental championship followed closely on the heels of the First Abia Para Badminton International, held from September 30 to October 5, 2025, where Nigerian stars Bolaji, Nnanna, and Nathan also clinched gold medals.

    Paralympic bronze medallist Eniola Bolaji has claimed the women’s SL3 title at the 2025 British and Irish Para Badminton International, held at the Sport Wales National Centre in Cardiff on Saturday, July 26.

    Bolaji, ranked world No. 2, delivered a gutsy performance to overcome top-ranked and Paralympic champion Qonitah Syakuroh in a thrilling 2-1 (21-16, 16-21, 21-13) final.

    The Nigerian star opened the match with a confident 21-16 win in the first set before Syakuroh responded strongly to take the second set by the same scoreline.

    In the decider, Bolaji trailed until the 13-point mark but showed remarkable composure and resilience, closing out the match with a dominant surge from 11 points to clinch the title.

    The victory marks Bolaji’s biggest international triumph to date and a major milestone in her rising career.

    Her journey to the title began with a 2-0 (21-12, 21-18) win over Australia’s Celine Vinot in the second round.

    She followed up with another straight-sets victory against world No. 10 Milena Surreau of France (21-8, 21-18) and then dismantled India’s Sanjana Kumari 2-0 (21-5, 21-15).

    In the semifinals, Bolaji faced Vinot once again and produced a dominant display, winning 2-0 (21-4, 21-8) to advance to the championship match.

    Paralympic bronze medallist, Eniola Bolaji, has been named the recipient of the 2024 Africa Women in Badminton Award (AWIBA), in recognition of her outstanding achievements and inspiring journey in para-badminton.

    The prestigious award was presented during the Badminton Confederation Africa (BCA) Annual General Meeting held  yesterday ,  April 24, in China.

    Bolaji, a multiple-time African champion, becomes the second Nigerian to receive the honour, following in the footsteps of badminton veteran Obiageli Solaja who received the award in 2019.

    Receiving the award on her behalf, President of the Badminton Federation of Nigeria (BFN), Francis Orbih, described the recognition as timely and well-deserved. He commended Bolaji’s dedication and trailblazing accomplishments, noting her impact on the growth of para-badminton in Africa.

    “I am extremely proud of Eniola Bolaji. This award reflects the BCA’s recognition of her remarkable progress,” Orbih said. “As the first African to win a medal in badminton or para-badminton at the Olympics or Paralympics, I believe she is only just beginning to make her mark on the global stage.

    “This award will not only motivate Eniola but also inspire a new generation of Nigerian and African para-badminton players. It shows that their efforts are being noticed and celebrated.”

    Orbih also extended his appreciation to the new leadership of the National Sports Commission, led by Shehu Dikko, for the way they have continuously demonstrated that there is a breath of fresh air in sports in Nigeria.

    Looking ahead, Orbih highlighted Nigeria’s readiness to host two international para-badminton championships in Abia State this September/October.

    “We are looking forward to delivering world-class events. This is an exciting moment for Nigerian badminton, and we intend to set a new benchmark,” he added.

    World’s  number 2 Eniola Bolaji has solidified her dominance in para-badminton SL3 by winning her second medal in two weeks.

    The Paralympic bronze medallist beat Turkey’s Halime Yildiz 2-0 (21-7, 21-10) in the women’s final at the Spanish Para-Badminton International 2025 in Toledo, Spain.

    Bolaji began her campaign by defeating India’s Sanjana Kumari 2-0 in the second round, followed by another  2-0 win over Turkey’s Halime Yildiz in the third round. She then dispatched Ukraine’s Oksana Kozyba 2-0 in the semi-final before yesterday’s triumph over Yildiz.

    President of the Badminton Federation of Nigeria, Francis Orbih, praised Bolaji’s resilience and unbroken record-breaking achievements in para-badminton, highlighting her status as the only African player to win 12 gold medals in as many  internationals.

    Orbih said: “I extend my heartfelt congratulations to Eniola Bolaji on her incredible achievement of winning her 12th  gold medal in as many international tournaments. This remarkable feat is a testament to her consistency, resilience, and unwavering dedication to excellence.”

    He continued: “Bolaji has not only made Nigeria proud but has also firmly stamped her authority in the world of para-badminton. Her journey continues to inspire many, and we at the Badminton Federation of Nigeria remain committed to supporting her as she reaches even greater heights.”

    Orbih  also expressed excitement about the upcoming All-African Para Badminton/Abia international Para badminton Championships, which will provide an opportunity to showcase the country’s rich badminton culture.

    He said: “We thank Abia state government for accepting to host this two historic events. It gives me joy that the giants of Africa in Para badminton will be hosting an international championship and the African championship in Nigeria.     Meanwhile, National Sports Commission (NSC)  Chairman, Mallam Shehu Dikko,  has commended the Nigerian contingent at the 2025 Spanish para-badminton International following  the impressive outing that saw them  secured a gold and a bronze medal in Toledo, Spain.

    “These athletes have once again showcased the resilience and talent that define Nigerian sports. Their success is a lucid indication of their hard work and the strategic leadership we demand from the Badminton Federation and other sports federations. We are proud of them and remain committed to supporting their journey to greater heights,” Dikko said.

    Paralympic bronze medallist Eniola has added another prestigious gold medal to her collection, winning at the 2025 Spanish Para Badminton International II in Vitoria.

    This makes it 11 out of 11 in internationals she has played so far.

    The multiple African champion convincingly beat Ukraine’s Oksana Kozyba 2-0 (21-15, 21-15) dominating the women’s singles SL3 final category.

    Bolaji’s path to gold was nothing short of impressive. She first defeated Brazil’s Kauana Michelson Beckenka of Brazil 2-0 (21-15, 21-2) and then France’s Caroline Bergeron 2-0 (21-7, 21-8) at the group stage before cruising through the quarterfinals, where she beat Australia’s Celine Vinot 2-0 (21-8, 21-12).

    In the semi-finals, Bolaji showcased her exceptional form with a dominant 2-0 (21-12, 21-6) win over India’s Neeraj, booking her spot in the final.

    President of Badminton Federation of Nigeria, Francis Orbih praised Bolaji’s remarkable achievement, noting that the gold marks her second in just two months.

    Orbih expressed confidence in the Federation’s ongoing investment in Paralympic athletes, emphasising continued support for Bolaji and other para badminton players.

     “One of our focus as a Federation is to ensure more players qualify for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and Paralympics,” he added.

    To get this point, Bolaji won all her previous games in the competition hosted by Egypt.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Bolaji defeated Sweden’s Hillevi Salomonsson 2-0 (21-1, 21-2) in the women’s SL3 final on Sunday in Cairo Egypt.

    The African champion demonstrated her skill throughout the tournament, beating Shahinda Mohamed (21-7, 21-2).

    She also defeated Basma Nabil-Fawzy (21-6, 21-4) and further conquered Elizabeth Puma (21-2, 21-4) with straight-set victories in earlier rounds.

    According to the Badminton World Federation (BWF), Bolaji has competed in 10 international championships over the past two years, emerging victorious in all.

    This is a remarkable feat that bonds her as a force to be reckoned with in Para Badminton.

    She broke multiple records and brought pride to Nigeria and Africa.

    Bolaji’s achievement followed her radical success in 2024 where she made history as the first African athlete to win a badminton medal at the Paralympic Games

    African Badminton Champion, Eniola Bolaji  says her full attention is on the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games.

    Bolaji will represent Nigeria in the women’s SL3 category at the Paralympics which will be held between 29th August to 2nd September at the La Chapelle Arena in Paris, France.

    The World number three told www.aclsports.com that she is not under pressure to win a medal for the country at the Games, expressing delight to be the first female para-badminton player to feature at the Paralympics.

    Bolaji revealed that the last four months in Spain have exposed her to standard facilities and new techniques in the game.

    She said: “All my attention has been shifted to the biggest sports event in the world, the Paralympics. The dream of every para-athlete is to be at the Paralympics and ultimately win a medal.

    “After my international engagements in Spain four months ago, the Badminton Federation of Nigeria (BFN) in collaboration with Badminton Confederation Africa (BCA) in their wisdom made a great move for me to remain in Spain and train hard. 

    “I am happy the plan worked out because I have access to one of the best training facilities in the world, which has helped shape my playing pattern. I am a much better player and cannot be compared to when I trained strictly in Nigeria.”

    Badminton: Eniola Bolaji rises to World number 7

    Multiple National Para Badminton Champion, Eniola Bolaji has moved up to World number seven in the Women’s SL3 according to the World Para Badminton Governing Body.

    Bolaji moved three places from number 10 to number 7 with 39550 points after she excelled at the recently concluded Spanish Para Badminton International Championship 2024 in Victoria, Spain.

    The Kwara-born player overwhelmed world number 6, Oksana Kozyna from Ukraine 2-0 (21-13, 21-8) to clinch the gold medal in the women’s SL3 at the 2024 Spanish Championship which ended on 21st April.

    Bolaji described the world ranking leap as a call for more hard work as she dedicated her current achievements and feat to her Late coach, Bello Oyebanji who died in a ghastly car accident along Oyo/Ogbomosho expressway in 2021 on his way to Ilorin after securing his visa ahead of an Olympic qualifier in preparatory for the Tokyo Paralympics.

     “I am happy for my steady progression in para badminton because I never say this is coming within this short period. Not many people knew I was ranked number 8 in the world but my ranking dropped because I could not attend some International Championship,” Bolaji said in an interview.

     “I am dedicating my current ranking to my Late Coach, Bello Oyebanji because he made a lot of sacrifice for me when he was alive. I also want to thank the Badminton Federation of Nigeria (BFN) led by Francis Orbih as well as the Kwara State Government for the support”.
