Only  Chelle can defend Super Eagles list, says Bolaji Douglas

Barely two weeks to the  2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe, coach Eric Sekou Chelle , has released a  39-man list for the two upcoming  Super games.  Erstwhile BCC Lions and Shooting Stars defender, Bolaji Douglas believes only the Franco- Malian  can defend the bogus squad in a conversation with TUNDE LIADI.

Former frontline defender on the domestic football scene, Bolaji Douglas has advised Nigerians to adopt a watch-and-wait attitude after Super Eagles’  coach Eric Sékou Chelle unveiled a 39-man provisional squad  for this month’s upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe.

The Super Eagles are already in trough with three points from their opening four matches in their Group C section and Douglas reckoned that Chelle has a big task to prune down the list to a sizeable number  before the March 21st  and 25th  ties respectively in Kigali and Uyo .

“He probably has his reasons for this list. But there are names on that list that have no business being there based on their form,” Douglas, who won the now-rested Cup Winners Cup title with BCC Lions in 1990, told NationSport. “Which begs the question what is the criteria for selecting players to the national team these days?

“I don’t know how this list was arrived at or what informed the choice of the players, so it is best one sits back , wish the team well and watch what unfolds.”

The former tough tackling central defender faulted the invitation handed to Kano Pillars winger, Ahmed Musa and Middlesbrough’s attacker, Kelechi Iheanacho, adding these two have blocked spaces that could have been occupied by some other in-form players.

He said both players have past their prime and should not have been invited in the first place since the national team is not a rehabilitation centre.

“It is easy to spot the names. Ahmed Musa has served the nation very well; i don’t see what he is still doing there. He is blocking someone’s position. Kelechi Iheanacho has struggled this season. Those two readily come to mind,” Douglas added.

“The national team should never become a rehabilitation centre or a place to come and wind down from the hectic demands on the players by their clubs season.

“While it may be said that now is not the time to experiment with new players, it can equally be said that there should be no room for those not on top of their games,” he said.

He added that considering the precarious situation of the Super Eagles in the World Cup qualifiers, it won’t augur well for Chelle to experiment with the Eagles that would face Rwanda and Zimbabwe, both games they must win if they still harbour World Cup hope.

He pointed out that players in the new look Super Eagles should be called up on current form and not based on sentiments if Nigeria is eager to stage a comeback in the qualifiers.

The winning skipper of the 1993 and 1994 FA Cup with BCC Lions , acknowledged that the coming of Chelle may help rekindled Super Eagles World Cup aspirations as the players would be eager to convince the new coach but stressed  there are no margins for errors.

“ Chelle must bring his top game to show doubters that he is the best person for the job,” he stressed.

He said the first step towards ensuring a new order is for Chelle to stamp his authority as the head coach and not allowing external forces to run his team.

The Kwara Water Corporation graduate said that the new coach must show he is fully in charge for the players to close ranks and know that it is different from the previous norms, adding that Chelle must instil his philosophy and ensure it is easily understood by the players enough for them to play to their potential and do well in the upcoming games.

“There is always a bounce effect as a result of a new coach, but i think this is not automatic, the coach must first demonstrate that he has come to run changes on the team,” Douglas, who was in the Nigeria’s contingent to the 1987 World University Games in Zagreb, Croatia, disclosed.

“It shouldn’t be the old order where the players feel it is the same old song. If it is like that, they will simply resort to the old norm.

“Chelle has little or no room for error. One can only hope that he knows enough about our team and players to step in and bring out the best in the players.

“I want to believe he took the job because he has a plan in place, he should go in carry out the job believing in his own convictions , football first , shenanigans later,” he concluded.

  • World Cup 26 Qualifiers: Lawal defends Chelle on 39-man list for Rwanda, Zimbabwe

World Cup 26 Qualifiers: Lawal defends Chelle on 39-man list for Rwanda, Zimbabwe

Former Nigeria international midfielder  Garba Lawal  has enjoined  the public and press to rally behind  coach  Eric Sekou Chelle  rather than  dwelled on the suitability  or otherwise of some of the  players  the Franco-Malian has enlisted  for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup  qualifiers against  Rwanda and Zimbabwe.

Chelle on Tuesday  unveiled a 39-man Provisional  List of players for the must-win encounters  but not without scathing comments  about the  justification of extending  invitations to  some players  including ‘retiring’ Ahmed Musa  and struggling Kelechi Iheanacho, among others.

But Lawal  is having none of that, adding  Chelle  has made his choices  and  it’s left for Nigerians to  support the Super  Eagles all the way irrespective of the lop-sidedness of  the provisional squad.

“ The list has been made, what is the fuss about just talking? He (Chelle) has already presented his list,” Garba, a member of the technical department of the Nigeria Football Federation, said matter-of-factly. “The only thing we can do is to wish the players  the best of luck .”

He continued:  “It is not about saying this one  is in  and that one is out but what is important is for us to win the games .Whether Mr. A  or B is playing  doesn’t concern us   because  we are not the ones to train the players .The coach will try his best, so let us  give the coach  the chance and see how far he can go.”

After taking just three points  in their opening four matches which perched them  in a distant fifth position in  Group C,  Lawal admitted  that  there is no time to discuss inanities rather,  what  the  Chelle-led Super Eagles need now is support and focus ‘because all the remaining games are like cup finals.

“ Personally, there is really nothing to talk about  that he has presented 39 players; whether you are in or out,  you are  not important,” the Atlanta 1996 Soccer gold winner, further said in the interview aired on Brila fm. “ One day, everybody  would get their chances to represent the country.”

“ The most important  thing is for the fans back home is to wish the team  the best of luck after all we are not the ones to train the players We have to stand by the coach, he is new  and we have to give him a chance .

“ Every game is like a cup final for us now  because of the situation we are now ; there is no room for complacency rather let us just focus on the games.

“ We hope they will succeed and that is the most important anyway,”  added the midfield Trojan who  represented Nigeria at four African Cup of Nations between  2000 and 2006..

Chelle plots ‘ambitious’ Eagles for AFCON, World Cup

As the Super  Eagles  gear up for  the  2026 FIFA World Cup  qualifiers in March  as well as the  2025  Africa  Cup of Nations  in December,  Franco Malian coach Eric Sekou Chelle  has  revealed his operational words, saying  the national team under his watch will be ‘ focussed and ambitious’.

Speaking with the NFFTV, the 47-year-old Chelle  who was named  the substantive Head Coach of the Super Eagles on January 7, enthused that  he has ‘lots of good players’ to work with, adding  the rank and file of the team  must however, remains focus  for the  upcoming engagements.

Chelle  has been tasked  to  revive  Nigeria’s bid  for the World  Cup 2026  after the  Super Eagles  took only three points from the opening four matches  in Group C where they are in a distant fifth position in a section  that  houses Rwanda, South Africa, Benin, Lesotho and  Zimbabwe.

Looking pleased with  Monday’s  AFCON Draw that  put the Super  Eagles in the same pool  with the Carthage Eagles of Tunisia, Cranes of Uganda and Taifa Stars of Tanzania for Morocco 2025, Chelle who  led Mali to a quarter-final finish at AFCON 2023, remains  confident about his new wards.

“For the  AFCON, we  have a  great t team and we can beat anyone, we a  strong time but we have to focus on the  World Cup qualification  and in October , we can be talking about the AFCON,” the former Lens’ defender said. “Now we have to focus on one goal and the focus now is the next  game (World Cup qualifier) against Rwanda and then Zimbabwe.

With a surfeit of talents to call on, Chelle said he was already  think  about his possible selections for the upcoming  World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe in March, even as he reaffirmed his buzz word: focus.

He continued: “Now, I have to think about my first selection  and we would be ready. But we need to focus on our (next) games… lots of Nigerian players  are really very good.

“We need to be focussed  because we have a lot of  good teams that deserve  to win this cup (AFCON) and it would be a great  to fight for this cup (AFCON).

“ But for a national team like the Super Eagles,   can be so ambitious,” he added.
