    … Yobo out again

Super Eagles officials have again left out injury-hit skipper Joseph Yobo, while Emmanuel Emenike and Ike Uche lead the attack against Ethiopia.

MTNFootball.com gathered that Yobo has not fully recovered from an ankle injury, which he picked up in the match against Burkina Faso, and so he will miss his second straight match of the Africa Cup of Nations on Tuesday.

The vastly experienced Fenerbache defender returned to full training this week, but officials said he is not yet 100 percent fit for the crucial encounter.

Stephen Keshi will therefore stick with the central defence pairing of Godfrey Oboabona and youngster Kenneth Omeruo.

Celtic defender Efe Ambrose will regain his place at right back after he served out one-match ban for receiving a red card against Burkina Faso.

Lazio youngster Ogenyi Onazi was the makeshift right back against Zambia on Friday.

In midfield, Enugu Rangers new signing Sunday Mba will make his AFCON debut ahead of Real Betis ace Nosa Igiebor, who has struggled to impress in South Africa.

The Eagles will parade a fast and daring strike force of Emmanuel Emenike, Ikechukwu Uche and Victor Moses.

MTNFootball.com reported on Monday that Villarreal striker Uche will make his first start at this tournament on Tuesday.

It means CSKA Moscow’s Ahmed Musa will start from the bench in this clash.

AFCON: Moses, Yobo doubtful for Ethiopia tie

The Nigerian duo of Victor Moses and Joseph Yobo could be left out of their African Nations Cup Group C clash with Ethiopia in Rustenburg on Tuesday.

Moses, 22, made his debut at the AFCON against Zambia but showed signs of still struggling with his hamstring, Supersport.com reports.

The Chelsea attacking winger played for 78 minutes in the game against Zambia before he was substituted for Brown Ideye and is yet to recover from the injury, according to head coach, Stephen Keshi.

Captain of the Super Eagles, Yobo is also a huge doubt owing to an ankle injury after missing the 1-1 draw with Zambia in Nelspruit on Friday.

“Victor Moses is still under observation. He’s been training but not at 100 percent right now. Same goes for Joseph Yobo who missed the last game,” said Keshi.

But the Nigerian manager is not ruling out both players from the crucial game against Ethiopia.

“They still have a good chance of making the squad for the game as they have been training with the team. But if they are not healthy enough we will seek other options,” he added.

Supersport.com was also informed that Warri Wolves’ defender, Azubuike Egwuekwe, has recovered from illness that has kept him out of the Nigerian squad.

AFCON: Keshi sets sights on Ethiopia

Super Eagles Coach, Stephen Keshi, has said the team will now focus on the final Group C tie against Ethiopia on Tuesday.

Nigeria and Zambia battled to a 1-1 draw on Friday.

The Nigerians again could not defend their lead as they allowed defending champions to fight back and cancel out Emmanuel Emenike’s 57th minute opener on Friday.

The two teams have recorded two points apiece in as many matches, while Burkina Faso which trashed Ethiopia 4-0 in Friday’s second match leads with four points.

Ethiopia has only one point from the same number of matches.

“We wanted the three points on Friday with due respect to Zambia, they are a great team and have been together for the past four years and also they are the defending champions.

“All the same, I’m happy with the result.

“We just have to get ahead and forge ahead against a very good Ethiopia team,” MTNFootball.com quoted Keshi as saying on the team’s last match slated for next Tuesday.

  • Keshi eyes Ethiopia with caution

    Keshi eyes Ethiopia with caution

Nigeria head coach, Stephen Keshi has refused to wave off the threat of Ethiopia at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa.

The Ethiopians with 10 men forced African champions, Zambia to a stunning 1-1 in Group C’s opening game on Monday and Keshi believes that it will be wrong to brand Sewnet Bishaw’s men as a “weak” team.

He stated that the Walyans of Ethiopia showed why they qualified for the Afcon this year with their performance against Zambia’s Chipolopolo.

The former Mali and Togo manager also made it clear that Monday’s results in Group C underscore that his team are up against strong opponents.

“There are no weak teams here, and Ethiopia showed that they deserve to be at the competition. The group is a strong one,” said Keshi.

However, Keshi is mindful of the pressure of progressing to the last eight after Monday’s results and is focused on the game against Zambia.

“The next game against Zambia is very important. We will put behind us the Burkina Faso game,” said the Nigerian coach.

Nigeria’s Super Eagles were held to 1-1 draw by the Stallions of Burkina Faso in Nelspruit on Monday.

The Nigerians will go up against their Zambian counterparts this Friday.

    10-MAN ETHIOPIA HOLD ZAMBIA

ZAMBIA opened the defence of their African Nations Cup title with a disappointing 1-1 draw in an eventful Group C clash with ten-man Ethiopia at the Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit.

Ethiopia’s Saladin Said saw his weak penalty saved in the 23rd minute and Sewnet Bishaw’s team went a man down just after the half-hour mark when goalkeeper Jemal Tassew charged out of his area and made a high challenge on Chisamba Lungu.

Zambia made their numerical superiority count in first-half injury time through Collins Mbesuma, but Adane Girma equalised on 64 minutes, much to the delight of the thousands of noisy Ethiopia fans inside the ground.

The game got off to a lively start with Zambia defender Stophira Sunzu firing over from long range with just 72 seconds on the clock, but it was Ethiopia who should have taken the lead on 16 minutes. Girma’s hopeful long ball was misjudged by defenders Sunzu and Hijani Himoonde and deflected into the path of Saladin, who perfectly lobbed the onrushing goalkeeper Kennedy Mweene only to see the ball take an amazing bounce off the rock-hard pitch and over the bar.

However, Saladin only had himself to blame for not scoring seven minutes later, seeing Mweene dive to his left and comfortably save his weak penalty after he had been brought down by Lungu. Ethiopia were made to pay for that miss on 32 minutes when Chansa’s pass set Lungu clear and, after lobbing the ball wide, he was scythed down by Tassew, whose right boot caught Lungu painfully in the midriff.

Tassew stayed down and received lengthy treatment, but the referee decision wasn’t swayed and the red card was shown as Tassew was carried off on a stretcher.

Nothing came from the resulting free-kick, but Zambia eventually took the lead in injury time as Isaac Chansa’s clever header found Mbesuma in between two defenders and he found the bottom corner from 12 yards.Chansa and several team-mates celebrated with a well-rehearsed routine near the corner flag.

Zambia were unable to find a second goal to kill the game off in the second half and Ethiopia got back on level terms on 64 minutes when Saladin found Girma inside the area and he fired home off the near post.

Five minutes later, Mbesuma was unlucky to be booked for a dive in the area when Aynalem Hailu looked to be pulling his shirt, and despite pushing forward in search of the winner, Zambia were unable to claim all three points.

  • Ethiopia holds Zambia in group C opener

Ethiopia came from a goal down to force the defending champions Zambia to a 1-1 draw at the Mbombela stadium on Monday, futaa.com reports.

Goals from Zambia’s Collins Mbesuma in the first half and a second half equalizer from Ethiopia’s Adane Gima made sure both sides shared points in the keenly contested encounter.

Zambia came off a sloppy start to take a 1-0 half time lead against a 10- man Ethiopian team in the Group ‘C’ opener that kicked off at 1800hrs from the Mbombela Stadium.

Substitute Addis Hintsa played a penetrative ball forward to find Saladin Seid on the edge of the box.

He controlled the ball and pushed it into the area for the onrushing Girma, who shot past Zambian Kenneth Mweene at the near post.

  • Photo Africa for Ethiopia

    Photo Africa for Ethiopia

The Photo Africa segment of the annual sixth Life In My City Art Festival will feature in Addis Photo Festival holding in December in Ethiopia, according to the festival’s artistic director, Mr Ayo Adewumi.

He said organisers of the Addis Photo Festival have sent a proposal to Photo Africa indicating their interest in featuring 30 of its shortlisted works at the festival.

The Photo Africa competition, muted three years ago, was approved by the festival board and over 70 entries were received from across the continent. Out of these, 30 were shortlisted for the exhibition that opened on Thursday at the National Gallery of Art, Enugu.

Chairman, board of the festival and former chairman, Union Bank Plc, Elder Kalu Uke Kalu said the success recorded this year in spite of the limited time for preparation is an indication that the organisers would do better in future given enough time. “I am delighted that we were able to pull this show through within the short time of preparation. It means that next year, we will do better with time on our side,” he said.

Head of the jurors, renowned photographer and journalist, Mr. Tam Fiofori observed that for a long time, photography has not been given its rightful place among the genres of visual art, saying it has always been seen as a poor cousin to visual art. He however said that it is gladdening that with this competition modern Nigerian artists would begin to appreciate photography more as one of the oldest genres of visual art. He recalled that recently, the late Bonny Island-born Jonathan Adagogo Green, who photographed the late Oba Ovonmramwen of Benin City during the 1897 British punitive expedition, was discovered to be among the pioneer visual artists of modern Nigeria.

On the entries for the competition, Fiofori said: “I am impressed by the quality of entries for the competition. Again, I am also delighted to find female photographers in the competition, because like painting and sculpting, female artists are less represented.

Curator of National Gallery, Enugu, Mr. James Irabor said the gallery is proud to partner with the festival organsers in bringing back the lost glory of Enugu. He described the Photo Africa and the festival as a whole as a wake-up call on the artists and the city of Enugu.

Director, Alliance Francaise, Enugu, Mr. Dominique Fancelli said the success of Photo Africa despite the short time of preparation is as a result of the effective network platform provided by the social media as well as the various stations of Alliance Francaise in Nigeria and across the continent.

Chairman, Enugu Council for Arts and Culture, Mr. Obiora Anidi said the festival is coming at an auspicious time when the art must be repositioned in the state. According to him, most secondary schools in the state do not offer fine art and consequently affects intake of students into tertiary institutions to study fine art.

“This is why the festival held series of workshops for art teachers in primary and secondary schools to chart a new road map for the repositioning of the arts for social engineering,” he said.

Anidi lamented that there has never been an enabling environment for the art to blossom, adding that every artist does almost everything to promote his art from conception to production and marketing. “Unlike other societies, in Nigeria, there are no grants for the artists, no residencies, no steady connoisseurs, no gallery with defined goal, no professional art marketers among others,” he noted.
