  • Expectant mother dies in Enugu building collapse

An expectant mother was killed on Sunday night at the Coal Camp area of Enugu when a four-bedroom bungalow collapsed.

    Several others were injured.

It was learnt that the incident occurred at 10pm after the victims had gone to bed.

The bungalow, located at Ologo, New Site of Coal Camp in Enugu North Local Government Area of Enugu State, collapsed when some parts of a surrounding hill fell on top of the house and other buildings.

A resident, who spoke in confidence, said the expectant mother, identified as Mrs Chinasa Chukwuka, was buried inside the house by the collapsed parts of the hill.

The resident said efforts to remove her alive were abortive, adding that her husband, Mr Emeka Chukwuka, became unconscious after sympathisers pulled him out.

The owner of the collapsed building, Mr Joseph Nwoye, from Ebonyi State, said he discussed with Mr Chukwuka before the incident occurred.

He claimed that he told the tenants, including the husband of the late woman, to find another accommodation last week when some stones from the hill destroyed parts of the house after a heavy rain.

The landlord said the late Mrs Chukwuka rejected an alternative accommodation he got for the tenants.

Nwoye, who wept profusely, said the incident occurred a few minutes after he discussed with Mr Chukwuka on the accommodation issue.

He said: “After discussing with the husband of the late woman in the night, I went inside to sleep. Shortly after that, I heard a loud noise. When we came out, we discovered that the house had collapsed. The expectant mother died on the spot. My son fainted after the incident.

“It was raining heavily when it happened. We ran out and pulled out Mr Chukwuka alive.

“I bought the land in 2010. The secondnd tenant, Cyril Jaja, was injured. I had asked them to find another place.”

The remains of the late pregnant woman had been deposited in an undisclosed mortuary.

    Three-storey building collapses in Enugu

A three  storey building with a pent house on Saturday  collapsed in Enugu.
The State government through its commissioners for lands and the  Enugu Capital Development Authority, Dr. Emeka Ujam and Engr. Ikechukwu Ugwuegede  announced the revocation of the land when they visited the site.
The building said to be owned by a Southern African based businessman, caved in at about 6.40 am.
Work on the collapsed building situated at plot 16 Nnobi street, Uwani Enugu was said to have been  stopped since early last year for an undisclosed reason.
As at the time of filing this report, bulldozers from from he Arab Contractors Construction Company and men of the state Fire Service were clearing the debris in search of casualties if any.
The commissioner for Lands, Emeka Ujam told reporters at the site that government was fully aware that the building was not approved and had severally warned the owner and the builders to stop work.
According to the commissioner, the ministry’s field men discovered that the building was defective and the foundation could not carry a 3-storey structure, and henc promptly stopped work on the site.
But the builders, he said, clandestinely continued work and brought it up to the level that led to its collapse.
“This has exonerated us because when we tell them to build according government specifications, they will think we are out to victimize them,” posited Ujam.
Ujam said apart from revoking the land, government would arrest and prosecute all those involved in the continuation of the building by defying  its orders.
The commissioner for Enugu Capital Development Authority, Ikechukwu Ugwuegede also told reporters that the owner and builders did not conform with government specifications, “and now this the result.”
Ugwuegede said they exceeded the height for the foundation and announced that henceforth, the government would tighten up the construction processes of buildings.
While regretting that the collapse was the first to occur in Enugu for a very long time, Ugwuegede stressed that henceforth, buildings with up to two floors would now have construction project sign boards mounted at the site during construction.
“this is to allow the public and the authorities know the designers, engineers, contractors and others involved in the construction and hold them liable immediately in the event of this type of incidence,” Ugwuegede explained.

  • Seven international airlines to fly into Enugu Airport

The Federal Government disclosed yesterday that seven foreign airlines have indicated interest to operate international flights into the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu.

Aviation Minister, Princess Stella Oduah, who made this known at the inaugural flight of Ethiopian Airlines into Enugu Airport, said very soon the prospective airlines will roll out their strategies on how to begin the operations.

Oduah said the Enugu Airport cannot be ignored by any foreign carrier, because of the immense potentials the South East States offers as a trading and business destination.

The minister described the commencement of international flights into the airport as the fulfilment of promise by government to ease the movement of persons and goods into any part of the world.

She also hinted of plans by the Federal Government to develop designated airports into ‘airport city’, among which is Enugu Airport.

Oduah said:” I feel extremely excited over this landmark achievement. This is evidence of the commitment of government to improve aviation in Nigeria, which has been accomplished today. States in the South East that are land locked are no more so, now that the airport is now open, the economy of the states in the region would now experience a leap.”

Also speaking, the Secretary of the Government of the Federation, Anyim Pius Anyim described the flag off of international flights from Enugu Airport as a new vista of socio-economic development for the south eastern states as well as the entire country.

Anyim said government would continue to consolidate on its promise to open up all parts of the country for economic development through air transportation, assuring that other projects expected to put the airport in the global scale would be completed.

There was excitement at the airport as Governors Peter Obi of Anambra State, his Enugu counterpart, Sullivan Chime and Theodore Orji of Abia State were ushered into the Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 737-800 for endorsement, with the governors waving to a cheering crowd.

The Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu also graced the event. Amid tight security the aircraft landed at the extended runway of the Enugu Airport about 12.15 pm to the tumultuous jubilation of hundreds of airport workers, passengers and Enugu residents.

Some passengers on the flight described the service into Enugu Airport as a huge relieve from the harrowing experiences of travelling to either Lagos or Abuja to connect flights overseas.

Also speaking, the Managing Director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria ( FAAN), Mr a George Uriesi, described it as a major feat for the aviation sector , because the commencement on international flight into Enugu would generate more revenue for the authority.

  • Preferred bidder for Enugu Disco may still be considered

THE National Council on Privatisation (NCP) mayreconsider Interstates Electrics for the payment of 75percent balance for Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (Enugu Disco) ahead of the August 21 deadline, it was learnt yesterday.

Special Assistant on Media to the Minister of Power, Kande Daniel, who revealed this to our Abuja correspondent in an exclusive interview yesterday, noted that there is every possibility that the firm will be considered by the council as soon as it is able to fulfill its financial obligations.

According to her, the privatisation process provides way for the possibility of a reserved bidder taking the slot if the preferred bidder fails to meet the conditions.

She added: “The picture is not yet very clear yet since there isn’t an official statement on that yet. But we know that the position of the paper work done earlier provides way for the possibility of a reserved bidder taking the slot of the preferred bidder if they don’t meet up with the conditions.”

“Again, like I said, the full picture is yet to show whether the preferred bidder fulfilled the terms of financial obligations. Did they fail in meeting the obligations or was it a case of procedure, was it the paper work that needed to be done that didn’t finish by deadline? So that needs to be proven. If it is proven that the bidder did not fail to meet their financial obligations, I believe they will still meet their slot.”

  • Enugu goes international

    Enugu goes international

History of great proportions, will be made today (Saturday, 24th August, 2013) in Enugu when the first International passenger flight (courtesy of Ethiopian Airlines), touches down in the newly upgraded and outfitted Akanu Ibiam International Airport.

The event will certainly go down as one of the most significant in the history of the entire south east region since after the civil war. The journey to today’s event has indeed been a long and arduous one. The upgrading of the Enugu Airport to international status had constituted one of the most persistent and strident agitations of south easterners over the past four decades.

Unfortunately, successive federal administrations had paid either deaf ears or lip service to the demand, preferring instead to play politics with and around it despite the glaring fact the airport is generally acknowledged as the fourth busiest airport in Nigeria after Murtala Muhammed Airport, Ikeja, Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport, Abuja and Port Harcourt International Airport.

The fact that the Enugu was the capital of the region which houses the biggest commercial centres in the country such as Onitsha, Aba and Nnewi with businessmen from the area constituting the majority of international travellers annually seemed not to make any difference to the powers that were.

Light however finally appeared at the end of the tunnel when, following a visit by Governor Sullivan Chime of Enugu State and his then brother Governors of the other South East states to canvass the matter along with other need of the region, late President Yar’adua approved the upgrading of the airport to international status and promptly included it in the budget for that year before sending it to the National Assembly for approval.

When President Goodluck Jonathan assumed the office following the death of Yar’adua, the governors again visited him and sought his support for the full implementation of the project. The President not only offered them his firm promise followed up his words with concrete action that soon culminated in his commissioning of a new runway at the airport designed to accommodate bigger aircraft. It was during this ceremony that the President and caused the name of the airport to be changed to Akanu Ibiam International Airport. The development expectedly, earned him effusive praises from south easterners around the world who understood that their situation was about to experience a radically positive change.

The then Minister of Aviation, Mrs Fidelia Njeze, who had brilliantly superintended the early phases of the project, while highlighting the obvious advantages accruable from the new status of the airport correctly observed that a large proportion of businesses in the region were “of international proportions”. She had pointed out and quite rightly, that with the new development, international travellers from Enugu and neighbouring states would no longer have to endure the added cost and hardship of going to Lagos, Port Harcourt and Abuja in order to travel.

Fully aware of the enormous economic and social benefits the completion of the project will bring to the entire region and Enugu in particular, Enugu State governor, Sullivan Chime had quickly moved to mobilize and supply all the support necessary to bring the project to a speedy fruition. The governor instantly rehabilitated both the access and internal roads of the airport thus giving it the required initial facelift

Along with his colleagues in the other governors of the South East states, Chime had also helped to keep up the pressure for the timely completion of the project.

Mention must also be made of the zeal and unbridled energy deployed by the current Minister of Aviation, Princess Stella Odua, in ensuring that the project became a reality.

The activation of the international arm and service of the airport has indeed become another very important step towards the full modernization nay, internationalization of the once sleepy city of Enugu.

Governor Chime had set the stage for this with the unbelievable transformation he had brought to the city and other parts of the state. Apart from creating a safe and secure environment for all residents, the had embarked on a massive infrastructural development of the state resulting in the construction of an impressive network of roads complete with street lights, traffic lights, pedestrian walkways and an effective drainage system. He also created an efficient public transportation and waste disposal system and an effective fire service among many other things etc-all reminiscent of cities in the advanced countries of the world.

Earlier in May this year, President Jonathan answered yet another prayer of the Chime administration when he announced his approval for the establishment of the Enugu Free Trade Zone. The President incidentally, made the announcement during his visit to Enugu to perform the ground breaking ceremony of the international wing of the Akanu Ibiam airport.

All these, coupled with the location of one of the largest shopping malls in the country in the city, the steady influx of foreign investors and the rapid development of a modern hospitality and tourism industry, have in no small way, come to confirm Enugu’s modernity and international appeal.

It is certainly evident that the city has been set on firm and irreversible course to reclaim its previous status as a leader among contemporaries and the people of the state and indeed of the entire South East, could not be more thankful.

  • First international flight lands in Enugu

The Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, yesterday received its first-ever international flight, four days to the official landing of international commercial flights.

Billionaire businessman Arthur Eze flew in from Senegal in a private jet, marked 5MPZE, which landed at 3.20pm.

President Goodluck Jonathan approved the upgrading of the airport two years ago and laid the foundation for the building of the international wing early this year.

Although work is still on at the various sections, the Ministry of Aviation has slated the official landing of commercial international flights into Enugu for Saturday.

Ethiopian Airline is billed to fly in and out of the coal city.

Speaking to reporters after the four-hour flight, amid jubilation by residents, who thronged the airport, Eze praised President Jonathan for keeping his promise.

He said the upgrading of the airport would boost the economy of the Southeast.

“Look at me, I flew from Senegal to Enugu for four hours. I don’t need to go to Lagos or Abuja to catch any international flight again.

“It is a good thing and I thank God for the development. The people of the Southeast will live to enjoy this because it will improve our economy,” the businessman said.

  • Food prices rise in Enugu

Traders and consumers in Enugu are lamenting the hike in the prices of grains, fruits, sugar, vegetables and other food items as the Ramadan enters its sixth day.

A correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), who visited the Enugu Main Market on Monday, reports that prices of fruits, millet, guinea corn, cowpea, beans and sugar have increased.

The prices of vegetable oil and rice, however, remained stable.

A bag of guinea corn, which formerly sold for N8,000, now goes for N10,000.

Mr Nonso Ugwu, a grain seller, told NAN that the prices of groundnuts, cowpea, beans as well as maize have increased.

He said a bag of groundnuts which used to cost N18,000, now sell for N21,000 while beans, formerly N22,000, now cost N23,000.

Ugwu explained that the price of maize had increased from N10,000 to N10,500 while cowpea formerly sold at N20,000 now cost N22,000.

He said some species of beans and cowpeas were brought from Borno and Gombe.

Ugwu said that due to the security challenges in the Northeast, it had been difficult to get enough of the commodities at cheaper rates.

Agu Onwudire, a grain seller, also told NAN that before now, a small bag of millet was sold at N11,000 but it now goes for N13,000.

“The planting season is also partly responsible for the price increase,’’ he said.

Tijjani Yunusa and Mrs Linda Amadi, both tomato sellers, told NAN that tomatoes were seasonal, adding that the commodity was transported from Kano, Zaria, Gboko and Nsukka.

“At the moment, the tomatoes in the market are the ones from Nsukka and Gboko.

“By August, tomatoes from Kano and Zaria will be available while that of Nsukka and Gboko will be out of the market because of the planting season,’’ Amadi said.

Yunusa said a basket of tomatoes formerly selling at N6,000 now sold at N6,500, while the small basket of tomatoes that used to cost N3,000 is being sold at N3,500.

“Muslims are experiencing hike in the prices of grains, mainly guinea corn, millet and sugar because they are among the foods we need for breaking our fast,’’ he said.

Mr Babangida Ahmmadu and Mr Augustine Nwaonu, both onion sellers, told NAN that they were bringing the onions from Sokoto State.

Ahmmadu said that a bag of new onion formerly sold at N13,000 now cost N13,500 while the old onion bag remained stable at N15,000.

Mr Okwudili Okoh, a pepper seller, said there was a decrease in the price of a bag of pepper from N6,500 to N4,000.

Mrs Nkechi Elo, a fruit seller, said the price of water melon had also increased as result of the Ramadan.
