  • Suspect shot in failed bid to escape from Ondo court

A SUSPECT arraigned for contravention of  Ondo State government’s ban on commercial motorcycle operation was shot yesterday after attempting to escape at a Chief Magistrate’s Court located at Olukayode House, Akure.

The suspect was granted bail by the court, but could not perfect the bail conditions. He attempted to escape as he was about to be conveyed to Olokuta Prisons.

The suspect ran towards Oshinle quarters in the state capital.

Prison wardens shot sporadically to foil his bid, a situation which made lawyers and judges to scamper for safety.

The accused person was re-arrested  and brought back to the court.

But in another round of sporadic shooting by the prison guards, the suspect was allegedly shot.

He was hurriedly pushed into the prison van and taken to the prison.

Sources at the prison said the suspect had been taken into solitary confinement in the “Prison Guard room” as a punishment for attempting to escape.

A lawyer, Charles Titiloye, who was in court during the incident, condemned the excessive use of force by the prison guards.

  • Black Saturday: A survivour’s story of narrow escape

Black Saturday: A survivour’s story of narrow escape

One year after the tragic immigration job exercise that claimed 15 lives and injured so many young Nigerians across the country, Yetunde Oladeinde takes a trip down memory lane with one of the victims.

In search of a better future, some youths thronged the venues of the Nigeria Immigration Service recruitment exercise on March 15, last year. For them it was an opportunity they had been waiting for, an opportunity they believed would bring them closer to their dreams. Unfortunately this was not to be. The poorly organised recruitment exercise resulted in an unprecedented crowd disaster that eventually led to the death of 15 young Nigerians, who had thronged the various centres across the country.

Onyebuchi Collins, one of those who applied in the 2014 exercise tells his story: “I applied last year at the Lagos centre online and paid the N1000 fee at Fidelity Bank, Allen Avenue. My wife also applied and we were very hopeful. When we saw the advert for recruitment, we were excited and fulfilled all the necessary requirements. On the fateful day we went to the National Stadium in Surulere. It was fun and we felt like young corps members at the orientation camp once again. We had to identify self, submit all the documents brought and we were shocked to see them just dump the applications in the open space.”

Collins adds that: “When they started distributing the forms, people were falling over themselves. We could not stand well and everybody just had to scribble something in the forms that was provided at the venue. A lot of people sustained injuries; while others lost valuables, while trying to submit their scripts and leave. A number of us realised at that point that what they were doing was just formality. Thereafter, confusion set in. Many asked them to refund the N1000 but nothing has happened. I am still jobless, one year after; and my wife had to resort to all kinds of things for survival. She is a graduate of Accounting from Nsukka.”

Collins also said he also did the Nigerian Ports Authority examination in Enugu. “I travelled all the way last year to do the exams. I applied in Lagos but they posted me to Enugu to sit for the exams, I met a lot of people there and the crowd was also like the Immigration recruitment. We have not also heard from them and when you get to the Ports authority office in Marina, they keep telling you that there is no information. I don’t want to apply for the NIS job again because I do not have faith in the process. I have been discouraged. Before now, my wife and i worked in a bank, but there was a cash lite policy and we both lost our jobs in 2011.”

One of the questions begging for answers is the need for application fee from poor applicants before job placement, consideration this is all happening at federal parastatals and institutions, run by citizens’ tax money. Sadly, it would be recalled that the same thing happened in 2010, when the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) advertised vacancy in some positions and slammed a price tag for applicants. “It is a case of robbing Peter to pay Paul, especially for positions that are over-subscribed. Where do they expect unemployed graduates to get money from? Where is the much talked about hope for youths by our leaders? This is all very frustrating,” says Vivian Adigun who has been in the labour market for about five years.

Interestingly, a year after the disaster a fresh Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) recruitment exercise is ongoing and in fact ends today, Sunday March 22, 2015. Tagged Massive Graduate Recruitment, the three categories to be filled are: Superintendent Cadre, Inspectorate cadre and Immigration Assistant cadre. This year, the application is free. A statement posted online by the presidential committee assisting the recruitments states that “No payment is required to submit an application; any person who seeks to submit application or obtain appointment via other means does so at his or her own risk.” 37 locations are listed across the country and many wonder if the same process used last year would not be used again.

    Belated succour

Ironically, the Federal Government last week doled out the sum of five million naira to each of the families that lost their relatives in the tragedy last year. The question on the lips of many is why the present administration has not sanctioned those who sent innocent job seekers to their early graves after extorting them. “It is sad that all those involved in the scam have not been brought to book. The Interior Minister, Mr. Abba Moro who presided over the project is still in office and it makes us ridiculous as a nation”, says Biodun Bakare another unemployed graduate.

In 2012, the NIS did not advertise the vacant posts in the agency. Then the service explained that it wanted to avoid a repeat of the rush during the 2006 recruitment exercise when many applicants also died. The aftermath of that was that, the service came under intense heat for allegedly allotting slots to the first lady, Dame Patience Jonathan and favouring applicants from the South East, where the then NIS comptroller, Rose Uzoma hailed from and other top government functionaries.

Frustration and anger took over and the drumbeats of enquiry into the matter came from different quarters. For a while it looked like justice was close by, but till date the principal actors have not been brought to book. Many continue to exploit the unemployment situation in the country, promising jobs that do not exist, and reaping bountifully there-from.

Mid-last year, three people were paraded in Abuja for allegedly duping job seekers of more than N930, 000 on the pretext of offering them employment into the service. “We want to bring to the notice of the public that people are going about trying to trick Nigerians that are eager to get jobs. We have one who has been going about offering fake letters of employment to people from Edo State, claiming they would give those jobs in the Nigeria Immigration service. The issue of employment in the NIS has been well documented, there is a presidential committee that is already looking into this,” David Parradang, the comptroller General of the service said.

  • 29 Ebola patients escape after attack

Armed men attacked an Ebola isolation ward in the Liberian capital Monrovia Saturday night, prompting 29 patients to flee the facility, witnesses said yesterday.

“They broke down the doors and looted the place. The patients all fled,” said Rebecca Wesseh, who witnessed the attack and whose report was confirmed by residents and the head of Health Workers Association of Liberian, George Williams.

The Kenyan government at the weekend said it would bar passengers travelling from Sierra Leone, Guinea and Liberia.

The suspension is effective midnight tomorrow for all ports of entry for people travelling from or through the countries, said Kenya’s Health Ministry. Nigeria was not included in the ban, which also allows entry to health professionals and Kenyans returning from those countries.

Two suspects, Messrs Lekwa Uzor and Ruben Okezie, arrested by the police in

Aba, Abia State for allegedly kidnapping a Chinese, Mrs. Tang, have been shot dead by the anti-robbery squad while trying to escape.

The Nation learnt that the men were arrested at locations in the Aba metropolis by the police after a tip- off.

Investigation showed that they were part of a kidnap syndicate, which

abducted the Chinese, wife of Mr. Christian Kalu, an indigene of Amaekpu Item in Bende Local Government.

A source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the suspects confessed to the police that they were the mastermind of some of the kidnaps in Aba, including Mrs. Tang’s abduction.

The source said the suspects took the police anti-robbery squad to their base at Ihie Oji in Obingwa Local Government where their colleagues were hiding.

He added that while the policemen were approaching Ohuru Isimiri, hoodlums, suspected to be members of the gang, opened fire on them (police). Efforts to save their lives were said to have been futile, as they died from gunshot injuries.

Police spokesman Geoffrey Ogbonna confirmed the death of the suspects. He said they died before they could be taken to hospital.

Ogbonna said Mrs. Tang had been rescued and she had reunited with her husband. He did not confirm if any ransom was paid.

  • Another lucky survivor of Edo tanker fire recalls miraculous escape:I smashed the bus’ window and jumped out

Another lucky survivor of Edo tanker fire recalls miraculous escape:I smashed the bus’ window and jumped out

Scores of families were sent into mourning on April 5 when a fuel tanker collided with a luxury bus on the Benin-Ore Expressway and no fewer than 60 people were burnt to death. Mr. Chinenye Ozoekwe, an indigene of Anambra State and one of the two survivors of the tragic incident, recalls his lucky escape in a chat with ODOGWU EMEKA ODOGWU. Excerpts:

MY name is Chinenye Ozoekwe. I am from Amudo Awka in Anambra State. I was coming back from Lagos. On getting to Ugboji Junction in Benin, Edo State, a tanker that was coming behind us collided with the Young Shall Grow luxury bus we boarded from Lagos and it went up in flames.

    Saving grace

“Out of the over 100 passengers on board, only two of us survived. Some people don’t even believe that any of the people in the bus survived the tragedy. But God’s grace was sufficient and the risk I took turned out to be my saving grace in the accident. I forcefully hit something on the window at the side of the bus where I sat and jumped out. That also was where the second survivor followed. The rage of the fire was too much, and you can see the result.

“My brothers and sisters who were on the trip are no more, but I am alive to tell the story. It is enough reason to thank God Almighty even as I pray for God’s enabling grace for the families who lost their love ones to have the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.”

    Mission to Lagos

“I had gone to look for job in Lagos. My parents are no more and I am a commercial motorcycle rider here in Awka. I went to look for job because I am tired of riding okada (commercial motorcycle), coupled with the rumour that Anambra State wants to ban it. On getting to one Construction Company in Lagos, they asked me to bring my credentials, but my WAEC certificate is here in Awka and that was what I was coming back to take to Lagos before the incident occurred.

“I don’t know the identity of the other survivor, but it seems he is from Enugu State. My late mother’s elder sister, Mrs. Obiageli and I thank God for the grace He gave me to take the step that made me to survive to tell the story. A dead man tells no tale. Any assistance given to me would be highly appreciated because my condition is not laughable. “

Ozoekwe’s aunt, Mrs Obiageli Enekwechi, also recalled the steps that were taken to bring him from Benin to Anambra State for treatment.

She said: “I was the one that went to Benin to bring him back after settling the bills. We had all told him that we didn’t like the okada job he was doing and that he should look for a better job. That was why he went to Lagos to look for a job.

“When the accident happened on that Friday, we didn’t know. But he had a girl’s number off hand and through the girl, we were contacted. I called the doctor and he told us to come to Benin; that he survived but was unconscious.

“That was how we brought him back to the Anambra State University Teaching Hospital, Awka, known before now as Amaku General Hospital, Awka. Since then, we have been spending money to buy drugs. Any day we don’t buy drugs because of money, he will not be attended to. And now I don’t have money to spend and they have not even given us the bill for the bed. So, we need assistance from public spirited individuals to save his life.”Enekwechi said she had returned from Zamfara State because of the Boko Haram insurgency. “We came back in December 2012 and up till now, I have not engaged in anything meaningful before this incident occurred, and I have spent the little money I came back with. So, we need government’s assistance in this matter. I am appealing to Governor Peter Obi and all the good people of Anambra State to come to our aid now that it matters most.”

10 escape death in grenade attack on Jos mosque

Ten worshippers escaped death in a mosque in Bukuru, Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State at the weekend after a grenade thrown into the mosque failed to explode.

It was not immediately clear who the brains behind the failed attack were.

The grenade, described as 36 hand grenade, was later taken away by the Special Task Force (STF) on Jos crisis.

An eyewitness, Danjuma Bala, said, “The incident occurred at about 8:30pm on Friday. About 10 people were in the mosque preparing for the Ishai prayers when the grenade was thrown inside by unknown persons.

Media and Information Officer of the STF, Captain Salisu Mustapha, confirmed the incident, sayin, “there was an attempted explosion at a mosque located along Bukuru express way in Jos South Local Government Area on 1st March, 2013 by 0830pm.

“Miscreants threw a 36 hand grenade into a mosque but it failed to explode. Thereafter, they fired shots into the air and escaped. No arrest was recorded.”

Captain Musptapha said operatives of the JTF cordoned off the area to avert a breakdown of law and order.

•The Taraba Governor’s plane crash raises important questions

By the working of providence, the people of Taraba State and, of course Nigerians, are breathing a sigh of grateful relief rather than dripping with tears in an ambience of funeral sadness. The Governor of Taraba State’s escape from death in a plane crash last week, with five other persons also saved the nation the sort of unhappy story that trailed the now familiar story of the Dana Air crash whose many dead the families and the nation still mourn.

The governor, Danbaba Fulani Suntai, is a trained pilot, and until the painful incident, many Nigerians never knew he flew himself in a private jet. Informed sources say he has flown himself regularly, while his colleagues relied on the expertise of pilots. But Suntai is a qualified pilot, even though he is a trained pharmacist.

According the report, he was flying from Jalingo to Yola, but lost contact with the Yola control tower, and that led to the crash. Something good happened and that was the mobilisation of search and rescue personnel to the crash site. The governor and the others on the plane were moved to the hospital. At the time of writing, no fatalities have not been reported.

Governor Suntai has been flown to Germany for treatment. The Taraba State chief executive has the right to fly as a qualified pilot. He trained at the Nigerian College of Aviation Technology, Zaria, Kaduna State in 2010. Given the delicate pressures of his task, we wonder if it was wise of him to take the task of running a state and flying an aircraft at the same time.

Some governors also drive themselves and, even if they reserve the rights to do so, the weighty and intricate workload of their offices advise that they use the services of chauffeurs. Some may say the governors are mature enough to ascertain when the burden is light enough for them to fly an aircraft or sit behind the wheel of a Land Cruiser.

We are not aware whether it was only the loss of contact that cost the crash or whether certain individual inadequacy added to the technical challenge.

It was also reported that after the crash, the new deputy governor, Garba Umar, was harassed by some local politicians acting on the orders of a senator. The misfortune of the governor has suddenly taken the familiar tint of politics. The Taraba State House of Assembly affirmed Suntai as not relinquishing his position as governor.

The political elite could not even allow a collective sense of sobriety overwhelm partisan discord. It is not important whether Governor Suntai is incapacitated or not. According to the constitution, if the governor is sick, the onus lies on the deputy to take charge. This should happen without rancour.

If Umar takes charge though, he will be wrongly labelled with the ambitious tag of usurper. Power abhors vacuum.

Governor Suntai’s failure to travel abroad with others who sustained injuries in the flight is palpably unfair. The governor has the resources to care for himself, but the injuries sustained by the other five came because he piloted them. Even if it was an error of weather or technology, the journey may not have happened if he did not embark on it and asked them to go with him.

Again, if the medical system was not good enough for him as governor, then it means he did not create a good enough system for his fellow citizens. So why should he fly and leave the rest to the weaknesses of our medical system? Their families are protesting and they should. We hope they do not suffer any deaths or lifetime deformities or pathologies that a trip to Germany could have averted. It will be on the governor’s conscience if he returns to bury any victim – or console their families – he left behind.

  • Horror as kidnap suspect slashes own throat in bid to escape

Horror as kidnap suspect slashes own throat in bid to escape

It was a gory sight recently in Benin, capital of Edo State, when an attempt by a kidnap suspect, Moses Otoro, to escape from detention through diabolical means went awry, leaving him battling for life, almost bleeding to death.

According to reports, Otoro had slashed his throat as instructed by a witchdoctor to enable him disappear. But rather than disappear, as promised by the witchdoctor, Otoro was left bleeding profusely from the self-inflicted cut on his throat.

The suspect was arrested by soldiers at Ughelli after he was named as a member of a notorious kidnapping gang by another member of the gang who had earlier been arrested.

Speaking with newsmen, Otoro said he participated in the abduction of five people last year and had received sums ranging from N50, 000 to N150, 000.

Otoro said it was the leader of his gang, whose name he gave as Anthony, that gave him the charm and told him that if he cut his throat, he would disappear.

He said: “I started kidnapping last year. We have kidnapped five persons but I don’t know them. It was Anthony that brought the connection. My own is to drive the vehicle.

“Anthony always collected money for the babalawo (witchdoctor) and the gun we used for the operations. He brought the charm and told me to cut my throat. He said I would disappear the moment my blood touched the ground. It was after I cut my throat that I remembered the babalawo that gave the charm to us.”

Otoro was one of the kidnapping suspects and cultists arrested by men of the 4 Brigade of the Nigerian Army in the last one month.

Also speaking, the witchdoctor, who gave his name as Akugbe Ugbo, aged 75, said Anthony was like a son to him. He declined comment when asked why the charm failed to work.

Ugbo said Anthony went to Port Harcourt and came back with money with which he (Anthony) bought a land and started a building.

According to him, “Anthony lived in my house for more than one year and I was feeding him. He left and came back with money. He said I should pray for him. I even bought the land he wanted to build his house on.”

Another member of the gang, Jacob Umoru, said he was paid N600, 000 from a ransom of N6 million paid to the gang by a female victim.

Other members of the kidnapping gang paraded were Ogue Micheal, Osas Omoh, Osato Ogiraka and Ahomafan Lucky. They had abducted their female victim at Ugbioyoko, but luck ran out on them when vigilant neighbours raised the alarm and called soldiers on patrol.

Narrating her ordeal, the victim, Mrs. Bridget Ize-Iyamu, expressed shock and disappointment over the revelation that her neighbour arranged her kidnapping.

Mrs. Bridget said the kidnappers came in the afternoon and jumped into her car. She said she pleaded with them but they would not listen.

“I was crying and begging them to allow me go and get my children from school. It was while we were going that some youths blocked the road. One of them told the one with the gun to shoot. But when they saw soldiers, they opened the door and ran away. That was how I came out and ran to the soldiers.”

Two students of the Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma identified as Eseni Christian and Osazuwa Evbimarumwen, were also arrested for attempted murder.

Osazuwa said they were on a revenge mission to kill a member of a rival cult group when their shot missed their target and hit a commercial cyclist.

He said their target killed a member of their cult called Livinus.

Also arrested were six students of the College of Education, Ekiadolor for wearing military uniforms within the campus.

The students said they were members of Man O’ War, and that they wore the military uniforms for their handing over ceremony.

A notorious female drug dealer, Mabel Nze, who was arrested by soldiers in August this year and handed over to the NDLEA, was arrested again with substance suspected to be Indian hemp.

The Commander of 4 Brigade, Brigadier-General Abel Umahi, said the breakthrough arrests were due to the use of tracking devices. Umahi said they were after the leaders of the cult group.

He said the command had destroyed more than 15 illegal refineries and arrested four tankers within the last one month, adding that the suspects would be handed over to relevant authorities for prosecution.
