    Vehicle assembly opens in Enugu

A new vehicle assembly plant set up by Peace Mass Transit (PMT) Ltd, has gone into operation. This is the first of such plants by a transport company in Nigeria. The plant, located in the Emene Industrial Layout headquarters of the company, has rolled out about 100 units of the improved version of the Peace Hiace brand of commuter buses in its first production. The transport company, which last month celebrated its 20 years of existence, injects a minimum of 600 buses into its fleet every year.

The new assembly plant is expected to augment the supply needs of the company, for a start.

Toyota Hummer buses, Ugama Hiace, and the resilient Peace Hiace are some of the popular brands in the PMT fleet and are being assembled at the plant.

The locally assembled Peace Hiace buses have been fitted with improved features for optimum performance, safety and comfort of passengers, including rear Air Conditioner, speed limiter device, T.V, Electronic Brake Device (EBD), and Automatic Brake System (ABS).

PMT Director of Operations, Chidubem Ugwu who took reporters round the plant explained that, for now the transport company would buy up the entire units assembled in its local assembly plant and that the internal (PMT) demand would still outstrip the supply.

According to him: “PMT injects at least 600 vehicles into its fleet every year, in a robust, unique fleet renewal programme which has seen it grow into the biggest shuttle bus company in Nigeria in the 20 years of its existence.

“There are at least 2,000 PMT mini buses on Nigeria roads daily, from an active fleet of at least 4,000 buses.”

NYCN hails Ugwuanyi for appointing youths into cabinet

The National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) has commended Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State for appointing largely young people into the State Executive Council.

The state Chairman of the council, Mr. Henry Atigwe, revealed this while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Enugu.

According to Atigwe, young people have never had it so good in the history of governance in Enugu State, with about 90 per cent of youths in the State Executive Council.

He further applauded Ugwuanyi for his youth-friendly policies and programmes as well as youth inclusion in various decision making bodies in the state.

“Gov Ugwuanyi has given us a sense of inclusion in governance.

“The governor’s disposition to issues that affect young people in the state has given us a sense of belonging and confidence in his administration.”

He gave an assurance that the youth body would continue to liaise with the government and relevant agencies in the campaign against drug abuse and illicit trafficking.

Cleric urges youths to shun materialism in marriage

A clergyman, Rev. Maxwell Onyia, has urged youths to shun materialism in marriage.

Onyia gave this advice in a homily he delivered on Sunday at the Anglican Church of Ascension, Enugu.

He noted that material wealth should never be the basis of marriage but understanding and love as well as the fear of God.

“Youths should be directed by prayers, holy spirit as well as the compatibility of individuals involved in the marriage.

“Do not reject a person just because people say that his people are noted for a kind of bias or trbal stigma.

“The person you are dealing with might not have anything to do or be connected with the negative impression being peddled against his or her people or tribe.

“Everybody should be assessed and judged according to his or her character and actions for one to be truly directed by prayers and the holy ghost,’’ he said.

Onyia, however, advised prospective couples and the newly married to seek advice from progressive and focused elderly couples.

“You must not wait to learn from your own costly mistakes but from elderly spouses, who have vast experiences and could give proper advice to pave the way for a blissful family life,’’ he said.

  • Alleged killer of Enugu deputy gov’s orderly arrested in Lagos

The police in Enugu State say they have arrested a fleeing member of an armed group that allegedly killed the Enugu Deputy Governor’s Orderly, Sgt. Helen Sunday. This was contained in a statement issued by the command’s spokesman, SP Ebere Amaraizu on Friday in Enugu. Amaraizu said the fleeing member of the group was arrested on May 27 in Lagos State.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the orderly was killed in Enugu on May 9 by a group of armed men while returning home from work. The police had on May 10 stormed the group’s hideout and engaged the suspects in a gun duel. Two people suspected to be members of the group were arrested while others escaped. The police said the deceased’s Infinix smart phone, and other items, were recovered from the hideout after the shootout.

Amaraizu said the anti-kidnapping unit of the command arrested the suspect via a well-coordinated operation. He said police operatives trailed the suspect to a hideout at Apapa in Lagos State, where he was allegedly receiving treatment. “It is believed that the treatment was for bullet wounds sustained on May 10 when a shoot-out ensued between members of the armed group and police at Lomalinda and Amorji Nike areas of Enugu. “On that day, two of the gang members were fatally injured and apprehended while others believed to have been hit by bullets escaped,’’ he said.

  • 3000 ghost workers discovered in Enugu

Enugu State Governor Ifeanyi,Ugwuanyi has said no fewer than 3000 ghost workers have been uncovered in the state’s local government. The governor, who disclosed this in his Democracy Day speech, said the discovery was made following the setting up of Local Government Audit and other Reforms Committee.

He said, “To make the Local Government System more effective, we set up the Local Government Audit and other Reforms Committee following the meeting of Enugu State Stakeholders held on November 28, 2015 to look into the problems of local government administration and management in Enugu State, including issues of outstanding salaries. This effort to reposition the Local Government System accounted for the delay in conducting Council elections. The Committee headed by the Speaker of the Enugu State House of Assembly has since submitted its report with useful findings and recommendations. For instance, the panel uncovered the existence of over 3,000 ghost workers across the 17 Local Government Areas. This was a major drain to the resources of local councils in the State.”

The governor promised to continue with his vision to provide good governance and other basic needs of the people of the state in order to “build the Enugu State of our dreams”, notwithstanding the economic difficulties in the country.

Ugwuanyi while thanking the people of Enugu State for their unparalleled support, solidarity and prayers also promised that his administration will continue to run an open and accountable government and work assiduously towards the realization of the dreams of the state’s founding fathers.

Past and present leaders of the state such as the  Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ike Ekweremadu and other members of the National Assembly; the Governor’s wife, Mrs. Monica Ugwuanyi; state’s Deputy Governor, Mrs. Cecilia Ezeilo;, the Speaker of Enugu State House of Assembly, Hon. Edward Ubosi and other members of the House; former Governor of the State, Dr. Okwesilieze Nwodo, Service Chiefs, and former Deputy Governors of the state were present at the occasion.

Others include: the Catholic Bishop of Enugu Diocese, Most Rev Callistus Onaga; the Archbishop of Enugu Province (Anglican Communion), Most Rev. Dr. Emmanuel Chukwuma; the Archbishop of Enugu Methodist Church of Nigeria, Most Rev. Barr. C.N Ede; other clerics; the organized Labour; revered Traditional Rulers, etc.

Highlighting his achievements in office, Ugwuanyi who noted that the primary responsibility of government is the welfare of the people and the security of lives and property, said that his administration will continue to pay workers’ salaries and pensions on the 25th of every month in recognition of the fact that the civil service is the fulcrum and engine room of governance.

The governor reiterated his administration’s commitment to peace and security of the state to maintain the state’s status as one of the safest in the country, adding that the government has revitalized the Neighbourhood Association and recently launched the Enugu State Security Trust Fund to galvanize resources and provide the enablers that will ensure the effective equipping of the Neighbourhood Watch to complement the efforts of the Nigerian security agencies.

Ugwuanyi added that his administration has recorded tremendous feats in infrastructural development as a major goal to enhance the wellbeing of the people of the state as well as initiating innovative programmes aimed at economic stimulation and diversification.

He mentioned that the government a few days ago simultaneously commissioned 26 development projects it executed across the 17 local government areas, which were among the 35 grassroots projects flagged off in October 2016 to open up the rural areas and catalyze socio-economic growth.

The governor further stated that his administration also carried out major construction projects as well as intervened in the rehabilitation of failed sections of some federal roads in the state, which hitherto caused untold hardships to the people, slowed economic activities and in many instances, led to the loss of lives.

He said that the government had initiated a N10 million per community based programme tagged “one autonomous community one project” to further take development to the rural areas, promising that the forthcoming Local Government council elections in the state will be the most transparent in recent history.

“I am here today to reaffirm my promises to you and reassure you that this administration will continue to work for the common good of our people. Recall that on this day in 2015, I sincerely acknowledged the fast depleting revenue profile of the State owing to the slump in oil price and low internally generated revenue. Back then, I had assured you that I believed in the miracle of five loaves and two fish; and that I and my team would harness and apply every available resource with utmost transparency, honesty, prudence, and equity to the benefit of the ordinary man.

“Our empowerment programmes designed to alleviate poverty and other socio-economic challenges among our people, have been successful. These include the facilitation of 100 units of one bedroom flats for civil servants of Grade Levels 1-10 at Elim Estate and the Enugu State Traders Empowerment Programme, which was specifically designed to empower market traders in the State through a monthly open lottery where 100 lucky winners receive the sums of N50,000 each. This is in addition to other schemes targeted at youth development,” Governor Ugwunayi highlighted.

Rangers Int’l FC says goalkeeping worries over

Rangers Int’l FC of Enugu Goalkeeper trainer, Suleiman Shuibu, says the club has overcome its goalkeeping injury crisis that affected it in the first stanza of the league.

Speaking to News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Enugu on Wednesday, Shuibu said that goalkeeping injury crisis of the club was over.

According to him, at the moment the club need not worry because a new goalkeeper, Saidu Matawakilu, is doing well.

“At the moment we have a goalkeeper, Saidu Matawakilu, who is at the leadership of the goalkeeping for now.

“So you do not need to change a winning team overnight.
“We know that Nana Bonsu is the first choice goalkeeper no doubt, but Matawakilu is doing well at the moment.
“Mutawakilu can be changed along the line when the need arise but for now, we cannot touch that area because it is a sensitive area in football,” he said.
NAN reports that the club first choice goalkeeper, Nana Bonsu was injured in their match with Lobi Stars at the beginning of the season and was replaced by Itodo Akor, who was also injured before their exit from CAF competition.

Rangers suffered injury in their goalkeeping department to an extent that Nana Bonsu had to be rushed back unfit against Zesco United FC of Zambia in their confederation second leg match in Zambia.

“At the early stage of the season, it was unfortunate that we could not clear all the goalkeepers in our rank.
“We only succeeded in registering three goalkeepers and out of the three, Emmanuel Daniel left to South Africa and we were left with two.
“Along the line, the two keepers were injured but we have to manage what we have but all that is over now,’’ he said.

He said that the other goalkeepers were cleared in the mid-season transfer window and that the club was happy that the injured ones were back to fitness.

Workers of National Orthopaedic hospital, Enugu, on Monday, called off their one month old strike.

The Chairman of the Joint Action Committee of Trade Unions (JACTU) of the hospital, Mr Cyprian Orjinta, announced the suspension of the strike in a statement made available to NAN in Enugu.

“Following a successful meeting between the management of National Orthopaedic Hospital, Enugu and  JACTU held on Thursday, May 25, which was followed by the Congress of the Union on May 27, the Union hereby suspends the current strike with effect from Tuesday, May 30.

“Accordingly, workers have been directed to resume work from 8 a.m. Tuesday, May 30.

“We thank all well-meaning Nigerians whose interventions contributed in the resolution of this crisis,’’ Orjinta said.

NAN recalls that the JACTU embarked on the strike to protest payment of half salaries to its members since the beginning of 2017.

The union also alleged that the entire staff of the hospital did not receive salaries for the month of October, 2016.

The workers claimed that their colleagues in the National Orthopaedic hospitals in Lagos and Kano had no salary payment challenge.

In addition, the union said that the monetary increment based on CONHESS placement and promotion given and due to their members were yet to be paid or implemented after many years.

  • Enugu Disco and Aba electricity consumers

SIR: One of the essences of public corporation is to provide essential services to the public at a subsidized rate. However, if the underlying motive of privatizing the Power Holdings Company of Nigeria (PHCN), was to break monopoly, that motive is good as useless. For example, in Aba where the multi-billion Geometric Power Project could have provided a better and strong alternative, the project was highly sabotaged in a manner which strongly is not devoid of politics. Were Geometric allowed to come on stream, residents of Aba, the Small and Medium Enterprises-hub would have been rescued from the terrible claws of the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company, EEDC, which holds sway in the South-east.

The activities of EEDC in Aba are both despicable and exploitative. It is highly inimical to commercial and artisanship spirits of the town. The attitude of the field workers of the establishment- who are arguably permanent staff- is irritating. They are impunity epitomized: disconnecting consumers at will even when there are clear evidences of payment of bills; failure to issue disconnection notices; indiscriminate re-connection charges without issuance of receipts as evidence of payment. These field workers are lords unto themselves and you dare not question their authority.

The billing system is nothing to write home about. They implement what is called “estimated or crazing billing system” and the irony is that consumers may go some months without electricity but are duty-bound to pay bills. It is a common knowledge that the payment for products is to derive utility, which is the satisfaction derived from consuming a product. For EEDC, “utility” is a “strange concept”.

The rural communities are not spared in this madness. They are under what is called “the bulk billing system” which runs upwards of N600, 000 .00 per month. More worrisome is the fact that these rural communities are peopled by predominantly peasant farmers whose means of livelihood are inadequate to sustain them. The situation has forced communities and individuals to drag EEDC to court. But this option is as well frustrating because of the delay associated with our judicial system. Some communities that do not consider legal actions as viable options have resorted to self- help by physically manhandling EEDC staff.

EEDC is urged to rejig their activities in Aba as not to constitute a clog in the wheel of progress of the city as an SME hub of the nation.
