As reported by SportPremi, Chelle also highlighted Victor Osimhen’s impact, calling him “the best striker in the world.” The forward’s leadership and attacking presence continue to make him central to Nigeria’s success in the qualifiers.

    Focus Turns to the Playoffs

The Super Eagles of Nigeria will now shift attention to the upcoming CAF playoff stage, where they will compete with Cameroon, Gabon, and DR Congo for one of the remaining World Cup spots. The playoff draw, to be determined by the FIFA World Rankings on October 23rd, will decide which African side advances to face an opponent from Asia, Oceania, or South America in a final intercontinental decider.

Chelle told SportPremi that maintaining focus and discipline will be key as the team looks ahead to the next phase.

“It is not yet finished,” he said. “It will be very difficult, but tonight I am happy for the players. They brought us the victory that helps push us to the next level.”

In his post-match comments, Chelle dismissed concerns over the absence of the reigning African Player of the Year, Adewmola Lookman stating that the Super Eagles remain focused and confident heading into the encounter.

The Malian tactician maintained that the team has enough depth to compete effectively despite the setback.

Chelle, who has consistently praised Lookman’s quality and influence, noted that while the forward’s suspension is unfortunate, the squad possesses the character and determination to secure victory.

He stressed that the focus now lies on making the most of the players available and ensuring a strong performance against Benin.

He emphasised that every player must be mentally prepared to contribute, whether as a starter or substitute.

Chelle underlined the importance of maintaining focus and converting chances in the decisive match, reiterating his belief that Nigeria must take full control of their qualification destiny.

Despite the win over Lesotho, Nigeria remain third in Group C behind leaders Benin Republic and second-placed South Africa.

Chelle eyes Akinsamiro for World Cup qualifiers

Head coach of the senior national team of Nigeria Eric Chelle has on loan Inter Milan midfielder Ebenezer Akinsamiro on his list of possible targets ahead of the resumption of games in the world cup qualifiers in October, OwnGoalNigeria.com reports.

Nigeria will head into the final two rounds of games in the the world cup qualifiers with doubts over the availability of the midfield duo of Raphael Onyedika of Club Brugge and Fisayo Dele-Bashiru of Italian Serie A side Lazio.

In their absence Chelle who can still count on the likes of Alhassan Yusuf, Frank Onyeka, Uche Chrisantus and fit again Wilfred Ndidi is looking at Akinsamiro who has impressed in the Serie A with Pisa.

Chelle was impressed with his man of the match performance against Napoli despite his team losing the game by 2-3. It was his third straight game in the Italian top division.

He sees the 20 year old in the same mould as young defender Benjamin Fredrick who got his debut in the last round of games and impressed mightily in the games against Rwanda and South Africa respectively. Like Akinsamiro, Fredrick is on loan to Belgium side FC Dender from English Premier League side Brentford where he won the club’s player’s player of the year award at U21 level last season.

Battle of Bloemfontein: Confident  Chelle, Ekong  galvanize  Super Eagles against Bafana Bafana

Captain William Ekong has assured that there will be no diffidence in the Super Eagles’ play when they take on South Africa’s Bafana Bafana in a potentially-explosive 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying match in Bloemfontein tonight.

The defender, who was voted Man of the Competition at last year’s Africa Cup of Nations finals in Cote d’Ivoire, said the Eagles will also not be thinking of their penalty shootout defeat of the Bafana at that competition’s semi-final stage.

“We defeated them at the Africa Cup but that is in the past and some changes have been made to both teams since then. Our approach will be devoid of arrogance; we will play with level heads and go all out for victory. There will be no arrogance but we will not be diffident either.

“South Africa is a good team that we respect but we just have to go on the pitch and play our game. Our objective has not changed; we want to go to the FIFA World Cup finals next year.”

Coach Eric Chelle said he will be putting his best foot forward from the first blast of Gabonese referee Pierre Ghislain Atcho’s whistle at the Toyota Stadium.

“We have come here to play for the three points, so we will be sending out the team that will get the job done. We are happy to have overcome Rwanda but we have to conquer here tomorrow in order to be in a good position for the qualification.”

Although Nigeria started the race poorly, Chelle has picked seven points out of nine in his three games with the squad and believes the group he has been working with has the capacity to turn things on its head and leave Bafana Bafana in the ditch.

After Monday’s official training at the Toyota Stadium, Nigeria’s High Commissioner to the Republic of South Africa, His Excellency Tope Ajayi challenged  the Super Eagles to enact their best game and pluck the three points on the day.

“I have the confidence that we will win, and many South Africans also believe that Nigeria will win. We should go out there and play with gusto, confidence and courage, and refuse to be intimidated by anything.

“When the Super Falcons came here to play the Banyana Banyana, I told them before the game that I could see them returning to the Olympics after 16 years, and they did. Now, I am telling you that I am seeing you at the 2026 FIFA World Cup and it will be so.”

Today’s game will kick off at 6pm South Africa time (5pm in Nigeria).

Adepoju to Chelle: Go for the win, not a draw

Three-time World Cup player Mutiu Adepoju has urged Eric Chelle to stay focused on securing victory for Nigeria despite criticism following the team’s exit from the CHAN tournament.

Adepoju, who was a member of the Super Eagles at the 1994, 1998, and 2002 World Cups, also expressed confidence that Ademola Lookman will be fit to face Rwanda on Saturday.

The former Real Madrid forward stressed the importance of the team maintaining concentration and delivering results despite mounting pressure from fans.

“Everybody knows the importance of the game they is going to be played now,” Adepoju told allnigeriasoccer.com.

“The advice is for him and the players to be focused and go for the win. Because that’s what is going to make everybody happy.”

He further urged the team not to rest on their laurels if they defeat Rwanda, stressing the need to maintain a positive mentality throughout the qualifiers.

“Even when they win this one doesn’t mean that we have qualified. He has to win all the games remaining and what for what happens with other team.”

Meanwhile, concerns remain over Ademola Lookman’s fitness ahead of the crucial clash, as he is yet to make an appearance for Atalanta this season.

Chelle recalls Awaziem, Osho back in Super Eagles provisional squad for World Cup qualifiers

The Ligue 1 duo of Chidozie Awaziem and Gabriel Osho have been handed a recall to the senior national team of Nigeria for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers games against Rwanda and South Africa, respectively, OwnGoalNigeria.com can exclusively reveal.

Head coach Eric Chelle is said to have been impressed with the way they have started the season in France, and with William Troost Ekong battling to be match fit and Semi Ajayi unavailable due to injury, the coach has handed a return to the duo.

Awaziem was solid for Nantes in their 0-1 defeat to PSG, while Osho stood tall for Auxerre, leading them to a 1-0 win over Lorient. Both players will be hoping to make the final list when the coach picks his final 23 man list.

Nigeria will open camp in Uyo on Monday, September 1, as focus shifts to two pivotal fixtures in their qualification campaign.

First up, the Super Eagles will host Rwanda at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium on Saturday, September 6, for their Matchday 7 tie. Then, they’ll head south to Bloemfontein to face South Africa in a high-stakes Matchday 8 showdown on Tuesday, September 9.

  • We’ll continue to work on our playing pattern — Eric Chelle

We’ll continue to work on our playing pattern — Eric Chelle

The Super Eagles head coach, Eric Chelle, says his team would continue to work on their playing pattern and try to find balance.

Chelle made the remarks during a post-match press conference at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow on Friday night.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that an under-strength Nigeria side held Russia’s in-form Sbornaya to a 1-1 draw in an entertaining friendly match in Moscow.

Goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali, defenders Ola Aina and Calvin Bassey, midfielder Wilfred Ndidi and forwards Ademola Lookman, Victor Osimhen and Samuel Chukwueze were all absent from the match.

Nevertheless, the three-time African champions showed grit and courage in refusing to bow at a packed Luzhniki Stadium that shook now and again as the crowd purred.

Chelle said that the absence of some of his key players made the match a little difficult, adding however that the team would continue to work on their playing pattern and find balance.

“Now we are talking about the future of my team as we are preparing for the World Cup qualifiers.

“We made lots of changes to the squad and our usual pressing game was a bit difficult because the new players are yet to fully understand how we want to play.

“So, we need to keep working on our playing pattern and try to find balance,” he said.

The Franco-Malian gaffer however admitted that the match was a very tough one against a strong opponent.

“Russia has a good team with lots of pressure and technical qualities.

“We did not play well in the first half. We didn’t enforce our pressing game so we’ll.

“But we were better in the second half with our pressing and that made the difference for us. It was not an easy game.

“When I say the game was not easy, it was because we played against a very good team. They had their chances in the first half and they took it, we had our chance but the keeper saved it.

“In the second half, Russia had two chances, and we had one or two, and we scored,” he said.

In the absence of the illustrious forwards, Victor Boniface got another chance to shine.

But in the 8th minute, he put too much power in chesting the ball from a cross by Bruno Onyemaechi, and the Russian defence was easily let off.

In the 27th minute, Ajayi unwittingly diverted the ball into his own net beyond a stranded goalkeeper Maduka Okoye.

This was after Viktor Melyokhin streamed past Bright Osayi-Samuel on the right and sent the ball into the box.

On the back foot but unbowed, the Eagles continued to knock the ball around while searching for openings in an airtight Russian defence.

Raphael Onyedika, Frank Onyeka and Fisayo Dele-Bashiru were resplendent in the midfield, and captain William Ekong, Ajayi, Osayi-Samuel and Bruno Onyemaechi held the back-line firm.

Five minutes from recess, the Super Eagles got the break they needed to draw level, as Dele-Bashiru waltzed his way past the defenders, and came face to face with the inscrutable Matvei Safonov.

Safonov however won the battle of wits, diverting the ball over the sticks.

Substitute Tolu Arokodare got the needed equaliser for Nigeria in the 71st minute, barely 10 minutes after he replaced Boniface in attack.

This was when he opted to chase every ball as the Russian defenders passed among themselves, and as Safonov underhit the ball, the Belgium-based forward sprang forward and slotted into the far corner.

It was Arokodare’s first goal for Nigeria, and was no more than Nigeria’s endeavour deserved.

The result meant Nigeria kept its unbeaten record in the year 2025, ahead of two crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying games against Rwanda and South Africa in three months’ time.

The Super Eagles, lying fourth in their group, will host Rwanda’s Amavubi in the first week of September.

The team will then fly out to Johannesburg four days later to tackle group leaders Bafana Bafana of South Africa in what could be a flaming war.

  • Chelle juggles list for  Russia aftermath  of injuries, withdrawals

Chelle juggles list for  Russia aftermath  of injuries, withdrawals

Ekong, Simon, Boniface, 16 others in Moscow

A number of withdrawals and injuries to some players have combined to alter the list of players who will appear for Nigeria in Friday’s international friendly match in Moscow, from the original list drawn up by Super Eagles’ Head Coach Eric Chelle.

The goalkeeping sector is unaffected as first choice Stanley Nwabali was not listed for the trip in the first place, as a result of the upcoming burial rites for his late parents. Italy-based Maduka Okoye and Tanzania-based Amas Obasogie will still fight for the goal-tender’s starting shirt.

In the rear-guard, captain William Ekong is in Moscow alongside Bright Osayi-Samuel, joining the Unity Cup trio of Bruno Onyemaechi, Semi Ajayi and Igoh Ogbu. However, Nottingham Forest’s Ola Aina excused himself from the friendly, and Coach Chelle has had to draft in the Unity Cup duo of Sodiq Ismaila and Benjamin Fredericks.

Former junior international Fredericks impressed on his debut against Jamaica on Saturday.

In the midfield, injury to Wilfred Ndidi has handed Enugu Rangers’ ace Saviour Isaac the opportunity to shine. Isaac is a key member of the Eagles B, which will participate in the African Nations Championship finals in August. He will join Frank Onyeka, Raphael Onyedika, Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, Christantus Uche and Papa Daniel Mustapha to fight for shirts in the middle of the pack.

At the fore, Unity Cup ace Samuel Chukwueze, and Kelechi Iheanacho, have excused themselves to attend to family matters, while Spain-based Sadiq Umar has suffered an injury. Nathan Tella’s United Kingdom passport is undergoing a renewal process, so he is unable to travel.

This situation has left Chelle with only Victor Boniface, Simon Moses and Tolu Arokodare in the attack, and he has had to call up Russia-based former junior international Olakunle Olusegun, who plays for Krasnodar FC.

Meanwhile, 18 players including William Troost-Ekong, Moses Simon   have arrived in Moscow  while training sessions  begin today.

The match will take place at the 78,000-capacity Luzhniki Stadium, which is the largest football stadium in Russia and the ninth-largest in the whole of Europe.

  • Super Eagles struggling with my ‘pressing’  style, says Chelle

Super Eagles struggling with my ‘pressing’  style, says Chelle

Nigeria head coach Eric Chelle has revealed that the Super Eagles struggled in the second half of their hard-fought 2-1 victory over Ghana in the semi-final of the 2025 Unity Cup at the Gtech Community Stadium in London before they were exhausted from the fast paced first half.

The Super Eagles began the game with perennial rivals, the Black Stars like house on fire and dominated the first half, racing to a 2-0 lead courtesy of a smart finish from Cyriel Dessers — his third international goal — and an own goal by Ghana’s Razak Simpson off  Semi Ajayi’s beautiful header.

However, the tide shifted dramatically in the second half. The Black Stars came out rejuvenated, pressing higher and creating more chances, while Nigeria appeared to lose energy and struggled to maintain their earlier intensity.

Chelle, who took charge of the Super Eagles earlier this year, believes fatigue played a major role in the drop-off.

According to the Franco-Malian coach, his team’s aggressive pressing game in the first half took a toll on the players physically.

“My philosophy is [that] I want to make some high pressure on the pitch, but the system is very difficult for the players,” Chelle said at the post-match press conference.

“My dream is that I want my team to keep up the high pressure for 90 minutes. But I think it is impossible. So we need to work and improve.”

The scenario bore similarities to Nigeria’s disappointing draw against Zimbabwe during their last World Cup qualifier in Uyo, where they faded late in the game after taking the lead.

Chelle is confident that with more time and consistent training sessions, his players will adapt better to his style and become more resilient in the latter stages of matches.

“Since I’ve been the coach of this team, I’ve had maybe seven or eight training sessions. We have played three games — two wins and one draw. We need to improve. We need to work. The players need to know what I want,” he said.

“I think we made a great first half and in the second half we were tired. My guys, I’m so proud of them because they fight. It was difficult, but I see that they deserve — we deserve — the victory.”

Nigeria’s win over their eternal rivals sees them advance to the final of the 2025 Unity Cup, where they will face Jamaica. The Reggae Boyz booked their spot with a thrilling 3-2 win over Trinidad and Tobago in the other semi-final.

The final promises to be a fitting climax to the friendly tournament in London, with Chelle’s young side looking to crown their progress with silverware.

London Unity Cup: Chelle, Addo  talk tough ahead of West African showdown

    From Wole Omoogun, London

As excitement builds ahead of the much-anticipated clash between Nigeria and Ghana in the Unity Cup at the Gtech Brentford Community Stadium, both head coaches have shared their thoughts on what promises to be a fiery encounter between two of Africa’s football giants.

Super Eagles head coach, Eric Chelle, praised Ghana’s pedigree in the game but expressed confidence in his own squad’s potential to make a mark.

“It’s a great cup. Ghana has a great coach, but we have a crop of good players and a great team. I am focused on bringing something new to the team. We want to improve,” Chelle said.

On the other side of the touchline, Otto Addo, head coach of the Black Stars, reflected on the deep-rooted rivalry and the emotional significance the game carries—not just in West Africa, but among diaspora communities around the world.

“The rivalry between the two countries dates back many years, and my young team are very aware of what lies ahead,” Addo stated.

He went on to share personal memories that illustrate just how far-reaching the rivalry is.

“I hear stories of this rivalry from my youth, and remember when my uncle always took me to watch games that Nigeria are a great rival whenever we play. I know how important this is, and how it’s important for our communities even here in London,” he added.

With passion, pride, and regional bragging rights on the line, tomorrow’s fixture promises to deliver yet another chapter in one of Africa’s most storied football rivalries.
