  • We are ready for LG Congresses in Enugu says APC Chairman

    All Progressives Congress ( APC ) in Enugu State says it has concluded all arrangements to hold a hitch-free, credible and transparent Local Government Congresses in the state on Saturday.

    The Chairman of APC in Enugu State, Dr Ben Nwoye, told the News men in Enugu on Wednesday that the party executive had got the approval of the Independent National Electoral Commission ( INEC ) for the exercise.

    Nwoye said that the party had also met with the Commissioner of Police and Divisional Police Officers to detail their personnel to various venues to ensure orderliness.

    “We are ready for the local government congresses on Saturday in the state.

    “We have met other agencies and organisations needed for the exercise and they had given us clearance to go ahead with the exercise.

    “The national officers to supervise the exercise are already in the state as I am speaking with you,’’ he said.

    According to him, the exercise will be held at the 17 local government offices of the party or any public place the party members feel comfortable with, going with the high numeric strength of APC in local councils in the state.

    Nwoye however, assured that the congresses would be hitch-free, credible and transparent just as the Ward Congresses held on May 5 in the state.

    “APC is a party known for orderliness and transparency, just as we displayed on Saturday, May 5, during the Ward Congresses in the state.

    “The forthcoming Local Government Congresses on Saturday, May 12, will be open, hitch-free, credible and transparent as well,’’ he added.

  • Enugu: Son allegedly hacks 83-year-old father to death

    Enugu State Police Command has commenced investigation into the alleged killing of a father by his son at Ojinato, a community in the state.

    The Command’s spokesman, SP Ebere Amaraizu, said in a statement in Enugu on Tuesday that the incident happened on May 4.

    According to the statement, the suspect’s real name has not been established but investigation is continuing.

    It said that the deceased, Pa Nathaniel Chukwuemerie, 83, who hailed from Ogidi in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra, was killed by his son simply known as `The Boy’.

    The statement explained that Chukwuemerie, who resides at Ojinato community in the state “met his death when his son identified as a.k.a. `The Boy’ smashed his father’s head with pestle over a yet to be established issue.’’

    It noted that following the development, the victim was rushed by sympathizers to a nearby hospital where he was confirmed dead by a doctor, and the corpse was subsequently deposited at the Oji River General Hospital morgue.

    “The suspect has been nabbed although information from a source closer to the place of the incident revealed that before the incident that the suspect had been behaving abnormally suggesting mental illness,’’ the statement added.

  • 16 football clubs lock horns in 2018 Enugu State Federation Cup

    No fewer than 16 football clubs within Enugu State will be locking horns in the 2018 edition of Enugu State Federation Cup. The newsmen report that states’ Federation Cup is a prelude to the National Federation Cup, which comprises of 62 teams.

    Francis Ugwu, Secretary of Enugu State Football Association, told the newsmen on Tuesday in Enugu that the state’s Federation Cup matches would be a 21 days football fiesta in the state.

    Ugwu said that it would commence on May 5; while the finals would be played on May 26. He noted that all the matches would be played at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu. “The Federation Cup by its nature is a knock out tournament.

    “Where clubs must win each match; or loss and crush out of the tournament.

    “We are expecting that among the 16 clubs, a winner and a runners-up will emerge and they will represent the state at the National Federation Cup coming up later in the year,’’ he said.

    Ugwu said that the clubs participating in the 2018 edition included: Rangers International FC, Crime Busters FC, Purple Krown FC and Vemard Africa FC. Others are: Ingas International FC, El-Nahog FC, FC International, Flying Angels FC, Samba FC and Disdevt FC.

    Also participating are: Enugu Angels FC, Coal City Youths FC, FC Miserere, Lamray FC, FC Star-Plus and Rangers Feeders FC.

  • Police investigates alleged drinking of poison by mother in Enugu

    The Police Command in Enugu State has commenced investigation into the circumstances that led to an alleged drinking of rat poison by a mother of three in Enugu City.

    The command’s spokesman, SP Ebere Amaraizu, said in a statement on Sunday in Enugu that the incident occurred on April 28.

    Amaraizu said that the incident took place at number 10 Umuezeoha Ojotta Street in Awkunanaw in Enugu South Local Government Area.

    According to him, the incident threw the entire Awkunanaw area into confusion.

    “It was gathered that the victim identified as Nkechi Nwakwe and a mother of three children, had allegedly on that fateful day taken a rat killer medicine with a view to taking her life.

    “It was further gathered from sources that the woman is having some unresolved issues with her husband identified as Ugochukwu Nwakwe, and on that note decided to take rat killer in order to take her own life,’’ he said.

    The spokesman said the woman was promptly rushed to Good Shepherd Hospital, Uwani, in Enugu and was now responding to treatment.

  • Police nab suspected armed robber in Enugu, recover stolen tricycle

    The Enugu State Police Command said that it had arrested a suspected armed robber, who specialized in snatching tricycle, popularly known as “Keke Napep’’ within Enugu metropolis.

    The command’s spokesman, SP Ebere Amaraizu, via a statement issued on Thursday in Enugu, said the suspect was arrested on April 8, and a stolen tricycle recovered him.

     He said that the operatives from the Central Police Station, Enugu, acted swiftly after receiving a tip-off from members of the public.

    “It was gathered that the suspect alongside his cohorts now at large, had allegedly at gun point robbed their victim of his tricycle with registration number UWN 418 QK at Mbanugo Coal Camp axis of Enugu and escaped.

    “Through a distress call received, police operatives swung into action and gave the hoodlums hot chase which paid off as one of the hoodlums was promptly nabbed while others escaped.

    “Recovered from the suspect is the said tricycle,’’ he said.

    The spokesman said that the suspect had been helping police operatives in their investigation, while manhunt on the fleeing members of his gang members is continuing.

  • Police nab suspected armed robber, cultist in Enugu

    The Police Command in Enugu State has arrested a suspected notorious armed robber and cultist who had been terrorising members of Ibagwa Nike community of Enugu East Local Government Area.

    The suspect, Sopuruchukwu Anike, 24, also claimed to be from  Ibagwa Nike community.

    The Command’s spokesman, SP Ebere Amaraizu, made the disclosure in a statement on Tuesday in Enugu.

    Amaraizu said that a single barrel gun which the suspect and his cohorts used in unleashing mayhem on their victims was recovered during the operation

    He said the suspect was arrested by operatives attached to the Anti-Cultism Unit of the command on April 9.

    Amaraizu said that the suspect and his cohorts usually robbed their victims at gunpoint and dispossessed them of their telephones, money and other valuables.

    He said that the suspect also confessed to being a member of the Aye confraternity.

    The police spokesman said that the suspect said he bought the gun from one of his cohorts, Ikenna, who is currently in prison custody.

    He said that the suspect joined the cult in 2016 and thereafter, dropped out from school in Senior Secondary one.

    Amaraizu said that a full scale investigation had commenced into the incident.

  • Father hacks son to death in Enugu

    The Police in Enugu State have launched a manhunt for one, Onyenwe Offor Ajah, who allegedly hacked his son to death in an Enugu community.

    The police spokesman in the state, SP Ebere Amaraizu, said in a statement on Wednesday that the incident occurred on March 28 at Ameke Enu village in Oduma Community of Aninri Local Government Area of the state.

    Amaraizu said the son whom he allegedly killed after a disagreement, had been identified as Kenneth Ajah, 38.

    He said the suspect had a misunderstanding over some yet-to-be established issues with his son, which started at Orie Oduma Market.

    “It was further gathered that following the alleged misunderstanding, there arose a fight between the father and his son, which resulted to the use of an object to hit the victim on his head by the father.

    “The son, however, became unconscious and was rushed to a nearby hospital and was later confirmed dead by a doctor on duty,’’ he said.

    Amaraizu said that the deceased’s body had been deposited at Awgu District General Hospital Mortuary; while a manhunt for the fleeing suspect had been intensified.

  • Nsukka plans to build legislative chamber for councilors

    Mr Patrick Omeje, the Chairman, Nsukka Local Government Area of Enugu State, says the council has concluded plans to construct a legislative chamber for councilors.

    Omeje who spoke in Nsukka, when he briefed traditional rulers, stakeholders and residents on his 100 days in office, said the legislative building would also

    provide office accommodation for the councilors. “Plans have been concluded to build a legislative chamber and soonest the council will start the building.

    “The building will provide office accommodation for the 20 councilors and legislative support staff.

    “The present situation, where councilors are using the LGA hall for their sitting, gives me concern,” he said.

     The council boss expressed satisfaction on the good working relationship between the executive and the legislature, and called for sustenance, in order to move the LGA to the next level.

    Omeje said his administration had given issues concerning education, health, agriculture, as well as grading of roads priority.

     “When I assumed office, going to Ehe-ndiagu was a nightmare as a result of bad road, but today, farmers in that community can bring their farm produce to Nsukka town with ease,’’ he said.

    The chairman said the council had opened livestock section at lkpa Commodity Market, so that residents would not go long distances for their livestock needs during ceremonies and festivities.

     He said his administration had empowered many youths as well as appointed them into various positions to enable them contribute their quota in the development of the area.

    “My administration appointed 20 special assistants, 60 executive assistants, 40 road marshals and 40 environmental marshals, all of them youths,’’ he said.

     Mr Fabian Onah, PDP Chairman in Nsukka LGA, expressed satisfaction on Omeje’s performance in 100 days and solicited for continued support for him.

    The traditional ruler of Nru community, Igwe Sylvanus Arum, who also spoke, said the administration of Omeje had ensured peace and unity in the LGA.

    He urged the council chairman to sustain his leadership style.  The leader of the  legislative council, Mr Chinedu Eze, who also spoke, said the  legislature  would continue to work harmoniously with the executive in order to move Nsukka LGA to the next level.

    Eze expressed happiness on the plans of the Omeje’s administration to build a legislative chamber for councilors.

    “Present councilors and future ones will remain grateful to your administration if your administration actualise this plan of building a legislative chamber in Nsukka LGA for councilors, ”  he said.

  • Police investigates attempted gang-rape in Enugu

    The Police Command in Enugu State has begun investigation on the alleged attempted gang-raping by some suspected youths in the state during a musical concert.

    The command’s spokesman, Superintendent of Police Ebere Amaraizu, announced this in Enugu on Monday in a statement.

    He said that police operatives of the Independence Layout Division of the command arrested the suspects at Michael Okpara Square, Enugu, on March 31.

    “It was gathered that one person who is already helping police operatives in their investigations have been arrested for his alleged role in the attempt to gang-rape a victim at Michael Okpara Square axis during a musical concert.

    “Also arrested were three others in relation to alleged offences of snatching and stealing of cell phones during the event.

    “Those arrested will be made to face the music in line with various provisions and specifications of the law after a full investigation,” he said.

  • Police declare couple wanted over alleged N63m fraud

    The Police Command in Enugu State has declared a couple wanted for alleged N63 million forgery and fraud in a mortgage institution.

    The command’s spokesman, SP Ebere Amaraizu, said in a statement in Enugu on Thursday that the Criminal Intelligence and Investigations Department had commenced a full scale investigation into the matter.

    Amaraizu said that the wife, Mrs Chinyere Amalunweze, 36, a native of Umuegbu Ego village in Nnobi community in Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra, is fair in complexion and a former staff of a mortgage institution.

    He noted that her husband, Mr Tony Amalunweze, 38, from Umulumgbe community in Udi Local Government Area of Enugu, who resides at No. 2a Akpugo St. Independence Layout, Enugu, is dark in complexion.

    “They were alleged to have been involved in alleged case of conspiracy, forgery and fraud in which they defrauded a mortgage institution up to the tune of N63 million and escaped.

    “The command is requesting members of the public with relevant information about how they can be traced, to report promptly to any nearest police station in the state for necessary action.

    “The command had already issued a warrant of arrest against the suspects,’’ he said.
