Ezea: APC can’t be underrated in Enugu

Okechukwu Ezea, a lawyer, is a governorship aspirant of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Enugu State. He spoke on his ambition with TONY AKOWE, shortly after submitting his nomination form at the APC National Secretariat, Abuja.

Enugu PDP has zoned its governorship ticket to Enugu North where you hail from. Can you beat the PDP candidate, if given the APC ticket?

I am very much prepared for this battle. I have gone through the battle before and I know that the PDP is not as popular as people claim in Enugu State and in Igboland generally. The problem is that they have always excelled on the platform of not credible elections in our state. The PDP banks on rigging and on writing of results and over time, we have known their gimmicks and we are prepared to match them and we are also relying on the promises made by the INEC that this time around, we are going to have Biometric accreditation and that will enhance the credibility of the elections in terms of reaching out to grassroots. Everybody want change in Enugu state. They want a change from non accountability; they want a change corruption, they also want a change from the suffering of the people. All our youths are not employed, our children school under the Mongo trees, our hospital do not exist and somebody say their is government in Enugu state, there is no government in Enugu for a long time.

What are those things that you are bringing on board?

What I am bringing on board is change in every aspect of life. We are introducing free education to the state, we are going to introduce medical care to the aged, children and pregnant women. We are going to bring about policies that will enhance job creation for our young men, because there are many institutions in Enugu state producing thousands of many young men and women who do not get employed, meanwhile PDP government is busy squandering billions of Naira that come to the state. From our last analysis of allocation, Enugu state supposed to have collected about N544 billions in the last eight years and there is nothing to show for it. If you check papers today, they are talking of bad roads in many part of the state.

How do you intend to finance these projects when you come into office?

The tragedy of government in Nigeria is that people just sit down on their chairs and wait for federal allocation to come. Governors and the policy makers should wear their thinking cap and begin to talk of how to generate revenue through investment that is regenerative, not tax the people and making the life more difficult for the people by going to impose tax on somebody riding motorcycle, if somebody has money to buy radio you impose tax on it and so on, instead of you to tackle the leakages in the system, stop buying of vehicles and the property for concubines alone, it would bring down the expenses of government and they will have more money to attend to the needs.

How visible is the APC in Enugu state?

You cannot underrate the APC in Enugu State. I wnat to you that the propaganda from the state governor that there is no opposition party in Enugu is only on the pages of Newspapers. I personally have ran the opposition party in Enugu state in the last eight years, I contested under the Labour Party (LP) in 2007 and defeated Sullivan Chime, and I have continue to maintain our position that we do accept the policies and practices of the PDP in Enugu state, we are all over the place and our structure is on the ground.

  • Community union leader abducted

The President General, Nsukka Town Union, Chief Augustine Alumona has been abducted along Opi-Ugwugo Nike road in Enugu State.

It was gathered that a police officer who was returning from night duty spotted Alumona’s vehicle where it was abandoned and sensing foul play in the way the vehicle was parked, opened it and went through some scattered documents.

The policeman phone the number of one Mr. Moses Ugwu who confirmed that Alumona is his brother from Echara Community in Nsukka local government area.

A medical doctor and the Secretary General Oha Nsukka Assembly, Doctor Ikechukwu Obayi while reacting to the incident said the abduction of Chief Alumona was shocking and unbelievable.

“The wife called me and broke the news of the abduction of her husband along Opi/Ugwuogo Nike road.

“Going by the peaceful nature of Chief Alumona in conducting the affairs of Nsukka Community he should be the least person anyone would think of ambushing or kidnapping.”

Obayi stated that the matter had been reported to Enugu state police command for quick rescue of their community leader.

Contacted for comment, the Area commander Nigeria Police Command Nsukka ACP Musa Haladu confirmed the incident but however said it was within the jurisdiction of Enugu state command, explaining that the police would soon unravel the circumstance surrounding the kidnap of Alumona.

  • Workshop on rural IT Centres in Enugu

A one-day workshop on rural information Technology centres for the Southeast states was held in Enugu with participants from all the five states of the zone endorsing the Rural Information Technology centres (RITC) sensitisation and sustainability training.

The workshop was put together by National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) and Foundation for Public Private Partnerships Nigeria (FPPPN) as a major instrument to drive the IT Centres and achieve the purpose of empowering underserved communities and bridging the digital divide would be realised.

Participants also praised the focus of the papers presented at the workshop which captured the reason behind the RITC project: value addition to Communities; sustaining RITC infrastructure and focus; advocating the use of the PPP option to sustain the RITCs, and how to leverage FPPPN expertise to create partnership for RITC sustainability between NITDA and the private sector.

The presentation of the chairman of the programme, Engr. Wilson Agu who is also a member of the board of NITDA, representing the South-East, added value to the training by expounding on personal testimonials and that of others on the importance of ICT in growing businesses in all sectors of the economy.

Agu encouraged participants to make use of the RITCs situated around them to access benefits derivable from ICT.

That a manpower development programme for efficient functionality, management of the RITCs be put in place as well as development of a business plan  for the financial sustainability of the RITCs.

It was also recommended that a multi-stakeholders partnership be formed for the effective management of RITCs a deliberate courting of decision makers to ensure the needed political backing for government funding and patronage.

Also, demographics that favour youth population should serve as a criteria for selecting locations for siting RITCs and viability assessment and needs assessments should be carried out to determine sustainability of RITC and whether the community of choice understands the need for it.

It was further recommended that a token sum should be imposed on users of RITCs for maintenance purposes and to ensure community people value them, just as libraries, RITCs should issue registration cards for paid membership.

The participants unanimously agreed with the leacture paper that the public-private partnership (PPP) option is the best and most viable option for sustaining and maintaining the functionality and performance of the RITCs. Through the PPP arrangement there will be: an infusion of additional capital into the RITCs; improved customer service orientation as a result of performance-driven management; and significant cost savings in the delivery of RITC and its objectives.

  • Enugu residents embrace alternative medicine

    Enugu residents embrace alternative medicine

No fewer than 100 ailing residents of Enugu were treated by alternative medical practitioners at the Luminar International Centre for Energy Health International. The body specialises in application of alternative medicine and energy health.

The President of the body and a specialist in alternative medicine, Prof. Joseph Okoro Akpa said it was high time the Federal Government and Nigerians embraced alternative medicine and energy health, revealing that the energy drawn from various planets can be used to cure sicknesses as well as prevent them.

Akpa, while presenting what he termed the latest research development in alternative medicine and energy health, disclosed that the method of application involves what he called Homoeopathic Medical practice, Acupuncture Energy Health, Magnet Health, Pyramid Energy, and Medical Astrology, among others.

He disclosed that in Homoeopathic Alternative Medical Science the practitioner uses the cause of aliment to cure the ailment, while Acupuncture which he said originated from China, the practitioner uses golden or silver long needles which he inserts into certain points in the body of the patient to balance energy flow and thereby effecting the healing.

He further said that magnets can also be placed at certain points on the body to cure certain ailments too.

In Healing Touch Energy Health, he said the practitioner draws energy from the planets and channels the energy to the patient while either touching him or not touching him in case of Non-healing touch.

He however posited that this whole process does not in any way connote occultism or mysticism stating that it is nature that reveals this information to humans.

Akpa also said that some people always feel reluctant to accept new innovations for fears that the new information may compete with their professions or even overshadow it. While he urged everybody to open heartedly accept all good innovations, try them and see whether they are real or not and even do further research on them.

During the workshop the taught with demonstrations ways through which some ailments can be easily cured and as people tried them some of them claimed it worked for them.

He demonstrated with examples how a magnet can be used to cure ailments and how a simple massage at certain points in the body can cure ailments like headache, heart pain, diabetes and also how energy is tapped from the planets to heal a person or oneself.

He further urged the government to develop alternative medicine and energy health healing processes so as to compliment the orthodox medical practice.

He said: “Looking at the great importance of this programme, we invited a cross section of our people from the presidency down to the common man on the street. This is one of my callings and I wish to fulfil my mission by sharing this pure knowledge with you, my brothers and sisters, here in Nigeria. I dare say that those present today for this programme are people chosen by God, people who are matured to experience the knowledge.

“As a result, I shall make sure that all of you present here will go from here with some satisfaction and joy and will be glad that you have attended.”

Akpa further said that people are always reluctant to and new truth at times for fears that the new information may complete their professions or may even over shadow what they have been propagating before the emergence of the new one.

“To me, I think it is important for the human beings to open heartedly accept all good things, try and see whether the tidings are real or not, if they are real and truthful, people should follow them. If on the other hand they are false, people should discard them,” Akpa admonished.

  • Why watch Enugu go up in flames?

Why watch Enugu go up in flames?

It is becoming clearer by the day that unless an immediate precaution is taken as the days leading to the primary elections into the various elective seats loom nearer, Enugu is likely to explode into a cataclysm, unprecedented violence, with the victor and vanquished not even finding a hiding place.

That would be a piteous spectacle! A once serene and peaceful state in the last seven years is sliding slowly to anarchy simply to satisfy the whims and caprices, a vaulting ambition of one single man and his woman protégé who recently quit the office of Chief of Staff to run for a senatorial seat of the Enugu East.

The theater of war with the drums assailing palpable quakes have begun sounding several months ago, but surprisingly, the stakeholders of Enugu State, the National Headquarters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and perhaps the Presidency, seemed not to have summoned enough courage to call the governor of the Enugu State, Barrister Sullivan Chime, to order.

A cursory peep into history will suffice:  The state woke up one sunny morning to discover to their chagrin that the governor had left unceremoniously to overseas without as much as being courteous to confide in his then Deputy Governor, Sunday Onyebuchi, or even cause a letter to be transmitted to the Speaker, Eugene Odo, that in his absence, his Number Two man should take over the saddle.

A rudderless ship began, being paddled by the Woman Chief of Staff, and days ran into months, indeed for six months, Enugu State became the butt of ridicule with several calls by its people to be told where their governor had gone to.  The rumour mill went full throttle.  Some alleged he had kicked the bucket in India, Germany and London.  The allegation was that he had died several times.

A concerned group, tired of the rot in the system, called for outright impeachment.  Enugu was becoming another Taraba State.  Then the cheek of it,  an appearance in a Winter pull over of a sickened recuperating governor in London, and eventual return with the most unguarded comment that he had read comments about his long stay and ailment, most times amused, laughing, jeering and perhaps mocking his worried subjects.

Then from the blues, came the curious domestic action against the First Lady of the state.  Nigerians were treated to a sitcom of a bloated Clara, son forcefully taken away from her, locked up in what looked like a dungeon and the only time she gets contact with the public, could be likened to a dog in fetters, the janitor opens the barbed gate, flings in the food for the day or when the medics come around.  It was horrendously bad.  Saved by her friend and a human rights lawyer, who raised alarm, to necessitate her being ferried out of the Government House, it was heartless to treat a human being that way.

In civilized climes, especially America, where this writer lived and studied, Governor Chime would have since been stampeded out of power, forced to resign by Organised Women’s Group, Human Rights Activists and even the Labour in the days of Comrade Adams Oshiomhole.

Before now, he had on several occasions snubbed well planned media awards event in Enugu led by the celebrated columnist, Late Allah Dey, Alhaji Odunewu.  Not for him it is to attend ceremonies both in and out of the state and most times had been absent at federal functions that had even the President presiding.  It will be a litany to run a check list.

The Deputy Governor, Onyebuchi, buffeted on all sides, who posed no threat to him was bulldozed out of office with connivance of members of the House of Assembly, who today will be sulking in regrets.

Perhaps, three last attempts, viz: His plan to stop Deputy Senate President, Dr. Ike Ekweremadu from returning as senator is where he has met his match.  The people of Enugu-West cannot be cajoled.  They identify overwhelmingly with Ekweremadu because of his unprecedented development of the zone.  There were major federal roads that ran from Ishiagu to Akaeze in Ebonyi, Aninri Road, through Awgu to Udi, the hilly difficult terrain of the plains of the Awgu – Achi, Oji River road that hitherto was inaccessible from Awgu, Dr. Ekweremadu influenced the construction of the roads even up to Udi.  So, most gullible people in Udi had thought was the state until recently when the truth hit them, like a thunderbolt.

Small wonder, last week, a mere visit of the Deputy Senate President to Udi, Governor Sullivan’s home country and courtyard, brought the specks out of the Udi homeboy, so to say.

The surging crowd and overt show of unsolicited support and genuine solidarity with key opinion leaders in Udi, urging Ekweremadu to re-run for the senate because of his outstanding performances, which included infrastructure, water supply, electricity, scholarship and empowerment of the people to name but a few, must have rattled Chime to no ends.

The Udi people minced no words.  They wondered why any right thinking person would want to change a winning team, especially as Deputy Senate President is the Chairman of ECOWAS Parliamentary body, and the place of the Ibo man in the rank and file of Nigeria polity holding such exalted position as Deputy Senate President.

It is obvious that if both men should slug it out, at the primaries, Chime would be disgraced by the people of Enugu West Senatorial zone.

Of course, the conflagration waiting to explode is the way and manner he has managed who succeeds him in 2015.  The charged atmosphere, had led to one of the contestants, Senator Anyaogu Eze, saying publicly that the governor had shortchanged and ambushed him and he was still in the race.

Perhaps the most shocking is the dramatis personae of his erstwhile Chief of Staff, who has equally thrown her hat into the ring to displace Senator Gil Nnaji for the ticket of Enugu East Senatorial zone.

The biased and suicidal plunge of the chairmen of local governments from the zone, alleged to be compelled to use scarce local government funds to foot the bills running into millions, indeed opens another front of economic fraud likely to put them in the web of EFCC sooner than later. If the allegations that they have opened the local government tilts and vaults for reckless spending and siphoning of funds to appease the lady with little or no electoral value and experience, then they are doomed.  Have these LG bosses forgotten what happened to Second Republic politicians who transferred and converted government coffers to sponsoring and funding of parties? Have they forgotten that they were thrown into prisons?  There is no gain-saying that local government chairmen would no doubt be a meat and easy prey for EFCC if these allegations are incontrovertibly true.

The Nkanu land where she is married, having come from Udi, have vowed not to allow her to accomplish that tall dream, hence other eligible Nkanu sons – Mr. Frank Nweke Junior, former Information Minister during Obasanjo regime, the ALGON National President, Nwabueze, and even the incumbent Senator Gil Nnaji are all in the race for the Enugu East Senatorial seat.

The state government had flexed muscles suspending and autocratically removing traditional rulers linked to the Deputy Senate President and had in recent past tried to stop a ceremony widely publicized where Ekweremadu and deserving Nigerians were to be given traditional titles but could not stop the ceremony which was held amidst pomp and pageantry.

The latest hullabaloo – the unilateral imposition of Ikeje Asogwa, as the new Chairman of the State Executive of the PDP, following conflicting stories surrounding the health of the erstwhile Chairman, Vita Abah, said to be down with stroke and taking treatment overseas, while in another breadth said to have resigned, has further rocked the boat of this seemingly peaceful party in the state.

The immediate reaction of the Deputy Chairman, Elder David Aja, who was legitimately qualified going by the PDP Constitution as the fit and proper person to act for a while or even call for a meeting of the state Executive Council was sidelined has brought to the fore the impunity of the Chief Executive of the state which had reached a bizarre, bewildering and dizzying height.

Given therefore the charged political situation in the state, it is only germane that the National Headquarters of the PDP, headed by amiable Alhaji Adamu Mu’azu, must step in to check this slide to authoritarianism by dissolving forthwith the state party Executive Council, appointing a Caretaker Committee to oversee the affairs of the Party in Enugu.  The security arms and presidency must act in good time to checkmate this combustion waiting to detonate.

If the governor’s calculation is to frustrate foundation members of the PDP out of the state in the likely scenario of forcing them to take tickets from other parties, he must have miscalculated, a grievous error, because these PDP Trojans won’t shift base, they will slug it out.  So the stakes are very high.

  • Enugu and Ebeano family oligarchs

Last week, this column argued that what is unfolding in the run up  to the 2015 general elections, as Nigeria enjoys her longest civilian rule, is rather a triumph of oligarchy, founded on a culture of ‘settling the godfathers’. This national ethos, across the political parties, has strong followership in Enugu state, which is in the firm grips of the People Democratic Party (PDP). The Enugu state model is patented by a political group, which emerged after the 1999 elections, and goes by the appellation, the Ebeano family, or something not very far from that.

The inventor of the group is the former Governor of the state, and later a Senator representing Enugu East, Dr. Chimaroke Nnamani. Before he became Governor in 1999, Chimaroke was resident in the United States of America, where he practiced medicine. At the sanction of political activities by General Abdusallami Abubukar, after the death of the maximum ruler, General Sani Abacha; Dr. Nnamani returned home to participate in the emerging political process. Having neither political experience nor any form of political network, Dr. Nnamani, relied sorely on his kinsman, Chief Jim Ifeanyichukwu Nwobodo, the former Governor of old Anambra state, from which Enugu state was carved out, to pursue his ambition.

The legend is that Dr. Nnamani was the first to arrive at the Nkanu home of Chief Nwobodo, and the last to leave, everyday of the week, as Chief Nwobodo, the godfather, majestically sat on his throne to share the state political offices, with a few acolytes. Of course, the godfather kept a Senate seat for himself. After successfully delivering his godson, Dr. Chimaroke to the Lion Building, the seat of government of Enugu state; the godfather triumphantly moved over to Abuja as a distinguished Senator, hoping to shout orders to his godson from there, while he contends for national space with others federal officials.

Nobody has publicly owned up to knowing what went wrong, but obviously the godson, posthaste desired to become a godfather. Initially it was said in hush tones, but later it was shouted from the roof top, that the godson, Dr. Nnamani, had become his own godfather, and any obstacle on the way, man and material, were cleared without any modicum of mercy. The deposed godfather got the message and stayed in Abuja. Not long after, he could only visit his constituency, if those he went to contend power with, the Obasanjos and the Abubakars, granted him journey mercy, by providing police security. Of course he had his occasional gyrations and public entertainment during arranged visits, but he knew that power had left him.

Governor Chimaroke Nnamani’s reign began in earnest, and the Ebeano political family was born, in blood and tears. When it was time for the creator and godfather of Ebeano family to move on after serving two terms as Executive Governor of Enugu state, he was determined to avoid the pitfall of his deposed godfather, Chief Nwobodo. He sought for ‘a most pliable, reliable, apolitical and dependable ally’, during his reign, to succeed him as Governor. The lot after a strenuous search fell on the incumbent Governor, Barrister Sullivan Chime, who was conservatively loyal, politically austere, and somewhat a technocrat. He was a perfect godson. An even more perfect godson Sunday Onyebuchi, the impeached deputy governor of Enugu state, was installed as his deputy. The new kingmaker, Governor Chimaroke, assumed the senate seat which he early enough strategically appropriated from the defunct godfather, Chief Nwobodo; and the Ebeano family flourished.

His Excellency, Barrister Sullivan Chime, did not disappoint his political family. On consolidating the reigns of power, he knew that in the tradition of the Ebeano family, the throne of the reigning godfather must be decapitated and the occupant banished. Considering that Dr. Nnamani was not generally loved like his erstwhile godfather, Chief Nwobodo; it did not take much effort to steer the people away from him. The family’s other godsons like the current Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu, Senator Ayogu Eze, Senator Gilbert Nnaji, state party officials, local government administrators, name them; immediately abandoned the deposed godfather. Of course the New Ebeano family made in the image of Governor Sullivan Chime has been flourishing.

With 2015 in sight, the reigning godfather of the Ebeano family, Governor Sullivan Chime, has been discharging his onerous political responsibilities, without any fear. Of course, according to the family tradition, favour is the sole determinant. Considering the past exploits of the reigning Enugu state oligarchs, it is in order to begin to refer to the anointed gubernatorial aspirant, Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi , as the next executive governor of Enugu state. According to the Governor’s media handlers, the selection process was done in the best tradition of democracy. A senior Senator from the same zone as the anointed candidate, and whom I expected to run, Senator Ayogu Eze protested mildly, knowing as he ought to, being an inner-caucus member of the family that reigning godfathers are maximum rulers, and it may be unpleasant to excite them.

I recall an encounter for a lesser office in the state, which event I relayed here some years back. It was at the selection of Barrister Emeka Ozoagu, as the PDP’s chairmanship candidate for Ezeagu local council. During the process, the now forgotten House of Assembly member, Tico, who showed dissent while the godfather presided, was allegedly beaten black and blue at the instance of a top state functionary, now the preferred candidate for the senatorial zone of the two erstwhile godfathers, Enugu East. According to that source, when Representative Ozomgbachi was called upon to contribute; he told His Excellency, the reigning godfather, that he holds the yam and the knife, and it was his prerogative to share according to his will; to which even other contestants fearfully chorused, Amen.

  • Neglected Enugu community appeals to Chime

Umualor community in Isi-Uzo Local Government Area of Enugu State has petitioned Governor Sullivan Chime over what it described as its prolonged neglect. The community wants him to intervene and reverse the situation.

In a statement signed by the coordinator, Umualor United For Change (UUC), Comrade Ogbuzuru Ejike, the community said it suffered a litany of economic and political neglect that arose from age-long non-compliance with the power sharing formula in Isi-Uzo Local Government Area by other communities that make up the local government.

Ejike said even though it was a well-known fact that Umualor remained the oldest town in the local government area, none of its indigenes has been given an opportunity to occupy any elective political position.

The development, he noted, has tended to shut out his people from the vast dividends of democracy and good governance which successive regimes and even the current Chime administration have provided.

“The setbacks of this neglect began with and are further heightened by the fact that out of the eleven political wards allocated to the local government, Umualor barely has one where five communities exist in the local government. Ehamufu has four wards, Ikem has two, Mbu has two and Neke has two as well. The imbalance has existed given the fact that all the other communities at the forefront of political power all these while though it wise that we were merely a hamlet that needed no political attention and thus had no use of the ward during the delineation process.

“It is not pellucid and crystal clear that we have been cheated all these while from the above your excellency, even when all the communities in the local government have agreed and officially accented to a zoning system that would ordinarily make Umualor Development Area the next community to produce a candidate for elective political position?. We want to crave your indulgence and wealth of political wisdom as our great political leader therefore to assist us in securing the ticket for the state house of assembly come 2014 as a way of enhancing our political chance and future in the state.

“Your Excellency, it is unfathomable that where eleven wards exist, a community with just one ward can scarcely produce a political office holder even on the grounds of strict adherence to rotational formula let alone when it has been jettisoned for political advantages.

“Your Excellency, we have reasoned with this ancient Igbo philosophy which asserts that when taken for granted, gold in one’s hand is sometimes considered like cheap copper and have seen that if the current happenings continue, the Umualor community might never test the opportunity of steering the political wheel of the local government nor any other political position deemed rightful for Isi-Uzo Local Government and this we say God forbid,” he stated.

The coordinator of UCC further added that the chronology of events has shown that Umualor has been relegated to the background in spheres of access to political power, adding that as a result, they wished to know if they were mere commodity or a community sharing equal rights with their neighbors.

He expressed dismay that Umualor in this modern age has no passable roads, no access to electricity, no telecommunication network, stating that the community suffers patiently deplorable state of poor medical facilities.

“We know that you have been reputable to have a listening ear to the marginalised. Awgu, Nsukka, Oji River among others would all bear witness to this. We believe that if you delve into this matter as one of your last developmental strides as the governor we would not and never remain the same again, it is well with you sir,” Ejike pleaded.

  • Free maternal/child care in Enugu

    Free maternal/child care in Enugu

Enugu State Governor Sullivan Chime has said he is determined to make the Free Maternal and Child Health (FMCH) programme initiated by his administration the best of its kind in the country.

He spoke while inaugurating 13 vehicles donated by the state government to the Ministry of Health for use in ensuring effective supervision and implementation of the programme in all local government areas.

Represented by his Chief of Staff, Mrs. Ifeoma Nwobodo, Chime revealed that the programme was introduced in 2007 to enable it to achieve the objectives of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in the state.

Chime noted that presentation of eleven Hilux vans and two Toyota buses would complement the recent employment of new personnel for the seven health districts in the state comprising 20 medical doctors, 150 nurses, five pharmacists and five medical laboratory scientists.

Others, he said, included 10 radiographers, five medical record officers, 30 security and clerical officers, 15 drivers and five messengers.

He recalled that approval has recently been given for payment of consolidated salary structures (CONMESS) to medical doctors in the system, adding that the rest would follow soon.

The state’s Commissioner for Health, Dr George Eze praised the vision of the Governor in paying prompt attention to the needs of FMCH, noting that Enugu State was the first to embrace the programme, a feat which has earned the state high ratings as far as health care delivery in the country is concerned.

Dr. Eze further said the vehicles would ensure that services were extended to

people in the rural areas, emphasising that ”no woman would lose her life because of inadequate treatment or attention during child bearing in the health districts of Enugu State.”

He also urged the Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) of the districts to reciprocate the government’s gesture by living up to their responsibilities in their areas.

He commended the Department for International Development (DFID) and other agencies for their supportive roles to the FMCH programmes.

Speaking on behalf of other partnering agencies, a representative of DFID, Prof. Eddy Nwobodo praised Governor Chime for placing high premium on the health sector.

He revealed that the state government has spent the sum of N7 billion on the FMCH programme since its inception. He called for concerted effort to ensure the success of the programme at all levels.

Top government functionaries and politicians, including Chairman of Health Management Board, Dr Arthur Chinedu Idoko and Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health, Dr Moses Otiji, among others.

  • Enugu professionals to Chime: forget the Senate

Enugu professionals to Chime: forget the Senate

Enugu State professionals worldwide have asked Governor Sullivan Chime to forget his senatorial ambition in the interest of the state.

They said his withdrawal from the election will ensure that the comparative advantage Senator Ike Ekweremadu’s continuity in the Senate would bring to the state and the Southeast is not jeopardised.

Their stand was contained in a letter to the governor signed by over 1,000 members across the globe.

The principal signees are Uchenna Nnamani for Enugu East; Desmond Ugwu for Enugu North and Moses Chinegwu for Enugu West.

Writing under the auspices of Enugu Concerned Professionals Worldwide, the professionals asked Chime, in the interest of the state, to “listen to the collective voices of reason and consider the distractions and great loss inherent in your contest for an elective position.”

They listed 10 reasons why the governor should stay away from elective office.

The group said: “As a lawyer, we will not bore you with the constitutional provision of no-term limit for the legislative arm of our presidential system of government.

“The importance of no-term limit must override the need for zoning, which is not constitutional.

“The increase in effectiveness of legislators is due to experience: the more you do something, the better you get at it. Experienced legislators make good laws.

“The Senate and the House of Representatives have incumbency and seniority rules, which favour re-elected and experienced lawmakers. Examples abound worldwide.

“The Enugu West has one Senate position and two House of Representatives positions. The ranking senator is also the Deputy Senate President and the Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament.

“The people of this zone will be short-changed if the incumbent senator is denied the opportunity to be re-elected. Besides the loss of seniority, a change in the Senate wipes away the power and influence of the exalted office, which is fifth in the succession ranking in the country.”

The Enugu professionals insisted that Chime’s presence in the Senate would short-change the state.

They said: “Enugu State houses the capital of Southeast, the home of Ndigbo. The zone has benefited from federal appointments and the projects emanating from the Office of the Deputy Senate President. The loss of the Office of Deputy Senate President and Speaker of ECOWAS Parliament will be a worst disservice to be visited on any people by their leader.
