Ekiti broadcaster escapes death over ‘offensive’ phone calls

Popular independent broadcaster in Ekiti State, Dele Alagbon, has escaped death after attacks by unknown individuals who considered his programmes ‘offensive.’

Alagbon,  who is also known as ‘Omo Olope’  in entertainment circles, was waylaid and attacked by a three-man gang on a motorcycle on his way home along Igirigiri road,  Odo Ado, Ado-Ekiti last Wednesday night.

The embattled presenter hosts programmes on radio and television stations within and outside Ekiti State.

The broadcaster said he abandoned his black colour Mercedes Benz C-Class car marked YEE 66 AE and fled the scene to escape.

Narrating his ordeals to our correspondent, Alagbon disclosed that the incident happened at about 10.30 pm not far from Ado Local Government secretariat.

According to him, he had earlier in the day hosted a programme, ‘Isejoba rere’ on Radio Nigeria Progress 100.5 FM between 11am and 12 noon during which many listeners called in to condemn the state government’s alleged failure to pay workers’ salaries.

Alagbon said other callers slammed the government for what they called “massive hunger ravaging Ekiti without any solution in sight.”

The broadcaster also disclosed that the same scenario played out during another programme “Ekiti O Ni Baje,” on a private radio station Voice 89.9 FM, Ado-Ekiti on Saturday February 24 from 9.30 pm to 10.30 pm.

Alagbon said the public outrage on the two radio shows might have been responsible for the attacks on him.

The broadcaster said: “I am not an enemy to anybody. I am a professional broadcaster contributing my quota to Ekiti development.

“I had concluded my programme on Progress FM that fateful day and went to my office to do some editing and attend to speak people after which I headed home at close of work.

“I noticed that three men on Okada were trailing me from Ijigbo roundabout and they caught up with me along a bad portion of road near the local government secretariat in Odo Ado.

“They double crossed me as I stopped to know who they were and they started hitting my car with machetes in their hands.

“They said I am too vocal on my programmes and that I allow people to criticise Governor Ayo Fayose during the phone-in segments.

“As they moved to the back of the car to continue hitting it with machetes in their hands,  I suddenly opened the door and ran as fast as my legs could take me.

“I had to abandon the car and ran for my dear life and in the course of escaping from the scene, I lost my phones and I only recovered the lines this morning.”

Alagbon disclosed that the incident has been reported at Odo Ado Police Station along Poly Road and the Police have launched investigation into the attack.

He explained that the incident caused anxiety in his hometown, Ayegbaju-Ekiti in Oye Local Government Areas,  where he was summoned by elders of the community who were fully briefed on the incident.

When asked whether he would back down on the perceived threat to his life,  Alagbon said he remained committed to his numerous listeners and viewers.

He said: “My security is in the hands of God and he will continue to protect me. I will continue to be loyal to my listeners and viewers of my programmes as those shows give them opportunities to be heard.

“I will continue to present those programmes despite my predicament. In fact, I am preparing to host another edition of ‘Ekiti O Ni Baje’ tonight.

  • Atiku’s son escapes with son as court awards wife custody of kids

Atiku’s son escapes with son as court awards wife custody of kids

There was drama at the Tinubu Magistrate’s Court yesterday afternoon following the disappearance of Aamir Atiku, the seven-year-old son of Aminu Atiku and his ex-wife, Unmi Fatima Bolori.

The boy’s mother claimed that Aminu, son of former Vice President Abubakar Atiku, snatched Aamir and drove off with him.

The alleged incident occurred at 1:59pm, minutes after Aminu lost custody of his daughter Ameera Atiku, 9, and Aamir 7, to Bolori.

Chief Magistrate Ayeye granted Bolori full custody of the children after Aminu failed to file a response to her application for child custody.

The court ordered Aminu to pay Bolori N250, 000 monthly for the upkeep of the children, beginning from this month. It also ordered Aminu to carry out medical insurance on the children among others.

Bolori’s November 2017 application for child custody proposed a nine-point ‘statement of arrangement’ for the children.

It was argued by her counsel, Gloria Albert-Ekpe (Mrs.) and Ethel Okoh from Festus Keyamo Chambers.

The applicant prayed the court to order Aminu to pay her N300,000,00 monthly as feeding and maintenance allowance for the kids’ upkeep and N1million yearly as their clothing allowance.

Bolori also sought an order restraining Aminu from taking the kids “outside the shores of Nigeria for any purpose whatsoever” without her consent.

At the resumed hearing of the matter yesterday, neither Aminu nor his legal team was present to announce appearance.

Chief Magistrate Ayeye said: “The respondent failed to file a response. In view of the deliberate absence of the respondent and his legal team, I am constrained to make these following orders in default of respondent’s presence and in the best interest of the children to wit:

“Unmi Fatima Bolori is hereby granted full custody of Aamir Abubakar Sadiq Aminu Atiku (seven years) and Ameera Amina Atiku (nine years).

“The applicant is allowed to reside with the children at her residence at Katampe Extension, Abuja.

“The applicant is ordered to put the children in schools suited for their educational needs in Abuja.

“Access is granted to the respondent to visit his children in Abuja and request for the children to spend holidays with him.

“The respondent is ordered to pay monthly upkeep for the children in the amount ofN250, 000.00 monthly beginning January 2018.

“The Respondent is ordered to effect medical insurance on each of the children.”

When Aminu and his legal team eventually arrived at the courtroom at around 1pm, the proceedings were practically over.

The Nation observed him laughing and playing with both kids in the courtroom. At about 1:45pm, he consulted with his lawyers and walked out of the courtroom.

According to Bolori’s counsel Okoh, Aminu “snatched” his son from the mum, locked him in his car before driving off”.

Okoh said last night that Aminu had refused to hand over his son to her client. She said his mother was worried because they were due to catch a flight to her Abuja home today.

Bolori, daughter of Maiduguri businessman Alhaji Bukar Bolori, and Aminu got married in Ghana in 2007, but they separated in 2011.

On October 18, 2017, Chief Magistrate Ayeye temporarily remanded Aminu in a transit cell within the court’s premises after citing him for alleged contempt.

Atiku allegedly kept Amir from his mother, contrary to an October 11, 2017 order of the court.

  • Man escapes lynching over ‘mysterious’ deaths in Ekiti community

A resident of Ifaki Ekiti, Tope Adigun Omotayo, narrowly escaped a lynching for alleged complicity in the death of six persons, including a 34-year-old graduate, Surajudeen Olabode Fadahunsi.

Omotayo was fingered in the death of the individuals through ‘mystical’ means.

The death of Fadahunsi, a 2011 graduate of Mechanical Engineering from the Ekiti State University, provoked an angry response from residents of the community who attempted to kill Omotayo.

Fadahunsi, a jobless graduate, was said to have died twenty days after his wife was delivered of a baby.

Omotayo is now in protective custody of the state police command with investigation underway at press time.

The Nation gathered that Omotayo was sighted by vigilant youths at Fadahunsi’s graveside where he allegedly took samples of sand that residents claimed he planned to use to appease the spirit of Fadahunsi that tormented him.

Fadahunsi’s mother, Ms. Bimbo Yusuf, told reporters at her Ado Ekiti home that her son was killed with ‘fetish means’ by Omotayo.”

Yusuf claimed that the suspect allegedly confessed to using juju to take her son’s life.

She said her family knew nothing of the cause of her son’s death until “Omotayo confessed to killing him after his burial.”

Yusuf, an Information Officer with Ekiti State Local Government Service Commission, revealed that the family’s position was substantiated by the fact that Omotayo was apprehended by Ifaki youths beside her son’s tomb.

She said: “Omotayo had gone to collect sand from the deceased’s grave and cried that he needed it to ward off the ghost which he said was haunting him. My son had reportedly died a few minutes after answering a phone call on a site he was inspecting in Ibadan, Oyo State. He was to be buried almost immediately according to Islamic rites, but just before he was laid to rest, some aggrieved friends of his asked the Muslim clerics to wait and allow them perform some rituals that would make Muyiwa’s ghost haunt his killer.

“And they eventually did so. Omotayo had come to take sand from his grave and he was crying that the ghost (of Surajudeen) was slapping him. My son had been searching for job for five years now. His wife just gave birth to a child about 20 days ago. He wanted to start frozen fish business in Ibadan. I still spoke to him on Wednesday about the development before we suddenly heard of his mysterious death the following day.”

The spokesman of Ekiti Police Command, Mr Alberto Adeyemi, said Omotayo was rescued from an angry mob.

He said:  “We rescued a man (Omotayo) from a mob in Ifaki-Ekiti. He was in danger in the community and we moved in to prevent jungle justice.”
