Etisalat supports SMEs at 2nd Nigeria Leadership Summit

Etisalat said it is commited to the development of the Nigerian youth through empowerment and identifying with their goals and passion. The company stated this at the just concluded 2013 Nigeria Leadership Summit, which held in Lagos.

The three-day summit, organised by Anabel Leadership Academy, in conjunction with Etisalat Nigeria, started on December 9, with a two day conference tagged “Let’s get to work”, put together for the youth and entrepreneurs. The summit ended with a grand finale that was attended by prominent Nigerians, including Chief Emeka Anyaoku, former Commonwealth Secretary General and renowned diplomat, who led the launch of the ‘Empower Nigeria Initiative’ and ‘One Million Jobs for the Nigeria Project.’

Speaking on the ‘Empower Nigeria Initiative,’ Head, Business Segment, Etisalat Nigeria, Bidemi Ladipo, said that Etisalat has always supported youth entrepreneurship programs across the country, citing examples of the annual Market Access and EasyBusiness Millionaire Hunt, a scheme designed to provide grants of up to N20 million in support of SMEs, as some of the ways Etisalat supports entrepreneurship development.

“In support of the Empower Nigeria Initiative, Etisalat is giving out free EasyBusiness lines to all registered members of the Empower Nigeria Initiative.

The Etisalat SIM cards will be given to every small business owner irrespective of the number of staff they have. With these lines, members of the initiative can communicate via phone at no cost; calls made to anyone within the network will be charged at no cost. We are also giving out N2 million each to the top 10 best business ideas to support them in their chosen line of business,” he disclosed.

Mrs. Chima, a business owner and one of the motivated participants mentioned that her determination had been renewed by this gesture. “I must say that this is one of the best news I have heard today. Most times we are afraid to go seeking for loans from commercial banks because of the high interest rates out there. What Etisalat has done by giving us the opportunity to win N2 million is very remarkable,” she said.

“At Etisalat, we have been relentless in supporting initiatives that go a long way in assisting young people to achieve their dreams as regards successfully setting up businesses. Some of the initiatives we have used to help develop businesses include Market Access which is in partnership with SMEDAN, our Etisalat Easybusiness package which helps SMEs to communicate at a reduced cost and our recently launched promo called Easybusiness millionaire hunt which gives an opportunity for people with great business ideas to win as much as N2 million. • N100M LAWSUIT: Julius Agwu goes tough on Etisalat

N100M LAWSUIT: Julius Agwu goes tough on Etisalat

JOKES apart, rib cracker Julius ‘D Genius’ Agwu seems to be taking his issue with Etisalat telecommunication to a higher level. There had been several rounds of applause since comedian Julius Agwu through his solicitor and lawyer, Festus Keyamo, sued a service provider, Etisalat, for allegedly blocking his line without his consent.

Julius Agwu, through Keyamo, is asking for a whopping N100, 000, 000 damages. Julius Agwu said that the line was already registered and that despite promises by Etisalat to rectify the fault and taking pains to meet with them, his line is yet to be unblocked.

According to the humourist, the telecoms brand granted a third party access into his mobile line and illegally transferred his credit in the process. The unidentified individual also gained access into his credit card account. Julius states that the incident happened when he travelled to the USA to see his family.

“While I was in America to see my new baby, I suddenly realised that my Etisalat line was inactive. I couldn’t receive and make calls. I went to Etisalat office in Hilton to complain and to discover what the problem was. I was told someone asked the company to swap my line. I got very worried immediately and queried them.

“How could someone’s line get swapped without the authorisation of the owner? Even as the owner of the line, I would issue an authorisation letter to effect that. I was worried because I personally registered the line and I told them I wanted to know the staff that granted the request but they refused. It was, however, rectified that very day by one Miss Joan and I was able to make use of the line again momentarily, for that day only. I later made several calls to the customer care and till now nothing has been done.

“Due to their negligence, I have lost few jobs because that is the only line some clients could reach me on. Another painful aspect of it all is that the person broke into my credit card account and it was used in Rome and Milan. And as a matter of fact, I didn’t go to those places. I have to block the card because I have lost money.

“The credit on the line was also transferred to the new line by the person who swapped it. There is a high level of impunity in this country and nobody cares. I’m crying out so that people can know how shameless and useless some brands can be. I will take this matter to the Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC) and National Human Rights Commission. I should be fully compensated because even till now, the problem has not been rectified.”

For instance, no other network has a forum like this where they interface closely with customers to listen to what we like and what needs to improve,” he pointed out.
