  • FUTA student wins essay contest

    Opeoluwa Akinradewo, a 500-Level student of Quantity Surveying at the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), has clinched the first prize in a national essay competition organised by the Nigerian Institute of Quantity Surveyors.

    The essay competition was titled: “Emerging Development in the Nigerian Construction Industry: The Roles of Quantity Surveyors”.

    Akinradewo was rewarded with a plaque and certificate of excellence presented by Mr Murtala Aliyu, NIQS President during the institute’s Second Research Conference (NIQS RECon2) hosted by FUTA.

    The Vice-Chancellor, Prof Adebiyi Daramola,congratulated Akinradewo, describing him as a worthy ambassador of the university.

    Winners emerge Mike Okonkwo Essay contest

    Master Chisom Emeto of Port-Harcourt International School has emerged the overall winner of the 12th Mike Okonkwo National Essay competition.

    His script was the best among the 2,997 entries received for the annual competition.

    Emeto emerged winner “For his ability to engage the subject by showing how citizens have been culprit in entrenching bad governance and then proposes what must be done to institute a political class that will deliver good governance,” the chief examiner, Prof. Akachi Ezeigbo, said.

    Asuquo Mirabel of Redeemers International Secondary School, East-West Road, Nkpolu, Port-Harcourt, Rivers State clinched the second position while Jonathan Ikechukwu of Kings College Lagos is third.

    Awe Modupe of Chapel Secondary School Ilorin, Kwara State was fourth while Aladegbami Oluwadamilola of Hallmark Secondary School Ondo State was fifth.

    The overall winner will get N100,000, a laptop and a plaque while his school will get three internet-ready computer and a printer.

    The runner-up gets N75,000, a plaque and the school will get two internet- ready computer and a printer.

    Ikechukwu goes home with N50, 000, a plaque while his school gets an internet- ready computer.

    The fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh candidates get a consolation prize of N20,000 each.

    The winners will be presented at the Mike Okonkwo annual lecture slated for September 3 at the Shell Hall Muson Centre, Onikan, Lagos.

    The theme of the lecture is “The Nigerian political class and the citizens quest for good governance.”

  • Mike Okonkwo Essay Contest begins

    The Governing Council of the Federal Polytechnic, Bida has approved the appointment of Dr. Abubakar Abdul Dzukogi as the Acting Rector of the institution.

    The appointment followed the expiration of the tenure of the immediate past Rector, Mr Abdullahi Sule, an engineer, who served for a period of nine years from January, 2006 to March, 2015.Registrar of the institution Chief Bisi Adeyemi in a statement said Dzukogi’s appointment took effect from Monday March 23, 2015.

    Dzukogi was, until his appointment, the Deputy Rector from March, 2011. He had served the Polytechnic in various capacities, includind Head, Department of Mass Communication; Director, Academic Planning; and Director, Directorate of Continuing Education among others.

    The new acting Rector holds a Doctorate Degree in Mass Communication from Benue State University Makurdi and joined the Federal Polytechnic, Bida in 1984.

    The Nation CAMPUSLIFE, in collaboration with AfricanLiberty.org and Network for a Free Society, is calling for entries into an essay competition.

    Details are as follows:

    Question: Freedom creates prosperity. It unleashes human talent, invention and innovation, creating wealth where none existed before. Discuss.

    Eligibility: All African Students in any tertiary institutions (university, polytechnic, college of education and technical schools) in Africa. The format of the text should be in Microsoft word and not more than 1,500 words.

    Interested students can visit www.africanliberty.org for background materials. Note that plagiarism is not allowed; any text or sentences copied from other people works must be indicated in quotation marks and credit must be given at the bottom of the paper to the author. Any entry that contains plagiarised work will be disqualified.

    The Nation CAMPUSLIFE in collaboration with Blantyre newspaper, Malawi, AfricanLiberty.org and Network for a Free Society, is calling for entries into an essay competition.

    Question: Nations which are economically free out-perform non-free nations in all indicators of well-being. Discuss.

    Eligibility: All students in any tertiary institutions (university, polytechnic, college of education and vocational school) in Africa.

    The format of the text should be in MS word and not more than 1,500 words.
