JUST IN: Enyimba FC sacks head coach Yemi Olanrewaju

Enyimba FC, one of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) giants, has announced the dismissal of its head coach, Yemi Olanrewaju.

The club made the announcement on Saturday via a social media post, thanking the 32-year-old coach for his contributions and wishing him success in his future endeavors.

“Enyimba FC can confirm that it has parted ways with head coach Yemi Olanrewaju. The club thanks Coach Olanrewaju for his services and wishes him the best in his future endeavors,” the statement read.

Olanrewaju, who was appointed seven months ago following the departure of Finidi George, leaves amid a difficult period for the club.

Enyimba is currently enduring a nine-match winless streak across all competitions, including six consecutive draws in the league.

Their struggles in the CAF Confederations Cup have left them at the bottom of Group D, with only one point from three matches.

The decision to part ways with Olanrewaju came just 48 hours after a disappointing 1-1 draw against Plateau United in the NPFL.

Enyimba, the league’s most successful club, currently sits 11th on the table with 23 points from 15 matches.

In his time at the helm, Olanrewaju managed 26 matches, securing nine wins and suffering seven losses.

Despite his previous roles as an assistant manager at Magate FC, MFM, and Vandrezzer, his stint at Enyimba failed to produce the desired results for the club.

  • Battle royale in NPFL as Rangers, Enyimba FC tango in Enugu

Battle royale in NPFL as Rangers, Enyimba FC tango in Enugu

Though technically four teams are still in the hunt for the league title but the Oriental derby between the Flying Antelopes and the People’s Elephant and the tie in Lafia between Lobi Stars and Remo Stars will tell a lot where the season’s title race pendulum will swing, writes TUNDE LIADI

The most talked about fixture in the Nigeria Premier Football League Matchday 35 is the Oriental derby between Enugu Rangers and Enyimba while Sunshine Stars versus Akwa United tie in Akure and Bayelsa United versus Sporting Lagos are also other key games this  weekend as we hit the  defining moments of  the season.

Last weekend, Enugu Rangers got a valuable point at Sporting Lagos and till  top the table with 61 points while the Noisy Lagosians’  inability to secure maximum points before their fans saw them slip to the relegation zone in 17th  spot with 42 points.

On the other hand, Sunshine Stars and Akwa United zoomed out of the drop zone following victories over Gombe United away and Heartland FC in Uyo. The defeat also put the Naze Millionaires on the brink of lower league return but is not yet mathematically relegated.

Tomorrow at the Cathedral- The Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium in  Enugu-Rangers will host second placed Enyimba in a game that could define the destination of the league title with third place Remo Stars with 59 points facing Lobi Stars who are fifth with 52 points in Lafia.

Fourth placed Shooting Stars with 56 points,  are visiting Port Harcourt as guests of Rivers United who are ninth on the log with 47 points in another cracker billed for tomorrow.

Matchday 35 fixtures start today with three loaded games with the North Central derby between Plateau United and Kwara United at the New Jos Stadium to be  telecast live by league sponsor, StarTimes on Beta Sports channel 244.

The Peace Boys have gone down the radar  after picking just four points from their previous four games and are without a win in the last three matches. They have slipped to the sixth spot with 51 points and must win to save face in their penultimate home game before the season ends.

Kwara United are unbeaten in their last seven games and have moved to the 11th  spot with 45 points. They famously ended their winless streak against Remo Stars two weeks ago and were within minutes of an away win in Kaduna against Niger Tornadoes before they let in the equaliser in stoppage time last weekend.

The Harmony Boys are still unsafe in the relegation battle as they are just three points away from drop zone. A point will be more than precious for Kabiru Dogo led Kwara United in Jos.

In Katsina also today, Katsina United will hope to get their revenge on Gombe United whom they lost the first leg to 1-0 in the first round. The Changi Boys are eighth with 49 points and will relish a home win that will all but confirm another stint in the topflight next season against already relegated Gombe United.

Another tie billed for today is the encounter billed for the Sani Abacha Stadium, Kano between Kano Pillars and Niger Tornadoes. Tornadoes pinned Pillars 1-0 in the first leg played in Kaduna.

Sai Masu Gida under an interim coach are flying in recent games. They are through to the semi-final of the President Federation Cup having eliminated Sunshine Stars on penalties past midweek.

They are 10th  on the log with 47 points and need a win to stop last minutes calculations.

Tornadoes who are in 12th  position with 44 points are barely two points away from the drop zone. They cannot afford to lose the game in Kano today with Bayelsa United (18th  spot with 42 points), Sunshine Stars (15th  spot with 43 points) and Abia Warriors (13th  spot with 44 points) projected to go above them if they win their home games.

In Umuahia, Abia Warriors will welcome Bendel Insurance tomorrow to the Umuahia Township Stadium in a game the three points are pivotal to their elite division survival.

The Warriors with Bethel Orji at the helms are through to the semi -final of the President Federation Cup for the first time in the club’s history but must grind out at least two more wins from the remaining four league games to remain  in the topflight next season.

Bendel Insurance on the other hand with 49 points in seventh spot can afford to enjoy themselves in the game and care less about its outcome with three points from the remaining three games looking good enough to guarantee their third consecutive season in the topflight.

At the Lafia City Stadium, Lobi Stars with under-fire Eugene Agagbe in charge, will host Remo Stars tomorrow. It is a game the Pride of Benue need to win to halt their five game winless streak.

The Dominic Iorfa-led Lobi Stars started the season impressively and were among the top three throughout the first round but their form has been abysmal in the second round.

Even though they are untroubled by relegation, Lobi Stars fifth with 52 points need to beat Remo Stars to assuage their fans’ restiveness.

With Rangers playing at home, Remo Stars cannot afford to drop any point in Lafia to stay in close touch with the Flying Antelopes. They are third with 59 points but could see Rangers opening up a five point gap if they beat their Oriental brother, Enyimba and the Sky Blue Stars are beaten in Lafia.

  • Mid-week games are killing us- Uwau cries out

Mid-week games are killing us- Uwau cries out

Lobi Stars technical adviser, Godwin Koko Uwua has told SportingLife that the mid-week matches are not good for the Nigeria football.

The former Enyimba FC of Aba manager said the organizers of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) should have considered so many things before fixing mid-week matches.

Uwua complained of fatigue as the players are not finding it easy with frequent travels to play league games within few days on bad roads.

The Makurdi-based outfit suffered a 4-0 defeat to MFM in the match day 3 game in Lagos on Sunday before returning to Makurdi to thrash ABS 3-0 in the match day 4 on Wednesday.

“We thank God that we won our match against ABS. But I must tell you that the long journey is really affecting how we play our games. Mid-week football is not good for us and not everything you see that you copy. You have to understand that our roads are bad. And we have to travel for league game within three days interval, it is not good at all,” the former Niger Tornadoes coach said to SportingLife.

Uwua, who helped a South Africa club, Free State Stars gain promotion to the Premier Soccer League in 2007, said any journey that is more than three hours is usually by air in South Africa.

“In South Africa, any journey that is more than three hours is by air. In England, which they are taking after too travel by air for any match that is more three hours because of jet lag.  We traveled about 12 hours to Ibadan for 3SC game on Sunday and it really affected my team’s performance, and we had to travel to Markurdi the following day to play against Kano Pillars on Wednesday. The following morning, we were on the road for another 13 hours journey to Lagos for MFM game. It is not easy and not good for our football. The distance covered is not favourable. We are doing something we don’t understand. Tomorrow (Friday) we will be on the road again to Port-Harcourt to play against Rivers United on Sunday. For how long are we going to continue with this?,” Uwua lamented.

  • NPFL: Plateau United beats Enyimba 3-1 in Jos

NPFL: Plateau United beats Enyimba 3-1 in Jos

Plateau United have leapt to the top of the NPFL log after they
dismantled Enyimba 3-1 at the Rwang Pam Stadium to maintain their
perfect start to the season with six points from two matches.

Elisha Golbe scored his second goal of the season from two matches in
the 12th minute before Kabiru Umar and Emeka Umeh increased the Jos
side lead in the 67th and 80th minutes.

Enyimba however pulled a goal back through Ikechukwu Ibenegbu in the
82nd minute but it was too little too late as the People’s Elephant
suffered their first loss of the season.

Abia Warriors are second on the log after two games after the saw off
Katsina United 2-0 at the Umuahia Township Stadium yesterday in a NPFL
    Match Day Two tie.

The Katsina United with Bala Nikyu as head coach were very disciplined
in defence in the early stages of the match and even made few
incursions into the vital area of Abia Warriors without success.

The Umuahia side however got the curtain raiser in the 37th minute
after the Katsina United relapsed allowing Sheriff Bashir to nod the
ball to Godwin Zaki who had the easiest task of tapping the ball into
an empty net while they doubled their lead in the 54th minute through
Seun Olulayo after good work from Obi Samson.

In Lafia, Enugu Rangers recovered from their poor start to the season
to secure a valuable point against Nasarawa United in their return
match to the Lafia Township Stadium.

The Solid Miners broke the deadlock in the 49th minute through Adamu
Hassan but Fortune Omoniwari restored parity for the Flying Antelopes
in the 67th minute to ensure that the reigning league champions pick
their first point of the season after two games.

FC Ifeanyiubah went goal berserk in Nnewi after the dismissed MFM 4-0
at the Ifeanyi Ubah International Stadium yesterday.

Goals from Yaya Kone, King Osanga, Jimoh Oni and Ifeanyi Onuigbo
handed them a big win as they nullified the 3-0 deficit recorded
against them after abandoning their match with Kano Pillars last
    weekend.

  • Sunshine’s Manager Happy with Players despite loss to Enyimba

Sunshine Stars were beaten 1-0 in Calabar by former champions, Enyimba International but Coach

of the Akure Gunners, Kayode Olujohungbe had only praises for his players for executing their

    match plan to the letter.

Olujohungbe said after the game that he was angry his side lost but was not angry with his

    players.

“My team actually played according to plan and that is why I am not happy we lost.

“We played according to plan and it was just that moment where they lost concentration that the

    goal came,” Olujohungbe told www.npfl.ng

“We played well and we will just have to continue doing what we are doing in subsequent games,”

    he said.

For Gbenga Ogunbote who was having his first competitive game on the dugout with Enyimba, the

seeming struggle of the People’s Elephant to win the fixture can be attributed to the mechanics

of building a new team in a new environment.

Ogunbote told www.npfl.ng that his team struggled because it is a completely new side he is

    working with.

“You can see the players we listed are very different from the team you saw last season. It has

been very difficult working up a new team because it is a work in progress but we are happy with

    the win,” Ogunbote said.

After a very disappointing 2015/16 League season, Enyimba started the new campaign on a bright

note winning 1-0 against Sunshine Stars in Calabar.

The goal, a 21st minute effort from Ibrahim Mustapha whose innocuous effort from the edge of the

box surprisingly beat Ojo Olorunleke in goal for Sunshine Stars saw Enyimba go one goal up and

    eventually win the game.

Before Mustapha struck, Enyimba could have easily been 3-0 up as Mfon Udoh had a chance on the

17th minute when Samuel Chukwude beat the offside trap and crossed to him but his tame header

    was saved by the goalkeeper.

But as soon as the hosts scored, it seemed Sunshine Stars shook off their lethargy as Alaba

Adeniyi got a chance to draw level in the 29th minute giving Theophilus Afelokhai the option of

punching his shot out for a corner.

It was Alaba Adeniyi again two minutes later who turned provider as his cross to Samad Kadiri

    was volleyed wide.

Enyimba, however tried to end the first half on a high as Chukwude almost made it two in the

42nd minute but his header off a corner was saved off the line by Kelechi Ogor.

A minute later, Stanley Dimgba beat the off side trap, found space in the Sunshine Stars box but

    shot tamely at Olorunleke.

Chukwude was the biggest culprit of the half as he latched onto the desperate clearance by

Olorunleke in added time but facing a wide gapping net was only able to shoot wide.

Six minutes after the restart, the Enyimba gaffer threw in Ismaila Gata for Chukwude and then it

was Sunshine Stars making two changes, Sikiru Babatunde replacing Adeniyi Alaba and Sikiru Alimi

going in for Sunday Oluwadare but it was a cagey 2nd half as Enyimba sat back seemingly

satisfied with the score line while the visitors found it difficult to break the walls.

Just before Mfon Udoh was replaced with Eric Frimpong he was fouled at the edge of the Sunshine

Stars box and picked himself up to take the kick but it went wide.

At a time in the game when it seemed the fans had settled for a 1-0 score line, Ismaila Gata

almost changed the figures on the score board in the 89th minute.

He saw Olorunleke was off his line so he tried to curl the ball in from distance, but the keeper

stylishly tipped the ball over when half the fans at the stadium thought it was in.
