    President felicitates Etsu Nupe on 73 birthday

    President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated the Etsu Nupe and Chairman of the Niger State Council of Traditional Rulers, Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar, on the occasion of his 73rd birthday and 22nd anniversary on the throne.

    In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, yesterday, the President commended the first-class monarch for his patriotic service to the nation and his role in strengthening Nigeria’s traditional institutions.

    Alhaji Abubakar, who retired as a Brigadier-General before ascending the throne as the 13th Etsu Nupe in 2003, was described by the President as a unifying figure whose reign has been marked by peace and reconciliation.

    “Etsu Nupe has contributed immensely to nation-building. He has used his revered position to promote unity, harmony, religious tolerance, peace and reconciliation in the country,” President Tinubu said.

    The President further noted the monarch’s humility, courage and leadership qualities, which he has deployed in his roles as Chairman of the Abuja Mosque and Chairman of the Coordinating Committee of the National Council of Traditional Rulers of Nigeria.

    President Tinubu prayed for long life, greater wisdom, and a peaceful and prosperous reign for the Etsu Nupe, adding that his leadership continues to serve as a beacon for harmony in the country.

    Etsu Nupe urges Muslims to move closer to God

    Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar, the Etsu Nupe and Chairman, Niger  Council of Traditional Rulers, has called on Muslims in the country to move closer to God.

    Etsu Nupe, who spoke in Bida yesterday at the closing of 2025 (1446AH) Ramadan Tafsir in Usman Zaki Central Mosque, said that solutions to Nigerians’ challenges lie in fervent prayers.

    He said that there was nothing that could not be solved through prayers and utmost piety.

    Abubakar said that the Ramadan period was a  time for the Almighty Allah to accept all prayers, and provide divine solutions to the myriad of problems facing the country.

    The traditional ruler said it was only with the fear of Allah that Muslims could meet their needs and enjoy their possessions on earth.

    The Etsu Nupe also urged Muslims to sustain the noble lessons learned during the Holy Month of Ramadan.

    “We should always remember and value God in whatever we do at all times.

    ‘This, we should sustain beyond the current Ramadan period as moving closer to God always is the key to solving Nigeria’s formidable challenges,”he said.

    Abubakar admonished the Muslim Ummah in the country to sustain the virtues learnt during the ongoing Ramadan fast even after the passage of the month.

    “We must maintain our God-fearing acts which we exhibited during the fasting period.

    “Muslims should strive to maintain all their good deeds during the fasting period and shun all the evils and devilish acts they have abstained from during the holy month,” he said.

    According to him, “these noble virtues include patience, piety, philanthropy and love for one another.

    They also include abstaining from adultery, cheating, stealing, alcoholism, devilish acts and drug abuse

    “Fasting is not only for abstaining from drinking and eating but also a time to emulate what Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was sent by Almighty Allah to come and do, as well as preach,“he said.

    He appealed to well-to-do Muslims to assist the less privileged with food items and other basic needs.

    The traditional ruler urged the faithful to use the remaining few days of fasting period to pray fervently for national peace and progress.

    The Etsu Nupe further enjoined Muslims to tolerate one another and pray for sustained unity of the country.

    He said that the two major religions in the country preach  peace, unity and love for one another, saying we should always strive to maintain these at all times.

    In a statement issued on Wednesday, September 11, by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu commended the monarch’s contributions to traditional leadership and community development, particularly in supporting education and development initiatives, facilitating healthcare projects, and promoting peaceful coexistence among ethnic groups.

    The president also noted the Etsu Nupe’s commitment to interfaith harmony and understanding, urging him to continue fostering national unity and development.

    As the monarch celebrates his birthday and anniversary, President Tinubu wishes him good health and happiness, recognizing his steadfastness and dedication to the Nupe Kingdom and Nigeria as a whole.

    Etsu Nupe urges govt to invest in healthcare to reduce medical tourism

    The chairman of the Niger State Traditional Rulers, the Etsu Nupe, Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar, has stressed the need for increased investment in the health sector to improve it and reduce the number of Nigerians seeking medical treatment abroad.

    He pointed out that the inadequacy of the nation’s health systems is a significant factor leading to medical tourism. Many hospitals in the country are not adequately equipped to meet global standards.

    Speaking at the official commissioning of the Primary Health Care Centre built and equipped by Sunti Sugar Company for Kanzhi Community in the Mokwa local government area of Niger state, the Traditional Ruler also highlighted that the country’s medical brain drain is a consequence of underfunding and substandard health systems.

    He emphasised that the solution lies in increased funding from federal and state governments for the health sector.

    Abubakar who was represented by the Galadima Rabba, Alhaji Mohamned Gimba Abubakar commended the Sunti Sugar Company over its interventions in the area as part of its social responsibilities calling on other companies and wealthy individuals to emulate them.

    He said: “The era of leaving everything for government and Companies is long gone. You are also expected to put in your self-help projects as well for the development of the community.

    “Sunti Sugar has been involved in the opening and maintenance of roads, construction of schools, and provision of portable water not only to the community but to the state in the past years and I call on you all to give the Company maximum cooperation to bring more development to the area and enhance peaceful coexistence among the people.”

    The general manager of the company, Anlo Du Pisani said the project was earmarked as part of its social responsibilities adding that it would meet the health needs of the people within the area.

    “We conducted an independent needs assessment of our host community and identified priority thematic areas for development and investment and using the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals as a reference, we resolved to support the communities in building a school, rehabilitation of roads, water and with the latest on the building of a Health Care Centre,” he remarked.

    Etsu Nupe urges unity among Muslims

    The Etsu Nupe, Dr Yahaya Abubakar, has stressed the need for the Muslims to remain united for the progress and development of Islam.

    The Etsu Nupe told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the Muslim Ummah must remain unshakably committed to the oneness of Allah and unity of purpose.

    The Chairman, Niger State Council of Traditional Rulers spoke to NAN  on the sidelines of Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI) Central Council meeting, an umbrella organisation of all Muslim groups, on Tuesday in Minna.

    According to Alhaji Abubakar, without unity the Muslim Ummah will continue to live in disarray, while development will continue to elude them.

    The royal father said there was the need for Muslims to unite for the course of Islam.

    The Etsu Nupe further stated that there was also the need for the Muslim Ummah to continue to be their brothers keepers, saying that this could not be more crucial than now when the citizens were facing a lot of socio-economic challenges.

    Etsu Nupe, who is also the JNI Vice President-General, noted that, “I have a very good course to be happy and also to celebrate the visible tendency of the Islamic brotherhood present in this meeting and equally of others who intend to be here but couldn’t due to some reasons”.

    The traditional ruler, however, commended Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, the Sultan of Sokoto and President General, JNI, for his diligent and pious leadership.

    According to the Etsu Nupe, the Sultan has remained a leader worth of emulation by all, because his preoccupation is to ensure the progress and development of the followers.

    The traditional ruler also commended Governor Umar Bago for accepting to host the Central Council meeting in the state.

    Etsu Nupe marks birthday ahead 20th ascension anniversary weekend

    The Etsu of Nupe, His Royal Highness, Alh. Dr. Yahaya Abubakar (CFR) marked his birthday on Tuesday amidst tons of congratulatory messages from family, friends, partners and colleagues across the world.

    Top among foreign dignitaries who have felicitated with him is popular musician and renowned hit maker, Wyclef Jean, who described the Royal Father as a reservoir of wisdom and embodiment of humility while playing birthday song.

    His birthday comes days to the 20th anniversary of his coronation as the 13th Etsu Nupe and the chairman Niger State Council of Traditional Rulers.

    Scheduled to come up on Saturday, September 16, 2023, the royal event will take place under the distinguished chairmanship of former military President, Gen. Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida Rtd (GCFR).

    Also expected as Special Guest of Honour is Niger Governor Mohammed Umar Bago.

    Royal Father of the day is His Eminence Alh. Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III (CFR) The Sultan of Sokoto and Chairman National Council of Traditional Rulers of Nigeria.

    It is expected to be a heavy gathering of royalties within and outside Nigeria.

    The celebrant has received commendations in the past two decades he has been on throne for his demonstration of sense of justice and fairness in leading the Nupe community, one of the largest ethnic communities in the northern Nigeria.

  • Victims of Niger market fire get relief materials

    The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has distributed relief materials worth millions of naira to about 862 victims of Minna and Bida market fire disasters.

    The Bida and Minna fire disasters occurred in February 2018 and January 2019 where traders lost millions to the fire incidents.

    The relief materials distributed include roofing sheets, cements, ceiling boards and nails.

    The flag off distribution for Bida market fire was done in Bida local government area while the relief materials for Minna market fire were distributed to the victims at the Abdulkadir Kure ultra- modern market Minna.

    The NEMA Head of Operation in Charge of Niger and Kwara, Mrs. Lydia Wagami, said the federal government was concerned on the effect of the fire to the government the people which is the reason for the relief materials.

    “The relief materials show the Federal government is concerned about the plight of the shop owners who lost their goods, hence government provides relief materials to cushion the effects of the disaster,” she said.

    The Etsu Nupe, Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar, Etsu Nupe, who received the relief materials on behalf of the victims for distribution, commended the gesture and called on government to support the victims with cash as capital for their businesses.

    He added that the government has planned to reconstruct the market to make it more befitting for business activities to strive.

    The victims whose shops were burnt down in the Minna Market during the distribution appreciated the federal government for the gesture.

    They said it will go a long way to help them in getting their business up.

    One of the most affected victims, Mr. Chima Sylva, thanked the federal government for the relief materials and said that the gesture will assist him to roof his shops that were burnt.

    Malam Mustapha Mohammed commended the Federal government and said that the intervention would cushion the effects of the disaster.

  • Etsu Nupe for world leaders forum in New York, Canada

    THE Commonwealth Business Women Network Nigeria, led by Mrs. Afoma Clara Adigwe, has confirmed the Etsu Nupe, chairman, Niger State Council of  Traditional Rulers, and  chairman Coordinating Committee of National Council of Traditional Rulers of Nigeria, Dr Yahaya Abubakarh, as the guest speaker at the Commonwealth Africa Forum.

    The forum will hold in New York and Canada on October 9 and 12 with the theme Africa Open for Business.

    According to information, the monarch will also be honoured with an award of excellence for his outstanding contributions towards Agriculture and Food Security in Africa from the Commonwealth Africa Initiative (CAI).

    The monarch will discuss the mutually-reinforcing linkages between sustaining peace and prosperity in Africa and the 2030 agenda at the Africa Forum in New York, which is aimed at bringing together Africa and North American business leaders representing multi-nationals, large corporations, SMEs, confederations, and multilateral and regional institutions. The session will also have a question and answer segment and a high level one-hour panel on September 28 in New York.

    The Africa Forum is organised by The Commonwealth Africa Initiative, a Pan Commonwealth Organisation based in London.
