    Southeast senators mourn victims of Enugu tanker tragedy, call for action

    The South East Senate caucus has expressed deep shock and sorrow over the tragic loss of lives caused by a fallen petrol tanker at Ugwu Onyema in Enugu.

    In a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja by its leader, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, the caucus also lamented a similar incident that occurred in Niger State the previous weekend, describing the recurring tragedies as “one too many.”

    Senator Abaribe decried the frequent loss of lives due to avoidable road accidents, urging relevant authorities to take immediate action to prevent future occurrences.

    The caucus expressed concern that innocent road users are increasingly falling victim to accidents, which it attributed to the neglect of the nation’s highways by traffic management agencies.

    “It’s sorrowful and very unfortunate that we will lose many of our people, whose total number is yet to be ascertained barely a week after similar incident in Niger State, which pain and shock Nigeria is yet to recover from.

    “It is high time the traffic managers step up their game. The frequency of this accidents now constitutes a total embarrassment to the country.

    “We can’t continue loosing our people this way,” Abaribe said.

    However, he extended the caucus’ condolences to the victims’ families, the governor, government and people of Enugu State.

    Deputy speaker mourns victims of Enugu tanker explosion

    Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has expressed sadness over the death of an ever person in Enugu state as a result of a fire caused by a fuel tanker explosion.

    Several other persons are currently receiving treatment in the hospital in Enugu as a result of the explosion.

    The incident occurred on Saturday, along the 9th Mile/82 Division Expressway, Ugwuonyeama section, when a truck loaded with Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) reportedly collided with some vehicles and erupted in flames, killing several persons.

    In a statement, by his special assistant, press affairs, Udora Orizu, the deputy speaker condoled the families of the victims as well as the government and people of Enugu State, praying to God to grant them the fortitude to bear the loss.

    He recalled a similar incident that recently happened in Niger state, urging the federal government to urgently direct relevant authorities to complete the rehabilitation of the road and others to forestall further occurrences.

    The deputy speaker also stressed the need for relevant authorities to provide safety measures and educate citizens to prevent such tragedies in the future.

    While wishing the injured quick recovery, Kalu also urged the relevant government agencies to provide relief materials to the bereaved, adding that the National Assembly will continue to support the Federal government through budgetary allocation and legislative instruments.

    He said: “I’m deeply saddened by the news of the fuel tanker explosion in Enugu State yesterday which caused the death of several people, with many also injured. This horrific incident happened just days after another tanker exploded in Niger State with over 80 people killed.

    “I’m deeply concerned, it’s been one death too many. I extend my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families as well as the government and the people of Enugu state.

    “I also want to use this opportunity to urge the federal government to take immediate action to address the deplorable state of our roads, especially the 9th-mile expressway, provide safety measures, and educate citizens to help prevent such tragedies in the future. It’s our responsibility to act now and protect ourselves.”
