    Wrestling: African champion Kolawole wins gold at Grand Prix of Spain

    Nigeria’s Esther Kolawole (62kg) has beaten HAYLIE JAFFE of USA 10-0 superiority to lift gold at Grand Prix of Spain.

    The highly spirited African champion came into the encounter with confidence after a convincing 10-0 superiority over Lydia Perez Tourino of Spain in the quarter-final and 4-1 victory against Polish Alicja Nowosad in the semi-final.

    The gold medal is a testament to Esther Kolawole’s potential and belief of what she can achieve.

    Reacting to the win, the President Nigeria Wrestling Federation, honourable Daniel Igali, on behalf of the board applauded the motivated reaction of Esther Kolawole, expressing confidence that the experience will shape her for future international events.

    Daniel Igali noted that he is satisfied with the incredible outing, saying if she continues in that trajectory, Nigerians should be hopeful of many gold medals in the future from her.

    Paris 2024 Olympian, Esther Kolawole is set to participate in this year’s Spanish Wrestling Grand Prix slated for  July 4th  to 7th .

    Afterwards, the reigning African champion will proceed to Budapest,  Hungary for the World Wrestling Ranking Series commencing  July 14th  to 19th   in preparation for the 2025 World Wrestling Championship in Croatia in September.

    Esther Kolawole will be joined by the Nigerian National Wrestling Women’s coach, Akuh Purity, in these international trips

    The Nigeria Wrestling Federation is leaving nothing to chance in efforts to expose its athletes to international competitions for optimal performance.

    The Wrestling Federation National team women’s coach, Akuh Purity expressed hope that Esther Kolawole will give a good account of herself.

    “We are heading to these tournaments to compete. However, we want to continue to expose our wrestlers by competing with their international counterparts in such tournaments,”  Aku  told  the Media Officer of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation, Promise Okotoko.”In doing so, it would help us to assess the strength and track progress of our wrestlers on how they performed at regular intervals to monitor improvement and adjust training accordingly.”

    Meanwhile, in 2024, the Spanish Grand Prix in Madrid, Esther Kolawole 62kg, and Ogunsanya Christinah 53kg recorded bronze medals for Team Nigeria respectively.
