  • NATCOMS canvasses alternative means to SIM card re-registration

NATCOMS canvasses alternative means to SIM card re-registration

The National Association of Telecommunications Subscribers (NATCOMS) on Wednesday called for an alternative means for telecoms consumers to re-register their Subscribers’ Identification Module (SIM) cards.

The President of NATCOMS, Chief Deolu Ogunbanjo, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that operators should provide an easier means for customers affected by the SIM card re-registration to be able to re-register, instead of going to the service providers’ offices.

Ogunbanjo said that a perfect alternative was for the network providers to allow those affected to send the required data through Short Messaging Service (SMS).

He said that such an alternative means would ensure that telecoms subscribers were not subjected to any stress for an exercise they had undertaken previously.

”SIM registration is very good, but there should be some deliberate initiative to ensure that the subscribers are not subjected to any further stress.

”All of us have registered before, but there might be one or two details that the operators need.

”A particular network provider could send SMS to you that it required more details on your data and once you attend to them through an SMS that you send to the network, it should just be okay.

”They should engage other means of capturing subscribers’ additional data,” the NATCOMS President said.

He said that the problem with the SIM card registration procedures should be blamed on the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and the agents it commissioned to carry out the exercise.

Ogunbanjo recalled that the regulatory body licensed seven agents to cover the six geopolitical zones of the country, but that the agents did not carry out the exercise properly.

He said that due to set targets and deadlines given, the registration agents were not asking the complete questions required from SIM card users.

The advocacy group president, therefore, encouraged the operators to continue to compensate subscribers affected by the exercise.

According to him, the airtime compensation given to the consumers should not be with any conditionality in respect of days for usage.

NAN recalls that in August 2015, MTN, Airtel, Globacom and Etisalat were sanctioned for noncompliance with the directive to deactivate improperly registered SIM cards.

MTN was fined N102.2 million, Globacom N7.4 million, Etisalat N7 million and Airtel N3.8 million for the violation. Others complied and paid, while MTN flouted the fine.

On Oct. 20, 2015, NCC conveyed appropriate sanctions to MTN, in accordance with Regulation 20(1) of the Telephone Subscribers Registration Regulation 2011, to pay the sum of N200, 000 only for each of the 5.2 million improperly registered SIM cards in its network.

MTN Nigeria was, therefore, fined $5.1 billion (about N1.04 trillion), but it was later reduced by 25 per cent to N780 billion, and the deadline for payment extended from Nov. 16 to Dec. 31.

However, on Dec. 17, 2015, MTN took the regulatory body to court over the sanction.

How Etisalat is building community innovators

Recently, Nigeria’s innovative telecommunications company, Etisalat, rewarded two young Nigerians, Obi Brown and Chijioke Ezegbo, for their innovative product and idea geared at making invaluable impacts on individuals and organisations using mobile broadband technology.

Mr. Brown’s winning product in the Most Innovative Product Category, Study Math Lab, is a repository of over 1300+ videos solving math problems in over 49 topics in the NERDC curriculum for senior secondary school Math. The videos are solved by a team of Math teachers led by WAEC Chief Examiner.

For Chijioke, winner in the Most Innovative Idea category, his Dedicated Traffic Mapping Device (DTMD) winning idea is a GPRS enabled traffic navigation device with voice over  interface  which is affixed to a vehicle windshield (just like a rear view mirror) to help users navigate their way through traffic by accessing real-time traffic data and suggesting shorter or alternate routes.

Etisalat, in celebrating these innovative Nigerians, had presented them with a seven million naira cash reward in the ratio 5:2, a publicity campaign and mentoring session at the EDC of Pan Atlantic University.

The celebration of the young men was not another bolt from the blue, but rather a stark reflection of the company’s belief in and support for innovation. Matthew Willsher, Chief Executive Officer of Etisalat Nigeria, while speaking recently threw more light on this.

“We believe as an innovative company that we should support innovation and entrepreneurs throughout the country, and so what we do is organise the prize to encourage people to apply. We also provide prize money that people could invest in their innovative products and ideas to make them a reality as well as a mentorship to follow through and help people actually deliver on their innovations. The world is driven by innovation and Nigeria needs innovators whose ideas and products can drive development and help people live as they should. So we are pleased to provide a platform to mobilise the nation’s teeming crop of young and undiscovered innovators to impact all areas of the society,” he said.

Echoing similar sentiments, Funke Opeke, the accomplished CEO of MainOne and Member, Board of Innovators underscored the place of innovation in the nation’s drive for economic growth in a fast changing world environment.

According to her, “Change is a process that is indeed a journey of creation. It comes about by each of us seeking to innovate to bring new perspectives in terms of the challenges that face us a people and as a nation. Etisalat can look back into the last seven years of operations in Nigeria and see the amount of innovations it has brought to telecommunications services in Nigeria.”

Matthew Willsher, while offering insight on this revealed that innovation is at the core of the business functions of the company.

His words, “Innovation is at the core of our operations at Etisalat.  It is the strength on which we thrive. We are an innovative company with core functions in telecommunications where we have shown serious interest in our customers who always want to improve their lives, improve their businesses, who always look for new opportunities. As a company, we are very delighted to partner and come up with innovations and bring them to our customers, but we still have a responsibility to the larger host community.”

    Etisalat seeks $2b bank loans

United Arab Emirate (UAE)-based telecoms operator, Etisalat is talking to banks about raising a $2 billion loan as the telecommunications firm seeks funding amid a shift in Gulf loan markets.

It  joins a flurry of regional companies seeking to secure funding before a likely rise in United States (U.S.) interest rates pushes up borrowing rates, while the availability of loan finance is also being impacted by a liquidity squeeze within Gulf banks.

Sources aware of the matter told Reuters that Etisalat is keen to close the loan, which will be structured as a revolving credit facility, in the first quarter of next year.

One of the sources, at an international bank, said the loan would be classified as a stand-by facility, meaning Etisalat could ask for lower pricing as further fees would be levied if the cash is utilised.

Nobody was immediately available to comment from Etisalat.

Companies in the UAE have enjoyed several years of cheap funding as banks built up huge capital cushions as a result of strong oil prices.

But the weakening in oil markets since last year has raised fears of a liquidity squeeze, compounded by expectations that governments in the region will follow an expected move by the U.S. Federal Reserve by raising interest rates in coming months.

The majority government-owned firm provides services to 169 million subscribers in 18 countries across the Middle East, Asia and Africa, according to Etisalat’s website. In September it allowed foreign and institutional investors to own its shares.

Sean Tizzle excites students at Etisalat Career Counselling Day

It was a wonderful time for the hundreds of students who attended the recently held 14th session Career Counselling Day, hosted by Etisalat Nigeria, as they were treated to live thrilling performances by Nigerian-born afro-pop act, Morihanfen Oluwaseun Oluwabamidele, aka Sean Tizzle.

The Sho lee crooner, clad in white top and black jean pant, was an instant hit with the students who could not hide their excitement at coming face-to-face with him and sought to touch him. They demonstrated this by singing along as he performed several songs from his works including his debut single Sho Lee which has enjoyed massive play time on radio and TV since it was released in 2013.

Sean Tizzle’s soaring popularity appears to have broken the age barrier and now resonates with the elderly as some of those in attendance at the event also joined the students in the excitement.

It was not however, all about singing and dancing, as Sean Tizzle took out time to task the students on reaching the utmost height of their potentials. He enjoined them to strive to recognise their strengths and work hard at maximizing such.

In a related development, Etisalat has reiterated its commitment to national development using sustainable CSR platforms such as health, environment and education which he described as very key.

The company’s Vice President, Regulatory and Corporate Affairs Etisalat Nigeria, Ibrahim Dikko, gave this assurance while speaking at the event. In his words, “Education is the source, the spring of growth and development. When education is gotten right, every other aspect of life benefits, including health, the economy and our planet. We are committed to Corporate Social Responsibility agenda and we will apply ourselves to driving the sustainable development of our nation, Nigeria.”

The Career Counselling Day was hosted by Etisalat in partnership with the Lagos Empowerment And Resource Network (LEARN)  and it is designed to guide students of secondary schools in the junior and senior levels towards making sound, positive and fulfilling career decisions which will provide long-term benefits to them, their families, organisations, and ultimately the nation.

  • Etisalat discovers new talents behind the lens

Etisalat discovers new talents behind the lens

It was a celebration of top photography talents. Launched in 2010, the Lagos Photo Festival has become a yearly international photography event that seeks to establish a community for contemporary photography, while uniting local and international artists through images that capture individual experiences and identities across the continent.

For Azu Nwagbogu, the Director, Lagos Photo Foundation, organisers of the festival, the photo feast is more than just a fiesta. “It captures the African story from Africans’ perspective. It enables us to understand why we have to take ownership of our own image and our own story or narratives. In the past, the narratives that were made about Africa or our country were given to us by outsiders. At Lagos Photo, we strive to take ownership of, and  communicate this internationally because the world is shrinking around us. So, it is very important for us to join the digital revolution and begin to communicate the more impactful vision for the country, the continent and for humanity as a whole.”

With the theme: “Designing Futures”, this year’s edition fielded images by 35 renowned artists from Egypt, France, South Africa, Italy, Ivory Coast, United Kingdom (UK), India, The Netherlands, Spain, Belgium, Morocco, DRC, Ghana, Germany, New Zealand, United States (US), Switzerland, Guinea and Nigeria. The month-long event also featured exhibitions, workshops, artist presentations, discussions, screening, and large scale outdoor installations in congested public spaces in Lagos. This year’s theme and conversation of interest explored dialogues surrounding contemporary design in Africa.

Although the festival has since ended, many will not forget its servings in a hurry.  One of the highlights of this year’s photo fiesta was the Etisalat Photo Competition, an initiative sponsored by Etisalat, Nigeria, which was aimed at empowering budding photographers by giving them a platform for positive engagement through social media and technology. The submission of entries started from July 6 to September 28, through the official LagosPhoto App after which the three winners emerged from votes through the same app.

According to the Curator, African Artists Foundation (AAF), Cristina De Middel the competition offers a platform for Nigerians to “tell compelling narratives about Africa and Africans through images that are inspired by their creativity”.

And Kelvin Abidemi Oladiran, a budding photography talent, is one of many talents discovered during the fiesta telling Nigeria’s fashion narrative through his lens.

Oladiran’s winning entry emerged winner of the 2015 Etisalat Photo Competition in the “Fashion” category.

With the theme: I love 9ja, the competition was divided into four categories: fashion, places, people and food. There was no winning photograph in the food category.

Besides choosing the winning entry in each category, the organisers also adjudged the best in the three with Oladiran emerging the overall winner, a prize that comes with a Canon Camera EOS 550D. Adeboye Thomas, whose entry won in the “People” category, was the first runner-up and an iPad Mini Three, while Ima Mfon’s, who won the “Places” category, earned him the prize of the second runner-up and a Nokia Lumia 930 for his effort.

Having bagged the first place prize, Oladiran said, he is still basking in its euphoria of the month-long feast. Besides, shooting him to limelight, he said, wining has also boosted his passion for photography. “This is very inspiring and encouraging to get rewarded doing what you love to do. I really appreciate Etisalat for this platform they have created for Nigerian youth,” he said.

At the presentation of prizes, Head, Events and Sponsorship, Etisalat Nigeria, Modupe Thani, said the competition was in line with the company’s vision of encouraging creativity and innovation through the creation of, and support for credible platforms for youths.

“Etisalat is passionate about innovation and creativity. We have also been in the forefront of promoting excellence, nurturing talent and providing platforms for people to express themselves and communicate their ideas. It is in this light that we have organised the Etisalat Photo Competition and also sponsored the festival right from inception about five years ago.”

The festival, which opened to the public on October 24 at Eko Hotel & Suites, Victoria Island, also featured other satellite exhibition venues of Lagos arts and cultural spaces from Omenka Gallery to Africans Artists’ Foundation. It also featured at the Stranger Lagos; Goethe-Institute; Nimbus Gallery; Alara Concept Store; A White Space Gallery Yaba Tech, and Quintessence. Outdoor exhibitions in public spaces included Muri Okunola Park, Falomo Roundabout (Ikoyi), Awojobi Park (Onike), and Freedom Park.

The participating photographers included: Owise Abuzaid (Egypt); François Beaurain (France); Andile Buka (South Africa); Marco Casino (Italy); Joana Choumali (Ivory Coast); Omar Victor Diop & Antoine Tempé (Senegal & France/USA); Daniel Donnelly (UK); Kadara Enyeasi (Nigeria); Ima Mfon (Nigeria); Delphine Gatinois (France); Robin Hammond (New Zealand) and Navin Kala (India), among others.

This is why we created the Etisalat Prize for Literature, the first ever pan-African prize aimed at recognising and celebrating writers and other members of the literary community across Africa. We also inspire creativity and innovation with the Etisalat Prize for Innovat.” …

  • Number portability infractions: Glo, MTN, Etisalat under enforcement action

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has said MTN, Glo and Etisalat are under “enforcement action” over their failure to adhere to Mobile Number Portability (MNP) Business Rules.

NCC said to address the increasing cases of port request rejections, it resolved to monitor and sanction violations regarding MNP process time obligations. “Consequent upon the  above,  series of compliance checks were carried out regarding timer violations by donor  operators with respect to ‘validation and deactivation responses’ which have timelines of  two hours and one hour respectively.

On improper port-in transaction by Emerging Market Telecommunications Services Limited, NCC’s surveillance and intelligence gathering exercise revealed an improper port in transaction by Etisalat on September, 1st and 3rd this year.

Etisalat Limited had initiated  the  porting  of  296  lines  belonging  to  Etranzact  on  1st  September,  2015.    However, Etransact International Plc confirmed that it did not authorise the port out of any of its number currently with various other network operators.  Etisalat has been directed to repatriate the lines back to the legitimate operator while the case is currently receiving enforcement attention.
