  • IPOB’s sit-at-home order fails in Enugu, Owerri, Awka

The sit at home ordered by the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) was a total failure in Enugu and Imo states as well as Awka, the Anambra Sate capital, yesterday.

It was also largely ignored in Umuahia, the Abia State capital, although there was partial compliance in Aba, the commercial nerve centre of Abia State and Onitsha and Nnewi both in Anambra State.

Business and social activities were in full swing in Enugu, Owerri the Imo State capital and Awka all day.

Offices and banks opened as usual for business.

Police personnel were seen at various strategic points ready to contain any ugly incident that might arise.

IPOB had ordered the sit-at-home to mark the one year anniversary of the ‘invasion’ of the Afara,Umuahia residence of its leader, Nnamdi Kanu.

A generator repairer at the New Layout, Enugu who simply gave his name as Okwudili, ýsaid he had no reason to sit at home when ”I have my children to feed and IPOB will not place any food on my table.”

The Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB)-led Ralph Uwazuruike  had dissociated itself from the sit-at-home order and called on the people of South East and South South to go about their businesses.

The MASSOB-BIM said such sit-at-home call was misplaced and not what Biafrans needed at the moment.

“All this sit-at-home and the rest of them are of no use. Today, we are rejoicing because we already have success in our Biafra struggle; we are only waiting for the official announcement,” it said.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr. Mohammed Danmallam, applauded the residents for defying the IPOB order.

”I am glad to say that the good people of Enugu State came out in their usual large numbers to conduct their daily businesses,” he said after going round the state to assess the security situation.

He added: “I have gone round everywhere, even to Isiuzo Local Government Council Area, and the report from my Area Commanders in Nsukka, Oji River is that normal human and vehicular activities were ongoing.

“We are not leaving anything to chance, and we will ensure that no Nigerian is intimidated or molested by faceless hoodlums,’’ he said.

Thousands of youths in Imo State chose to hold a solidarity rally on the day for President Muhammadu Buhari and the immediate past Chief of Staff to the Imo state Governor, Ugwumba Uche Nwosu.

Nwosu is seeking the governorship ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC)

The youths adorning customised T-shirts embossed with President Buhari and Nwosu’s pictures marched through major streets in the state capital, chanting pro-Buhari slogans.

    Sit-at-home flops in Awka

The sit-at-home order was a non-event in Awka, as residents defied the directive.

However, all banks, markets and schools were closed down in the state for fear of being attacked by IPOB members, especially in Nnewi and Onitsha.

Security operatives including the Army, Police, Navy, Department of State Service (DSS), went round the major cities in the state to check any untoward occurrence.

Some traders at the popular Eke Awka market did not operate while the main markets in Onitsha and Nnewi were all shut.

Civil servants were at work at the state secretariat.

Some commercial drivers went about their businesses, while some others kept their vehicles off the roads in Awka, Onitsha, Nnewi, Ekwulobia, Ihiala among other towns in the state.

A parent who gave his name as Emmanuel said he took his kids to school as early as 7.16 am only to be turned back by the few teachers who said they were only there to register their presence.

“I was very disappointed when I was turned back, because if they had informed us that there won’t be school today, I wouldn’t have wasted my time coming here,” he said.

A student of Saint John of God Secondary School, Awka, Emelia, said she did not go to school because they were told to stay at home.

Banks, markets defy sit-at-home order in Umuahia

Commercial banks, markets and business outlets in Umuahia, the Abia State capital also opened for business yesterday, defying the sit-at-home order by IPOB.

News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) said the city was initially enveloped by an air of uncertainty in the early hours of the day as residents and commuters kept off the streets.

Business, however, began to pick up at about 7.30 a.m. when commercial vehicle operators, banks, markets and business premises began to open for the day’s activities.

Government offices, public institutions and Automated Teller Machines as well as private outfits were open while kiosks and roadside businesses went on unhindered.

Mr Johnson Onyekwere, a dealer in kitchen utensils, said that although he had sympathy for IPOB, he came to market because he could not afford to idle away his time at home.

“I opened my shop but I did not display all the goods as usual. I don’t like to stay at home. Nobody has come to harass us since we opened this morning,” he said.

Also, Mr Onyekachi Nwankwo, a textile dealer, said he had no reason to stay at home.

According to Nwankwo, only die-hard supporters of Biafra will observe the order.

“I came to the market as early as 7.30 a.m. and as you can see, I am displaying my goods.

“Will those who asked me to sit at home put food on my table?” Nwankwo asked.

    Aba residents shun business

It was a different situation in the commercial cities of Aba, Abia State and Onitsha, Anambra State with many traders staying away from their shops apparently for fear that hoodlums might target their wares.

Although the gates of major markets in Aba, including Ariaria International market, Cemetery, Shopping Plaza, Ahia Ohuru, Bakassi among others were opened, traders stayed away from their shops.

Some commercial banks ran skeletal services early in the day because, as the workers said, there was no directive from their headquarters asking them not to open for the day. Police personnel were spotted in many parts of the city.

The roads of Onitsha and the main markets were also largely deserted.

Vehicular traffic at both ends of the Niger Bridge which links Asaba, the Delta State capital, and Onitsha was also unusually light in the early hours of yesterday.

  • IPOB: Sit-at-home fails in Enugu

The sit at home order by the Indigenous People of Biafra ( IPOB ) was a total failure in Enugu.

Business and social activities were in top gear. All offices and banks were open for business.

Contingent of the Nigeria Police were seen stationed at various strategic points ready for any ugly incident that might crop up.

IPOB had ordered for the sit at home to mark the one year anniversary of the “invasion” of its leader’s home at Afar Umuahia, Abia state.

A generator repairer at the New Layout, Enugu who simply gave his name as Okwudili ‎said why “I will not obey the order is that I have my children to feed and IPOB will not place any food on my table. ”

IPOB’s sister organisation, the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), Ralph Uwazuruike’s faction had earlier dissociated itself from the sit at home order and called on the people of South East and South South not to comply with the order.

Chief Benjamin Ekwenugo, a member of the MASSOB-BIM elder council, spoke on behalf of Uwazurike during the commemoration of the 19th anniversary of the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra, MASSOB, by the Enugu West Zone of the group.

‎The MASSOB-BIM said such sit-at-home call was misplaced and not what Biafrans needed at the moment.

“IPOB is on their own; what will they achieve with all these their sit-at-home order? We are coming out tomorrow; it is only today we have an activity in commemoration of Biafra struggle; there is nothing like people not coming out tomorrow.

“I call on Ndigbo to ignore them and go about their businesses, unless someone that has nothing to do.

“All these sit-at-home and the rest of them are of no use. Today, we are rejoicing because we are already have success in our Biafra struggle; we are only waiting for the official announcement.

“We are today marking a journey of 19 years; it is not 19 days; already we are enjoying Biafra; I recall that when we started, it was almost criminal to mention the name Biafra, but it is no more like that. I was the Director for welfare, so, I know what I passed through then.

“That is why those talking about restructuring are wasting their time. Let Ohanaeze and other proponents restructure themselves not Biafra. They can’t restructure Biafra for us, we are not Nigerians. Even if they do it tomorrow, it is an exercise in futility.”

  • Enugu explains delay in road maintenance

The Enugu State government has said the pavement and surfacing of excavated and stabilised potholes on urban and intercity roads were delayed because of the rains.

A statement by the Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Greg Nnaji, said the persistent rains have made it impossible for the application of “hot rolled asphaltic wearing course for the pavement and surfacing”.

Nnaji, who reassured the people of the government’s commitment to complete the road in time, said “we will take advantage of any available dry weather window to complete the maintenance work at the respective locations/clusters”.

“Consequently, pavement and surfacing are ongoing at Ogui and Otigba junctions, down to Bissalla Road because of the favourable weather in Enugu city at the moment,” he added.

  • 2019: Enugu market women endorse Ugwuanyi for second term

Jubilant market women in Enugu State on Friday, converged on the Government House, Enugu to express their firm support for the re-election of Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi in 2019 for entrenching peace and good governance in the state, and assisting traders in the state grow their businesses.

The traders, who described Ugwuanyi as “the most trader-friendly governor”, disclosed that “we have never had it so good like this since the inception of civilian regime in 1999.”

The women added that Ugwuayin is the only governor of the state, who came on board and remembered the welfare of the traders, stressing that they are supporting his re-election because he cares for them and the masses.

Presenting their stance, the state’s Market Woman Leader, Hon. Esther Edeh, appreciated the governor for the Enugu State Traders Empowerment Scheme his administration launched in 2017 to assist genuine traders who win the monthly open raffle draw of N50,000 each to grow their various businesses, irrespective of state of origin, religion or ethnicity.

She noted the women have benefited immensely from the empowerment programme, expressing delight with the governor’s passion for the wellbeing of the traders, saying: “Every day, what he is thinking is what he can do for market traders in Enugu State.”

Hon. Edeh maintained that the market women in Enugu State have resolved to work for Ugwuanyi’s re-election. Her words: “Daddy, the reason why we are here is to thank you and also tell you that whatever you want in Enugu State as it concerns traders, we will give it to you double. We have come to say to you that in this Lion Building, there is no vacancy, come 2019.”

Responding, Ugwuanyi thanked the women for their support, solidarity and prayers, assuring them of his resolve to continue to serve the people of the state with the fear of God and to improve their living standard.

  • Enugu: PDP still in firm control

THE count down to 2019 General Elections in Enugu State is heating up with the battle line drawn between the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC). For now, the PDP, which is in power in the state, has huge advantage over the APC.

This is despite the fact that many political godfathers in the state, who were hitherto in PDP, have defected to the APC. These include the former governor of old Anambra State, Senator Jim Nwobodo, the former Senate President, Senator Ken Nnamani, the immediate past governor of Enugu state, Sullivan Chime and recently a former gubernatorial aspirant, Senator Ayogu Eze.

But Enugu State electorates are not impressed with the defections of these big men to the ruling APC. Nothing has changed in the voting pattern of the people who since 1999 have become used to PDP. They see these godfathers as saboteurs who have lost their relevance politically.

Moreso, the popularity of the incumbent governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, is so intoxicating among the people that it will be an uphill task for any candidate of another party to upstage him. Ugwuanyi is acceptable not only to the common man on the street but he is as well in the good books of the bigwigs who have defected to the APC. It has been observed that the governor is always in constant and cordial contact with them. And all have endorsed him for second term in office. If anything is the contrary, it will mean Ugwuanyi defecting to the APC himself.

Because of the cordial relationship existing between the governor and the defectors, a political analyst in the state described the bigwig defectors as “APC in the day and PDP in the night”. That the godfathers’ defection to APC did not add any value to the party was made clear during the last November Local Government Election in the state in which they were roundly defeated in their immediate wards.

That can be attributed to their reluctance to come out and campaign openly for the APC. The campaign was left for the Ben Nwoye-led executive to execute. With personalities like the Director-General of Voice of Nigeria (VON), Osita Okechukwu, and the biggest financier of the party in the state, Onyemuche Nnamani, Nwoye strode the nook and crannies of the state campaigning for votes. But their effort could not make much impact because of the reluctance of the godfathers to join the campaign train.

As it is now, with the firm grip of Governor Ugwuanyi on the people, it seems not possible for any other party to penetrate Enugu State. And for the APC to make inroad in the state and win National Assembly seats, the godfathers must show interest and be active in the affairs of the party. The Ben Nwoye group or any other group of the party in the state must receive the active participation of the godfathers to succeed.

  • Police nab three over rail tracks vandalism in Enugu

The Enugu State Police Command has arrested three suspects believed to be behind the rail tracks vandalism and the sale of the components to their accomplices.

The command’s spokesman, SP Ebere Amaraizu, said on Friday in Enugu that the notorious suspected vandals were arrested on Aug. 21 in Emene at the outskirts of Enugu metropolis.

Amaraizu said that items recovered from them included machetes, saws, cutter, digger, iron rods, one big spanner and long pincers as well as the vandalised items and a vehicle used in conveying the items.

He said that the suspects were arrested by police operatives of Emene Division who acted on a tip off that some suspected hoodlums were vandalising a rail track at Emene bush.

“It was gathered that following the information, police operatives got to the scene where one of the suspects, Monday Uche from Ebonyi, was promptly nabbed after being overpowered.

“His arrest and revelation led to the arrest of Henry Uche of Amauda Ohaukwu Local Government Area of Ebonyi, a bus driver, whose bus with registration number XT 102 GGE was allegedly used in conveying the stolen items.

“Also arrested in connection with the incident is one Ofor of number 47 Okorocha Lane, Ukwuoji within Emene,’’ Amaraizu said in a statement.

The police spokesman said that a manhunt for other fleeing members of the gang had been intensified.

“The suspects are currently helping the police operatives in their investigations which has commenced,’’ he said.

  • 263 drivers undergo eye test in Enugu

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Enugu State has conducted a free eye test for 263 commercial drivers.

The drivers were also lectured on eye care and the need to avoid stimulants that blur the vision.

Sector Commander Imoh Etuk said the initiative was in line with the directive from the corps’ headquarters to ensure an accident-free Eid-el-Kabir.

He said: “We are conducting eye test for drivers because it has come to our knowledge that bad eye sight contributes to most road crashes. Some drive under the illusion of having good sight but the result of this eye test has proved us right that most drivers are suffering from one eye defect or the other.

“We have noted those with eye defects and as part of our mandate, we will ensure they do not drive until they undergo the necessary treatment. Glasses and further treatments recommended by the optometrists will be given to the drivers with eye defects.”

Etuk thanked the Nigeria Optometric Association (NOAESC), Enugu State chapter, for buying into FRSC’s vision of zero tolerance for accidents.

“The exercise is a continuous one that will take place from time to time,” he added.

He advised drivers to undergo eye tests regularly, avoid alcohol before and while driving, and buying fairly used tyres for their vehicles.

Chairman of NOAESC Dr Emmanuel Asogwa said the screening was aimed at determining the visual acuity, coverage level and the colour perception of drivers to reduce accidents.

He said: “Greater numbers of the drivers had colour blindness, short sight, cataract and some only see well with one eye. Having detected these defects, we will make recommendations and direct affected drivers to a specialised clinic for further treatment.

“If these defects are not detected and treated early enough, it will result into more serious eye problems and most importantly, accidents.”

A beneficiary, Paul Okechukwu, said he stopped driving for three months because his sight had deteriorated so badly and he had no money to go for check-up and treatment.

Okechukwu said the outreach will afford him the opportunity to correct his bad vision, return to work and fend for his family.

  • Pro-Biafra agitators arrested in Enugu

Leader of the Biafra Zionists Federation (BZF) Benjamin Onwuka, and many others were yesterday arrested in Enugu State for attempting to take over the Government House in Enugu.

It was the group’s third attempt to invade the Government House, with the intention of declaring the Republic of Biafra.

A combined team of security operatives, comprising Department of State Services (DSS) and police were said to have been involved in the operation.

The Biafra agitators marched from the Presidential Road, through Rangers Avenue, but were stopped at the Bissala Road entry to the Government House by security operatives.

The group’s Deputy Leader, Ambrose Ugwu, who confirmed the arrest, said the whereabouts of their members was unknown.

He said: “Our people left this morning (yesterday) for the Enugu Government House to foist the Biafra flag, but they were stopped on getting close to the road leading to the place.

“DSS operatives stopped them from entering the Government House. They told them to stay within the Bissala Road axis and do whatever they wanted to do.

“However, our leader refused, insisting that he must be allowed to enter the Government House. After a while, they brought vehicles and told them to enter, claiming that they were taking them to a place for dialogue.

“As we speak, we have not heard from them. As far as we are concerned, this is abduction, because they were taken to an unknown place. We have gone to the State CID but they are not there.

“We, therefore, call on the international community to intervene for their immediate release. From the information I have, over 50 of them were arrested though they were not armed; they are just freedom fighters. Should anything happen to them, we will hold the Southeast governors responsible.”

Both the police and the DSS were yet to make official statements on the reported arrest.
