•Adeboye prays for hospital, patients, staff

The Apapa Family of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) has renovated the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja and donated four ICU CR 5000  electric beds.

Other features of the ICU Bed are collapsible side rails and removable head and foot ends.  The church also installed Air conditioners in the ward.

Items donated included the Alpha-Active 4 Mattress, infusion pumps, syringe pumps, bed side lockers and patient monitors. They are supplied by JNC International.

The church’s General Overseer, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, while inaugurating the equipment, prayed that anybody that comes into the unit would not die, but go back home smiling.

“That the healing power of God will begin to operate here. In the entire hospital, the patients will get better. All those that work here, let it be well with them. Take care of their family. Let your healing power flow through them. This day marks a new time of testimony, signs and wonders in the hospital and all other hospitals in Lagos State. All those that have ailments heal them all. We unveil this plague in the name of the Father, of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. God bless you,”the cleric prayed.

Giving reasons for the donation, Pastor Idowu Iluyomade of RCCG, Apapa Family said he was happy along with members of the church for being a blessing to mankind.

He said:“We have been partnering the state in the area of health because we believe one of the duties of the church is to serve God and humanity. This is just another milestone in our CSR project.

“This is a partnership of over 25 years. In the last 10 years we have been able to assist with mobile clinics, hospitals, cancer screening centres, feeding over 6000 people every Sunday within the state. We have rehabilitation centres, and equipped over 500 libraries in the state.”

Head, Anesthesia and Intensive Care (IC), Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Dr Adetinuwe Majekodunmi,   said the hospital was happy with  the donations and the inuaguration of the renovated intensive care unit  at the hospital’s Surgical Emergency

She said it formed part of the church’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) to mark the 10th anniversary of the RCCG Apapa Family. “They reasoned that it is part of improving the services here at LASUTH, that there is the need for some equipment to be upgraded, like the ventilators, monitors, acquired some four years ago.

“With these new equipments now, patients, as usual will experience first class treatment. Though the number to be attended to are much, despite the fact that there are four beds along with the 16 at CCU that make it 20. And still not enough. The beds are always occupied each week of the month round the year. The hospital can do with more because we admit on referrals from other hospitals- private, general or even from neighboring states,” she said.

LASUTH’s Chief Medical Director (CMD), Prof Wale Oke represented by Director of Clinical Services and Training, Prof Ayoade Adedokun, said the church’s gesture to the hospital was to compliment the effort of the state. “Looking at the increasing population of the state the church realised that it could assist the state government to care for the over 15million populace. It is a most welcomed effort. The four-bed ICU facility upgrading will bear a lot of burden along with the ones at the CCU. The burden of patients on this beds cause wear and tear and for RCCG Apapa family to have refurbished and renovated the ward is highly commendable.

“Organisations can also help in our Dialysis Unit.  A lot can still be done in our dialysis unit because the government has put the dialysis unit in place with the dialysers running, so the tear and wear always set in. Organisations can also help patients in the Cochlear implant section. The state government did a lot to assist 10 patients regain their hearing and the number of people that required such intervention are still much on the waiting list,”he said.

Chairman, Health Service Commission, Dr Bayo Aderiye said he was happy with the intervention because personnel were having additional equipment to work with. “The Governor has directed the commission to recruit more personnel across board and we are doing that already. He has issued a directive that every quater we must recruit to replace the retirees, who are exiting the system. That helps with discipline as well because cases of being overworked and committing errors are reduced,” Dr Aderiye said.

BoI donates high-tech equipment to NAFDAC

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC)  has taken delivery of High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC),an essential equipment  for pharmaceutical analyses. It will enhance performance and boost revenue. It was  donated by the Bank of Industry.

At the inauguration at the NAFDAC Central Drug Control Laboratory, Lagos where it is installed, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, Mrs. Binta A. Bello, said the ministry acknowledged the donation because HPLC is an equipment amongst other devices required in NAFDAC laboratory and it is expensive.  ’’Given the limited subventions from the Federal Government, NAFDAC cannot purchase same among other teeming demands, not even  with the Federal Government’s proposed budget for health sector of N304 billion,’’she said.

Before the donation, NAFDAC could not process high output of samples within minutes. But with the acquisition of the HPLC, it can now afford its laboratory analysts to handle various products, as much as 200, within 60 seconds.

The Managing Director of BOI, Waheed Olagunju, said the bank decided to donate the equipment so as to assist members of Small and Medium Scale Enterprises (SMEs) because most of their products could not be registered nor exported because NAFDAC could not analyse them.

“The various investments then get tied down not deliberately by NAFDAC but because it lacked the required tool to do so. HPLC is a very sensitive machine for pharmaceutical analyses. We are happy for this partnership. It is in the best interest of all- BOI, SMEs and NAFDAC and Nigeria. It is a good partnership,” said Olagunju.

The NAFDAC Acting DG, Mrs Yetunde Oni, said the agency is committed to quality and timely releases of laboratory reports, hence its quest for top notch laboratories with adequate equipment and well trained staff to perform optimally at all times.

Mrs Oni said the donation of the latest model of 1260 series of Agilent HPLC to NAFDAC will strengthen its regulatory operations.

“NAFDAC has seven laboratories. Four have international accreditation. It will promote ease of doing business in Nigeria, thereby supporting the vision of President Muhammadu Buhari for a better Nigeria. This HPLC will avail our laboratory analysts the opportunity to work with user-friendly, high in-put, sensitive instrument with multiple detectors that can handle various product types like pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, veterinary and other regulated products. It will also equip our analysts to detect and pronounce on substandard and falsified medical products, as well as unwholesome foods in our collective efforts to protect public health,” she said.

Mrs Oni assured that NAFDAC has obtained ISO/IEC 17025:2005 accreditation in 2015 after due assessment by ANAB Accreditation body from USA. “These certifications help to assure that analytical tests conducted in our laboratory are timely, reproducible and accurate thus fulfilling NAFDAC mandate of ensuring that only safe and right quality medicines are sold and used in the country,” she noted.

Mainland Senior High School, Jibowu, Lagos, has taken delivery of science laboratory equipment worth over N1m courtesy of Dufil Prima Foods Plc, makers of Indomie noodles.

The donation is intended to complement government’s effort to enhance learning especially in Science and Technical Education, according to the firm’s public relations and events manager, Tope Ashiwaju.

He said the donation was part of Dufil’s corporate social responsibility initiative tailored towards education and community development.

“Our joy is to see the teachers fully utilise the laboratory equipment in imparting knowledge that will improve students’ performance in Science subjects, especially in their West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and the National Examination Council (NECO) exams,” he said.

Ashiwaju added that the company has instituted a scholarship scheme for students with remarkable education achievement from secondary school certificate up to masters degree level. He advised beneficiaries to take advantage of this opportunity.

“All I want is for the teachers to take full advantage of the opportunity by taking extra effort to teach the students to learn, stay focused and continue to dish out outstanding results, and the scholarship will be yours”. Ashiwaju explained.

Representing Igbobi Community, the Onisabe of Igbobi Sabe, HRM Oba Owolabi Adeniyi, expressed appreciation of the community to the donor.

He urged students to consolidate on the gesture by ensuring the community produces more successful personalities in the field of Science in the future.

On her part, the Lagos State Director of Projects Education, District 4, Mrs Bolarinwa Folashade, who represented the Tutor-General and Permanent Secretary of the district, said with the nation, the school laboratory will be next to none in the district.

The school Principal, Mr Ayodele Odupe, hoped the gesture would go a long way in changing the face of Science education in the school. He advised other corporate bodies to take after the donor, noting that government alone could not shoulder the responsibility of the education sector.

•Equipment & raw material expo hosts over 4,000 exhibitors, visitors

The diversification effort of the Federal Government may have received a boost with the interest shown by foreign and local investors in manufacturing at the ongoing Nigerian Manufacturing Equipment Expo in Lagos.

Organised by the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN), Raw Materials Research Development Council (RMRDC) and Clarion Events West Africa, the expo is targeted at boosting the technological base of the manufacturing sector.

MAN President Dr Frank Udemba Jacobs said the major challenge of the sector is obsolete machinery and equipment, which impede manufacturers’ efficiency, especially small and medium-scale ones, as they slow down production and inhibit economy of scale.

He said MAN was poised to lead the sector to play its key role in the new vision of the nation, with the belief that Nigeria has the potential to become one of the leading industrialised economies of the world.

He urged SMEs to learn new processes on how to boost their production output, reduce cost, improve product quality and manufacture for new markets. Jacobs observed that the infusion of Nigeria Raw Materials (NIRAM) expo into the Nigeria Manufacturing  Equipment (NME) would afford exhibitors and visitors a rare opportunity of exposure to the entire manufacturing value chain including machinery, equipment, financial services, professional consultancy and information on raw materials.

Minister of Science & Technology Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu urged  manufacturers to patronise indigeneous raw materials for their production. He said that was the only way the economy could grow as it had a multiplier effect.

The minister, who was represented by RMRDC Director, Investment Consultancy Services Department, Dr. Zainab Hammanga, said the Federal Government was in support of the growth of the private sector. He urged them to make use of RMRDC raw materials technology data. He further asked investors to show interest in sponsoring alternative raw material investigation and subsequent usage in the sector.

RMRDC Director-General Dr. Hussaini D. Ibrahim noted that over 10 billion raw materials were available in the country with every state having over 10,000 metric tonnes of solid materials. He argued that indigenous manufacturers had no reason to import raw materials or machinery.

On what RMRDC has achieved over time, Ibrahim, who was represented by a Director, Dr. Moses Omojola, said their studies made the nation a net exporter of cement with over 25 million metric tonnes yearly compared to 2002 when the nation imported the product.

On ceramics, he said the nation had stopped the importation of ceramic materials for tiles and was working on having alternative raw material for water closet (WC).

A fish processor, Mr. Tunde Sanni, urged RMRDC to seek alternative ways to ensure locally-processed fish were competitive. He said the nation’s smoked fish were not competitive because of too much smoke.

He challenged RMRDC to come up with a kiln that would be globally competitive. He criticised a policy which does not allow exporters to earn their proceeds in dollars but are given the dollar equivalent.

Sanni stated that this had remained a challenge for indigenous small-scale fish processors. He wondered how the entrepreneurs could earn forex and grow the economy.

President, Nigeria Society of Engineers (NSE), Mr.Otis Oliver Tabugbo Anyaeji, an engineer, encouraged the urged on the need to integrate the human resources with available raw material in the production process.

Managing Director, Clarion Events West Africa, Mr. Dele Alimi, said their belief in the economy encouraged them to be part of the equipment & raw materials expo.

He predicted that the economy would grow beyond projection as a result of the confidence of foreign direct investors who daily draw a stake in the economy.

On the expo, he said: “The expo gives an opportunity to bridge the gap between the small and medium sized organisations in the production of raw material and the thousands of manufacturers. By this we have helped to bridge the gap and provided the needed linkage between the two key aspects of industrialisation. By exposing the raw materials available in different parts of the country through this medium, manufacturers will be saved the rigours of sourcing for forex to import raw materials for their production.”

He also said during the expo, there would be free training, access to finance, retooling and networking across all major sub-sectors of manufacturing. He said the idea was for the expo  to provide solutions to the much-clamoured resource-based production as canvassed by the Federal Government.

    •Donate to IDPs

The Nigeria Navy (NN) yesterday received state-of-the art medical equipment and consumables from a United States of America (USA)-based group, Medshare International.

Valued at about $1.2 million, the items included multifunctional trolleys, laryngoscope, ophthalmoscope, electro-surgical unit, transformer, nebulisers, centrifuge, infanto-meter, drugs, disposable surgery garments, among others.

Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), Vice Admiral Ibok-Ette Ibas, who received the items from the company’s representative, Ephraim Inameti, said some of the items would be sent to Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps in the Northeast.

Ibas, who was represented by the Chief of Administration, Rear Admiral Henry Babalola, promised that naval hospitals will also benefit from the donation and hoped the partnership will continue.

His words: “The Nigeria Navy has always considered the health and well being of its personnel as key to the optimum fulfilment of its constitutional roles.

“It is for this reason that the Navy established its own hospitals and medical centres. These centres have expanded their services from catering for naval personnel and their families to providing for the public.

“The collaboration between the Navy and Medshare International is an initiative I put up to bridge the equipment and consumable shortfall in the navy medical service.

“This equipment will be distributed across navy medical facilities and some to IDPs camps, especially in the Northeast.”

Inameti said if purchased wholesale, the equipment and consumables were worth $1.2 million in the USA. According to him, his company considered Nigeria this time because of the high mortality rate of expectant mothers.

He said: “Total shipment exceeded 36,500kg of vital medical materials, which will strengthen healthcare in Nigeria via the treatment provided by the navy hospitals.

“Although the navy selected online only supplies it needed, there was no dumping of supplies by the U.S. The navy applied for and received 24 Hill-Rom Advanta, 26 skyler S2 hospital beds with mattresses, 40ft containers representing about 4,000 boxes of brand new medical supplies.

“It also received about 120 pieces of medical equipment. Also, special two-week training for doctors and technicians has been scheduled this month to ensure the 120 pieces of biomedical equipment were sustained.

“I also appeal to the Naval Headquarters to put in place permanent template for managing these supplies from the central store to the unit level.”

MAN, RMRDC, others seal deal on equipment financing

The Manufacturing Association of Nigeria (MAN), Raw Material Research & Development Council (RMDC) and Clarion Events West Africa have sealed a deal to host this year’s edition of the Nigerian Manufacturing and Equipment Expo come March in Lagos.

MAN President. Dr. Frank Udemba Jacobs at a media chat said the idea of the event was  in response to government’s commitment to industrialisation and its quest to diversify the economy.  He said it would also provide a veritable platform for Small, Medium Enterprises (SMEs) to learn processes on how to boost their output, reduce cost, drive quality improvement, manufacture for new market and also secure funding for growth.

He said the 2016 maiden edition of the expo made great impact as participants cut across various sectors of the economy. Jacobs stated that a key effect of the maiden expo was the provision of cheaper funding for the industrial sector from the Bank of Industry (Bol).

On expectations for this year, he said: “This year’s event will again give top stakeholders in the private and public sectors opportunity to appraise developments in manufacturing and jointly propose quick-in solutions that will help our country revive its manufacturing sector.”

According to him the event is expected to attract 3,700 visitors and exhibitors including multinationals, large, medium enterprises and other manufacturing equipment distributors from over 120 leading local and international suppliers.

He also said that the expo would provide a rare opportunity of exposure to the entire manufacturing value chain, which includes machinery, equipment, financial support, professional consultancy and raw materials as a result of the merging of the annual Nigeria Raw Materials (NIRAM) expo with it.

  • Nigeria to get 3m euros from Germany for military equipment

Germany is to provide Nigeria with three million Euros for the procurement of surveillance equipment, mobile medical care unit and other support services for the country’s armed forces .

The Minister of Defence, Mansur Dan-Ali, stated this yesterday at a joint news conference with German Defence Minister Ursala Von dar Leyen, at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, in Abuja.

The German minister was in Abuja to hand over some military equipment donated to Nigeria.

Dan-Ali said the money would be provided through the extension of the German Technical Advisory Group Agreement for three years – 2017 to 2020.

The minister said under the existing agreement between the two countries under the group, 2012 to 2016, Germany had donated two mobile care units with extensive care unit facilities to the country.

Also donated to the country by Germany, according to Dan-Ali, are Vallon metal detector/Improvised Explosive Device and Explosive Ordnance Disposal equipment, as well training of personnel and maintenance of the device.

He said Nigeria had also received three Mobile Tactical Ground Surveillance Radar systems from Germany for border security in the Northeast.

The minister thanked Germany for the assistance it had extended to the Nigerian armed forces so far to enhance their capacity to fight the Boko Haram terrorists.

“As we are all aware, terrorism is a threat to the existence of humanity and its development. We must, therefore, continue to stand resolute and united in our fight to stamp terrorism out of the planet,’’ Dan-Ali said.

The German defence minister who handed over the equipment to Dan-Ali, noted that combating terrorism was both “difficult and dangerous.’’

“Everywhere, the terrorists live bloody trail of destruction and death and time and again, they single out the most vulnerable of their targets like children just like the Boko Haram does in Nigeria.

“This is why it is in our common interest that the population at home in my country, as well as here in Nigeria is safe so that the economy can grow again.

“Because that is the basis for jobs and prosperity so people can believe in the future in their homeland,’’ Leyen said.

According to her, terrorists abuse religion for their evil purposes. Terrorists spread terror and violence all over the world, in France, Belgium, Aghanistan, Iraq, Turkey, Germany and here in Nigeria.

Leyen said the objective of the cooperation between her country and Nigeria was to assist the country to “conduct crisis prevention, crisis management and peace building operations.’’

“To complement this, Germany is focusing on practical, very concrete issues – the capability and equipment the Nigerian servicemen need most urgently such as the protection against the many IEDs place by the Boko Haram.’’

She noted that Nigeria was fighting a hard but most important fight, promising the support of her country.
