  • TCN says efforts on to repair Awka transmission station

TCN says efforts on to repair Awka transmission station

The Transmission Company of Nigeria ( TCN ) says the transmission station in Agu-Awka, Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra is being repaired to restore power supply to the state capital.

The fault has thrown the state capital and its environs into darkness for over one month.

Mr Abdulkareem Labaran, the Assistant General Manager (Operations) in Enugu office of TCN said on Tuesday in Awka that repairs were already on in the transmission station.

Labaran appealed to electricity consumers in the areas affected by the blackout for more time and gave an assurance that engineers were working round the clock to restore the station to normalcy.

He said the problem was not vandalism-related but normal technical issue.

Labaran, however, did not give a specific time within which the repairs work would be concluded.

“Work is going on and we are monitoring the development. I am sure in the shortest time the whole thing will be over.

“I cannot give you a definite time because it is a technical issue. In fact, we ought to have completed it last week but as we were about finishing, another problem developed.

“We are appealing that they give us more time. Our men are there working round the clock and throughout the week.

“It is a peculiar case because the transformer is a mobile one and what they are working on is inbuilt unlike the other normal ones.

“Where the spare parts are not available, our men apply ingenuity by fabricating,’’ he said.

The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company ( EEDC ), however, exonerated itself from being responsible for the outage in the area.

Mr Chukwuemeka Ezeh, the Head of EEDC Communication Department told NAN that the power outage experienced in Awka was as a result of a breaker fault at the TCN Station, Awka.

“This affected supply to our Agu Awka Injection Substation, which feeds Awka and other neighbouring towns.

“It is important to stress that this is not EEDC’s fault but that of TCN,’’ he said.

Reports say that a team of engineers were seen working on the faulty transmission station when visited on Tuesday.

Enugu State Government has approved Consolidated Health Workers Salary Scale as demanded by members of Allied Union of Health Workers in the state, a yearning by the workers that has subsisted in the past years without success.

This gesture entails an increase in the take-home for various health workers in the state other than medical doctors who have had their own special salary scale approved earlier than  is  said to be practical step by Enugu state government to encourage the workers and create desirable industrial harmony in the health sector in the state.

Details of this development came in a briefing after  the state Executive Council Meeting presided over by Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi. Commissioner for Health, Dr. Fintan Echochin,  said the welfare package for health workers of the state is another giant stride by the state government to boost the workers morale for efficient service delivery.

Also during the briefing, state commissioner for information, Mr. Ogbuagu Anikwe, informed that the governor has also approved release of N19.2 m as relief to widows of 19 soldiers of the 82 Division of the Nigerian, Enugu, who have been stranded since their husbands fell on the line duty.

On the health workers’ welfare, Dr. Ekochin explained that “This salary scale is what health workers have been agitating for in the state. Some state governments have already put their health workers on this salary scale, but the challenge there is that they were not able to be consistent in payment of salaries on it, but Enugu State has been consistent with payment of salaries, so bearing that in mind, the state government is now approving the payment plan.

“It is good news for the state and the health workers. It will surely pacify their desires and we hope it would translate to more enthusiasm and productivity in their work places” he explained.

When asked what the state is doing to curtail the outbreak of lassa fever, he explained that proactive measures of his ministry has helped the state to remain disease-free, adding that the Ministry has positioned itself appropriately following the guidelines of Nigerian Centre for Disease Control.

“We have Rapid Response Team reaching out to disease notification officers in the 17 local government areas of the state. Once there is suspicion of any case, there is an alert pathway and the patient gets isolated. We run tests following protocols, once there is a confirmed case, the public will be notified.

“In the meantime, Nigeria Medical Association has also gone out to make awareness with respect to basic infection, prevention and control at the lay man’s level. Information about hand-washing, rodent-free environment, rodent-free food storage and then bringing to hospital people that are suspicious are at the public domain now. We are giving out protective equipment in the form of gowns, gloves, sanitizers in all the state’s facilities and even up to the federal facilities (UNTH, Enugu), even to some faith-based organizations.

“We are doing this to protect doctors and nurses who from experiences are the ones who take the bad effects of the outbreak of these infectious diseases” he informed.

Also Governor Ugwuanyi’s milk of kindness touched 96 widows of the fallen soldiers who took their plea to  him during the Armed Forces Remembrance Day celebration, informing the governor that they were still in the barracks owing to nonpayment of the late husbands’ entitlements by the authorities of the Nigerian Army.

  • Enugu meter testing station to cost N223m

The Federal Government, through the Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency (NEMSA), has officially laid the foundation of a National Meter Test Station in Enugu State.

The establishment of the station is part of government’s efforts to prevent substandard electricity meters, metering equipment and instruments.

The first phase of the project would gulp N223 million and would be ready in 18 months. On completion, the Enugu station will become the fourth after Lagos, Port-Harcourt and Kaduna.

At the foundation laying ceremony, Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer and the Chief Electrical Inspector of the Federation, Peter Ewesor, said the establishment of the National Test Station was a necessity to bring NEMSA’s services closer to the people in the Southeast.

According to him, it cannot be over-emphasised that inspection, testing and calibration and certification of Electricity Energy Meters and electrical installations and power systems play a very critical role in the interface between investors, utility companies and consumers.

He explained that the epoch-making event was significant, and represented a milestone in the realisation of President Muhammadu Buhari’s change agenda and infrastructural development aimed at providing safe, reliable and sustainable electricity to the citizens.

Ewesor noted that the foundation laying ceremony was not only timely, but also worthwhile “if we must reinforce investor’s, utility companies and customers’ confidence in the power sector”.

“Therefore, we cannot at this time of our economy allow the wastage of our scarce resources and lose precious life and property. The task of safety in the electricity industry is for all of us, and we must adhere to standards and regulations in everything that has to do with electricity, which is known to be a good servant but a bad master,” Ewesor said.
