Chelsea ease past Burnley to go second in table

Pedro Neto and Enzo Fernandez delivered a comfortable 2-0 win at Burnley to lift Chelsea to second in the Premier League.

The opener came when Neto met Jamie Gittens’ cross at the far post, while Fernandez sealed victory with a late run into the box after a counter-attack involving Neto and substitute Marc Guiu.

The Blues rarely moved out of second gear during the 90 minutes and were able to rest unused substitute Moises Caicedo, with matches against Barcelona and Arsenal to come.

However, resting players looked a gamble early on as Burnley started brightly, with Jaidon Anthony having two early shots blocked and Loum Tchaouna forcing a save from Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez with a strike from the edge of the box.

Chelsea started slowly and tested Burnley keeper Martin Dubvravka with a tame long-range effort from Trevoh Chalobah.

Chelsea Enzo Fernandez’s wife announces separation

Valentina Cervantes, the wife of Chelsea footballer Enzo Fernandez, announced they are separating.

The Argentine Fernandez and Cervantes have two children: a son born last year and a girl born in 2020.

Following the announcement, Cervantes asked supporters not to start arguments after announcing the split on Instagram.

“Enzo and I have decided to take some distance from each other today,” she wrote in an Instagram story.

“But we will always be family, and we will support each other in everything. Because there are two children involved who need a lot of love from us.

“I know the person Enzo is and what an excellent father he is, as well as the heart he has. And that is enough for me. Please don’t try to create conflicts where there are none.”

According to reports in Argentina, Fernandez has told Cervantes he “feels the need to experience the stage he skipped by choosing family early on.” As such, the 23-year-old has reportedly expressed a desire to live alone.

Fernandez, who cost Chelsea £105million when he joined from Benfica in January 2023, has endured a tough campaign despite being added to the Blues’ leadership group. He captained the Blues in six of their first seven Premier League games, but has since lost his starting spot to Romeo Lavia.

Manager Enzo Maresca appeared frustrated by the Argentina international during Wednesday’s defeat at Newcastle, turning his back after Fernandez misplaced a pass to give Chelsea’s opponents a sight of goal.
