  • Decision on Palace’s Europa League fate delayed

Decision on Palace’s Europa League fate delayed

A decision on whether Crystal Palace can compete in next season’s Europa League has been delayed by Uefa.

The Eagles’ place, earned by winning the FA Cup last season, has been under threat because of Uefa’s multi-club ownership rules, which prevents teams under the same ownership from competing in the same European competition.

Co-owner John Textor, who also co-owns French club Lyon, has agreed to sell his 44% stake in Palace in a bid to help their case.

A decision on Palace’s participation had been expected on Monday.

However, Lyon were demoted to Ligue 2 last week by the French football authorities on account of their poor finances.

The club are appealing against the decision but should they fail, they have agreed to relinquish their Europa League spot.

Uefa has therefore opted to wait until the outcome of the appeal before making a decision on Palace’s participation.

It is not known how long Lyon’s appeal will take, with Uefa stating further details will be announced in “due course”.

Should Palace be granted a spot in the competition, they will enter the group phase – which begins in September.

Textor is in the process of selling his stake in Palace to New York Jets owner Woody Johnson.

The American, 59, resigned from his leadership role at Lyon on Monday after deciding to step back from the day-to-day running of the club, in which he owns a 77% stake.

Last October, Textor’s Eagle Football Group announced debts of £422m at Lyon.

The club said the decision to demote them into Ligue 2 was “incomprehensible” and that they would appeal the decision.

Forest ask for clarity over Palace’s Europa League place

Nottingham Forest have asked UEFA for clarity after expressing their concerns over Crystal Palace’s Europa League place.

The Eagles won the FA Cup to qualify for Europe for the first time in their history, but UEFA must decide if they have breached its multi-club ownership rules.

Uefa’s final ruling will centre on American businessman John Textor, owner of Eagle Football – which holds a 43% stake in Palace.

Eagle Football also owns a 77% stake in French side Lyon, who – like Palace – have qualified for next season’s Europa League.

Uefa’s rules state “no individual or legal entity” can hold a majority of shareholder voting rights at two clubs in the same European tournament.

Forest finished seventh in the Premier League, earning a Europa Conference League play-off spot, but stand to gain if Palace are unable to compete in Europe and could be lifted to the Europa League.

Sources have told BBC Sport they have issued their reservations to Uefa.

Uefa’s regulations are in place to prevent collusion between clubs. Palace’s argument is their historic FA Cup win – beating Manchester City 1-0 last month – and European qualification was an achievement accomplished entirely on their own merit.

The club have insisted they are an entity which operates entirely independently, not within the structures of a multi-club model.

Palace also say there has been no employee, backroom staff or coach sharing with Lyon, no dialogue, no collaborative strategy, no combined partnerships, sponsorships or commercial deals and no collective scouting, analysis or software collaborations.

Forest have avoided this issue after owner Evangelos Marinakis diluted his control of the club.

The Greek businessman also controls Olympiakos, as well as Portuguese side Rio Ave and, at the time, Forest and Olympiakos were both on course to qualify for next season’s Champions League.

Forest complied with the rules after Uefa changed the date to 1 March for clubs to highlight potential issues in ownership structures as it was becoming unmanageable to go through the checks required from the previous deadline of 1 June.

The first and second qualification rounds of the Europa League and Conference League are in July.

At that point Palace had not acted despite qualification through the FA Cup being a possibility.

BBC Sport contacted Uefa and Palace who declined to comment.

Why Crystal Palace may miss Europa League despite qualification

English Premier League club Crystal Palace qualified for the Europa League after beating Manchester City in the FA Cup final but the historic achievement is under threat due to UEFA’s multi-club ownership regulations.

UEFA prohibits individuals from holding influence over multiple clubs participating in its competitions simultaneously. This rule aims to maintain the integrity of European tournaments by preventing conflicts of interest.

Two major shareholders of Crystal Palace are at the centeyr of this issue:

John Textor: Holds a 45% stake in Crystal Palace and is the majority owner of Olympique Lyonnais, a French club that also qualified for the Europa League.

David Blitzer: Owns an 18% share in Crystal Palace and has significant holdings in Brøndby IF, a Danish club set to compete in the Europa Conference League.

The simultaneous qualification of these clubs for European competitions has triggered UEFA’s scrutiny.

In an attempt to comply with UEFA regulations, Textor and Blitzer proposed transferring their shares in Crystal Palace to a blind trust, a strategy previously accepted by UEFA in similar situations.

If UEFA enforces its rules strictly and Palace’s owners are unable to find a solution, Crystal Palace could be barred from participating in the Europa League. In such a scenario, Nottingham Forest, who finished higher in the Premier League, might take their place, with Brighton potentially moving into the Conference League .

John Textor has indicated plans to sell his stake in Crystal Palace to resolve the conflict. However, completing such a transaction before the Europa League draw on June 17, 2025, remains uncertain.

Athletic Bilbao’s San Mames Stadium will host the final in May and the Spanish side will play Serie A side AS Roma.

Jose Mourinho’s Fenerbahce, who squeezed through to the playoffs in last place, knocked out Anderlecht with a 5-2 aggregate win after the second leg was briefly paused due to crowd trouble, and they will face Scottish side Rangers.

  • Champions League: UEFA slashes ticket price for away fans

Tickets for away fans in this year’s Champions League will not exceed 70 euros or N28, 000, UEFA announced Friday.

In the same vein the ticket price for away fans in the Europa league will not exceed 45 euros or N18, 000.

The slash is not unconnected with recent outcry by fans over the rising cost of tickets for the two championships which ultimately leaves fans financially drained in the course of supporting and following their teams.

Both Manchester United and Liverpool were angered by Barcelona charging 119 euros (about N48, 000) for away tickets in the Champions League last season.

“Fans are the lifeblood of the game and those who follow their teams to away matches must have access to tickets at a reasonable price, bearing in mind the cost they have already had to incur for their trip,”UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin said Friday, adding

Trabzonspor’s Mikel Obi trains as club gets Getafe tie in Europa

“By capping ticket prices, we want to make sure that away fans can still travel to games and play their part in making the atmosphere inside football stadiums so special,”

The new price cap comes into effect immediately. UEFA said the new maximum prices were equivalent to the lowest category ticket price for the Champions League and Europa League finals respectively.

“This represents progress, and we commend UEFA for their forward thinking,” Football Supporters Europe Executive Director Ronan Evain said in a statement.

“The cap will eliminate the cases of overpricing, but it is, in our opinion, still too high.

“Thankfully, the impact of the new regulation will be reviewed at the end of the season, and as such, we will focus our efforts on lobbying the relevant parties to lower it.”

  • Arsenal to pocket N42billion in Europa final triumph

Soccer fans across the globe especially those with soft spot for Arsenal and Chelsea will have their eyes and attention focused on Baku, the Azerbaijan capital as both London teams fight to the finish tonight in the Europa league final.

While the Blues who already have Champions league ticket by virtue of finishing third in the premier league, they  are equally  hoping  to end the season with a trophy in the kitty, Arsenal on the other hand aim to earn a Champions league slot plus a whooping £90MILLION (About N42billion) should they subdue their arch rivals.

Though victory over Chelsea in Baku would come with the prestige of a trophy, the incentive of an automatic place in the 2019-20 Champions League is just as strong

Arsenal stand to pocket around £43.4m in prize money if they defeat their London rivals and that would rise to £47.5m if they beat either Liverpool or Tottenham in the UEFA Super Cup in Istanbul on August 14.

But simply appearing in the group stage of next season’s Champions League would see Arsenal almost double their money, with over £20m television money, a hefty coefficient payment and a ‘starting fee’ of £13.4m just for participating.

If Arsenal were to replicate their Europa League group stage record of five wins and one draw from this season in next season’s Champions League, they would add another £21m.

The distribution of UEFA prize money is a based on a complex formula that takes into account performance, coefficients and television revenue.

    Arsenal’s Europa League prize money

    1. I) STARTING FEE – £2.57M
    2. II) FIXED AMOUNTS – £15.87M

    III) COEFFICIENT RANKING – £2.95M

    1. IV) MARKET POOL – £22M

    TOTAL = £43.39M*

*Rising to £47.35m if Arsenal also win the Super Cup in August

  • Europa League: Iwobi could set record with Arsenal

Alex Iwobi has been named in Arsenal’s provisional squad for tonight’s Europa League semifinal clash against Valencia at the Estadio de Mestalla, the only player of Nigerian descent in the travelling party to Spain.

Goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo, defenders Tolaji Bola, Joseph Olowu, Tobi Omole, and wingers Xavier Amaechi and Bukayo Saka, who have been registered for the knockout rounds of the Europa League, have not been selected by Coach Unai Emery.

Arsenal beat the Spaniards 3-1 in the first leg thanks to a brace from Alex Lacazette and a crucial late strike from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, with Iwobi watching proceedings from the bench. Since the competition was rebranded the Europa League, starting from the 2009-2010 campaign, only one Nigerian player, Dickson Etuhu, has managed to feature in the showpiece, back in May 2010 when he went the distance as Fulham were beaten by Atlético Madrid. Former Sporting Braga defender Elderson Echiejile is the second Nigerian player to make the matchday squad for a Europa League final but he was an unused substitute in his team’s narrow loss to Porto in 2011.

In the 2013 showpiece at the Amsterdam Arena, Amsterdam, John Obi Mikel and Victor Moses were on the bench though Chelsea won the cup after beating Benfica.

Should Arsenal beat Valencia tonight and go on to win the competition, Iwobi could become the first Nigerian player to play for a winning team, a feat that was not achieved by Mikel and Moses.

  • Late Alonso header gives Chelsea win in Prague

Chelsea struck late with a header by defender Marcos Alonso to beat a stubborn Slavia Prague side 1-0 in their Europa League quarter-final, first leg on Thursday.

Spaniard Alonso broke the deadlock for the west London side in the 86th minute when he sneaked behind two defenders to connect with Willian’s cross.

Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri made seven changes to his lineup from the team that beat West Ham United 2-0 in the Premier League on Monday.

Belgian talisman Eden Hazard had to come off the bench for the last half an hour.

Alonso’s goal gave the Blues a vital away goal as they put behind them bitter memories of the stadium where they lost the 2013 Super Cup to Bayern Munich in a penalty shootout. (Reuters/NAN)
