The Police Command in Enugu State has concluded arrangements to carry out a pro-active security sensitisation for school operators and owners to check cases of abduction of pupils and students.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Ebere Amaraizu, told NAN in Enugu on Sunday that the sensitisation would stress the need for school operators and owners to be security conscious.

He noted that the sensitisation would also cover partnership with relevant security agencies toward ensuring a safe and secured school environment in the state.

“The first phase of the programme will commence around first week of November 2016.

“We have started circulating information and correspondences concerning the programme.

“The command would involve critical stakeholders, offices and personalities on the programme as well as journalists to spread the security message.

“The programme is mapped out in order to sensitise various school operators and owners with a view to making them security conscious.

“This would help in the actualisation of the principles of pro-active policing the command is noted for,’’ he said.

Amaraizu said that the first edition of the school operators and owners sensitization is part of the expanded programme of Police Campaign Against Cultism and Other Vices (POCACOV).

NAN recalls that two weeks ago pupils and lecturers of Junior Model College, Igbonla, Epe in Lagos State were abducted.

The Federal Government through negotiation is already securing the release of over 200 school girls abducted in Government Girls’ Secondary School, Chibok , Borno, kidnapped by Boko Haram in 2014.

Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, on Monday showered praises on the Rangers International Football Club of Enugu for their gallantry and clinching of the Nigeria Football Professional League, NPLF, title in Enugu on Sunday.

A statement by his media aide, Uche Anichukwu, said that Senator Ekweremadu who was at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium to cheer the Flying Antelopes during their last match for the season against the El Kanemi Warriors of Maiduguri, noted that Rangers had won something more than a league title for their teeming supporters across the world.

It said that a highly elated Ekweremadu, who was in the company of the Governor of Enugu State, Rt. Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, said: “I want to congratulate the players, the management of Rangers, and indeed the Government and good people of Enugu State on this emphatic victory and the reclaim of the league title after a 32-year wait full of disappointments.

“Those who know the history of Rangers understand why this great achievement will resonate across the length and breadth of the South East and South South especially, and indeed every part of the nation and the world where you find rangers fans.

“For us, this is more than just a league title. This is a huge revival, morale booster, and comfort. It is one great achievement that refreshes memories and our survival instincts as a people. It is a reminder to all our people that though sorrow may endure for a night, joy surely comes in the morning”.

It said that Senator Ekweremadu described the Governor of Enugu State, Rt. Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, as a jinx breaker and commended him for his fatherly support and encouragement, which spurred the team to victory.

It also said that Ekweremadu assured that Rangers’ successful defence of the league title and their continental campaign in the coming season would be the collective task of all.

While commending the improvements in the NPFL, the Deputy President of the Senate, however, called for more private sector support and greater commitment by the nation’s football managers to lift the round leather game higher in Nigeria.

Herdsmen attack: Coalition seeks rebuilding of Enugu community

A coalition of NGOs in Enugu State has called on Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi to urgently rebuild Nimbo community in Uzouwani Local Government Area which was attacked by suspected criminal herdsmen in April.

The coalition made the call in Nimbo on Tuesday when it donated some relief materials to victims of the attack in the community.

The group led by the Executive Director of the Carmelites Prisoners’ Interest Organisation (CAPIO), Rev. Fr. Ambrose Ekeroku, also urged government to pay more attention to the development of rural areas.

“It is evident that life in rural areas has remained rustic where the inhabitants lack even the most basic of amenities while those in the metropolis have a surfeit of such amenities.

“That situation has become untenable considering the environmental risks the inhabitants of the rural areas are exposed to.

“The government should embark on extensive agricultural activities in Nimbo which is an agrarian community rather than abandoning the people to an agrarian subsistence existence.

“Government’s failure to exploit the agricultural potentials of the community is akin to abandoning the people to devilish whims of the herdsmen who are attracted to the lush grass in the area.

“A stronger government presence in Nimbo and other communities in the council will attract investors in the agriculture sector and the untapped potentials of Nimbo,” he said.

Ekeroku said that such presence would definitely keep the herdsmen away.

He also urged government to use the Nimbo incident to review its policy on development of rural areas.

At the palace of the traditional ruler of Nimbo, Igwe John Akor, the director condoled with the community on the losses of lives and property during the mayhem.

The traditional ruler, on his part, thanked the group for the visit and donation, saying government and other organisations were doing their best to rehabilitate the people.

The leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the south east has demanded an end to the wanton killings of innocent Nigerians and destruction of villages and farmlands by so called Fulani Herdsmen as well as reprisals attacks.

Yesterday it was Agatu in Benue State; today it is Ukpabio Nimbo in Enugu State. It must stop.

“May we use this opportunity to deeply commiserate with the families of the bereaved; in particular the people and government of Benue and Enugu States. God in his infinite mercy will surely heal the wounds.

“In sum, we appeal for calm and urge all to take solace on the truism that the Federal Government of Nigeria under President Muhammadu Buhari is quietly working round the clock to stop the bloodletting, fish out the culprits and the masterminds who equip the Herdsmen with sophisticated weapons.”

“Enugu State is a no go area for all criminals and that any criminal that manages to succeed, we will pursue him swiftly, decisively and zealously until we hunt him or her down.

“We are putting behind us the misdeeds of some few elements, who try to cause anxiety.

  • 64 million Nigerians are mentally sick- Nebo

64 million Nigerians are mentally sick- Nebo

Former Power Minister, Prof. Chinedu Nebo, Monday in Enugu rated governments at various levels low in the area of psychiatric and mental health care.

He said this was worrisome considering that some medical scholars have revealed that in a population of 160 million or thereabout, “it is speculated that 64 million Nigerians suffer from one form or the other of afflictions of mental illness- deserving attention”.

Nebo spoke as a guest lecturer at the 2nd Public Lecture organized by the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Enugu in collaboration with the West African College of Nursing.

Speaking on the theme: “Psychiatric and Mental Health in Nigeria: Challenges and Prospects”, the former minister said whereas government had done much in the area of Primary Health Care, much was yet to be done in the area of psychiatric and mental health.

“I will confess that while Government has built modern diagnostic centres, dialysis and ophthalmological centres, and constructed more than 710 Primary Health Care Centres throughout our political wards in Enugu State, we are only beginning to give priority towards optimizing and modernizing our Psychiatric Mental Health Institutions in the State to meet required demands.

“Despite the efforts of all levels of government in the medical sector of our nation, Nigerians still grapple with many social challenges, including poverty, high level of unemployment and other social pressures.

“The prevalence of these situations have been escalated by the fact that there is high level of poor knowledge and understanding of the malaise of mental health disorder and the positive treatments required by the growing population of mentally ill patients,”he stated.

He identified causes of mental illness to include genetic composition, early development, neurological and psychological experiences and environmental stresses.

While calling for increased awareness on the treatment and management of mental disorder, Nebo said “the belief that many Nigerians seem to hold that mental disorder is a result of supernatural forces and, therefore, only responds to cure through traditional practices and supernatural incantations- must give way and face the realities of modern conditions, which in fact, produce the stresses that lead to different level of mental conditions”.

He called for adequate funding for research and training of mental health manpower, stressing that “this will increase our output of psychiatric nurses and create more positions for residency training in psychiatric”.

Nebo equally advocated for community based mental health care services, total integration of the mental health care into the Primary Health Care System and periodic review of legislation governing the care of the mentally ill.

The Chief Medical Director of the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Enugu, Dr. Jojo Onwukwe said the institution was the only one of its kind, East of the Niger, with staff strength of 1000 workers, including eight consultants specialist psychiatrists, more than 400 psychiatric nurses and 27 resident doctors.

Enugu State Governor, Rt. Hon Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi was represented at the event by his commissioner for special duty, Mrs. Rita Mba, while former Governor Sullivan Chime, represented by his son, Nnamdi Chime, was inducted into the institution’s hall of fame.
