Ex-Eagles player, Etuhu arrested in Sweden

Former Super Eagles midfielder Dickson Etuhu was arrested after allegedly being involved in a scuffle with security guards and police in Sweden on Sunday night, according to the UK Mirror.

The 33-year-old, who has previously played for Manchester City, Sunderland, Fulham and Blackburn, is now plying his trade for Stockholm-based side AIK.

However, the midfielder has landed himself in hot water after the incident outside a nightclub in the area.

A brawl took place after Etuhu and two other men were denied entrance to the venue, with police called to the scene.

The Nigerian released a statement via his club’s website explaining how it happened.

He said: “I want to confirm that I am the AIK player that was involved in the incident that has been reported in the media during the last two days.

“I’m coming forward because I don’t want any more speculation surrounding my team-mates about who was involved and I have always stood up for my actions.

“I have talked to my club and the police about what in my opinion happened on Sunday night, and I will today file a report to the police about what I believe caused the incident and the way the security staff acted.

“I have no further comments since it is now an ongoing police investigation.”

AIK’s director of football Björn Wesström added: “It’s never good news when anyone in our club is involved in this kind of matter.

“I have been in contact with the player and had a good conversation with him in which he calmly gave his version of the story.”

Nigeria midfielder Dickson Etuhu has returned to training after he was sidelined for eight months by a knee injury.

Etuhu returned to training during the week for Blackburn Rovers and Rovers manager Gary Bowyer was delighted to have the hard working midfielder back.

“Dickson has been back in training this week, so we are delighted with that. So, we are happy enough with it, it adds competition to the squad,” Bowyer told the club’s official website.

Etuhu joined Blackburn Rovers from Fulham in the summer of 2012 for a fee of 1.9 million euros.

He last played for Blackburn December 2012 against Middlesbrough.

Dickson Etuhu played his first game after 11 months for Blackburn Rovers on Saturday in a 3-0 loss at Brighton and Hove Albion.

His last game for Rovers was on December 26, 2012, in a 1-0 loss away at Middlesbrough.

Nigeria international Etuhu was a 31st minute substitute when he came in for Williamson and was cautioned in the 42nd minute.

Etuhu was unlucky as he brought down Conway in the 33rd minute for the penalty which resulted into the opening goal.

He almost registered his name on the scorers sheet as his header in the concluding minute of the game rolled over the bar.

The combative defensive midfielder has been troubled by a leg injury.

Blackburn coach keeps faith in Etuhu

Blackburn Rovers coach Gary Bowyer has stated that he is keeping faith in out of favour Super Eagles midfielder Dickson Etuhu who is likely to return to top action this weekend with his Championship side against Middlesbrough.

Etuhu, who has not featured for Rovers for almost a year because of a knee injury, has received criticism from fans for much of last season after struggling to find his best form but Bowyer believes that the combative Nigerian midfielder still has plenty to offer the club.

“I don’t think it is fair for me to comment on how things went when I wasn’t the manager. I am looking at the here and now and he is looking strong. He is a fantastic player that has played in the Premier League. He can give us that strength and drive in the middle of the midfield and it will be a big boost to have him back,” Bowyer told Lancashire Telegraph.

Etuhu played 60 minutes of Rovers’ 3-2 win over Rochdale in the Lancashire Senior Cup on Tuesday afternoon.

Bowyer added: “It is a pleasing thing for everybody that he returned. He looked good and he looked strong. It is a case of how he responds. He is certainly in the frame for Saturday.

The weekend clash with struggling Middlesbrough starts a run of three home games in four during November and Bowyer is keen to take advantage of playing in front of a home crowd.

  • Etuhu hoping to shock Man City

Barnsley striker Kelvin Etuhu is hoping to get one over on his former club Manchester City in the FA Cup today

Etuhu began his career with City and played for them in the FA Youth Cup final in 2005/06, where they lost 3-2 to Liverpool on aggregate.

He now looks set to face them at the Etihad this evening as the Tykes bid to reach the semi-finals for the first time since 2008, where they were beaten to a place in the final with a 1-0 defeat by Cardiff.

A good cup run for Barnsley is a welcome tonic as their form in the league has left them in the bottom three and one point from safety.

But for Etuhu, the game against Roberto Mancini’s side is much more personal after he left the club two years ago following loan spells at Rochdale, Leicester and Cardiff.

“Yes, it’s a big game for me, it’s my old club and every football player wants to impress when they go back to their old club,” Etuhu said.

“But it’s a big occasion for every player in the squad and the coaching staff. We want to get into the next round, that’s the main thing. I’ve got a few mates who are still there, Joleon Lescott, Joe Hart, my best friend Micah Richards, he’s a very close friend of mine. We speak to each other most days, so it will be good to see them again.

“It’s a shame Micah won’t be playing because he’s out due to an injury, but I’ll be looking out for those three to say hello to. It would be nice to turn them over and get a result and I’m looking forward to the game.”

The difference between the spending power of the two clubs is vast, but Etuhu believes Barnsley’s spirit could help them to get an edge over the Premier League side.

He said: “The first thing you must talk about is the budget. They have a huge budget and world-class players as you know.

“But we’ve got something in our team that not a lot of others have, we’ve got a huge team spirit.

“Everybody’s together. Everyone wants to do well and wants everyone else to do well and that’s a huge trait that you need in your team,” enthused the younger brother of Super Eagles ace, Dickson Etuhu.
