    Breeding leaders through entrepreneurship

    In its effort to make entrepreneurship attractive to students, Enactus, a non-governmental organisation, has held three-day training for students of tertiary institutions. Participants came from 38 public and private higher institutions, which included University of Ibadan (UI), Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, University of Ilorin (UNILORIN), Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Delta State University (DELSU), Al-Hikmah University (ALHIKMAH), Ilorin, and Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO) among others.

    The training was held at Joseph Ayo-Babalola University (JABU), Ikeji Arakeji, Osun State and had over 300 Enactus students in attendance.

    The Consulate-General of the Embassy of the United States, Mr Jeffery Hawkins, graced the event with Faculty Advisers from the 38 institutions. Hawkins was represented by Public Affairs Officer of the embassy, Dehab Ghebreab and Director Information Resource Centre, Dr Samuel Eyitayo.

    The training focused on ways to improve the quality of outreach projects, which will be embarked on by the Enactus teams in the participating institutions.

    The Programme Manager, Mr Mike Ajayi, who spoke on behalf of Enactus network, said the mission and the objective of the training was to make Enactus the premium campus entrepreneurship programme for aspiring students. He said that the training was to help build the capacity of the Enactus team to develop quality projects that would have sustainable and measurable impacts.

    He added that the activities of the NGO had been endorsed by the National Universities Commission (NUC) and National Board Technical Education (NBTE) and the institutions.

    Representatives of the US Consulate-General addressed the students on the procedures to follow in securing admission for Master’s degree in the United States. They also advised on the visa procedures.

    Olajide Omojarabi, 300-Level International Studies, ABU, told CAMPUSLIFE: “This training is timely because it presents discussion on ways Nigerian youths can be leaders in their fields. The training helps students to acquire necessary skills to become business leaders right from the campus. I am happy to be part of the team from ABU.”

    Chris Nwosu, 400-Level Agricultural Economics, FUTO, said: “The training will make the Enactus team in FUTO to embark on better projects, which will, in turn, have direct impact on the people living in rural communities.”

  • Organisation offers tips on entrepreneurship

    Poised to aid economic development and support the improvement of business environment across the country, the Growth and Employment in States 3 (GEMS3), an initiative of the United Kingdom’s arm of the Department For International Development, DFID, has launched its inaugural Public Private Engagement Mechanism meeting.

    The event, which took place in Lagos, saw the coming together of key stakeholders from the government and private sector in a round-table session to discuss challenges faced by the private sector and proffer solutions for progress.

    While addressing the participants, the country project director of GEMS3, Dr. Layth Bunni said, “The aim of the meeting is to try and identify as well as create a deep understanding of why Nigerians in the business sector face the issues they encounter and find a way to come up with proper well-thought through solutions so that they can achieve long-lasting results.”

    Highlighting some of the successes they have recorded, Bunni said, “Most of the projects we have been able to pull through have been around the themes of taxation, land use and general investments by working with the State governments in harmonizing the laws and the implementation of these laws in a fair manner for everyone.”

    Also speaking at the event was the Director General, Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Mr. Mudu Yusuf, who gave insight on some of governments excesses as well as the impact of the recession on the Nigerian economy; “The problems faced by the average Nigerian trying to do business are cumbersome and are often caused by irregularities or non-implementation of government policies,” he said.

     

     

     

     

     

     

     

     

     

     

     

     

  • Foundation trains 25 in entrepreneurship

    About 25 people have graduated from an entrepreneurship and internship mentoring scheme in Abuja. The mentoring programme, which aims at enhancing self-sufficiency among youths was organised by the Afrigrowth Foundation.

    The foundation also plans to use the programme to develop a learning centre which will be committed to conducting trainings that would strengthen the internal coordination of civil society groups.

    The graduating students were full of excitement as they file out to receive their certificates of participation.
    President of Afrigrowth Foundation, Mrs Dayo Keshi who spoke at the graduation ceremony of the third batch of the mentorship training said the graduating set really made the foundation proud through their commitment and resilience.

    She added that another batch of 25 will also receive training to bring to 100 the number of those that have been trained by the foundation.

    “They have been trained in entrepreneurial skills, leadership abilities, and the social media so that they will become future employers of labour. This will make them not to depend on non-existent white collar jobs,” she said.

    The Guest of Honour at the ceremony, Innocent Enejo enjoined the graduates to be committed in what they do in order to succeed as entrepreneurs.

    “You must be resilient, desperate and passionate to succeed. You should have a prepared mind as it is not the function of what you have learnt in school but the zeal and commitment in you to make it in life.

    “Don’t outspend your money before they come. Dream big and don’t give up as there are many opportunities for you outside there that you can tap from,” he said

    The Executive Director of the TY Danjuma Foundation, Lady Amedormey, who commended the training ability of Afrigrowth Foundation said TY Foundation will be sponsoring the 100 mentees with the sum of N6m.

    Highlight of the ceremony were presentation of prizes and certificates to participants as well as the presentation of business plans by the graduating students.
